City battles lead exposure with the first of three testing facilities for children Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett visits briefly before the start of a press conference with a family attending the opening of the first of three children’s elevated leadblood testing clinics on January 22, 2018 at the Southside Health Center. Within the past few weeks, city officials have said there may be as many as 6,400 children whose parents may not have been informed that their child had an initial, elevated finding of exposure to lead. The U.S. Center for Disease Control has found that elevated lead exposure, especially in children under age three, may cause developmental delays (some severe and permanent). Lead is a naturally occurring metal used in a variety of industrial manufacturing processes. At the press conference, Mayor Barrett said long-standing city policy is to encourage a “3-by-3” testing and follow-up program for children found to have elevated levels of lead in their blood during a routine physical. It has long been city policy to inform the parents of Staff Photo children who show evidence of mildly elevated levels of lead in the blood. More serious amounts require a more urgent and thorough response, often including a visit by a trained home health care advisor. Those visits were carried out, according to Mayor Barrett. Most of the lead exposure in Milwaukee is due to lead-based paint used in houses built prior to 1950. The Milwaukee water supply is constantly tested for elevated levels of lead and meets or exceeds all current standards. If someone in your house has received a letter, parents and caregivers are strongly encouraged to have children receive further medical evaluation. There are two free additional testing centers available this week: Northwest Health Center, 7630 W. Mill Rd. on Wednesday January 24, 2018 from 3-6 p.m., and Keenan Health Center, 3200 N. 36th St. on Friday January 26, 2018.

A new year – A fresh start (Week 4) "Cheers To A New Year And Another Chance For Us To Get It Right." - Oprah Winfrey In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul describes how believers should conduct themselves when it comes to the use of their body. Our bodies, along with everything else God has graciously given to us, belongs to Him. God has loaned our bodies to us for our use, but God expects us to use what He has given us wisely, sensibly and not foolishly. Paul describes our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, the place where the Holy Spirit dwells and therefore we must honor our bodies and reverence them. The Apostle Paul goes on to say that we were bought with a price. When we buy something from the store, it belongs to us. We have the right to claim ownership of it because we purchased it. God offered His Son to pay the price for all humans. That price was paid at Calvary when Jesus willingly died for our sins. We therefore are God’s purchased possession. Speaking of Jesus, Paul writes in Titus 2:14 “who gave him-
body to glorify Him. It’s a new year. Make a fresh start this year by making exercise a part of your daily routine. “And he who sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new….” - (Rev. 21:5) The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in self for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own…” Knowing this, Paul concludes that we must therefore glorify God with our bodies. This year, we can make a fresh start by being more intentional in glorifying God with our bodies in exercising! The Mayo Clinic reports for most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends these exercise guidelines: • Aerobic activity. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise during a week. • Strength training. Do

strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week. Aim to do a single set of each exercise, using a weight or resistance level heavy enough to tire your muscles after about 12 to 15 repetitions. Moderate aerobic exercise includes activities such as brisk walking, swimming and mowing the lawn. Vigorous aerobic exercise includes activities such as running and aerobic dancing. Strength training can include use of weight machines, your own body weight, resistance tubing, resistance paddles in the water, or activities such as rock climbing. Families encouraged to explore kindergarten now Now is the time for Milwaukee families to choose a kindergarten or Head Start program to start their 3-, 4or 5-year olds on the path to success. Official enrollment for kindergarten in Milwaukee Public Schools opens Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the MPS Kindergarten Enrollment Fair from 9 a.m. to noon at Milwaukee High School of the Arts, 2300 W. Highland Ave. Enrollment applications can be completed at the Enrollment Fair, online at mpsmke.com/enroll, any MPS school, Welcome Center or the MPS Enrollment Center, 5225 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee. Families can now schedule school visits to see MPS' many outstanding kindergarten and Head Start programs in action. Many options are available for children entering 3-year-old, 4-year-old, and 5-year-old kindergarten. Kindergarten enrollment will remain open until March 4, 2018. Enrolling prior to this deadline improves the chances of children being placed in their first-choice school. Families who choose
their school preferences prior to the opening of enrollment are well prepared to complete the enrollment application. MPS offers a number of popular programs and features in kindergarten. Arts All MPS schools are enjoying expanded arts programming during the 2017-18 school year. With the help of many local arts partners, the arts are infusing history, science, social studies, and math, while also offering students music, theater, dance and visual arts depending on
each school's program. Bilingual MPS language programs are structured to help students master English plus a second language or maintain a native language while learning English. MPS schools can explain programs and help parents determine the best fit for their student's needs. Montessori Montessori programs are offered in several MPS schools, and seats fill quickly. In fact, MPS has the largest number of public Montessori schools in the United States. The Montessori meth-
od focuses on individualized learning, problem solving and student independence. Neighborhood schools MPS neighborhood schools give priority for admission to children living in the area surrounding the school. A neighborhood school is the best choice for many families since neighborhood schools are convenient for transportation, carpools, school events and nearness to classmates. Children from other neighborhoods are admitted as space
permits. Technology To prepare children for first grade and beyond, the use of technology is expanding in Head Start and kindergarten. Technology varies by school and includes the use of SMART Boards, Chromebooks, online learning, and more to develop confident learners. COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM professor makes a difference by mentoring students By Angela McManaman The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Wilkistar Otieno knows firsthand that young women, especially young women of color, need strong mentors and role models. She knows that need is magnified in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math – STEM for short. So she’s committed to making a difference. “What I have seen,” Otieno says, “is that these students may not pursue engineering because of a lack of access to STEM opportunities in their prior educational experiences. Or, they may face a lack of role models.” Women account for less than 15 percent of the engineers working today, and less than 20 percent of college engineering majors are women. The desire to grow those numbers is part of what drives Otieno’s call to mentorship, which also includes her participation in the UWM National Science Foundation Engineering and
Computer Science Scholars Program and K-12 STEM outreach projects. She wears many other hats. In addition to teaching and designing graduate and undergraduate courses in engineering, she conducts longterm research projects with top Wisconsin companies like Rockwell Automation and Harley-Davidson. All the while, she works so her mentees can follow similar paths in their chosen fields. UWM’s STEM-Inspire group pairs every participating STEM major with a faculty mentor, peer mentor and a tutor. Partially funded by the Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, or WiscAMP, it provides opportunities like internships, STEM lectures, workshops, research opportunities and library study nights. Stem-INSPIRE mentors like Otieno seek to build a community among those students, whose majors cam range from mechanical or computer engineering to biological sciences or architecture. Doing so cultivates a sense of belonging, which maximizes their chances for academic and professional success.
It’s the kind of community that Otieno sought 20 years ago at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. She was one of only three women studying mechanical and production engineering there – out of 40 total students – during her undergraduate years. She worked closely with a small group of other underrepresented students, eager to fulfill her dream of becoming an engineer and educator. “I had to work a lot harder than I needed to just to make the point that I belonged in mechanical engineering,” she says. She took seven to eight courses per semester, sleeping five to six hours a night. Today, she participates in corporate research and training programs with industry partners who rely on UWM as a major educator of science and technology professionals. Her graduate students are involved in this research, enhancing their skillset as future engineers and educators. That’s the path Priyanka Pillai is on. In May 2017, she earned her master’s degree from UWM’s College of Engineering & Applied Science, and Otieno’s mentorship played a key role in that success. English is Pillai’s second language, and she worried her English writing skills would hinder work on her master’s thesis. Otieno stepped in as a writing coach, giving Pillai additional articles to read and reviewing early drafts of her writing. “Dr. Otieno made me a better writer,” Pillai says, “because she is always giving her students the push to try something different.” It worked. Today, Pillai is a supplier quality engineer and thinking about pursing her own doctoral degree in engineering.

January is “National Glaucoma Awareness Month”
“Sneak Thief of Sight” threatens black community By Cheryl L. Dejewski Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because the most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years— until severe permanent damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, especially for blacks. In fact, black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk rate, and at least one in five age 75 and older has the disease. How can you protect yourself ? The partners at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that has focused on caring for Milwaukee’s black community since 1985, advise that you schedule regular eye exams to check for glaucoma, strictly follow eye drop and laser treatment recommendations, and learn the following facts. How glaucoma affects vision
“The front of your eye is filled with a fluid that supplies nutrients and maintains the eye’s shape. If the proper amount does not continually pump in and drain out, pressure builds up. Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve (the part of the eye that carries visual information to the brain). If this pressure persists without being diagnosed and treated, it can cause permanent loss of side vision and eventually possibly all sight,” explains Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthalmology practice that cares
for tens of thousands of glaucoma patients. Risk factors Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, lists the following risk factors for glaucoma: • Age: Glaucoma is most common in adults over age 40, and the risk increases with age. • Heredity: People with a sibling or parent who has glaucoma have a 5-10 times

greater risk of developing the disease themselves and should be screened every 1-2 years. • Ethnicity: A black person has a 6-8 times higher risk of going blind from glaucoma than a white person. Hispanics and Asians also have higher risk rates. • Other factors: Diabetes (doubles the risk of glaucoma), nearsightedness, steroid use, and previous eye injury. Symptoms and detection “Since glaucoma and other sight-threatening conditions are typically painless and can progress without symptoms for years, regular eye exams (every two years) are vital after age 40, especially if there is a family history of eye disease,” says Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye surgeon who performs advanced laser and surgical procedures to alleviate glaucoma-related eye pressure. A comprehensive exam should include: Ophthalmoscopy (a look inside at the back of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma, like abnormal optic nerve size and loss of pink coloring); Tonometry (a check of inner eye pressure done either with a puff of air or by painlessly touching the eye); Visual Field Testing (to create a computerized “map” of the existing range of sight); Gonioscopy (use of a special lens to look at the drainage angle in the eye); and an OCT laser scan (a painless scan similar to a CT scan to diagnose, track and treat changes to the optic nerve and retina—often before damage occurs). Dangers of having glaucoma • Glaucoma-related “tunneling” (loss) of side vision makes it difficult to climb stairs, stay in the proper driving lane, detect obstacles, etc. Glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of having a car accident by up to six times and triples the risk of falling. Medical treatment (with prescription eye drops) Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage and vision loss. The most common type is a lifelong condition that requires continual management with prescription eye drops to lower pressure (by either decreasing fluid production or increasing outflow). Advanced laser and surgical treatment “In some cases, when
drops alone cannot control pressure, side effects are intolerable, or multiple drops are required, laser or surgical treatment may be an alternative. SLT (which increases fluid drainage) and ECP (which decreases fluid production) procedures take less than 10 minutes to perform and are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. In addition, our team at Eye Care Specialists has been evaluating several new Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) procedures, including Ab-Interno Canaloplasty (similar in concept to angioplasty) and iStent (a miniature implantable device),” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Benefits of advanced laser and surgical treatment “These advanced procedures are often highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for prescription eye drops. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” says Michael Raciti, MD, an eye surgeon who conducts continuing education lectures for fellow doctors and presentations for the general public. “Your eye care specialist can evaluate the need, candidacy and potential benefits of these or other options for your specific case.” Detection + Treatment = Vision Protection “Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for check-ups or follow recommended eye drop guidelines,” says David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. In the highlight of our interview, from my point of view, Dr. King looked directly at me and began talking about the need for Black people to develop self-esteem. “It’s not just important that our white brothers and sisters respect us,” he said. “We’ve got to respect ourselves. Because with self-esteem comes the success of the mind.” He then stared gently into my eyes and said, “Wouldn’t you agree, young man?” Detectives Russ and Jones then led the way as the group — including the Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker, executive director of New York City’s SCLC — left for a rally in the Milwaukee Auditorium. There, a capacity crowd of 6,000 in Bruce Hall included Mayor Henry Maier and Second Ward Ald. Vel Phillips.

In remembering the Great March on Washington, 55 years ago, we clearly remember the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — the greatest man of the 20th century. In remembering that epoch-making event, I also recall my two interviews of Dr. King. The first was Jan. 28, 1964, with The Milwaukee Star staff at downtown’s storied old Schroeder Hotel. The second was in 1967, as a reporter with the Cleveland Plain Dealer. To my surprise, he recalled meeting me in Milwaukee. Both were highlights of my career. Some of my most cherished memories of Dr. King are personal — especially when we met during his visit here to my hometown to address a fund-raising rally for his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). It was an experience I’ll never forget. That evening, as associate editor of The Star — a ground-breaking Black weekly newspaper — co-workers and I met his plane at Mitchell Field and were part of an airport news conference. I took the accompanying photo of Dr. King with Black police detectives Dewey Russ and Leroy Jones, who provided security during his one day visit. After traveling in separate cars to the Schroeder, we crowded onto a couch in a VIP suite — with Dr. King and I seated side-byside. These moments were captured by a staff photographer in a historic photo with him holding a copy of The Star that appeared prominently in our paper and others — and also accompanies this column. Sadly, everyone else in the photo has since passed away. Ever the gentleman, Dr. King listened as everyone got a chance to talk. As lead interviewer, when I spoke of the positive role of the Black press, he responded firmly. “The Negro press is vitally necessary to readers during this time of the American social revolution,” he said. “In fact, this has always been the case.” He added that “…issues important to our people can be objectively presented in the Negro press; issues the daily press frequently neglects…”
