MPS Board honors late Milwaukee Times Founder Nathan Conyers
On Thursday, June 28, 2018, the Milwaukee Public Schools Board of Directors presented recently deceased Milwaukee Times founder and publisher Nathan Conyers (inset) with the Excellence in Education Award at its regular monthly board meeting. Mr. Conyers was commended for his decades of service to the journalism profession and to the community at-large, as well as his support of journalism education. It was his belief in the positive aspects of Milwaukee’s African American community that lead him to help create The Black Excellence Awards, now in its 34th year; and The Louvenia Johnson Scholarship Fund, which has awarded more than $500,000 to Milwaukee area, college-bound, high school seniors since 1988. City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus honored with Jazz/Poetry Brunch On Sunday, June 24, 2018, Interim City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus was honored for her work within the community for ending health disparities with both the Black Health Coalition and with her position as city Health Commissioner with "Flowers While You Live." Dr. McManus was serenaded by jazz saxophonist James Dallas and with poetry by Gat Turner, Melisa Lue, and Ajamou Butler. The event was hosted by Student Minister William Muhammad and held at the African American Women's Center, 3020 W.
