Milwaukee Brewers host annual 'Brewers on Deck' fan fest event

On Sunday, January 27, 2019, the Milwaukee Brewers hosted their annual "Brewers on Deck" at the Wisconsin Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. "Brewers on Deck" is the winter fan fest that bridges the gap between the end of the season and spring training. The event features a number of activities for the entire family including: autographs and photos with Brewers players, coaches and alumni; interactive games; Q&A sessions; a game show; pitching and batting coaching sessions for the kids; and plenty of vendor booths with Brewers memorabilia for sale. There was also an opportunity to have breakfast with the Brewers. This year the event sold out quickly, with proceeds from the sales going to the Brewers Community Foundation. Pictured at the event are (right photo) Jeremy Jeffress, who was given a special plaque commemorating his participation in the 2018 All Stars Game by friend and Milwaukee Times photographer Yvonne Kemp.

'Black Panther' makes SAG Awards history with Best Ensemble win

The cast of 'Black Panther' at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Ryan Coogler's groundbreaking Hollywood superhero film Black Panther made history Sunday night, Janaury 27, 2019, by winning the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Not only is the Disney and Marvel Studios tentpole the first superhero picture ever to be awarded best ensemble; it's the biggest-grossing film to walk away with the guild's top honor. Black Panther is likewise the first superhero title to secure a nomination for the Oscar for best picture. The movie amassed $1.35 billion in global ticket sales following its release in theaters in February 2018. That eclipses the $1.12 billion earned by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which won the SAG Award for best ensemble in 2004, not adjusted for inflation. The first SAG Award for

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Black History Month: Joining the fight for social justice (Week 1) "Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

today are acting out of their convictions from Scripture and their experience of God’s grace and power to work for equality and justice for all regardless of race by promoting Christian involvement in crucial social issues.

Churches have long since acknowledged their role as being social activists as recognized in Scripture, which calls every believer to defend and uphold the dignity and wellbeing of all persons, especially the poor and the powerless. Committed Christian pioneers such as John Wesley helped to shape the social justice tradition by leading prison reform and abolitionism movements in the 18th Century in England. Within our generation, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement, Mother Theresa of Calcutta and other people of faith took brave stands against the evils of injustice. Believers

Beloved, more and more churches are answering the call to become more socially conscious resulting in social justice gaining considerable traction among churches and pushing issues of injustice and oppression into the national conversation. Yet, many believers still shy away from becoming involved in social justice, especially when it involves controversial but crucial issues. The reason may very well be because social justice calls us to action and awareness and will take us out of our comfort zones.

The bottom line is there is simply no way to preach and teach Jesus and not care about justice. Jesus announced the purpose of His ministry in Luke 4:18 as being primarily focused on the poor, the captive, the blind and the oppressed. Jesus was a social revolutionary and thus churches best represent the mission of Jesus when they are theologically conscious but also socially aware. By that I mean, churches can join in the mission of Jesus when they engage their world with the redemptive message of God’s love by

proclaiming the gospel; but also, when they confront injustice and touch human needs. Every believer should sense a God-given desire to serve the hurting, restore the broken and minister to the marginalized with the tools and opportunities God has placed at their disposal.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM, MATC and MPS leaders share M3 collaboration’s impact Two years ago, leaders from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Area Technical College publicly announced a groundbreaking educational effort called M3 (pronounced M-cubed). It’s an unprecedented collaboration among Milwaukee’s three largest public education institutions to create a better K-through-16 educational system, one that will feed the region’s growing need for college-educated employees. In January, M3 leaders hosted an event highlighting the impact the initiative has had so far. UWM Chancellor Mark Mone, MPS Superintendent Keith Posley and MATC President Vicki Martin shared how M³ has helped increase the MPS graduation rate and the percentage of MPS grads going on to college. They also committed to accelerating the progress and to moving the needle in one area that has not yet seen growth: the one-year retention percentage for MPS graduates who attend either MATC or UWM. More than 130,000 students are collectively served by MPS, MATC and UWM. Through M³, educators

MPS Superintendent Keith Posley (left), MATC President Vicki Martin (center) and UWM Chancellor Mark Mone shared the impact of M3 in its first two years. work in teams to smooth transitions between the institutions and implement programs that benefit the entire student population. Curricula and instructional approaches in math, science and reading are being aligned throughout the three institutions. Research and resources are being shared, with an eye toward accelerating student progress from middle school to high school and on into college. Additional M³ efforts include combined professional development sessions for

MPS, MATC and UWM faculty members. Trips to UWM and MATC campuses connect MPS students with educational avenues aligned with their career interests. Job fairs have introduced students to employers, and Parent Institute programs ensure parents have the tools to navigate their children’s path to college. At the impact update, held at MATC’s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, M³ leaders shared the early results with legislators, businesspeople, families, faculty and staff.

“Education is power,” Posley said. “This is transformational work.” Success is being tracked through key metrics. That includes the MPS four-year graduation rate, which rose from 58.2 percent for the class of 2015 to 62.2 percent for the class of 2017. Final 2018 numbers are expected to rise another few percentage points. M³ has also helped increase the percentage of MPS graduates entering college within one year from 44.2 percent for the class of 2015 to 46.2 percent for the class of 2017. The initiative helped boost the percentage of MPS students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from 60.8 percent in 2016 to 74.6 percent by 2018. Higher targets for all figures have been established for 2019-20, and leaders outlined specific steps to help more MPS students succeed when they enter college. Sixty-five percent of MPS students continue after one year at UWM and 44 percent continue after one year at MATC. “We will not rest,” Martin said, “until our students are successful at the level they

deserve and our community needs.” Two UWM students spoke about the impact M³ has already made on their lives. First-year student Mawah Kromah, who plans to major in education, talked about the support she received at her MPS high school — James Madison Academic Campus — and the summer bridge program that helped her graduate from high school and enter college. Pilar Olvera, a senior in sociology and urban studies at UWM, said that campus organizations such as the Roberto Hernandez Center, which is dedicated to serving Latino and Latina students, contributed to her academic success and set her on a path to graduation. “UWM helped me every step of the way,” Olvera said. Mone said that working in public education is a calling, and he emphasized “how important it is to transform lives and create opportunities for individuals.” M³ is playing an important role in those efforts. “I’m proud of the work we’ve achieved,” Mone said, “but we have much more work in front of us.”

Be a kid with your kid Sometimes life can get so busy that we miss out on important interactions with our family. Days move fast and nights fall short, often leaving a sense of asking where did the time go. Children grow up in our presence and we yearn for time lost when we realize that they are older and want more independence. Reality kicks in because you wonder how well do you know your child, their needs, their wants, and their desires. You think about the relationship or the lack of connection when they don’t show excitement to spend time with you like they do with their peer groups. Studies show that parent-child bonding starts at birth. How you interact, speak, and play with your kids are critical developmental factors for healthy bonding. As a mental health practitioner, I often ask parents when and how long they play with their kids. This question is not easy for parents to answer. It involves self-examination, reality checks and immediate plans of action. Think about it. We often say, enjoy being a kid while you can? Well, why not enjoy being a kid with your kid when you can? The interaction is unforgettable.

WING IT FOR GAME DAY

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen bringing your friends and family together to watch the game, you’ll likely want to avoid any fumbles in the kitchen. Fret not and opt for a big batch of easy-to-make wings while incorporating these stress-free tips into your game plan to help ensure a resounding success:

n

n

n

n

Delegate responsibilities. The best gatherings are a team sport. Tackle this recipe for Crispy Baked Wings and let your friends help with snacks, dips and drinks. Prep what you can the day before. Reduce the time needed to make these wings on game day by prepping some steps in advance. The seasoning blend and sauces can be prepped up to two days in advance and chicken wings can be separated into drums and flats the day before. Veggies are underrated. It’s usually a good plan to have a snack that can be easily replenished for grazers attending your party. Stock up on vegetables that are easy to slice such as carrots and celery. Place some of the cut vegetables out with dips like blue cheese dressing or ranch, both of which can double as classic pairings for your wings. Redefine “homemade.” The Crispy Baked Wings can serve as a versatile base for just about any sauce you might be craving. Instead of making a sauce entirely from scratch, consider making some quick alterations to premade ones. For example, add an ingredient like Tabasco Chipotle Sauce to store-bought barbecue sauce to impart a smoky flavor and lime juice for added brightness. Small changes can add that special, homemade quality without all the work. Recipes like Chipotle Barbecue Sauce or Nashville-Style Sauce can complement wings for true crowd-pleasers – pick your favorite or try both.

Crispy Baked Wings with Chipotle Barbecue Sauce or Nashville-Style Sauce Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Servings: 4-6

Wings: 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 4 1/2 pounds chicken wings, drums and flats separated, tips removed

Chipotle Barbecue Sauce: 1 cup barbecue sauce 3 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice Nashville-Style Sauce: 6 tablespoons Tabasco Sauce 8 tablespoons butter, softened 1 tablespoon light brown sugar 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt

Heat oven to 425 F. In bowl, combine baking powder, salt, paprika and black pepper. Shake over both sides of wings. Place seasoned wings on rack over foil-lined sheet pan. Bake 20 minutes, turn wings over and continue cooking additional 20 minutes in convection oven or 30 minutes in conventional oven. Cooked wings should reach at least 180 F internal temperature with crispy texture. To make Chipotle Barbecue Sauce: In bowl, mix barbecue sauce, Tabasco Chipotle Sauce and lime juice. Alternatively, to make Nashville-Style Wing Sauce: In bowl, mix Tabasco Sauce, butter, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder and salt. Set aside. Remove wings from oven. Toss wings with preferred sauce and serve.
