Governor Evers announces appointment of Major Anthony Burrell as Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Governor Tony Evers announced the appointment of Major Anthony Burrell as Superintendent of the Wisconsin State Patrol effective January 20, 2019. Raised in Milwaukee, Burrell has a law enforcement career spanning nearly 30 years. After graduating with the State Patrol’s 40th recruit class in July of 1990, Burrell began his career as a trooper in St. Croix County. In 2006, he was promoted to sergeant, to lieutenant in 2012, and in March 2015, Burrell was named captain of the

11-county Northeast Region – Fond du Lac Post. Following the tragic shooting death of Trooper Trevor Casper on March 24, 2015, Burrell was awarded the Medal of Valor - the State Patrol’s highest decoration for bravery. “Major Anthony Burrell has a long and decorated history of public service,” Evers said. “Under his leadership, the Wisconsin State Patrol will continue to prioritize the safety of Wisconsinites and help build stronger Major communities.” Anthony Burrell In December 2016, Burrell was promoted to major and deputy director of the

Kohl's donates $750,000 to increase access to nutritious meals for Milwaukee-area families On Tuesday, January 15, 2019, Kohl’s announced a donation of $750,000 to the Hunger Task Force to increase access to nutritious meals for local families, children and seniors through the expansion of the Hunger Task Force MyPlate program. Through MyPlate – a healthy eating guide influenced by the USDA MyPlate food model – the nearly 50,000 Milwaukee area residents the Hunger Task Force serves monthly learn how to choose the right types and amounts of foods to consume daily to improve their health and wellbeing. “Kohl’s is proud to continue our partnership with the Hunger Task Force to provide even more healthy meals, food resources and information to enrich the overall health and well-being of families in the greater Milwaukee area,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s senior vice president of communications. “We applaud the work Hunger Task Force is doing to change the way our community approaches hunger relief by encouraging healthy food donations and ensuring all families have access to nutritious food options.” Kohl’s grant will fund the conversion of nine Hunger Task Force network pantries in the greater Milwaukee area into new Hunger Task Force MyPlate pantries, increasing the total number of MyPlate pantries from 30 to 39. The donation will also help purchase, distribute and store the nearly 10 million pounds of food used to stock the nonprofit organization’s 70 local pantries and provide community nutrition education programming led by Hunger Task Force’s Community Network Dietitian. “Our MyPlate program delivers healthy food with dignity and provides a community-wide safety net,” said

Sherrie Tussler, Hunger Task Force executive director. “Kohl’s generous support helps ensure we can distribute more than 55,000 healthy meals free of charge to vulnerable families, children and seniors every month through our MyPlate initiative.” From June through August, Hunger Task Force serves a record number of meals to children because they lose access to the breakfast and lunch served at school or daycare. To ensure children are fed three meals

a day, Kohl’s funding will provide nearly 65,000 nutritious suppers this summer at easily accessible, kid-friendly public settings in the greater Milwaukee area including: recreational programs, youth camps and public parks. Kohl’s donation is made possible through the company’s philanthropic program, Kohl’s Cares®, which sells children’s books and toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit to support happier and healthier communities nationwide.

State Patrol’s Bureau of Field Operations which oversees about 385 law enforcement personnel and an annual budget of $45 million. President of the National Black State Troopers Coalition, Burrell has a bachelor’s degree in finance and a minor in management from Upper Iowa University. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. Burrell and his wife Brenda have two children. “The men and women of the Wisconsin State Patrol

have a proud, 80-year history of public service and I’m humbled for the opportunity to carry on that tradition,” Burrell said. “I’ve always believed that working in law enforcement is a noble calling, a way to enhance public safety while making a positive impact on the citizens and communities we serve.” Former Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent J.D. Lind retired as State Patrol Superintendent last fall following nearly 25 years in law enforcement.

A New Year’s resolution: Bible study (Week 5) “…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” - Isaiah 40:31

tent Bible study which will prove to be spiritually enhancing leading to a deeper walk with God so that you can face the New Year with hope! Make room for daily Bible study In order for the information received during Bible study to materialize and be beneficial, believers must make room in their lives for daily Bible study. Set aside time each day (at least 15-30 minutes is recommended) to study God’s Word. If you are not a morning person, then engage in Bible study during the evening. Whatever time of day you set aside, the key is consistency. This will require sacrifice, but the effort will be worth it. Tim LaHaye in How to Study the Bible for Yourself offered this intuitive thought: “Dr. M. R. DeHaan, the late founder of the nationally aired program Radio Bible

Whenever we enter into a New Year, there is normally the looking back at the past, assessing the present and looking forward towards the future. Somewhere sandwiched in between are the promises we make to ourselves to make positive changes in our lives, such as giving up certain vices by making New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution, according to Wikipedia, is a tradition in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. This column this month has sought to encourage you to adopt a worthwhile resolution of regular and consis-

Class, once said, “To come to Christ costs nothing, to follow Christ costs something, but to serve Christ will cost you everything.” LaHaye posits, “…There is a cost involved in spiritual growth and maturity and that cost is the time it takes to learn God’s principles from His Word and the submission of your life to them. However, the rewards and results are well worth the sacrifice they require.” As you study the Bible, God will show you the path He wants you to take and the light you should follow. Since the Bible contains timeless principles for daily living, and given that Christ himself regarded the Scriptures in its

entirety to be God-given and indefectible authority (Matt. 5:17ff); believers must study it and allow it to guide them as they grow in their walk and devotion to God. The time has come to bring a divine frame of reference to our cities, communities and churches, a group of uncompromising, dedicated, biblically educated, spiritually maturing men and women who have one overriding goal in life; that is to do all to the glory of God.

O’Keefe Boettcher was honored as 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Teacher of the Year for her dedication to teaching students about the life and beliefs of Dr. King. During her 20 years of teaching in MPS, King’s legacy has been an important part of her curriculum.

O’Keefe Boettcher, an English teacher, has actively encouraged her students to take part in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Speech, and Writing contests. She has also been an activist and leader in the community. This school year, she led discussions with students about spreading peace and positive messages, and took photos of students forming hand gestures such as peace signs, hearts, and the word “love” in sign language.

January is “National Glaucoma Awareness Month” Are you at risk for a leading cause of blindness in Black Americans? By Cheryl L. Dejewski Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because the most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years— until severe permanent damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, especially for blacks. In fact, black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk rate, and at least one in five age 75 and older has the disease. How can you protect yourself ? The partners at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that has focused on caring for Milwaukee’s black community since 1985, advise that you schedule regular eye exams to check for glaucoma, strictly follow eye drop and laser treatment recommendations, and learn the following facts. How glaucoma affects vision “The front of your eye is filled with a fluid that supplies nutrients and maintains the eye’s shape. If the proper amount does not continually pump in and drain out, pressure builds up. Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve (the part of the eye that carries visual information to the brain). If this pressure persists without being diagnosed and treated, it can cause permanent loss of side vision and eventually possibly all sight,” explained Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthal-

Dangers of having glaucoma Glaucoma-related “tunWhen undetected and untreated, glaucoma can neling” (loss) of side vision cause a gradual “tunneling” of vision that progress- makes it difficult to climb stairs, stay in the proper drives unnoticed until permanent sight loss occurs. ing lane, detect obstacles, etc. Glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of havmology practice that cares Other factors: Diabetes ing a car accident by up to six for tens of thousands of (doubles the risk of glauco- times and triples the risk of glaucoma patients. ma), nearsightedness, steroid falling. use, and previous eye injury. procedures can often be used to increase fluid drainage or decrease fluid production. These procedures take just minutes to perform and are typically covered by Medicare and most insurance plans,” explained Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Benefits of advanced laser and surgical treatment “These advanced procedures are often highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for prescription eye drops. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” said Michael Raciti, MD, an eye surgeon who conducts continuing education lectures for fellow doctors and presentations for the general public. “Your eye care specialist can evaluate the need, candidacy and potential benefits of these or other options for your specific case.” Detection + Treatment = Vision Protection “Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for check-ups or follow recommended eye drop guidelines,” said David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. More information Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7035 for a free educational booklet and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening (usually covered by insurance or Medicare) at their offices on 7th & Wisconsin Avenue, Mayfair Road across from the mall, or 102nd & National Avenue. Authenticity- be yourself !

By: WFA Staffing

have hired a person who doesn’t really exist. You cannot be someone other than who you really are. Actors and actresses play roles but that is only for the time they are onstage or in front of the camera. You cannot play a role as an employee for 40 or more hours a week and for 50 weeks out of the year with two weeks of vacation to be your real self.

Authenticity is important. Authenticity in interviews is very important. What is authenticity? How can we be authentic in interviews? It is actually quite easy to define. We define interview authenticity as you being you in the interview. You are who you are. You have hair of a certain color; you are so many inches tall; you weigh so many pounds, you talk the way you talk, and your attitudes and experience are what they are. That is the authentic you. Authenticity is not something you can conjure up for specific occurrences such as an interview. Too often, we have seen the situation where a person studies all he or she can about the company with which they are about to in-

terview. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not; you ought to learn as much as possible about your prospective employer before you interview. But you should not try to be someone you are not and never have been. Being authentic during the interview simply

means that you act like yourself. You don’t create some new version of yourself because you think that might work better for you during the interview. You might be able to fool the interviewer once in a great while, but even then what have you gained? The company thinks they

do just that. There can be a lot of pressure to land that new job. Bills are piling up; your spouse is counting on it; you need that ideal position to feel good about yourself. But, no matter how rough the situation might be, do not fall into the trap of trying to act like a different person because you think that’ll get the offer to come your way. It will almost always do just the opposite. Ten networking tips to help you make a great first impression Having the right professional contacts can help you expand your business and open the door to new opportunities. One of the best ways to meet those contacts is by attending networking events. Whether you're at an industry-specific conference or a general entrepreneur meetup, you're sure to connect with people who can help you grow. The trick to success is properly introducing yourself. You want to let the other person know what you and your business are all about, without coming across as self-promotional. Follow this advice from 10 members of Forbes Communications Council if you want to make a great first impression at your next networking event. 1. Build genuine personal connections. Networking events are a bit like being set up on a blind date, and similar rules apply. Don't take over the conversation and talk about yourself and your business. People want to feel that you are genuinely interested in them. Ask questions to get to know the other person and understand what they do. As you build a personal connection, potential business

opportunities often present themselves. - Hannah Taylor, Ironistic 2. Smile. Not only does smiling make it easier for people to connect with you because you are more open and welcoming, it also helps them remember you -- and your company. Show real interest in what the other person does and ask questions before talking about you. Your smile and authentic self will go a long way toward a positive first impression. - Melani Deyto, TextMarks 3. Listen when you join a conversation, then show you were listening. Take a few minutes to listen to the conversation when joining a group of people. An effective way to make a good first impression is to join a conversation with a comment that shows you were listening to the current group of people. Acknowledge a key point to add to the conversation rather than refocusing on you and your work. Nothing will stop a conversation faster. - Kiersten Williams, Walk West 4. Be yourself and don't try to sell.

Lin Grosman, GoDataFeed.com.

I've found that the best approach for any networking event is to be myself and talk about my business in a casual, non-salesy way. When I discuss my business, I always try to share, not sell. I also do a bit of homework on which connections make sense for me to connect with so I am focusing my energy chatting with people who are relevant to my career and industry. -

5. Follow up with good follow-up questions Be prepared with questions that help you learn about others, hold mutually interesting conversations and make it easy to share what you want to about yourself or your business when it's appropriate.

As the tax filing season approaches, there are steps you can take now to speed up the filing process. The faster your return is filed, the faster you get your refund. Even if you end up owing money to the IRS, knowing the amount due sooner gives you more time to come up with the funds needed to pay your tax bill. Here are things you can do now to get organized: 1. Look for your tax forms. Forms W-2, 1099, and 1098 will start hitting your mailbox. Look for them and get them organized. Create a checklist of the forms to make sure you aren't miss-

3. Collect your statements and sort them. Using last year's tax return, gather and sort your necessary tax records. ing any. 2. Don't wait for Form 1095s. Once again, proof of health insurance coverage forms is delayed. The IRS is OK with filing your return

prior to receiving the proof of insurance form as long as you can provide other forms of proof.

4. Clean up your auto log. You should have the necessary logs to support your qualified business miles, moving miles, medical miles and charitable miles driven by you.

5. Coordinate your deductions. If you and someone else may share a dependent, confirm you are both on the same page as to who will claim the dependent. This is true for single taxpayers, divorced taxpayers, taxpayers with elderly parents/ grandparents, and parents with older children.
