22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast honors King's legacy by recognizing locals for their community work

On Monday, January 21, 2019, YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee hosted the 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago St. The breakfast is one of the largest MLK Day events in the state, and honors Dr. King's legacy by recognizing those in the community that continue his work. During the event, area students performed their award-winning spoken word oral art presentation honoring the life of Dr. King. Pictured are (back row, from left) Dr. Todd Beadle and Reginald Johnson of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; along with (front row, from left) first place winner (10-13 yrs.) Tyrone Morris; first place winner (5-9 yrs.) Lahli Coleman; and first place winner (14-18 yrs.) Amillia Bell. The students received a plaque for their essays, as well as an Amazon Fire tablet.
Wisconsin Black Historical Museum hosts 18th Annual King Fest Celebration On Monday, January 21, 2019, the Wisconsin Black Historical Museum hosted the 18th Annual King Fest Celebration at the Museum, 2620 W. Center St. The event included vendors, video presentations, drumming performances, spoken word poetry, songs and praise dances. There were also a number of guest speakers, including 6th District Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs; and keynote speaker author, historian, psychologist, archivist and professor Dr. Ray Winbush (aka Tikari Bioko). As part of the celebration, the 18th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Writing Contest winners were also announced. Each of the three winners received $500 scholarships. Milwaukee Chapter-National Black Nurses Association hosts 39th Annual Prayer Breakfast

On Saturday, January 12, 2019, the Milwaukee Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) hosted their 39th Annual Prayer Breakfast at the Aurora Sinai Medical Center Rapkin Auditorium, 945 N. 12th Street. Traditionally, the NBNA have always started the new year off with a prayer breakfast as it sets the tone for the origination for the coming year. As a service origination the NBNA wants to establish their united commitment to serve their community and walk together in love and unity throughout the new year. The event is also a chance for the group to fellowship with those in their profession of nursing, and other community organizations. This year's event theme focused on unity, and how working together nurses can make a difference in their profession and their communities. "Thank you nurses, for all you do for your patients and in our community!"
