Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrates 115 years with Hoan Bridge lighting

On Sunday, January 15, 2023, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® (AKA) Epsilon Kappa Omega (EKΩ) Milwaukee Chapter celebrated the 115th anniversary of their sorority by lighting the Hoan Bridge. Nearly 200 of the 385 members of the Epsilon Kappa Omega Milwaukee Chapter showed up for the bridge lighting. EKΩ Chapter is the first alumnae chapter that was chartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 11, 1949. Since its inception, the chapter has made significant strides in Milwaukee with award-winning programs for K-12 students, preparatory workshops for parents and their college-bound children, and community enrichment programs to help build a strong economic legacy.

EKΩ Membership Committee Chair Anesia Hayes said, "We are so excited to celebrate today because this marks the 115th year of scholarship, service, and sisterhood for this illustrious organization. What better way to light up Milwaukee, than to do it with PINK and GREEN lights on the Hoan Bridge!"

National Black Nurse Association chapter hosts installation ceremony

Thursday January 12, 2023, The Milwaukee Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) hosted their installation celebration for their 2023 president and officers at Four Points Sheraton, 8900 N. Kildeer Ct. The local chapter was chartered in 1980 and has played an active role in Milwaukee as a forum for advocacy and implementation strategies that address health equity issues impacting underserved and underrepresented populations. They work to accomplish this through collaboration with private and public agencies and the community. They are also committed to excellence in nursing education and research, and over the years have awarded more than $500,000 in nursing scholarships.

Pictured at the swearing in (left photo, from left) are incoming officers including member-at-large JoAnn Lomax; committees coordinator Evelyn Merriett; president Edna Hudson-Kinzey; secretary Martina Ware; and vice-president Karina Brown. The Milwaukee Chapter of the NBNA is one of 125 local chapters that comprise their national body. The NBNA was organized in 1971 as a non-profit organization and represents approximately 200,000 African American nurses from the USA, Canada, Eastern Caribbean, and Africa.

After seven years of planning, the development team behind a new Martin Luther King Library branch and connected apartment complex is gearing up for a spring groundbreaking.

“This project has been a long time coming,” said Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) construction manager Sam McGovern-Rowen to the City Plan Commission on Monday, January 23, 2023. “We are just thrilled to finally be here.”

The new library will be built at the corner of N. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. and W. Locust St. and continue the city’s successful model of replacing stand-alone libraries with new facilities located on the first floor of larger, tax-paying buildings.

It will occupy approximately 18,000 square feet at the base of a four-story apartment building developed by Emem Group and General Capital Group. The 93-apartment proposal also includes the partial demolition and redevelopment of the Garfield Theatre to the north and the construction of a second new apartment building at the far northern end of the block.

The current library opened in 1971 and is part of a generation of one-story libraries whose mechanical systems are failing and whose designs can’t accommodate the varied uses of modern libraries.

“These projects are like the town hall of each neighbor-

hood, they’re the civic center, the community rooms, the flexible spaces are really gathering places,” said McGovern-Rowen. He said people often come to use the facilities just for internet access. Books are still present, but just one of several amenities.

“We anticipate some sort of makerspace possibly, like we have on Mitchell Street,” said McGovern-Rowen of another of the redeveloped libraries. “The new spaces are all about having a flexible community center.”

He said the design would intentionally accommodate the high number of children and teenagers that use the current library. The city hired Moody Nolan to design the library’s interior, which it will own as a condominium. JLA Architects is designing the rest of the complex.

MPL initially put the project out for bid in 2016, selecting developer Lavelle Young in December of that year. But Young, working with a number of different partners, could never secure financing.

General Capital Group and then Michael Emem‘s quickly-growing Emem Group were brought on in 2019 and 2020 to replace Young. The new partners secured low-income housing tax credits in spring 2021 to finance much of the project in exchange for setting apartments aside at below-market rates for households making between 30 percent and 80 percent of the area’s median income.

But inflation delayed the project and several other tax-credit-supported developments. The city and state have moved to close financing gaps via a variety of funding sources, including tax incremental financing (TIF), each entity’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation and the city’s Housing Trust Fund.

According to the TIF district documentation, the project’s financing package relies on $18.1 million in housing tax credits, $6.4 million in mortgage financing, $5.5 million from the library, $3 million from the state’s ARPA grant, $1.5 million from the city’s ARPA-backed Housing Trust Fund, $940,000 in TIF support, a $775,000 grant from Bader Philanthropies, $666,300 from a deferred developer fee and approximately $270,000 in other grants and loans.

“We have taken our time to get here and we are very excited about the prospect of finally moving forward,” said McGovern-Rowen.

The plan commission voted unanimously to approve

selling three properties to the development team for $1 each. That includes the current library, as well as two vacant lots at the north end. A certified survey map to combine all of the public and private parcels was approved by the Common Council last week. The design was previously approved.

The Garfield Theatre building, 2933-2957 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., would be redeveloped. The two-story commercial building and lobby structure that faces the street would be redeveloped while the theater structure, located along the alley at the rear of the site, would be demolished and used for surface parking.

The remaining building would become nine live-work, two-story apartments. Tenants could have street-fronting retail space, while maintaining a private entrance in the back.

“We are really restoring the true gem of the Garfield Theatre, the portion that is architecturally significant,” said Emem in September 2021 to the Bronzeville Advisory Committee. The exterior facade, including the marquee, would see new life. The 1,800-seat theater opened in 1927 just a few months after

the similarly-designed Oriental Theatre. The auditorium space itself is in “rough shape,” said the developer. He said restoration costs would be in the millions and a new use would still need to be found. All of the seating has been removed, water damage from a roof leak is evident and the acoustical plaster is in disrepair. Emem said the theater hasn’t been used for films for more than three decades (Cinema Treasures puts the date at 1965), but the Greater Philadelphia Church of God in Christ uses the space for church services.

The Public Library Board of Trustees rejected an earlier plan from a different development group to repurpose the entire building because the per-square-foot cost was too high.

The northern apartment building would have 43 apartments. The southern building would have 41 apartments. A 2021 plan calls for a mix of one-bedroom (38), two-bedroom (22) and three-bedroom (33) layouts.

The plan commission unanimously endorsed the land sale. “I just really like the premise,” said commissioner Catrina Crane of the housing-library integration. The development would be the fifth such pairing.

The Common Council still needs to approve the land sales.

A temporary library, funded in the 2023 budget after substantial debate, is to be opened while the new facility is built. A raze permit is pending to demolish the current structure.

It has been more than 500 years since Black people hit the shores of what is now called the USA. During these years black people have been exploited, humiliated and killed. All of this adversity has been placed upon the necks of black people. Lo and behold, in 2023 black people are still surviving in the USA. The question is, “How are black people still surviving in the USA?”

The modern day African American is an derivative of black people. The persecution African Americans have faced from whites is unheard of in the annals of history. Yet, to the chagrin of many non-melanated people, African Americans are still living and breathing. How can this be with the different forms of genocide white society has implemented over the years? More importantly, why are African Americans still living after such persecution? The latter question is one that African Americans need to figure out.

I won’t go back to the days

How are you still here?

load of poppy? Where would this black person process the poppy into opium and eventually heroin? Keep in mind this is the USA. During this time frame black people couldn’t ride in the front of a bus in the South. The North was just as racist, except differing tactics were used. It is clear the heroin that flooded areas of African American communities was shipped in by tools of the white system.

African Americans still survived the heroin blitz. Why?

a few tons of cocaine? African Americans took the Mike Tyson uppercut thrown by white society. A few decades later and African Americans are still living in the USA.

of slavery as an example of the extreme measures white people have taken to exploit and humiliate African Americans. Let’s start in the 20th century. Let’s talk about the influx of drugs in the African American community. We’ll start off with the deadliest drug of all, heroin.

If you watch, The Godfather, there is a scene where

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

the mob bosses decide to traffic drugs. It was decided in this scene to traffic the drugs to the colored people. Many will say that this is a movie. Yet, when you look at the drugs that hit African American areas in the past 75 years the scene makes sense. How could a black person in the 1940’s or 50’s hop on a plane to Asia and pick up a

Fast forward to the early 1980’s. African American were shaking off the effects of the heroin and powder cocaine assault that white society forced on them. The system of oppression then hit the African American community with another potential knock-out blow. Crack cocaine hit the streets in all major areas where African Americans resided. Crack cocaine was a lethal blow that tortured an entire generation of African Americans. The shattering of families via drug use and prison terms set African Americans back 100 years. Crack selling in the inner city was glorified and created a basis for the self-genocidal music genre, Gangster Rap. There was the same question again. How did the cocaine get into the African American community? What African American person had a fleet of jet planes to swoop down to Columbia or Bolivia to pick up

Why are African Americans still living and breathing in the USA after such genocidal tactics? We didn’t even mention the self-hate enabling educational system, the blatant racism that permeated the African American psyche to the point where they destroy themselves. The medical field gets rich off African American obesity and high blood pressure. How can a race of people who have everything in the USA against them still survive? Better yet, what are these people who can survive such blatant assassination attempts? I know, but I won’t say it. The answer to these questions are ones that each individual African American must answer. Time is running out. African Americans need to find the answer fast.

God willing, Milwaukee resident James Brown will celebrate his 95th birthday on January 28th

On the day he was born in 1928, American aviator Charles Lindbergh successfully completed a solo flight across the Andes Mountain range in South America. This was less than a year after he changed the course of history by successfully completing a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York City to Paris, France, without refueling.

Milwaukee's James Brown (not to be confused with the more famous entertainer who died in 2006), is not one to sit around and count the years. Last summer Brown, a long-time aviator himself, successfully co-piloted a private airplane and even assumed control of the cockpit controls during the flight around Racine.

There is no maximum age for obtaining a private pilot license, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, but in order to be certified, the applicant must successfully pass a rigorous medical examination and be recertified every two years.

Brown said he has no plans to become recertified as a private pilot, (a certification he held for more than 20 years), but added it was thrilling fun for him once again to sit in a cockpit, go through the preflight checklist with the pilot and sit back while the plane climbed into the clouds. Brown said he continues to maintain his motor vehicle

license from the DMV. Given his long and active life, perhaps it is not surprising that this is not his first brush with history. After the

outbreak of the Korean War in 1952, Brown was drafted into the Army, becoming part of the first class of African American recruits to be integrated into U.S. Armed Forces. Brown said he performed very capably during basic training and wound up being assigned to a 4-person combat tank crew in the 3rd Armored Division, one of the most famous and highly decorated units in U.S. military history.

Brown said that despite the fact that he was the only African American aboard the troop ship that brought him and hundreds of other new recruits to Europe to help police the

Berlin Wall, he was not lonely and did not suffer from any prejudice.

“The word got around the ship that I had completed the same training they had,” he said. “A couple of them told me that I had been ‘certified’ and that like them I was no longer afraid to die. Once you’ve been trained to expect the worst, you are no longer afraid of failing. At least that’s what the Army told me.”

Brown, who retired from the former Milwaukee-based auto manufacturer A.O. Smith after 30 years of service in 1981, has many other productive talents besides combat tank mechanic, pensioner and aviator. He is also an entrepreneur; he started his first business, a shoe shine operation when he was eight-years-old. He is also a life-long investor, who owns stocks and farmland in northern Wisconsin. Recently he purchased the former office building of The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper for his granddaughter’s business on a rent-to-buy contract from Lynda Jackson Conyers after she sold The Milwaukee Times and retired.

Brown is even a bit of a comedian. When asked if he ever got frustrated being confused with or teased about sharing a name with “the hardest working man in show business,” Brown said “Both Charles Lindbergh and 'the hardest working man in show business' are deceased,” he said. “I’m still going.”

January is “National Glaucoma Awareness Month”

Are you at risk for a leading cause of blindness

Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because the most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don't notice symptoms for years— until severe permanent damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, especially for blacks. In fact, black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk rate, and at least one in five age 75 and older has the disease. How can you protect yourself? The partners at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that has focused on caring for Milwaukee’s black community since 1985, advise that you schedule regular eye exams to check for glaucoma, strictly follow eye drop and laser treatment recommendations, and learn the following facts. How glaucoma affects vision

“The front of your eye is filled with a fluid that supplies nutrients and maintains the eye's shape. If the proper amount does not continually pump in and drain out, pressure builds up. Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve (the part

of the eye that carries visual information to the brain). If this pressure persists without being diagnosed and treated, it can cause permanent loss of side vision and eventually possibly all sight,” explained Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthalmology practice that cares for tens of thousands of glaucoma patients.

Risk factors

Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye surgeon who performs advanced laser and surgical procedures to alleviate glau-

in

black Americans?

• Other factors: Diabetes (doubles the risk of glaucoma), nearsightedness, steroid use, and previous eye injury.

Symptoms and detection

Raciti, MD, an eye surgeon who conducts continuing education lectures for fellow doctors and presentations for the general public.

coma-related eye pressure, lists the following risk factors for glaucoma:

• Age: Glaucoma is most common in adults over age 40, and the risk increases with age.

• Heredity: People with a sibling or parent who has glaucoma have a 5-10 times greater risk of developing the disease themselves and should be screened every 1-2 years.

• Ethnicity: A black person has a 6-8 times higher risk of going blind from glaucoma than a white person. Hispanics and Asians also have higher risk rates.

“Since glaucoma and other sight-threatening conditions are typically painless and can progress without symptoms for years, regular eye exams (every two years) are vital after age 40, especially if there is a family history of eye disease,” said Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. A comprehensive exam should include: Ophthalmoscopy (a look inside at the back of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma, like abnormal optic nerve size and loss of pink coloring), Tonometry (a check of inner eye pressure done either with a puff of air or by painlessly touching the eye), Visual Field Testing (to create a computerized “map” of the existing range of sight), Gonioscopy (use of a special lens to look at the drainage angle in the eye), and an OCT laser scan (a painless scan similar to a CT scan to diagnose, track and treat changes to the optic nerve and retina—often before damage occurs).

Dangers of having glaucoma

Glaucoma-related “tunneling” (loss) of side vision makes it difficult to climb stairs, stay in the proper driving lane, detect obstacles, etc. Glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of having a car accident by up to six times and triples the risk of falling.

Benefits of advanced laser and surgical treatment

“These advanced procedures are often highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for prescription eye drops. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” said Rhode. “Your eye care specialist can evaluate the need, candidacy and potential benefits of these or other options for your specific case.”

Detection + treatment = vision protection

“Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in for check-ups or follow recommended eye drop guidelines,” said David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society.

Medical treatment (with prescription eye drops)

Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage and vision loss. The most common type is a lifelong condition that requires continual management with prescription eye drops to lower pressure (by either decreasing fluid production or increasing outflow).

Advanced laser and surgical treatment

“In some cases, when drops alone cannot control pressure, side effects are intolerable, or multiple drops are required, we can offer other options. Advanced laser or new Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) procedures can often be used to increase fluid drainage or decrease fluid production. These procedures take just minutes to perform and are typically covered by Medicare and most insurance plans,” explained Michael

Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7520 ext. 217 for a free educational booklet and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening (usually covered by insurance or Medicare) at their offices on 7th & Wisconsin Avenue, Mayfair Road across from the mall, or 102nd & National Avenue. They also offer information at www.eyecarespecialists.net.

Simple rules to follow for glaucoma

1. Take drops and medications as directed. Do NOT use more or less than prescribed.

2. Keep all eye appointments and use your drops as normal on those days. If you don’t, your pressures may be affected and your doctor won’t be able to tell how you are doing.

3. Schedule your drops and medications around daily routines, such as bedtime and meals to help remember to use them.

4. If you forget to use your eye drops, administer a drop as soon as you remember. Then go back to your regular schedule.

Black mayors will lead four largest cities in America following historic midterm wins

For the first time in U.S. history, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston all will have black mayors, following Karen Bass' recent victory in the City of Angels

When Rep. Karen Bass takes office as the new mayor of Los Angeles next month, the country's four largest cities will all have black leaders.

The former state assemblywoman and current U.S. congresswoman, who narrowly defeated real estate mogul Rick Caruso in the city's mayoral election, will join a historic group that includes New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

"As black mayors continue to win elections this cycle, we are excited that, for the first time, the four largest cities — New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston — are each led by an African American mayor," the African American Mayors Association said in a statement Thursday, January 19, 2023, per CNN

Adams, a retired New York City Police Department captain, was sworn in earlier this year, while Lightfoot is running for reelection. Turner, who has been mayor of the largest city in Texas since 2016, is term-limited and will not be able to seek reelection in 2023.

"When you have the top four cities at the table, with the administration, I think that the conversation is definitely going to land where it needs to be," Phyllis Dickerson, CEO of the African American Mayors Association, told CNN

Black women are continuing to make strides attaining top civic posts across the country, with nine women set to serve as mayors of the nation's largest 100 cities, according to the Center for

American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

In addition to Lightfoot, Bass and Pamela Goynes-

Brown, who was elected mayor of North Las Vegas, the female mayors include Vi Alexander Lyles in Charlotte, NC; London Breed in San

Francisco; Muriel Bowser in Washington, DC; LaToya Cantrell in New Orleans; Tishaura Jones in St. Louis, MOi; and Elaine O'Neal in Durham, NC.

As Bass is set to take office, her wide-ranging goals for the city include making it more affordable for working families, and working to "solve homelessness" and "prevent and respond urgently to crime," according to the Los Angeles Times

The latter issue personally affected Bass when her Baldwin Vista home was burglarized earlier this fall. Two guns she had for protection were stolen from a lockbox in September, per the Times.

Two men were later charged with felonies in connection to the crime.
