North Division helps out families this holiday season North Division High School donated holiday food baskets to families in the neighborhood. This community outreach project was coordinated by North Division Newsletter Club, North Division Alumni, St. Matthew Church, North Division Parent Center, Milwaukee Public School Director Annie Woodward, Dr. Bobbie Lathan and the Milwaukee Times Newspaper.

During past four weeks, canned goods and turkeys were collected to distributed to needy families.

North Division High School has presently over 500 students.

Sponsors help Salvation Army feed thousands on Christmas Day with annual Christmas Family Feast On Friday, December 13, 2013 the Salvation Army announced that it will host the annual Christmas Family Feast at the Wisconsin Center District, 400 W. Wisconsin Avenue from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Christmas Day. The announcement was held in the Wisconsin Center District Foyer.

The Christmas Family Feast has been a tradition in Milwaukee for the past 24 years, is (and has always been) free and open to the entire community.

“What started as a dinner to feed those in need has evolved into an important holiday event where a great meal serves as the focal point for a wonderful day of fellowship, fun and community,” said Major Dan Jennings, Salvation Army Divisional Commander for Wisconsin & Upper Michigan.

sible without the generous support of this year’s sponsors.

The Christmas Family Feast is the largest holiday meal program hosted by The Salvation Army in the country,”said Major Jennings.

At the announcement event the sponsors presented a check to Major Jennings for their support of the feast, the Salvation Army also announced that it is still looking for volunteers to help out at the event.

United Way of Greater Milwaukee raises $52.8 million United Way of Greater Milwaukee announced that it raised $52,826,484 in its 2013 community campaign, exceeding its $52.5 million projected goal. United Way officials say they raised $1.2 million more than the $51,671,080 raised in 2012, for a 2.4 percent increase.

The community’s generous support will allow United Way of Greater Milwaukee to impact 1 in 4 people throughout Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties each year by strategically funding 160+ programs in education, income and health at more than 80 agency program partners.

Older adult volunteers are needed for a program that helps the homebound remain in their own homes.

The Senior Companion Program of the Social Development Commission (SDC) is looking for senior volunteers to become part of the effort which helps homebound residents of Milwaukee County.

To be a Senior Companion, you must be at least 55 years old, unemployed or retired, and interested in helping people. Companions make regular visits to elderly resi-

Being Frank

The season of giving is here. The goodwill and charity that will be shared in the next few weeks is unrivaled by any other time of the year. Many people are out shopping online and in stores to buy that special gift for someone. Physical gifts are great but spiritual ones are even better and cost a lot less.

One gift that everyone should wish for is harmony.

Harmony is one thing that seems to be lacking in the world today. When we look at society there is not a lot of harmony amongst people.

People of different races and backgrounds rarely exhibit any harmony. Sure they can be in the same places and even live in the same neighborhoods but existing together isn’t true harmony.

One reason there is a lack of social harmony is because many don’t have personal harmony. The harmony of spirit is lacking in many peo-

ple today. How many of you have constant mental battles inside your heads?

How many of you are fed up with your physical and mental self ? This type of behavior stems from a lack of spiritual harmony.

When one is at harmony with oneself they can exist in harmony with others.

How can a person who is discontent with themselves be content with others? Sadly, personal harmony is a gift that can’t be given, it has to be created by each individual person. One factor towards achieving harmony is love.

Love is one thing that everyone says they give to others. There are different kinds of love but the type that should be everyone’s gift is unconditional love. Unconditional love is just that, love with no strings attached.

This form of love means you accept people for who they are and not what you want them to be. This is the form

Once this love for self is established harmony begins to exist in you.

The last wish gift for society is acceptance. Many people refuse to accept things as they are. People refuse to believe that society hasn’t changed much since the 1600’s. So many tears: The year in Black pain

There are certain years, concretized within our collective memory, noted for the multiplicity of tragedies encountered over the duration of its days. These are years where the proliferation of pain experienced rises above individual and local concerns and becomes forever infused within our communal narrative. For African Americans, 2013 possesses all the painful markings of such a year.

This year commenced with the 150th commemoration of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and gave witness to painful half-century remembrances: the assassination of Medgar Evers, the assassination of

President John F. Kennedy, and the bombing deaths of Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair in Birmingham, Alabama.

However, this year has also wrought new pains with striking frequency, pains that proved multifacted, ranging in scope from persecutory public policies to the reclamation of 19th-century racial caricatures, from cinematic revisitations of historic Black suffering to scenes of real bloodshed in the streets.

In 2013, the inconceivable has become commonplace. Both Jonathan Ferrell and Renisha McBride were killed while harmlessly seeking aid in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Detroit suburb of Dearborn Heights, respectively. In Dallas, Texas, young Donald Maiden, 8, was shot in the face without cause (as if a cause could ever be justified) by a 46-year-old white man as Maiden played outside with his friends.

All life is sacred and untimely deaths, regardless of the character or crimes of the deceased, are tragic. Yet, a unique sting accompanies the untimely death of children. This year, the death of two Chicago youth -- Hadiya Pendleton, 15, shot and killed in a Chicago park days after performing at President Obama's second presidential inauguration, and Jonylah Watkins, six months old, shot five times as her father

changed her diaper -- ripped our hearts.

Yet great injury has not solely been restricted to young Black female bodies but has been extended to attacks against their existential worth. Beautiful Black girls have faced banishment from educational corridors as multiple coiffure controversies were launched nationwide.

The natural textures and styling of their tresses was deemed detrimental to the educational process, a dubious distinction previously assigned to such offenses as in-school fighting and truancy. It is painful to know that these young girls, and thousands vicariously through them, face such needless vitriol on account of their lovely natural locks. Even laudable efforts aimed at strengthening and rebuilding a sense of existential worth for young girls and women,

especially the work of Black Girls Rock, was met with rebuke.

In 2013, Hollywood has experienced a revival of cinematic creations engaging the Black experience. Several films, namely Fruitvale Station, Lee Daniels' The Butler, and 12 Years a Slave, achieved box office success. These cinematic reflections engendered painful, albeit necessary responses from audiences as the sufferings of our ancestors must always be remembered. However, inexplicably, a painful and wholly unnecessary revival of donning blackface occurred as both celebrities and the general public alike returned frequently to draw from this well of cultural insensitivity.

"Stop and Frisk" continued to give cover to racial profiling and police harassment.

After making a purchase at Barneys New York this year, Trayton Christian was harassed and arrested, his purchase at the high-end store and his pigmentation considered mutually exclusive.

Overseas, billionaire and cultural icon Oprah Winfrey faced gross discrimination, as she was denied the opportunity to purchase a luxury handbag she can afford thousands times over.

Countless others, whose names we will never know, but whose experiences are known all too well, faced discrimination and harassment

while walking in their own neighborhoods.

However, this year, our communal pain reached its zenith as the verdict for George Zimmerman was read in a Florida court. Our pain emerged not simply because of Trayvon Martin's untimely death, nor because of the crucifixion of his character by the media and the courts, nor even because of the declaration of Zimmerman's innocence. Our pain was fully realized in that, for many African Americans, Zimmerman's acquittal was fully anticipated. History has revealed a predictable devaluation of a Black man's life on these shores. Zimmerman's continued alleged criminal antics have only served to pour salt on our open wounds.

As the end of year draws near, our eyes are affixed on the State of Georgia, and our pain is renewed, as justice, yet again, appears fleeting in the death of Kendrick Johnson, a young man unconscionably rolled up in a wrestling mat with blunt force injuries.

In his case, vital evidence, including his own human organs, is missing. And still, no perpetrator has been charged in the crime.

Painful, indeed!

The year in Black pain has featured discrimination and harassment, intimidation and oppression, maiming and murder, and aggressive attacks against the Black psyche and soul.

The things we play The Checkered Game of Life was created in the winter of 1860 by a young man named Milton Bradley; he was 24 at the time. By the next year, in 1861, over 45,000 copies of the game were sold. The game was created with a focus on a person’s life from poverty to wealth. Over the time the original game was updated to reflect the changing of times and culture. At the beginning a total of two to six players could play in a game at a time, however with newer versions of the game a total of eight to ten players can now enjoy the game.

By 1960, a modern version of the game was introduced as “The Game of Life,” with a focus on a person’s travel through their life, from college to retirement, jobs, marriage, and possible children along the way. Now the game is simply known as LIFE. From its humble beginnings to the present, the game continues to be played by individuals, family and friends alike who simply enjoy the game to pass the time away and share some special

moments with those they love and care about. In addition, the game continues to be popular; a card game was created, as well as an express version and even one called WiiWare.

Milton Bradley is credited by many with launching the board game industry in America through his Milton Bradley Company. With a mechanical draftsman and patent agent background, he when on to create several other games, rules, coloring books and inventions. Over the years, the Milton Bradley Company has created numerous well known games including Battleship, Connect Four, Twister, and Yahtzee.

to bring people, community, families and friends together.

It is a way to participate and share something with common beliefs and simple rules that are easy to understand.

Amazing isn’t it, that a game that began nearly 150 years ago, still continues to impact our lives in various ways today and yet it allows us to take the time to play with some simple rules to see life from another perspective. It is a game that continues to capture our imagination with what is possible, to make decisions, to take risks, experience failure and success. The ultimate result of playing the game of LIFE is that each player can finish... they made it.

Through the good, bad and indifference the game comes to an end and it perhaps makes you wonder about your own life…in a way… and then you realize that I am playing my LIFE for real.

Yet despite these tears, we can also draw solace from our collective narrative. We have faced many dark days before.

As James Weldon Johnson so eloquently penned, "We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered." Johnson's pen leaves us with this prayerful hope: "God of our weary years, God of our silent tears.

Thou Who has brought us thus far on the way. Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light. Keep us forever in the path we pray."

May the pain of 2013 fuel our just pursuits in the year to come, and may God lead us into justice's light. And may God speed up the day when every tear shall be wiped from our eyes!

Youth Voices Dedication to Nelson Mandela: A legacy that lives for eternity

God used me, or should I say, God worked through me in human form, to show the power of His forgiveness and love!

When you truly thought that the sins you committed were too insurmountable for our great God to forgive, all you have to do is smile and look at the example of my life!

And you will truly understand that God forgives!

Although my life in physical form has ended, don’t mourn for me, but rejoice!

Rejoice in the fact that I beat the odds, I went to prison in my 40s, served 27 years, came out in my 70s, and the Lord used His magnificent power, to use me to do His life work!

I went from political prisoner to South African President!

The Lord blessed me to see 95 years of life!

New generations touched by the spiritual journey, God led me to do!

But now, the savior has called me home; but remember, if you live for peace, love, forgiveness and acceptance, my legacy and memory will never vanish!

It will be eternal like the great father I believe in, and always live on!

On Sunday, December 15, 2013, Greater New Birth Church, 8237 W. Silver Spring Dr., held its third annual Celebration of Life candlelight service. The purpose of the service was to invite the community at-large to join with local funeral home operators and the New Birth congregation in honoring the lives of loved ones who have passed on from this life. Twinkling lights, a bounty of decorations and who could forget about presents.

With Christmas just around the corner, the final preparations for this massive holiday are being made.

But, Christmas isn’t what it used to be anymore. It used to be a time to get together with family and friends and to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Even those that are not affiliated with religious beliefs still take part in this holiday, for it has become a winter tradition.

This tradition doesn’t wait until Dec. 1 to arrive. Businesses across the country have jumped on the bandwagon as well, as early as six months in advance. The meaning of Christmas is being morphed from past religious beliefs into a season of commercialization.

was placing Christmas ornaments on the shelf. Halloween was nowhere near close to happening; yet, in the middle of the summer, Christmas was already starting to leave its mark.

Now, fast forward to November.

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time to give thanks for the things that we have.

We celebrate by enjoying a nice meal with our family and friends. It is a time for us to soak in each other’s company, but by 6 p.m., those same thankful people were out Black Friday shopping trying to get a head start on their Christmas lists.

Eighteen hours into a day that we are supposed to be celebrating what we are thankful for, we venture out to get more superfluous stuff.

Sure, the deals are great, but it takes away important values from two holidays.

All throughout December, Christmas commercial after commercial are being played on TV. Connecting popular Christmas carols to their business makes it impossible

to forget them. Commercials range from stating that their product is the “must have item” this holiday season or the company just wishing you a Merry Christmas.

I don’t recall ever seeing a commercial wishing me a Happy Thanksgiving or a Happy Halloween.

We can’t escape the pressure of this commercialized Christmas. A holiday, that was once about giving, is becoming more and more about receiving. The latest

toys on the market target young ones. These, most often pricey, items find their way onto the Christmas lists of many children.

Wanting to make their Christmas special, we give in and purchase an item that eventually winds up at the bottom of the toy box. Even though this can be argued as the gift of giving, it takes away the true meaning of that phrase.

Walk by any store and you will most likely be greeted by someone bundled up and ringing a bell. These people are the true meaning of the gift of giving. They are giving their time to help raise donations to help those who are less fortunate than many.

Many times we simply walk by, shopping list in hand, without a second thought.

With all the hustle and bustle, we are quick to forget the true meaning of Christmas.

It doesn’t come from any store, but from savoring the holiday with your family and friends. This lesson can be shown in the popular book and movie, "How the Grinch

Stole Christmas." Even after the Grinch stole Christmas from Whoville, the Whos were not distressed but continued to come together and celebrate the true meaning.

Simplicity is what Christmas is all about. Not the bright lights, the decorations or even the presents. Often, we get sucked into the hypnotic jingles encouraging us to go out and buy, buy, buy.

Buying Christmas gifts for others isn’t a problem. This practice has been a longstanding tradition dating back to when the three wise men brought gifts to Jesus.

What is a problem is how that Christmas has turned into a time where it is all about receiving gifts.

This holiday season try not to be a victim to this “new” type of Christmas. Remember that it is a time to spend with your loved ones and to celebrate the end of the year.

It is the memories made that will stick with us, not the shiny, fancy toys.

And those memories are truly the best gift of all.

St. Gabriel COGIC, 5375 N. 37th St., hosted Pastors United’s “Time to Pray” worship service on Saturday, December 14, 2013. Participating pastors and ministers offered prayers for Pastors United committees: Health and Wellness, Crime and Incarceration, Family Structure, Education and Civic Engagement. Pastor Mose Fuller of St. Timothy Baptist Church, during his prayer, chided the devil regarding the inclement weather saying: “The devil thought he had a victory today, but we fooled him, because we didn’t stay home today.” Pastor Fuller is chairman of the Health and Wellness Committee. He noted in his remarks that prayer was needed because of mission and work which lie ahead for Pastors United. And to do that work, “we must be about the whole person,” Pastor Fuller said.

Referencing John 3:2, Pastor Fuller said: “We need to be about the whole person and the blood of Christ to cleanse us. We can only do our job well when we are healthy,” he decried. That can only be done when we allow the blood of Christ to “strengthen and cleanse us.” For that to occur, we must be cognizant of what we put in our bodies. “We are dying because we just don’t eat right,” Pastor Fuller said, adding “most diseases that take us out have to do with our eating habits.” He went on to suggest that if we are to minister as God would have us to minister, we need to be healthy. It is far easier to do well when we are healthy than when we are sick. The Prayer Service concluded with all male pastors and ministers gathered in a circle to pray for Pastor Gregory Lewis who is president of Pastors United.

Get healthy with probiotics (part 2) Probiotics…for life!

Probiotics are beneficial microbes that live in our intestines. Coming from the Greek, meaning "for life", the term probiotic was likely coined as a witty response to the word antibiotic.

The therapeutic use of probiotics began when the benefits of "probiotic therapy" after a course of antibiotic therapy was recognized.

Many people mistakenly believe this is the only use of probiotic supplements. Probiotics have many functions in our bodies.

"What is leaky gut?"

"Leaky gut" or "leaky gut syndrome" is an even more serious problem that can develop as a result of dysbiosis.

Leaky gut indicates abnormal or increased permeability of the intestinal lining. A healthy intestinal lining allows only the nutrients from properly digested fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to pass through for transport to the cells.

Simultaneously, the lining acts as a barrier to keep out larger particles, including disease causing bacteria, toxic molecules, undigested food particles, and other foreign substances.

When initated or inflamed, the lining becomes damaged.

The result is increased permeability. This allows harmful substances to pass di-

rectly through the weakened cell membranes. With time, this becomes leaky gut syndrome, a condition causing a large number of symptoms and illnesses. As knowledge about the connection between digestive function and the immune system deepens, the list of health conditions associated with leaky gut grows.

Common conditions associated with leaky gut: • Acne and other skin problems • Aging • Breast enlargement in men • Candida infections • Childhood hyperactivity • Chronic anemia • Chronic bad breath • Chronic bladder infections • Chronic diarrhea • Chronic vaginal infection • Constipation • Crohn's Disease • Food allergies • High cholesterol levels • Hormonal problems • Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Liver dysfunction • Menstrual complaints • Osteoporosis • PMS • Prostate trouble • Severe bruising • Vitamin B deficiency Maintaing digestive health High quality probiotic supplements can bring the bowels back into balance and

keep them there. This can offset the disturbing effects that dietary, environmental, and emotional stresses can create in the digestive tract.

The two most common types of probiotic supplements are Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium (as B. bifidum and B. longum). Both kinds can be found throughout the digestive tract, and both produce acid substances such as lactic acid. The acids produced by the probiotics help maintain the correct intestinal pH and inhibit the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. The key to the effectiveness of probiotics as intestinal monitors is their amazing capacity to secrete numerous substances that kill pathogenic bacteria.

Acidophilus, with its many strains, is the most widely known probiotic. Scientific research has demonstrated that this probiotic plays an especially beneficial role in the digestive process, pro-

ducing enzymes that ensure the availability of nutrients.

Its production of lactic acid enhances the utilization of essential minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, etc.) and suppresses detrimental bacteria such as Salmonella (food poisoning), Shigella (diarrhea), and E. coli (intestinal disease and kidney failure). Acidophilus has also been reported to produce sufficient hydrogen peroxide to inhibit the growth of candida. In addition, acidophilus reportedly alleviates lactose intolerance, inhibits carcinogenic activity in the bowels, and improves the amount of nutrition we receive from our food.

On the other hand, the lesser known bifidobacteria are the predominant organisms. Many people who do not respond to acidophilus react positively to bitidus.

This bacteria first implants in infancy and is found in humans throughout life.

Bitidus shares many of the benefits of acidophilus, including the production of lactic acid. However, bifidobacteria also produce shortchain fatty acids (SCFAs).

These important acids have a wide range of antimicrobial activity against yeasts and molds as well as against unhealthy bacteria. Additionally, SCFAs increase blood flow in the colon, stimulate

pancreatic enzyme secretion, promote sodium and water absorption, and support the growth of intestinal mucosal cells. Studies have shown that colonic absorption of SCFAs may supply up to 10 percent of our daily energy requirement.

Bifidus delivers even further benefits. One unique job is inhibiting the growth of bacteria that can alter nitrates in the intestine into potentially carcinogenic nitrites . It also provides a healthy environment for the synthesis of some B vitamins and vitamin K. Bitidus microorganisms destroy the pathogens that cause vaginal yeast infections.

In addition, bifidus is known to improve bowel function by aiding movement (peristalsis) and producing a softer, smoother stool. Further, bifidus has proven useful in treatment of cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis.

Since bifidus competes with pathogenic bacteria and yeasts for both nutrients and attachment sites, it is especially important to support your intestines with supplementation.

Study links walking to lower breast cancer risk

Researchers from the American Cancer Society have found that walking at least 7 hours per week is associated with a 14 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. This finding is consistent with many other studies that show regular exercise can help women lower their risk of breast cancer. New information in this study found the exercise helped women whether or not they were overweight, and helped them even if they gained weight during the study.

The researchers looked at breast cancer status and exercise levels in 73,615 postmenopausal women taking part in the CPS-II Nutritional Cohort, a study begun by the American Cancer Society in 1992. During the 17-year study, 4,760 of the women were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Among the women who reported walking as their only activity, those who walked at least 7 hours per week had a 14 percent lower risk of breast cancer com-

pared to those who walked 3 or fewer hours per week. The women walked at a “moderate” pace – about 3 miles per hour. The most active women – those who walked and did more vigorous exercise – had a 25 percent lower risk of breast cancer compared to the least active.

“Our results clearly support an association between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer, with more vigorous activity having a stronger effect,” said Alpa Patel, PhD, leader of the study and American Cancer Society strategic director of Cancer Prevention Study-3. “Our findings are particularly relevant, as

people struggle with conflicting information about how much activity they need to stay healthy. Without any other recreational physical activities, walking on average of at least one hour per day was associated with a modestly lower risk of breast cancer. More strenuous and longer activities lowered the risk even more.”

Women in the study benefited from physical activity whether they were at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese, and even if they gained weight during the study. They also benefited whether or not they were taking menopausal hormone therapy. Exercise reduced the

risk of both estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative cancers. (In estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, the female hormone estrogen promotes the growth of the cancer.

Hormone therapy for breast cancer works by blocking the effects of estrogen or lowering estrogen levels. Estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer is often harder to treat because it is not likely to respond to hormone therapy.)

The American Cancer Society recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, preferably spread throughout the week. Moderate-intensity activities are those at the level of a brisk walk. Vigorousintensity activities increase your heart rate and breathing, and make you sweat.

Examples include running, aerobic dance, and soccer.

How exercising lowers breast cancer risk is not fully understood. It’s thought that physical activity regulates hormones including estrogen and insulin, which can fuel breast cancer growth.
