Noted education reformer and civil rights Miller Lite “Free Rides” offered activist Lauri J. Wynn passes away at the again this New Year’s Eve age of 83 Determined, driven and dedicated to her community are just some of the traits used to describe Lauri J. Wynn, who has engaged in a lifelong passion to nurture and empower youth, adults and communities across the nation. She is widely known for her work in education, public, political and human arenas as an organizer, leader, worker, consultant and volunteer. In other words, Wynn was someone who got the job done! Born in Harlem, NY in 1930, Wynn attended Virginia Union University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in history. She also attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later earned a master's degree in education at National Louis University School of Education in Evanston, IL. She also completed advanced studies at Chicago State University, School of Education. Wynn was married to Thomas H. Wynn. Sr. (deceased 2004). and ultimately raised five children as a single mother. While her professional career was varied and enviable, her focus has primarily been singular–education, whether in the public school or the political arena. Perhaps Wynn was most noted for her prominent involvement in Milwaukee's desegregation movement during the 1960s-

a plight she got involved with upon her first day of arriving in Milwaukee. After meeting with Attorney Lloyd Barbee–best known as the architect of the Milwaukee school desegregation movement,Wynn understood that the major hurdle to Barbee's public school de facto desegregation lawsuit was funding. To that end, Wynn single-handedly developed a financial lobbying strategy to encourage the Teacher Union's decision makers to take an affirmative, active stance to help defeat school segregation. Using her own funds, she traveled to Washington, DC to present before the National Education Association (NEA) a testimony so compelling that within 10 days of her presentation to get funding to computerize evidence, she received a $10,000 grant. This monumental move served as the catalyst to facilitate the Midwest school desegregation movement,

which included Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan. A career teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools, Wynn also used her political shrewdness from 1982-1986 to work in the Governor's Office as a Policy Advisor on Black Affairs (1982·1986). She also served as President of the 45,000-member Wisconsin Education Association Council, from 19731976. Throughout her career, Wynn earned numerous accolades and awards, including the NAACP Distinguished Service Award (1994). Wynn has served tirelessly on community and professional boards, such as the Black Political Network (1983-84); co-coordinator of the United Negro College Fund Walk/ Run (1985); Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (lifetime member); Governor's Council on Minority Business; Future Milwaukee (class of 1985); Martin Luther King Community School (Board President 1972-74); National Education Association Black Caucus (founder, 1970 chairperson, 1971); National Education Association (Executive Committee 1975-80); Wisconsin Education Association Council (Legislative Lobbyist, 1974-75, Wisconsin Black Political Convention, President. 1985); and a Black Excellence honoree (19

Miller Lite is teaming up with Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), Waukesha Metro Transit and Beer Capitol Distributing to bring Miller Lite Free Rides to Milwaukee and Waukesha this New Year’s Eve. Since its inception in 1987, Miller Lite Free Rides has provided over 480,000 people with safe and free alternative transportation in Milwaukee and Waukesha, and more than 3.7 million people nationwide. The program enjoys full support of state and local law enforcement, including the Milwaukee County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). This New Year’s Eve, Miller Lite will also provide free rides in Green Bay, Madison, the Twin Cities, and Chicago.

A little reminder about life insurance.

Hupy and Abraham teams with “SafeRide” to take drunk drivers off the road

Personal injury law firm is only sponsor of nation’s largest designated driver program The Wisconsin-based law firm of Hupy and Abraham has joined the Tavern League of Wisconsin as the only sponsor of their “SafeRide Program” to reduce drunk driving and prevent the injuries incurred with it. The Tavern League of Wisconsin’s “SafeRide Program” is the largest of its kind in the entire nation and has helped reduce alcohol-related crashes by 33 percent since 2007. The way the program works is simple. If someone is at a Tavern League of Wisconsin-affiliated bar and feels too impaired to drive, they can simply ask the bartender for a “SafeRide American Taxi Charge Voucher.” Then, instead of driving home drunk, the person will present the voucher to a taxi driver and receive a free ride home. In the past year alone, Tavern League member es-

cases including car accidents, motorcycle accidents, wrongful death and pharmaceutical and medical device class actions. The firm’s seventeen experienced attorneys are committed to going above and beyond the call of duty for their clients by tirelessly representing them to the best of their ability while being involved in the local community—from raising funds for local charities to participating in safety and accident prevention initiatives. In the past three years, the firm has donated more than $500,000 to more than 100 worthwhile causes. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has received top ratings from a number of national and local professional organizations for many years and was voted Best Personal Injury Lawyers by the readers of the Shepherd Express in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and named Best Personal Injury Law Firm by voters in the WISN A-List poll in 2012. The evening affair featured an eight course buffet dinner, a fur fashion show by A.J. Ugent, and a uplifting gospel message by Pastor Richard Shaw of St. Matthew CME Church. The Reids acknowledged the business support they have received from the religious community. The Reids have two funeral home locations, one on Milwaukee's northwest side and a location in Racine.

UWM students use their degrees with commitment and caring Many UWM graduates return to their communities not only with career skills, but with a passion for helping others. Two students who graduated in December are excellent examples of this type of commitment and caring. Marande Buck, who earned her master’s degree in social work and a certificate from the Child Welfare Training Program, will continue working to help children find safe and happy homes. Buck, a foster care licensing specialist, works for Saint AemilianLakeside, a Milwaukee agency that contracts with the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare. Sue Grochowski, who earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing, has been accepted into the College of Nursing’s doctoral program in nursing practice, but she’s already volunteered countless hours in the community for a National Kidney Foundation program. Both students have seen the needs firsthand. Grochowski, who was born and raised in Honduras, moved to New Orleans when she was 15. She completed her undergraduate degree in biology at the Univer-

Marande Buck sity of New Orleans and was working as a research technician when Hurricane Katrina disrupted her life. “It happened so suddenly,” Grochowski says. “I was so involved with my work that I didn’t leave until the night before Katrina hit. I only packed for three days, and I was away for almost three months.” After moving to Milwaukee, she began working as a researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin. But she felt there was still more she wanted to accomplish. “I was missing a piece in my career,” says Grochowski. “I felt nursing was the right fit for me because I would be

able to interact with patients and help out in the community.” She chose to pursue her nursing degree at UWM because of its focus on community health. Buck’s family took in countless foster kids when she was growing up. “I always wanted to go into a helping profession,” says Buck, who considered nursing and education before earning her bachelor’s degree in social welfare from UW-Madison. Both Grochowski and Buck have juggled numerous responsibilities and volunteer work while at UWM. During her years at UWM, Grochowski traveled to Australia with the International Scholar Laureate Program nursing delegation, and during her first clinical semester, her mentor, instructor Marijo Rommelfaenger, introduced her to the National Kidney Foundation’s KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) screenings. “It has made such an impact on my life,” reflects Grochowski. “I became so passionate about what they were doing for at-risk populations. It made me realize that this is what I really want to do.” She remains an active volunteer with the Kidney Foundation,

MPS achievement scores trend up, outpacing U.S. growth rate in math and reading on rigorous national exam Milwaukee Public Schools students scored better this year than two years ago in both grades and both subjects tested on a rigorous national exam, yielding average score growth that outpaced the nation’s public school students and most other participating large urban school districts. Scores from the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress Trial Urban District Assessment (NAEP TUDA), which students took from January to March 2013, show: - In 4th-grade reading: MPS’ growth was the 4th highest among 21 participating districts - In 8th-grade math: MPS’ growth was 5th highest among 21 participating districts - In 8th-grade reading: MPS’ growth was 7th highest among 21 participating districts - In 4th-grade math: MPS’ growth was 7th highest among 21 participating districts MPS’ growth outpaced the rate of growth among U.S.

public school students in all four grade-subject combinations and outpaced the rate of growth among large urban districts in 4th-grade reading, 8th-grade reading and 8th-grade mathematics. The growth in scores comes as MPS has strengthened curriculum and put students on the path to college and career readiness through implementation of its Comprehensive Literacy Plan, beginning in 2010-11, and its Comprehensive Math/ Science Plan, beginning in 2011-12. MPS’ strongest area of growth from 2011 to 2013 was among Hispanic/Latino students, one of the district’s fastest-growing demographics. The growth among Hispanic/Latino students was large enough to represent a major statistical shift in 4th-

grade math, 8th-grade math and 8th-grade reading. Scores for students who are learning English (ELL) also posted significant gains in 4th-grade math and 8th-grade reading. Other gains from 2011 to 2013 were not large enough to represent a major statistical shift. MPS also saw growth over a larger period: scores were up modestly from 2009 to 2013 in both reading and math and in both 4th and 8th grades. The strongest growth from 2009 to 2013 came in 8th-grade mathematics, which was large enough to register as a major statistical shift. “It’s exciting to see scores trending upward across the board,” MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton said. “We expect the significant reforms we have put in place to yield even stronger achievement growth in the future. While overall achievement levels are not where they need to be, the only way to change that is by growing and our reforms are beginning to do just that.” (Continued on pg. 11)

Sue Grochowski performing health screenings for diabetes and serving as a bilingual Spanish interpreter. She also works as a patient care assistant at Froedtert Hospital, and is doing clinicals in the labor and delivery unit at St. Joseph Hospital. Buck spent four years juggling her foster care caseload along with graduate school, a required internship and parenting her young daughter. Her baby was just a few

months old when Buck’s supervisor encouraged her to go back for her master’s degree and social worker certification. With support from her daughter’s father, family and friends, she decided to dive in. Both value their UWM education and look forward to using what they’ve learned to help others. Buck encourages other working adults to go for their academic goals, even if it seems intimidating at first. “If you want to do it, just do it,” she says. “You may be waiting for the perfect time, and the perfect time may never come.” Grochowski’s goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner. “I want to have an impact educating people on primary prevention,” she says. “Education is the key to helping people make good health decisions, and identifying chronic diseases earlier so that the patient isn’t suffering for years.”

Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Get healthy with probiotics (part 3) Probiotics…for life! Probiotics are beneficial microbes that live in our intestines. Coming from the Greek, meaning "for life", the term probiotic was likely coined as a witty response to the word antibiotic. The therapeutic use of probiotics began when the benefits of "probiotic therapy" after a course of antibiotic therapy was recognized. Many people mistakenly believe this is the only use of probiotic supplements. Probiotics have many functions in our bodies. Maintaining digestive health High quality probiotic supplements can bring the bowels back into balance and keep them there. This can offset the disturbing effects that dietary, environmental, and emotional stresses can create in the digestive tract.. The two most common types of probiotic supplements are Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium (as B. bifidum and B .longum). Both

MPS achievement scores trend up (Continued from pg. 10) Among the reforms that MPS has implemented or is now implementing: - MPS’ Comprehensive Literacy and Math/Science plans, previously referenced, which strengthen curriculum and put students on the path to college and career success through the rigorous Common Core State Standards - The creation of 10 MPS GE Foundation Demonstration Schools, which are now modeling Common Core implementation for other schools in the district - MPS’ increased focus on college and career readiness, including the strengthening of graduation requirements, winning a GEAR UP readiness grant worth $30 million and the opening of two

kinds can be found throughout the digestive tract, and both produce acid substances such as lactic acid. The acids produced by the probiotics help maintain the correct intestinal pH and inhibit the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. The key to the effectiveness of probiotics as intestinal monitors is their amazing capacity to secrete numerous substances that kill pathogenic bacteria. Acidophilus, with its many strains, is the most widely known probiotic. Scientific research has demonstrated that this probiotic plays an especially beneficial role in the digestive process, producing enzymes that ensure the availability of nutrients. Its production of lactic acid enhances the utilization of essential minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, etc.) and suppresses detrimental bacteria such as Salmonella (food poisoning), Shigella (diarrhea), and E. coli (intestinal disease and kidney failure). Acidophilus has also been reported to produce TEAM UP College Access Centers with funding from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation - Growing Advanced Placement offerings including launching the College Board’s rigorous pre-AP SpringBoard program into seven MPS schools - Expanding MPS’ already largest-in-the-nation Project Lead the Way participation, bringing the rigorous handson science/technology/ engineering/math (STEM) program to more schools - Expanding college preparatory International Baccalaureate programming into more schools - Strategically using facilities to expand successful schools parents and students seek The district grew its inclusion rate from 2009 to 2011 and 2009 to 2013, with more English-Language Learners (ELL) and students with disabilities taking the test. MPS’ NAEP TUDA results, which measure only a sample of students, largely match MPS’ results on state tests, which all students take.

sufficient hydrogen peroxide to inhibit the growth of candida. In addition, acidophilus reportedly alleviates lactose intolerance, inhibits carcinogenic activity in the bowels, and improves the amount of nutrition we receive from our food. On the other hand, the lesser known bifidobacteria are the predominant organisms. Many people who do not respond to acidophilus react positively to bitidus. This bacteria first implants in infancy and is found in humans throughout life. Bitidus shares many of the benefits of acidophilus, including the production of lactic acid. However, bifido-

bacteria also produce shortchain fatty acids (SCFAs). These important acids have a wide range of antimicrobial activity against yeasts and molds as well as against unhealthy bacteria. Additionally, SCFAs increase blood flow in the colon, stimulate pancreatic enzyme secretion, promote sodium and water absorption, and support the growth of intestinal mucosal cells. Studies have shown that colonic absorption of SCFAs may supply up to 10 percent of our daily energy requirement. Bifidus delivers even further benefits. One unique job is inhibiting the growth of bacteria that can alter nitrates in the intestine into potentially carcinogenic nitrites It also provides a healthy environment for the synthesis of some B vitamins and vitamin K. Bitidus microorganisms destroy the pathogens that cause vaginal yeast infections. In addition, bifidus is known to improve bowel function by aiding movement (peristalsis) and

producing a softer, smoother stool. Further, bifidus has proven useful in the treatment of cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis. Since bifidus competes with pathogenic bacteria and yeasts for both nutrients and attachment sites, it is especially important to support your intestines with supplementation. Besides the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria, other beneficial bacteria include L. bulgaricus, L. casei, L. salivarius, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, B. breve, Enterococcus faecium, Saccharomyces houlardii, and L. sporogene. The latter is a unique strain of lactobacillus which occurs as spores. This means it resists the actions of stomach acid and antibiotics. Sporogenesis non-dairy and is derived from malt. Independent mobile analytics firm RootMetrics awards top spot to AT&T in recent wireless network performance test A newly released report shows AT&T wireless customers in Milwaukee are enjoying the highest ranked local network. An independent mobile research and testing organization today gave AT&T’s overall wireless network top honors. Seattlebased RootMetrics® ranked AT&T highest for combined/overall voice, data and text network performance in Milwaukee. The RootMetrics® wireless network performance study for Milwaukee named AT&T as the overall RootMetrics RootScore® Award winner for its combination of call, text and mobile Internet performance. The RootMetrics award is based on analysis of more than 27,524 wireless test calls, texts and data transmissions conducted during November, 2013. This study is the second consecutive RootMetrics study for Milwaukee in which AT&T ranked highest. “AT&T was ranked highest in our November, 2013 tests of overall network performance in the Milwaukee area. Our overall RootScore Award looks at call, data and text performance across all data network technologies, including 4G LTE. We look at performance from a consumer’s point of view, and

AT&T offered a very strong overall performance for those in Milwaukee during our tests,” said Bill Moore, president and CEO of RootMetrics. AT&T launched 4G LTE in Milwaukee in November, 2012. It plans to expand its 4G LTE network to cover 300 million people nationwide by year-end 2014. Even as 4G LTE expands, customers can get 4G speeds outside of 4G LTE areas with our 4G HSPA+ technology. “Our customers depend on their wireless service to help manage their busy lives,” said Dave Fine, AT&T vice president and general manager for Illinois and Wisconsin. “They want service they can depend on as they travel in and around the Milwaukee area. We are happy to see our network investment is paying off and our customers are getting top-ranked wireless performance. “There are more reasons than ever to choose AT&T. We invested nearly $300 million in our Milwaukee area wireless and wireline networks from 2010 through 2012, and we’ll continue investing in order to give our customers great service.” Milwaukee RootScore® Report December, 2013. Performance rankings of four mobile networks rely on scores calculated from ran-

dom samples. Your experience may vary. The RootMetrics award is not an endorsement of AT&T. Visit www.rootmetrics.com for more details.

Community

While Mary Burke is a gubernatorial candidate, she is not a run-of-the-mill politician. Most politicians spend years, even decades, crafting an image for themselves through political posturing and making the right friends behind the scenes. Dreams of higher office often eclipse good ideas and positive fundamental change. That’s not Mary Burke. While some know her as a former Trek executive and Commerce secretary for Governor Jim Doyle, it’s less known that Burke has spent the last 15 years as a leader in her community who has not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. The Madison-based businesswoman believes that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed and has become a force for influencing change on the minority student achievement gap and poverty in her community. Burke, a longtime supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, began her relationship with the organization as a mentor and tutor for two young boys in 1998

Meet the Mary Burke you may not know

Mary Burke while still an executive at Trek Bicycle. She was quickly tapped to join the Board of Directors and was unanimously elected President by her fellow board members in 2002. Her commitment to the club is unwavering. She resigned from Trek in 2004 to lead the organization's $6.25 million fundraising effort for a state-of-the-art facility in one of Madison’s struggling neighborhoods. In her role as Director, she led the club’s expansion from a bare bones community organization to one that drives

significant change in Dane County. Under her leadership, the organization created a partnership with the Madison School District to build a nationally acclaimed college prep program that includes all four of the city’s high schools. Partnership and accountability are key components of Burke’s philosophy. While others seem content to simply write checks and take advantage of photo opportunities, Burke works to bring everyone to the table to ensure that investments generate the greatest positive

impact. Her approach earned her a reputation of not being overtly political; instead, she’s known as a pragmatic leader who prefers to weigh ideas on their merit instead of their politics. Burke’s approach has been successful. In the past decade the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County has increased the number of children it serves from 300 to 3,000 and swelled its operating budget fourteen times over, growing from $250,000 to $3.5 million. Burke’s focus on partnership and her passion for educational opportunity led to the creation of the AVID/ TOPS student achievement partnership with the Madison school district. The AVID/ TOPS college prep curriculum is aimed at low-income and underrepresented students, many of whom would be the first in their families to graduate from college. The program is entering its fourth year, and high school students enrolled in the program continue to show stronger academic progress than students in similar academic standing and demographics.

No, you haven’t missed any of these headlines of Mary Burke promoting her efforts in a chestbeating fashion— she simply doesn’t welcome the fanfare. A few years back, Burke quietly gave $450,000 to Road Home, a nonprofit agency serving homeless families in Dane County, when they fell short of their fundraising goal to build 15 apartment homes for the homeless. It is rare to see someone who has done so much for their community without also self-promoting their efforts. To peg Mary Burke as just another wealthy politician would be to overlook all of the selfless work she’s done to benefit her community. She’s simply cut from a different cloth, willing to bring people together to craft fresh, bold solutions to our state’s toughest problems. In a time of deeply partisan bickering, she may very well be exactly what Wisconsin needs to get back on track.
