Carolyn Stanford Taylor to be appointed next state superintendent Governor-elect and State Superintendent Tony Evers announced Thursday, December 27, 2018, his intention to appoint current Assistant State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor as the next state superintendent following his oath of office on Monday, January 7, 2019. “Carolyn is a dedicated, thoughtful leader, who puts the best interests of kids before all else,” Evers said. “She is known and respected throughout the education community for her commitment to equity and her work to help all students reach academic success. I have known Carolyn for the better part of three decades and know she will be an exceptional
state superintendent.” Stanford Taylor is the first female, African American appointed to serve as an assistant state superintendent. She will be Wisconsin’s first African American state superintendent of public instruction. Carolyn currently oversees the Special Education Team, one of the agency’s largest teams; the Student Services /Prevention and Wellness Team, which focuses on student safety, support, and engagement; and the residential schools for students who are blind and visually impaired in Janesville and students who Carolyn Stanford Taylor are deaf and hard of hearing in Delavan. She is the 2018 Virginia Hart Special Rec- ognition recipient, an honor
bestowed by the Department of Administration, Division of Personnel Management, to female state employees who are making a difference through their service to Wisconsin. “It will be an honor to serve the students, teachers, and families of Wisconsin as the next state superintendent,” Stanford Taylor said. “I am blessed to be surrounded by the talented and devoted staff in the department, who care about the work they do to improve the lives of our state’s youth. I look forward to this opportunity, and know that together, we can continue to advance educational equity for all students.” The state superintendent
of public instruction oversees Wisconsin’s educational system and leads the Department of Public Instruction. The position is a non-partisan, constitutional officer, responsible for providing guidance and oversight to the state’s primary and secondary schools, licensing educators, and administering funds. When a vacancy occurs with the state superintendent, state law allows the governor to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term. The last such appointment took place when then State Superintendent Herbert Grover resigned, and former Governor Tommy G. Thompson appointed Lee Dreyfus.
New York honors Shirley Chisholm, first Black congresswoman in U.S. history, with new statue The firebrand politician once quipped that she would like to be remembered as a woman who ‘had guts’ This past summer, New York City announced its plans to build a new monument to a woman who has made significant contributions to the city, and asked for the public’s help in choosing a potential subject. After deliberating over a list of 1,812 names, officials have revealed their final selection: The upcoming statue will pay tribute to Shirley Chisholm, the firebrand politician who became the first black congresswoman in United States history. Victoria Stapley-Brown of the Art Newspaper reports that the statue will mark the first project undertaken by She Built NYC, an initiative that seeks to correct the lopsided gender representation among New York’s public monuments. According to Jake Offenhartz of Gothamist, at last count there were approximately 145 statues of historical male figures that stand in New York’s five boroughs. The number of historical women represented is paltry by comparison; according to Offenhartz, only “Joan of Arc, Golda Meir, Gertrude Stein, Eleanor Roosevelt, and, most recently, Har riet Tubman” have made the cut. Chisholm, who died in 2005 at age 80, spent her decades-long career battling for gender and racial equality, making her an apt choice for the subject of the new statue. An artist has not yet been selected to carry out the project, but the monument is expected to be completed in 2020. It will sit at one of the entrances to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, the borough
Shirley Chisholm where Chisholm was born in 1924. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants—her mother was born in Christ Church, Barbados and her father was born in colonial British Guiana, now the independent nation of Guyana—she began her working life as a nursery school teacher, but eventually immersed herself in local chapters of activist groups like the League of Women Voters, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Democratic Party Club in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In 1964, she became the second African-American elected to the New York State Legislature. Four years later, she made history as the first black woman to earn a seat in Congress when she was elected to represent Brooklyn’s 12th Congressional District. True to her slogan “unbought and unbossed,”
Chisholm was never particularly worried about making friends in Washington. During her very first floor speech in March of 1969, for instance, she took the opportunity to candidly express her opposition to the Vietnam War. She also refused to accept her initial assignment to the Committee on Agriculture, pushing back against the decision until she was moved to the Veterans' Affairs Committee. “There are a lot more veterans in my district than trees,” she once said. Chisholm was a staunch advocate for education funding, guaranteed minimum incomes for families and women’s advancement in politics; in 1971, she was a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus. The following year, Chisholm entered the presidential primaries as the first woman to ever seek the Democratic nomination. She did not expect
to triumph, and in fact did not win a single primary. But she saw herself as the only candidate who represented the interests of African Americans, and believed that her bid for the presidency, though unsuccessful, marked an important turning point. “Some see my candidacy as an alternate and others as symbolic or a move to make other candidates start addressing themselves to real issues,” Chisholm once said, according to her New York Times obituary. In that same obituary, Chisholm is quoted as saying that she was not interested
in being remembered as “the first black woman congressman.” “I'd like them to say that Shirley Chisholm had guts,” she quipped. “That's how I'd like to be remembered.” Today, Chisholm’s legacy as a bold pioneer endures. Chirlane McCray, first lady of New York City, tells Azi Paybarah of the New York Times that she “can’t think about [Chisholm] and what she accomplished before and after her run and not think ‘Oh, maybe I should do that too, you know?’ She really set an example, for all of us.”

A New Year’s resolution: Bible study (Week 1) Wikipedia® defines New Year’s Resolution as a tradition in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. If you yearn for a closer relationship with God and you want to tap into and experience the transforming power of God’s Word, then allow me to suggest that becoming more disciplined in Bible study and reading is a worthwhile New Year’s Resolution. We will start this year with articles encouraging you to begin your New Year by nurturing your soul by engaging in regular Bible study and reading God’s Word. The Bible is God’s Word to us and when we read it, God will speak through His Word to us. Many Christians, though, have abandoned daily Bible study/reading. Canadian Christian theologian, J. I. Packer once remarked: “If I were the devil,
one of my first aims would be to stop folk from digging into the Bible.” Satan is threatened by believers who are well versed in the Scriptures, who trust God and who firmly stand on the promises of God. When you nurture your soul through daily Bible study, it is your best weapon against Satan. On that note, this month’s series will first address the question ‘What Makes the Bible So Special,’ and then briefly examine biblical inspiration. This series will conclude by describing the benefits of daily studying God’s Word. What makes the Bible so special? For starters, the entire Bible is inspired by God. It is a depository of heavenly instruction containing God’s revelation of Himself and His will to humankind. The Bible also is essentially a basis of moral government, and as a definite and final test
of moral conduct. Moreover, the Bible gives us a correct idea of sin and its penalties, information as to the plan of salvation, and as to the final destiny of the soul. Finally, the Bible is special because it describes God’s dealings with the ancient Jewish people and the early Christian church. It tells us about the great gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, who fulfilled Jewish prophecies of the Messiah. It tells us about the salvation Jesus accomplished through His death on the Cross, His triumph over death in the resurrection, and His promised return to earth. It is the only book that gives us reliable information about the future, about what will
happen to us when we die, and practical wisdom for life here on earth. Beloved, indeed you are responsible for your own spiritual journey; but allow me to suggest that reading and studying God’s Word will transform your life, and renew your mind and heart like no other spiritual activity on this earth! You are encouraged to read the Bible and start your New Year renewed as you seek God’s will for your life! Young people should also be encouraged to read and study the Bible. For the young people in your life, not only tell them why they should read the Bible, but also lead them in how they should read the Bible. As youth and young adults get engaged with the Bible, they too will develop a personal and growing relationship with God. A resource available for youth and young adults is my recently published book, A
Gospel Generation: Bible Study Lessons for Youth Around the Globe. It is a 30-week interactive bible lesson perfect for small groups or individual study. You can order a copy at: www.sspbnbc.com. Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club holds first annual 'Christmas with Dignity' service project
On Saturday, December 15, 2018, the Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club held its first annual Christmas with Dignity Service Project at St. Ann Center-Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The program was designed as a social enterprise and community development project that gives deeply discounted prices on brand-name toys, clothing and books, making purchases affordable for lower income families. For $20 a family could select, purchase and wrap more than $150 in toys and gifts to take home and put under the tree. "We raised $3,000 to make this giving event possible with the intent to bring dignity to the families by offering a hand up instead of a hand out, a process that allows everyone involved to keep giving," said Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club President Diane Beckley. For more information on the organization please visit their Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/milwaukeenorthsunriserotary.
Sheriff-elect Earnell Lucus certified election results and sworn in during private ceremony On Friday, December 14, 2018, Sheriff-elect Earnell Lucus (left) certified his election results and received his certificate of election at a private swearing in ceremony at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. He was joined by his wife, Linda (center) and was sworn in by Chief Judge Maxine Aldridge White. Lucas, a Major League Baseball security official, won the November 6, 2018 election as sheriff after former Sheriff David Clarke resigned in August 2017. Lucas, a 25-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department, retired as a captain in 2002 from the Milwaukee Police Department and went to work for Major League Baseball as chief liaison of security and investigations.

COMMUNITY COLUMN Sharing the positive impact of UW-Milwaukee graduates By Mark A. Mone Chancellor University of WisconsinMilwaukee Graduating from college is an enormous accomplishment. Graduates experience considerable personal growth and transformation through their time at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The positive results don’t stop with the person, however. UWM graduates impact thousands of lives as they find ways to battle diseases, save organizations millions of dollars, teach at public and private schools, and invent new ways to solve problems. In December, more than 2,200 UWM students were eligible for commencement, and they have so many inspiring and diverse stories. Some are from our backyard and others from half a world away. I’ll share just a few of these stories from our graduating class. Giselle Irankunda and her
UWM Chancellor Mark Mone shares a few stories about the journeys of recent graduates. family came to the United States seven years ago as refugees from the Congo. She was almost 19 years old when she enrolled at Milwaukee’s South Division High School. A college pathways program helped her arrive at UWM to study civil engineering. With support from student scholarships, Giselle was able
to research public transportation issues with Jie Yu, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. Giselle traveled to Germany, Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo to gather data, and she will begin pursuing her master’s degree in civil engineering at UWM next semester.
Parker May described himself as an average student with no clear direction when he enrolled at UWM after graduating from high school. At the end of his second year at UWM, he hadn’t yet chosen a major when he enrolled in Chemistry 101. Parker credits Christine Carlson, a senior lecturer, with teaching him that how he was as a high school student did not define him as a college student. He got to push the reset button. Parker went on to study in Mexico, win an award for undergraduate research and volunteer as a mentor for struggling students in Milwaukee Public Schools. He graduated with a degree in biochemistry and is headed to medical school. Brought up on a dairy farm in northeastern Wisconsin, Alyssa Fischer said that coming to UWM “gave me an entirely new perspective.” She became captain of UWM’s women’s basketball team and a star on and off the court. She’s been active on UWM’s
Student - Athlete Advisory Committee and involved in the Athletes in Action/ Cru Christian ministry, Ignite Leadership Institute, the Athletic Board Committee as well as Nonprof-IT, which helps nonprofits in the Milwaukee area with their websites and technology issues. Alyssa completed a double major – in psychology as well as information science and technology – in 3 1/2 years. With another 1 1/2 years of basketball eligibility remaining, she plans to keep playing for the Panthers while working on a graduate degree. Giselle, Parker and Alyssa are just a few examples of the diverse and inspiring individuals who graduate from UWM. Combine them with all others who graduated earlier in the year, and you have more than 5,500 students who earned their degrees from UWM in 2018. They are the remarkable women and men who continue to move forward to positively impact others in our world.
Bulletin Board Milwaukee Parkside students plant, grow, cook, and eat garden crops Students at Milwaukee Parkside have put their gardens to bed for the winter after raising their own produce and exploring multicultural recipes. Grades 1 through 8 participated in a full year of planning, planting, nurturing, harvesting, and cooking that led to sampling of delicious ethnic dishes from vegetables grown in the school’s Multicultural Gardens. Beginning in the spring of 2018, 3rd graders designed a Food Tradition survey to learn what types of foods were enjoyed by Parkside families. The survey revealed that families identify with 25 different countries and cook a wide range of ethnic cuisines. The recipes collected from families served as inspiration for the next step of the program–selecting vegetables to plant. Under the guidance of Parkside’s Agriculture Program Coordinator, students planted seeds in the school’s two hoop houses. Parkside also has an aquaponics lab, raised bed gardens, butterfly learning labs, and perennial beds that are integrated into the school’s curriculum.
Crops were tended throughout spring and summer. In class, students had opportunities to work with local chefs and learn how to transform harvested food into delicious dishes. Family members were also invited into school to cook with their students and a chef to learn about seasonal, nutrient-dense recipes. In November, Parkside partnered with Bay View High School to host a Fall Harvest Meal. Parkside 6th and 7th graders took part in planning, prepping, cooking, designing, plating, and serving a multicultural meal. Foods were harvested from the Parkside Multicultural Gardens and included swiss chard, collard greens, and butternut squash. About 40 guests were served.

SENIOR LIVING

Senior Living
Brought to you by :
Seven winter safety tips for seniors
Help older people prepare for power outages and more unique challenges of wintertime weather. During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for anyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses -- especially for seniors. Finding elderly care to assist your senior on a regular basis can help keep them safe during any season. Check out the tips below that are specific to winter for preventing common cold-weather dangers that the elderly population faces. 1. Avoid slipping on ice Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall. "Unfortunately, falls are a common occurrence for senior citizens, especially during the winter months," says Dr. Stanley Wang, a physician at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. Often these falls cause major injuries such as hip and wrist fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. While younger people often recover relatively quickly from such injuries, older adults face complications, which Dr. Wang says are a leading cause of death from injury in men and women over the age of 65. Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and nonskid soles, and stay inside until the roads are clear. Re-
place a worn cane tip to making walking easier. Take off shoes as soon as you return indoors because often snow and ice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slippery conditions inside. 2. Dress for warmth Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia -- a condition where the body temperature dips too low. According to the CDC, more than half of hypothermia-related deaths were of people over the age of 65. So, don't let indoor temperatures go too low and dress in layers. Going outside? Wear warm socks, a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. In very cold temperatures, cover all exposed skin. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs. Your body temperature should never dip below 95 degrees -- if it does, get med-
ical assistance immediately. 3. Fight wintertime depression Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid these issues, family members can check in on seniors as often as possible or send their loved one to adult day care; a short, daily phone call can also make a big difference. Seniors can also arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, where each person looks in on one or two others daily. 4. Check the car Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. But it is especially dangerous for older people, who may not drive as often anymore or whose reflexes may not be
as quick as they once were. Get your car serviced before wintertime hits -- or ask a family member to bring it to a garage for you. Checking things like the oil, tires, battery and wipers can make a big difference on winter roads. Also make sure your AAA membership is up-todate in case of emergencies. If driving is necessary during the winter, review safe and reliable senior transportation options. 5. Prepare for power outages Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Move around a lot to raise your body temperature. Check out this winter weather checklist from the CDC to make sure you have everything you may need. 6. Eat a varied diet Because people spend more time indoors and may eat a smaller variety of foods, nutritional deficits -- espe-
cially Vitamin D deficiency -- can be a problem. Nicole Morrissey, a registered dietician in southwest Michigan, recommends consuming foods that are fortified with Vitamin D, such as milk, grains and seafood options like tuna and salmon. 7. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to. The most important tip to keep in mind during the colder months is to ask for help. If you need to clear your property of snow and ice, don't hesitate to ask a family member or neighbor, or hire a professional. Arrange rides to the grocery store and doctor's appointments; many communities have shuttle services specifically for seniors. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Wintertime certainly poses challenges for seniors, but with a bit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy and experience the joys of springtime soon enough.

Recipes for Meal Time Fight the cold with better-for-you comfort foods Few things go together quite like cold weather and comfort foods. However, those hearty dishes that are typically craved on blustery days are usually not classified as “healthy.” With the right approach, though, you can put a better-for-you twist on some of your favorite dishes that can keep you cozy and satiated during the winter season. For example, you can put a grown-up twist on grilled cheese and tomato soup with this recipe for Creamy Tomato and Roasted Pepper Soup with Cheddar Cracker Melts.
Stir in broth, tomatoes, roasted red peppers and bay leaves; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer 15-20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Discard bay leaves. Let cool slightly. Transfer to blender; puree in batches until smooth. Stir in cream, remaining salt, 1 tablespoon chives and vinegar.
