On Monday, December 26, 2022, the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 West Center St., presented the 2022 opening ceremony of Kwanzaa, an annual celebration of African American culture held from December 26 to January 1, culminating in gift-giving and a feast of faith, called Karamu Ya Imani. It celebrates the seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo Saba. The first night is Umoja (Unity) which was hosted by the Wisconsin Black Historical Society; night two, Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) was hosted by Africans On The Move. Franco Harris, legendary Pittsburgh Steelers running back, dead at 72

Iconic Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Franco Harris died on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, CBS News reported. He was 72.

Harris' death was confirmed to the station by his family. No cause of death was provided.

The four-time Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowler was drafted by the Steelers and 13th overall pick in 1972 after playing for Joe Paterno at Penn State.

During his illustrious NFL career, Harris rushed for more than 11,000 yards with the Steelers, becoming the leading rusher in team history, and was named the MVP of Super Bowl IX.

Harris became part of history forever with his "Immaculate Reception" at Three Rivers Stadium in the Divisional Round of the 1972 playoffs. It was voted the greatest play in NFL history during the league's 100th anniversary season in 2020, The Associated Press pointed out.

His death came two days before the 50th anniversary of the play.

A member of the Steelers Hall of Honor, Harris was set to have his #32 jersey retired by the team, joining Ernie Stautner and Joe Greene as the only two other players in franchise history to received that honor.

"Franco was the heart and soul of our team," Greene said in a tribute posted by the Steelers.

"It is difficult to find the appropriate words to describe Franco Harris' impact on the Pittsburgh Steelers, his teammates, the City of Pittsburgh, and Steelers Nation,"

said Steelers president Art Rooney II. "From his rookie season, which included the Immaculate Reception, through the next 50 years, Franco brought joy to people on and off the field. He never stopped giving back in so many ways. He touched so many, and he was loved by so many."

Many athletes, coaches and politicians took to social media to pay tribute to Harris. President Biden shared a heartfelt remembrance of why the team, and Franco in particular, "are close to my heart.

"It was this week fifty years ago when my first wife and infant daughter were killed

and my two young sons were badly injured in a car accident while they were out getting a Christmas tree," he said in a statement released by the White House. "I had just been elected to the U.S. Senate and I was in Washington when I got the call and rushed home to Delaware.

"I rarely left my boys' bedside until they got better. But one day I did go shopping for them. When I returned, they were smiling for the first time since the accident. Art Rooney, the generous and honorable owner of the Steelers, had flown out with a couple of players, including Franco, and the tough as nails Rocky Bleier. Busy with their own lives, they took the time to be with my boys, sign footballs, and then left with no publicity. A small act of kindness that meant the world to us."

He concluded, "May God bless Franco Harris — a dear friend, a good man, and a great American."

Former President Barack Obama tweeted, "I grew up watching Franco Harris, and

had the honor of getting to know him years later. He was an extraordinary man on and off the field, and will be missed."

Harris was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Hall of Fame released a statement on Tuesday, December 20, 2022: "The entire team at the Pro Football Hall of Fame is immensely saddened today.

"We have lost an incredible football player, an incredible ambassador to the Hall and most importantly, we have lost one of the finest gentlemen anyone will ever meet. Franco not only impacted the game of football, but he also affected the lives of many, many people in profoundly positive ways."

Harris is survived by his wife Dana Dokmanovich and his son, Dok.

Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters dies at age 74

Anita Pointer, one of the founding members of the R&B group The Pointer Sisters, has died at age 74, according to her publicist Roger Neal.

Pointer passed away Saturday, December 31, 2022, at her home in Los Angeles where she was surrounded by her family, Neal said in a statement to CNN. The cause of death was cancer, he said.

“While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada and her sisters June and Bonnie and at peace,” Pointer’s family said in a

statement. “Heaven is a more loving beautiful place with Anita there.”

“She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long. Her love of our family will live on in each of

us,” the statement said, while also asking that the family’s privacy be respected “during this period of grief and loss.”

The four Pointer Sisters began singing together more than 50 years ago in their

hometown church in Oakland, CA, where their father ministered. Bonnie Pointer and her youngest sister, June, made their professional singing debut as a duo in 1969. They later recruited older sisters Anita and Ruth to join them, before releasing their first album together in 1973.

The group won their first Grammy Award for their crossover hit, “Fairytale,” in 1974. They are also known for hits like “Slow Hand,” “Neutron Dance,” and “Jump.”

The group won three Grammy Awards and had 13 US Top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985.

The year 2023 is in the house; a new year for the wonderful people of the planet earth. There will be the usual resolutions made and later broken. The holiday season is over and for many people it is time to pay for 2022 festivities. As we head into the blank pages of the year 2023, I have a few suggestions for the citizens of earth.

The first suggestion is to release all negativity out of your life. Negativity comes in all forms and people. Let the negativity go. Life is grand and your mind will accept the beauty of it when you rid yourself of negativity. There are situations in life that would not be so bad if you let the negativity that is influencing your thoughts fade away. Sometimes in order to do this you have to say goodbye to people. Many people in your life are bastions of negativity. Do not be afraid to distance yourself from anyone who is bringing negativity to you. You may have to say goodbye to fam-

ily and old friends, but the results are worth it.

Once the negativity is released from your life start assessing yourself and situa-

tion. Now that you are not bogged down with negativity you can analyze your life clearly. See everything about yourself, even appearance, and embrace you. Once you embrace you, you can change you. With a positive mindset you can be, do or achieve anything you want on this planet. This ability will manifest once you are thinking clearly and know what it is you want to achieve. Be sure your goals are ones that you want to embrace and not goals society, family or brainwashing via education has placed upon you. Remember, you chose where you are and only you can change where you are and pick where you are going.

Let go of fear. Once you have an understanding of who you are and where you want to go, make it happen. Do not let fear of failure hinder your progress to the goal you want for yourself. Do not let societal fears dictate what you do with your life. This is your life, not society's; do what you want with it. Fear can block people from using their true talents to manifest the life situations they truly want. Fear keeps people locked into life situations they do not want, but are scared to step out of. This is why you must let some people go out of your life. Many people are in situations they hate and unconsciously want others to be in similar situations. These people use fear

to keep their friends and relatives in the same state of misery they reside in. Leave fear and the “you-don’t-want-to risk-it” people in 2022.

Another thing that bogs down individual progress is self-doubt. Once you let go of fear and make a decision, follow through. Do not burn your own bridges down by second-, third-, and twenty-guessing yourself. Doubt keeps a person locked into a shell of their true potential. When you combine fear with self-doubt, you have a volatile cocktail of failure. You are a powerful, positive beacon for good. Do not let doubt of yourself keep you imprisoned in a mental redoubt of mediocrity. Understand yourself and your ability, goals and decide to achieve these and don’t question your decisions.

Welcome to 2023, wonderful people. Remember, the world is what you make it. If you don’t use your talents to reshape your life, then someone else will. This last statement is extremely true for people of color around the world.

On Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center, the YWCA Gala Awards Ceremony and 2022 Impact Awards was held. The YWCA Southeast Wisconsin (YWCA SEW) President and CEO Tracy L. Williams stated that the first Gala and Awards Ceremony was the power of collaboration through partners and champions whose lives create impact on the community. The amazing show was directed by Frank Gatson, Jr., who engaged community members from all walks of life. Frank's directing career was influenced early on by his work with Michael Jackson on his Smooth Criminal music video. He also directed and choreographed for Brandy, Beyonce', EnVogue, and so many more. Frank and Brandy are currently working together on some amazing new projects. The YWCA is headquartered in the heart of Milwaukee's Bronzeville Arts and Entertainment District, which is a thriving community on Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive. Through a racial justice lens, we have the opportunity to lead change. We serve the most diverse communities of the state of Wisconsin to improve the social determinants of health through education, economic empowerment, arts, and athletics. YWCA SEW's programs are intergenerational, designed to benefit communities, especially through empowered black and brown women and girls. The program was hosted by Brandy, Luke James, Andrea Williams, and Tracy L. Williams. Special guest included choreographer Anthony Burrell, Olympic Hero and World Champion Carl Lewis, Josie Thompson, and MC Lyte. Amazing performances by Brandy, EnVogue, Chante' Moore, Luke James, 40 plus Double Dutch Club, tap dancing twins Sean and John Scott, Brandon Gray, DOE, and so many more.

This year's Impact Award honorees were Dr. Denita Ball, Kenneth Lock II, Phyllis Smith, Tina Johnson Williams, Orlando Williams, Arlene Skwierawski, Sarah Grant, Nicolas Payne, Austin Ammo Williams, Keith Carrington, Dr. Tanzanique Carrington, Tina Nixon, Beverley Holmes, Albert Holmes, Faithe Colas, Shelia Mayborn, Tamara Moore, and Telisa Yancy.

Basketball legend 'Bo' Ellis visits I.D.E.A.L.

At I.D.E.A.L. School on December 16, 2022, students heard messages of how success is earned through hard work. Marquette basketball legend and retired NBA player Maurice "Bo" Ellis shared inspiring stories from college, sports, and life. Ellis stated that he believes in the power of youth and serves as a coach to children on and off the court.

While at Marquette University, Ellis was captain of the 1977 men’s NCAA cham- pionship basketball team and was MVP in 1975 and 1977,

School

playing under coaches Al McGuire and Hank Raymonds. He played three years in the NBA and later in Europe. Ellis also spent a number of years serving as a talent scout for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ellis enjoys traveling to schools to share his message about why school and good attendance are important. I.D.E.A.L. was his third school visit during the Fall 2022 semester. Ahead of the event, he sent a delivery of Marquette winter caps to the

school as a memento of the visit.

Students were excited to hear from the basketball legend and took his message to heart, with a number of children pledging to work hard in school.

I.D.E.A.L. School (Individualized Developmental Educational Approaches to Learning) is located at 1420 W. Goldcrest Ave., Milwaukee, 53221.

Milwaukee Public Schools Spelling Bee kicks off

Milwaukee Public School (MPS) students had the chance to show off their spelling skills this December ahead of the annual districtwide Spelling Bee finals. Four schools—Bryant, Victory, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Maple Tree –held preliminary rounds to determine winners who will advance to the main event in April 2023.

At Maple Tree School, the ability to spell the word 'syllable' determined the winner on December 14, 2022. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 faced off in the challenge that required hard work, spelling

smarts, poise, and composure. The top three spellers from the school will advance to the districtwide Spelling

Bee finals in April.

First place went to fourth-grader Amira Thor-Montgomery. When

asked about her success, Amira said she practiced at home and even had mock spelling bees with the help of her family.

Second place went to third-grader Timani Wilson, and third place was captured by fifth-grader D’Anthony Knox.

The district Spelling Bee promotes literacy skills such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking by offering learning through fun competition. Spelling is a life skill that will benefit students during ACT testing, college applications,

scholarships, resume writing, and more.

"I'm filled with great pride," said Dr. Patricia Ellis, MPS Director of Equity, Access, and Inclusion and organizer of the Spelling Bee. "This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop skills they're going to use for a lifetime."

More preliminary events will be held throughout the district in the coming months. Watch for the main event in April 2023!

Verizon unveils Innovative Learning Lab at Longfellow School

Milwaukee Public Schools is proud to announce the unveiling of a Verizon Innovative Learning Lab at H. W. Longfellow School, made possible by Verizon through a partnership with Heart of America and the J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute at Arizona State University. The new lab will give students and teachers access to emerging technology such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), 3D printing, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Longfellow is the second school in MPS to receive an Innovative Learning Lab, with O.W. Holmes School opening a lab in 2021. Eleven other MPS schools are part of the Verizon family and offer Verizon Innovative Learning as part of the curriculum. An Immersive Media Lab is on the horizon for one MPS school during the 2023-24 school year.

As part of Verizon’s commitment to digital inclusion, the company works with its nonprofit partners to provide free technology, free internet access, and hands-on learning

experiences to help students receive the education they deserve to help prepare them for today’s digital economy. With the goal to fundamentally change the way teachers teach and students learn, Verizon Innovative Learning is giving students hands-on experiences with emerging technologies. Heart of America leads the transformation of the state-of-the-art space in collaboration with school and district teams, and the J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute at Arizona State University provides a project-based curriculum and training for teachers.

“We are excited for the learning opportunities that will be possible for our students through expanding our network of Verizon Innovative Learning Labs at MPS,” said MPS superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley. “This lab will allow children to enhance their technological skills to prepare for college and will introduce options in the growing career areas of computer science.”

Ten healthy New Year’s resolutions you’ll actually keep

Nobody plans to quit their resolutions when they make them; yet studies show that 23 percent of people barely make it through the first week. In fact, only 19 percent of people who make resolutions commit to them for the long haul. Fortunately, you can be a part of the latter group if you make the right resolutions.

1. Add simple exercises

Being more active is a typical resolution but people tend to fail if their goals are unrealistic. You’re more likely to keep it if you make things simple.

You can take the stairs more often, walk to meet a friend instead of taking a taxi, or try a short guided workout in the morning.

Do you want to go even smaller? Lift your leg for 60 seconds at a time while you brush your teeth.

2.

Combine outdoor time with socializing

Spending some time outdoors and being with your friends has been proven to improve your overall health; so why not combine them? Plan an outdoor activity with your friends so you can catch up while in nature. If you can work on a garden together, that’s even better.

3.

Create a reasonable cleaning schedule

It’s not hard for your home and car to become cluttered. It might be the norm to have a large decluttering exercise or a huge clean-up, but this can be overwhelming and unsustainable.

It’s good to create a smaller daily or weekly schedule that you can maintain. You shouldn’t shy away from delegating tasks either.

4. Find a financial app or two

Another big resolution is financial stability. The details can vary but can include saving more, investing, or cutting spending.

This is a great time to use technology to your advantage. There are apps that can show you easy ways to accomplish your goals and your bank might even have an app that can help you grow your wealth automatically.

5.

Make your Bed

This is a really simple one that has a huge impact. A welcoming bed is an essential part of your bedtime routine. Believe it or not, you’ll fall asleep more easily and quickly at night if you make your bed in the morning.

6. Replace one beverage with water daily

Last year’s most popular resolution was eating healthier and 2023 is unlikely to be different. One foundation of a healthy diet is drinking enough water so replacing one beverage per day with a glass of water is a good place to start.

7. Kick one bad thing out of your diet

Many diet changes fail because those people are trying to revamp things too quickly. You’re better off removing one unhealthy thing at a time and replacing it with a healthy alternative. For example, your favorite fruits can replace sweets and chips.

8. Try one new thing monthly

Studies show that trying new things can boost your mental health. It doesn’t have

to be something big. It can range from volunteering in your community to trying a new yoga class.

9. Plan one weekly meal Meal planning can help you to maintain your diet and take the stress out of deciding what to eat every day. However, it might feel overwhelming if you’ve never done it before.

You can start by picking one meal per week to plan. As you consider the recipe, you’ll know what to get at the store and find easy ways to prepare. Over time, you can plan a meal more often.

10. Develop a simple skincare routine

This resolution only requires some initial research –what are the minimum skincare products you need for healthy skin? In many cases,

Remembering those we have lost…

the answer is a good moisturizer and a product that contains retinol. If you have a skin condition, you might need more specific products but the aim is to keep things simple.

How to avoid quitting

According to researchers, there were several key factors behind why people don’t stick to their resolutions. A few of these were the lack of planning, underestimating how much work the new resolution entailed, and the lack of self-monitoring. You can avoid these pitfalls by putting some serious thought into the changes you want to make. It helps to make small changes and be realistic about how much you can really take on with your current responsibilities. Even though the 10 resolutions listed seem simple at the outset, it’s in your best interest to detail what doing them would mean for you.

As the year comes to an end, there’s a lot of pressure to do something new and make changes. However, it doesn’t make sense to commit to something you won’t follow through on. You should think about your resolutions carefully. Making one change that you can stick to is better than making several changes and sticking to none of them.
