HomegoingCelebration Of

A Special Tribute

We, the children of James T. Erby, extend an especially heartfelt thanks to David Reynolds, whom we affectionately call “Uncle Dave”. Uncle Dave, you not only were a loyal first cousin to our father, but also an advocate, and a brother. Your generous and selfless love for our father is to us an extension of his strength and character. May you be blessed one thousand fold!

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. ~Luke 6:38 KJV

Obituary James Thimpson Erby

was born to the union of Helen and Frank Erby on June 27, 1940 in West Helena, Arkansas. The family migrated to Chicago, Illinois. Like many families in that era, Frank and Helen came to Chicago to access the opportunities that were burgeoning on the Westside where James attended David G. Farragut High School. James, affectionately known as “J.T.”, exhibited many talents and had many passions. According to him, “I did it my way!” He became an entrepreneur at an early age, owning and operating several businesses throughout his lifetime. He was also a carpenter, auto mechanic and a Golden Gloves Boxer. J.T. was an independent thinker. As a young man, he subscribed to the Black Nationalist ideology of the Nation of Islam. He was concerned about the conditions and struggles of Black people and advocated Black empowerment and enrichment. In fact, he was a bodyguard and friend to the late Minister Malcolm X. Later in life, J. T. confessed his faith in Christ. On February, 29, 2016, our beloved J. T. made his transition. Within the past few years, he had taken ill and his health declined. His cousin, David Reynolds, who was a constant caregiver, and trusted friend remained with him through his transition. J. T. will be remembered for his strength and vitality. His strong voice, unyielding temperament, and boisterous laughter were a signature part of his character. James was a force to reckon with, a leader and a loyal friend. James was preceded in death by his father, Frank; mother, Helen; and his sister, Jacquelyn Rogers. Left to celebrate his life are: his seven children James Erby, Jr. (Brenda), Angela Dade (Getzman), Latonya Gist, Kimberly Hopson (Jeffery), Stephanie McLemore, Kandyce McGowan and Derek Brown (Heather); three brothers, Arthur Erby, Yusef Sudah and Michael Williams; grandchildren - Darius, Turquoisha, Faith, Denisha, Getzman Jr., Jacolbi, Danielle, Tomika, Freddie, Jasmynn, Blaire, Stephaughn, Collin, Derekniqua, Dereknesha, Derek Jr., Destiney, Derek Jr., David and Daniel; and a host of other loving relatives including great grandchildren.
