Brewers host Annual Brewers on Deck 2017
On Sunday, January 29, 2017 it was just the fans and the Crew – hanging out, swapping stories, playing games, and most likely, becoming best friends, as the Brewers hosted their annual winter fan fest "Brewers On Deck." The event gives fans a fix of Brewers baseball in January by spending the day with all of your favorite players, coaches, alumni, front office personnel and broadcasters. Brewers On Deck was once again held at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee and featured a number of unique opportunities to get up close and personal with the Crew. Pictured at the fan fest is former Milwaukee Brewer and Manager of Youth Outreach Larry Hisle, who coached young fans on proper baseball techniques and what it takes to be a pro-ball player.

By: Marian Wright Edelman President of the Children's Defense Fund
Leslie Dunbar: An indispensable one
When foundation and civil rights and antipoverty leader and supporter Leslie Dunbar died January 4, 2017 at age 95, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) and many civil rights and public interest organizations that have worked over the decades to prevent voter suppression, hunger and poverty lost a strategic, thoughtful, long-term friend. Leslie was one of the most creative, engaged, informed and courageous foundation leaders during a major inflection time in our nation. He was an indispensable ally as the Civil Rights Movement struggled to close the huge gap between racial creed and deed and as hunger and poverty bubbled up to national consciousness with the War on Poverty and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign. As a White child growing up in Depression-era West Virginia, Leslie would have seemed an unlikely candidate for the key role he played over many decades to ensure justice for poor and nonWhite citizens. While serving as director of the Southern Regional Council, an Atlanta civic and business association, Leslie worked with Dr. King and other leaders during what he called “a time of mind-changing in the South.” He was a regular fixture following the 1964 Freedom Summer. As head of the Field Foundation from 1965-1980, Leslie left an enduring positive impact saving lives and strengthening institutions, many of which still exist – including CDF as we evolved from our parent organization the Washington Research Project in 1973. Many
of the young organizations Field helped seed and fund in a sustained way during this burgeoning movement building period to end hunger and poverty still exist and have endured over more than four decades thanks to the strong and long term foundation support the Field Foundation provided. The Children’s Defense Fund and I are direct beneficiaries of Leslie’s wisdom and long term support. After meeting him in Mississippi as a young attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, I moved to Washington to serve as counsel and federal policy liaison for Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign which Field helped support. Widespread hunger and poverty were sapping the spirits and bodies of tens of thousands of poor Black Mississippians. I decided to move to the nation’s capital after repeated brutal battles with Mississippi’s Jim Crow congressional delegation over efforts to kill the transformative Head Start program after the State of Mississippi turned down the desperately needed Head Start funds, as so many callous states today have turned down Medicaid coverage for their needy uninsured citizens. When a coalition of community groups, the Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM), applied for and won the federal Head Start money the state declined to use, we had huge refunding battles which Leslie helped us through. And after the Department of Agriculture continued dragging its feet on getting food to starving children and families who were brought
Leslie Dunbar
to national light by Senator Robert Kennedy’s visit to the Mississippi Delta, Leslie and the Field Foundation funded doctors to visit and document severe hunger and malnutrition among Mississippi’s Black children. Not knowing how I would support myself in Washington, and with no office to go to, I left Mississippi with one check from the Field Foundation in my hand to open up what became the first independent non-government funded public interest law office seeking to provide a voice for poor and nonWhite citizens in the federal policy arena. That grant enabled me to rent a small office and hire a skeletal staff for the Washington Research Project to support the Poor People’s Campaign. The Washington Research Project began in 1968. With Field Foundation anchor support joined later by other funders, we were able to play a strong leadership role over the next years documenting the misuse of federal Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act funds and suing major Southern employers who discriminat-
ed against Black citizens. We also followed up on key anti-hunger demands of Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign for which we served as federal policy liaison. It became clear in the post King-Kennedy era that poor adults faced a shrinking constituency and that focusing on children to help prevent adult poverty was a sound strategy, so the Children’s Defense Fund was born in 1973. The needs of children out of school, without homes, and without health care were carefully documented and followed up on with Leslie’s support. These reports provided the groundwork for ongoing advocacy to assure millions of children access to health care, nutrition, Head Start, child care, a right to education if disabled, escape from adult jails in many states, and protections for children in foster care and in need of mental health supports. The first juvenile justice arm of the Children’s Defense Fund was headed by Judge Justine Wise Polier, a great retired juvenile court judge in New York City and was lodged in the Field Foundation’s offices in New York City. Under her leadership CDF prepared groundbreaking reports including Children in Adult Jails – after her staff visited 500 jails across America and found children in adult jails everywhere; Children Without Homes; Children of Women Prisoners; and Unclaimed Children, about the unmet mental health needs of children. All came from that era of strong Field Foundation support under Leslie’s leadership. As a wise and farsighted philanthropic leader, Leslie
was willing to invest in institutions and people who demonstrated effectiveness and outcomes from the bottom up and not from the top down. The Field Foundation stuck with a network of public interest advocates over many decades to ensure continuity of impact. How I hope many more foundation leaders like Leslie will emerge going forward. His long term investment in antipoverty and human rights groups are all living testaments to his foresight and leadership. Words cannot convey the debt of gratitude I and so many others owe him for his wisdom and commitment to racial and economic justice, and for seeding sound leaders who carry on today and are training the servant leaders of tomorrow for the next transforming movement we must and will have to end poverty beginning with our children. The German playwright Bertolt Brecht wrote: “There are those who struggle for a day and they are good. There are those who struggle for a year and they are better. There are those who struggle all their lives. These are the indispensable ones.” Leslie Dunbar was truly one of the indispensable ones over the long span of his useful life in building a more just America. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Ignorance is not bliss: The importance of sound biblical doctrine to God’s people (Part 5) “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.” - (Titus 2:1)
This entire month we have been stressing the exigency of believers to undertake the study of biblical doctrine. Why? God often exhorts His people to have a good deal of biblical know-how. In our conclusion, this writer will outline two blessed benefits to the study of doctrinal truths. Spiritual growth. Studying doctrinal truths rightly will make us more mature Christians. In fact, the Bible often connects sound doctrine with maturity in Christian living. (2 Tim. 6:3-5 and Titus 1:1.) The study of scripture and doctrine will help one to make learned and well-informed decisions. We cannot know what new controversies will be raised in the churches in years to come. New doctrinal controversies will sometimes include questions that no one has faced very carefully before. Whatever the new doctrinal debates are in fu-
for God’s people to give more impetus to studying God’s Word. When Christians study, they will find that understanding and living the doctrines of Scripture will be one of their greatest joys. But I caution, knowledge alone can be precarious if it is not mixed with love and grace and when it remains theoretical and not functional.
ture years, those who have learned theology well will be much better able to respond to the new questions that arise. (Grudem, Systematic Theology, pp. 32-37). Justo Gonzalez, author of “Story of Christianity,” expounds on the necessity of studying quite well. He notes: The sacred text of Scripture has more than one meaning. The literal sense ought not to be set aside but those who are content with it are like children who are content with milk and never grow in adulthood. Beyond
the literal sense of the text there are other meanings that the truly wise must discover. (Gonzalez, Story of Christianity, p. 73.) Beloved, there is an urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the church. This writer readily concedes that biblical doctrine is not easy to understand, but a Christian must study it and must never use ignorance as an excuse. Why? Just the threat of false teachers, who are on the rise infecting the church with doctrinal error, should be reason enough
Regretfully, this writer simply does not have space to explore and give proper treatment to the importance of biblical doctrine. This writer encourages you to take advantage of the teaching opportunities available through your local church which will be tremendously advantageous to you as you grow and mature in God’s Word.
Word! Next Month: “Don’t Make Me Angry. You Wouldn’t Like Me When I’m Angry”: Controlling the Beast Within The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in this article, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. This information is for educational purposes only. If you would like to contact Rev. Lester, write to her c/o P.O. Box 121, Brookfield, WI. 53008
In the meantime, it is this writer’s sincere prayer that as you study, pray and meditate, that you will draw strength from the Word of God that will help you gain understanding of biblical doctrines and go forth preaching, teaching and living God’s

Perhaps you sent a lovely card or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece, if so, we saw it there Perhaps you spoke the kindest words that any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all; just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much whatever the part.

Milwaukee Marshall High School receives $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant
Riverside drumline comes out on top at Chicago competition
More than 1.8 million votes were cast by 72,000 people in an effort to bring a $25,000 grant to their neighborhoods. State Farm is proud to announce the Top 40 vote-getting causes that will receive the grants to improve their communities. State Farm Neighborhood Assist is a crowd-sourced philanthropic program that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhoods. The affiliated nonprofits of the top 40 causes will each receive a $25,000 grant to create and execute a plan to address the cause. The top 40 causes represented 25 states from around the country. Milwaukee Public Schools will use funds from this grant to create an engineering makerspace at Milwaukee Marshall High School. The makerspace, outfitted with new 3D printers and scanners, will allow students to connect and promote science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) education to the greater school and local community. “We’re thrilled State Farm recognized the opportunity and potential of our Makerspace project at Milwaukee Marshall High School to expose young people to expe-

Director Michael Van Pelt revealed the hard work that goes into preparing for competition. “The students have to work together, tightly, responding to each other and the music and the movement. But when asked does she miss it, the network channel owner said, “I never wanted to be the person for whom people were saying, ‘Oh that show was so good two years ago.’ I never wanted to be the person who [was told], ‘You should’ve gotten out of the ring before you got punched stronger',” Winfrey shared. “I never wanted to be the person who didn’t know when to exit the party. “It was the most glorious, most amazing platform anybody can have to speak to millions of people every day and I think I exited in the exact right moment,” she continued. “So now, I get to tell stories in a different way.” And that, too, has proven to be a success, with the OWN network at at all-time high of viewership with a plethora of original programming including Greenleaf and the newest show, Queen Sugar. Now, just about on every red carpet, the billionairre gets asked, “How did you do it?” and “What’s the secret to success?” So here we’ve compiled 12 of the beautiful Ms. Winfrey’s top secrets to a healthier, more rewarding life: 1. “Turn your wounds into wisdom.” Turn your mess into a message. Don’t let your pain be in vain. Do something positive with it. 2. “You can have it all. Just not all at once.” Be patient. Have an order. Prioritize. Focus on what you
want, now. Plan for what you want later. 3.“If a man wants you, nothing can keep him away. If he doesn’t want you, nothing can make him stay.” All you can do is be yourself, that is the only thing you can control. Focus on that. 4. “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.” You know you reached a high level of integrity when you don’t even care if people know or not. You just do it. 5. “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” Never become too busy or too preoccupied to celebrate everything you have done, all that you have and all that you are. 6. “One of the hardest things in life to learn are which bridges to cross and which bridges to burn.” You can’t keep all of them. You can’t make everyone happy.

7. “You don’t become what you want, you become what you believe.” There is nothing more influential than your thoughts. 8. “When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are.” Love yourself and all the world will love you too. 9. “Only make decisions that support your self-image, self-esteem, and self worth.” Become extremely intentional with everything that you do. Be fully on purpose. Make sure everything you do supports who you are and who you want to be. 10. “Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different.” Stress comes from thinking that things
should have been different. But they have worked out this way for a reason. ALL you can do is keep moving forward. 11. “So go ahead. Fall down. The world looks different from the ground.” Everything that we go through gives us new perspective, information and insight. Embrace all of it. 12. “I don’t believe in failure. It’s not failure if you enjoy the process.” There is no failure, only feedback. Everything is either what you want, or what you don’t want. But failure is not real. And if you need a little bit more encouragement, Here is a 3-step game plan from Ms. O. 1. Find a stress-management tool. It can be yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, prayer, etc. Find a ritual that’s right for you to help combat stress, because you WILL have stress. It’s not something to run from,
stress IS life. Which is why growing in life involves coping with stress in a healthy way. 2. Devise a physical fitness routine. Ideally, one that you can handle and be consistent with. Talk with a trainer or your doctor to come up with a plan that will help you succeed in both your physical fitness and healthy life goals. Also, remember that consistency is the key. If you visit places where people live a long time – Costa Rica, Sardinia, places in China, Okinawa in Japan – they all follow consistent fitness routines. 3. Have faith in a power other than yourself. The wisest and most successful people on this Earth didn’t achieve what they have alone. Instead, they embraced a strong network of others who helped support and challenge them to do their best. This means everything from making yourself more spiritually healthy to picking up the phone to talk to friends and family. There’s loving support all around you – whether you realize it or not.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson By: Geoffrey C. Ward Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, Aug 4, 2010 Biography & Autobiography 544 pages In this vivid biography Geoffrey C. Ward brings back to life the most celebrated — and the most reviled — African American of his age. Jack Johnson battled his way out of obscurity and poverty in the Jim Crow South to win the title of heavyweight champion of the world. At a time when whites ran everything in America, he took orders from no one and resolved to live as if color did not exist. While most blacks struggled simply to exist, he reveled in his riches and his fame, sleeping with whomever he pleased, to the consternation and anger of much of white America. Because he did so the federal government set out to destroy him, and he was forced to endure prison and seven years of exile. This definitive biography portrays Jack Johnson as he really was--a battler against the bigotry of his era and the embodiment of American individualism.
Nat King Cole By: Daniel Mark Epstein G.K. Hall, 2000 Biography & Autobiography 704 pages Written with the narrative pacing of a novel, this absorbing biography traces Nat King Cole's rise to fame, from boy-wonder jazz genius to megastar in a racist society -- the first African-American to have his own television show. Daniel Mark Epstein brings Cole and his times to vivid life, examining Cole's insistence on changing society through his art rather than political activism, and the famous and influential image of calm, poise, and elegance which concealed the personal turmoil that eventually undermined his health.
was often called, became a pioneering star for African Americans in the 1940s and '50s. Now James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, draws on a wealth of unmined material and hundreds of interviews -- one of them with Horne herself -- to give us the defining portrait of an American icon. Gavin has gotten closer than any other writer to the celebrity who has lived in seclusion since 1998. Incorporating insights from the likes of Ruby Dee, Tony Bennett, Diahann Carroll, Arthur Laurents, and several of Horne's fellow chorines from Harlem's Cotton Club, Stormy Weather offers a fascinating portrait of a complex, even tragic Horne -- a stunning talent who inspired such giants of showbiz as Barbra Streisand, Eartha Kitt, and Aretha Franklin, but whose frustrations with racism, and with tumultuous, root-less childhood, left wounds too deep to heal. The woman who emerged was as angry as she was luminous.
Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne By: James Gavin Simon and Schuster, 2009 Biography & Autobiography 608 pages At long last, the first serious biography of entertainment legend Lena Horne -- the celebrated star of film, stage, and music who became one of the first African American icons. At the 2001 Academy Awards, Halle Berry thanked Lena Horne for paving the way for her to become the first black recipient of a Best Actress Oscar. Though limited, mostly to guest singing appearances in splashy Hollywood musicals, "the beautiful Lena Horne," as she

From the Cotton Club's glory days and the back lots of Hollywood's biggest studios to the glitzy but bigoted hotels of Las Vegas's heyday, this behind-the-scenes look at an American icon is as much a story of the limits of the American dream as it is a masterful, ground-breaking biography.

America's Mistress: The Life and Times of Miss Eartha Kitt By: John L. Williams Quercus, Oct 7, 2014 Biography & Autobiography 336 pages Strait-laced, pre-civil rights America wasn't ready for Eartha Kitt. Waiting for others to be ready was never her style. In America's Mistress John L. Williams captures the person behind the myth in this engaging biography but also race relations in 20th-century America. From humble roots on a South Carolina cotton plantation, the multilingual, possibly multi-racial chanteuse emerged seemingly from nowhere to seduce the nation and redefine cosmopolitan glamour. Blending intellect, self-awareness and unprecedented sex appeal, she was a Technicolor presence in a black-and-white world. But the key to her allure was always her mystery, and her three not-entirely-consistent autobiographies raise more questions than they answer about who she really was--whether singing, danc-
ing, acting or drawing headlines for her romantic dalliances and political activism. Drawing on extensive original research and interviews with the people who knew her best, Williams delivers a comprehensive, compassionate and thought-provoking record of a life that defied stereotypes, shattered boundaries, yet seemed to fall short of its potential in the end. America's Mistress is ultimately a celebration of a remarkable American life that paved the way for black entertainers from Belafonte to Beyoncé. With objectivity and thoroughness, John L. Williams provides sought-after answers to tantalizing and elusive questions.

Stepin Fetchit: The Life and Times of Lincoln Perry By: Mel Watkins Pantheon Books, 2005 Biography & Autobiography 338 pages The first African American movie star, Lincoln Perry, a.k.a. Stepin Fetchit, is an iconic figure in the history of American popular culture. In the late 1920s and ’30s he was both renowned and reviled for his surrealistic portrayals of the era’s most popular comic stereotype— the lazy, shiftless Negro. After his breakthrough role in the 1929 film Hearts in Dixie, Perry was hailed as “the best actor that the talking pictures have produced” by the critic Robert Benchley. Having run away from his Key West, FL home in his early teens, Perry found success as a vaudevillian before making his way to California. The tall, lanky actor became the first millionaire black movie star when he appeared in a string of hit movies as the whiny, ever-perplexed, slow-talking comic sidekick. Perry was the highest paid and most popular black comedian in America during Hollywood’s Golden Age, but his ongoing battles with movie executives, his rowdy offscreen behavior, and his extravagant spending kept him in gossip-column headlines. Perry’s spendthrift ways and exorbitant lifestyle hastened his decline and, in 1947, having squandered or
given away his fortune, he was forced to declare bankruptcy. In 1964 Perry was discovered in the charity ward of Chicago’s Cook County Hospital; he later turned up in Muhammad Ali’s entourage. In 1972 he unsuccessfully sued CBS for defamation because of a television program that ridiculed the type of characters he had portrayed. But his achievements were eventually acknowledged. In 1976 the Hollywood chapter of the NAACP gave him its Special Image Award for having opened the door for many a succeeding African American film star, and in 1978 he was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. In Stepin Fetchit, Mel Watkins has given us the first definitive, full-scale biography of an entertainment legend.
