Local business leader Arthur Reid's 78th birthday celebration
On Saturday, May 21, 2016, Mr. Arthur Reid, Jr., the owner and president of Reid's New Golden Gate Funeral Home celebrated his 78th birthday surrounded by family and friends. The elegant and lavish surprise birthday party was held at the Radisson Hotel, 7065 N. Port Washington Rd. It was a fitting event to honor a local business leader who has been such an important part in our community. Pictured at the formal event are Mrs. Mary Smith-Reid (seated, left), and Mr. Arthur Reid, Jr. (seated, right) with their children and grandchildren.

WAAW Center celebrates their 20th Annual "Faces of Hope" luncheon

The 20th Annual Faces of Hope luncheon was held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Wisconsin African American Women Center. 3020 West Vliet Street. Forty-two community leaders were honored for their dedicated service and civic involvement. More than 200 people attired in stylish head crowns attended the annual event. The 2016 honorees were: Marilyn Adams, Helen Boyd, Ruby Brooks Dent, the late Paulette Copeland, Gershia Coggs, Linda Cooper, Valarie Daniels Carter, Dr. Sandra Dickerson, Cordelia Ekweume, Cecelia Gore, Pamela Harrell, Josephine Hicks, Josephine Hill, Margaret Henningsen, Safronia Ivory Dodd-Owens,
Gwen Jackson, Ruby Jackson, Shirley Lanier, Stella Love, Maudie Love, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Marian Jones, Dr. Darcia Merritt, Lena Martin, Johnnie Moon, Dr. Dorothy Travis Moore, Emma Olds, Shelia Payton, June Perry, Chanell Price, Dr. Joan Prince, Shirley Reeves, Darlene Rose, Jackie Ross, Dawn Marie Scott, Thelma Sias, Deloris Sims, Ella Smith, the late JoAnn Swan, the late State Representative Annette Polly Williams, Dr. Edie A. Wilson, Elisterine Clayton, and Shirley Sharp. The event was organized by WAAW president Jo Moutry Hill and vice president Ruby Jackson. The mistresses of ceremonies were State Senator Lena Taylor and Sherry Hill.
MLK School students tour famous sites of the Civil Right movement On Sunday, May 22, 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School's eighth grade students, chaperones and parents gathered for a prayer. Afterward the students and chaperones boarded a bus for a multi-city Civil Rights Tour of the South. The students will be visiting historic sites in cities like Montgomery and Selma. This year's trip will mark the last for Milwaukee Public Schools DDCE project coordinator Tyrone Dumas. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com
