Dennis Edwards, former Temptations lead singer, dies at 74 Dennis Edwards, who became a lead singer of the Motown hitmakers the Temptations in 1968 as they embraced psychedelic funk and won Grammy Awards for the songs “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and “Cloud Nine,” died on February 1, 2018, in Chicago. He was 74. His death, in a hospital, was confirmed on February 2, by Rosiland Triche Roberts, one of his booking agents. She did not specify the cause. Edwards’s resonant, powerful voice, burnished from years singing gospel, was perfect for the driving soul music of the 1970s. “Marvin Gaye was a friend of mine, and he used to say, ‘Man, I wish I could sing like you, if I could have that growl in my voice’,” Edwards told The Tallahassee Democrat in 2013. “And I said, ‘Man, are you kidding me? I want to sing like you. Everybody wants to sing like you’.” Before joining the Temptations, Edwards sang with another Motown group, the Contours, best known for

their 1962 hit “Do You Love Me” (recorded before he joined them). The Contours opened for the Temptations in the late 1960s, and when the Temptations’ lead singer David Ruffin left the group in 1968, he was asked to take over. Ruffin told him personally that he was going to get the job, showing up at his house very early in the morning, Edwards said. “I thought he was kidding,” he said. But at his first show with the Temptations, and some later ones, he recalled, Ruffin showed up, leapt onstage and took the microphone from him to sing some of his older hits. In time he left Edwards alone. Edwards joined the Temptations just as the group, under the direction of producer and songwriter Norman Whitfield, was developing a grittier sound, one largely influenced by the psychedelic soul of Sly & the Family Stone and very different from their earlier songs, like “My Girl” and

Dennis Edwards “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” The other members of the group — Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Paul Williams — also sang lead, notably Kendricks. But Edwards was an essential part of the group’s new sound on songs like “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World Is Today)” and “Shakey Ground.” Shortly after Edwards joined the group, the Temptations won their first Grammy, for the propulsive,

upbeat “Cloud Nine” (1968); they won another for the funk anthem “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” (1971). That song, like two other Temptations hits from that period — “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Just My Imagination” (on which Kendricks sang lead) — reached No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart. The group received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2013. Edwards left the Temptations in 1977 to pursue a solo career but rejoined them some years later. In 1989, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, along with the five members from the Temptations’ mid-1960s heyday. Dennis Edwards was born to a preacher in Fairfield, AL., on Feb. 3, 1943, and grew up in Detroit. As a teenager he sang in a gospel group and studied music at the Detroit Conservatory of Music before signing with Motown in the late 1960s. After parting ways with

the Temptations, Edwards remained with Motown as a solo artist. In 1984 he had an R&B hit with “Don’t Look Any Further,” a duet with Siedah Garrett, which was later sampled for records featuring rappers like Rakim and Tupac Shakur. In the 1990s, he toured with a group billed as Dennis Edwards and the Temptations, which led to a legal battle with Otis Williams about the use of the Temptations name. He settled by touring as the Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards. Edwards’s marriage to Ruth Pointer, one of the Pointer Sisters, ended in divorce. His survivors include his wife, Brenda, with whom he lived in St. Louis; five daughters, Issa Pointer, Maya Peacock, Denise Edwards, Alison Turner and Erika Thomas; a son, Bernard Hubbard; and grandchildren.

Jeremy got it right Teachers need protection. This may sound alarming to people outside of education but the previous statement is true. The 2018 teacher in a classroom needs to be protected. The rise of physical assaults and threats to teachers has been on the upswing. It is time for the government to pass laws that will protect the people who educate the USA’s youth. Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) is one man who seems to understand the value of teachers. Thiesfeldt authored the Teacher Protection Act. This is a bill that would give teachers means to protect themselves and also foster a better learning environment. The bill would give teachers a wide range of ways to protect themselves. The bill is something that the entire USA educational system needs to adopt in some form or fashion. The main problem is many people in the USA are blind to the facts about the modern 2018 student. I have said before that a teacher in a 2018 classroom is a target. The teacher is a target for student abuse, both verbal and sometimes physical. The teacher is a target for parents who half-raised their child. The teacher becomes a target for administration when this same ignorant parent complains. Finally, the teacher becomes a target for the federal government when student achievement declines. How did the peo-

ple who are supposed to be the bringers of knowledge become the hunted? The usual suspects, various advocates for so-called student rights, of course attacked Thiesfeldt’s bill. Advocates of this ilk usually make a living similar to the lawyer who chases ambulances. The advocates claim to have student interest in mind, but in reality, if things were going great, would these advocates have a job? It is time for the USA to take a hard look at the educational system's clientele. Many, not all, students coming into these schools are not there to learn anything dealing with education. Let’s face it; many urban schools are a daycare system to babysit the child. I’m sure this is true in poverty-stricken rural areas, also. With this in mind do you think this unengaged student has the teacher or even the other students educational interest in mind? Thiesfeldt’s bill would change the power structure in the classroom overnight. It would enable teachers to clear the learning environment of distractions. With the removal of a potentially violent or disruptive child, student achievement would go up. One concern is parents worry about teachers targeting their child. This would not be a problem for those parents who have raised a student and not a violent/ disruptive child. Many disruptive children

An NCON Communications Publication

only behave in such fashion because of the lack of severe consequences. Thiesfeldt’s bill would change this. The so-called students' rights advocates rush to add in the special needs student. No one is talking about the autistic, functionally impaired or severely mentally challenged student. What is being discussed is the chronic violent offender. We are talking about the gang member who uses the school to recruit or sell drugs to students. Another element is the disrespectful student who verbally abuses teachers and creates havoc in the classroom. What sane person can defend these types of students? Can these students be rehabilitated? Probably, but that is not the focus of a public school. Thiesfeldt’s bill will force parents to raise their children with enough sense to participate in school. The benefits of the bill would create a safe, productive learning environment for all students. If people are going to make America great again, then it is going to have to start with the students. Protecting the teacher is one giant step towards greatness. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Challenges African Americans face in the 21st century: Week 2: Mass incarceration What is Mass Incarceration? Michelle Alexander, the author of The New Jim Crow, (The New Press) in an interview on Frontline* explained mass incarceration as: “a massive system of racial and social control. It is the process by which people are swept into the criminal justice system, branded criminals and felons, locked up for longer periods of time than most other countries in the world who incarcerate people who have been convicted of crimes, and then released into a permanent second-class status in which they are stripped of basic civil and human rights, like the right to vote, the right to serve on juries, and the right to be free of legal discrimination in employment, housing, access to public benefits.” Mass incarceration came about because of the tough-on-crime initiative dating back to the '80s and '90s. Now the number of the incarcerated has exploded. What’s alarming is the racial disparity in the criminal justice system. The Sentencing Project, which has worked for a fair

and effective U.S. criminal justice system for nearly 30 years, published this research in an article entitled: The Color of Justice: Racial and Ethnic Disparity in State Prisons (June 2016) stating: • African Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 5.1 times the imprisonment of whites. In five states (Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont and Wisconsin), the disparity is more than 10 to 1. • In twelve states, more than half of the prison population is black: Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois,

Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Maryland, whose prison population is 72 percent African American, tops the nation. • In eleven states, at least 1 in 20 adult black males are in prison. • In Oklahoma, the state with the highest overall black incarceration rate, 1 in 15 black males ages 18 and older is in prison. • Latinos are imprisoned at a rate that is 1.4 times the rate of whites. Hispanic/white ethnic disparities are partic-

ularly high in states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New York. Why should we care? Michelle Alexander, in that interview with Frontline, noted it’s because Americans have no idea of the scale and scope of mass incarceration. Unless one is directly impacted by the system, unless one has a loved one who’s behind bars, unless one has done time themselves, unless one has a family member who’s been branded a criminal and felon and can’t get work, can’t find housing, denied even food stamps to survive, unless the system directly touches you, it’s hard to even imagine that something of this scope and scale exist. * What can you do? Con-

tact your senator and let your voice be heard. Urge your senator to support sentencing reform by supporting Senate Bill S.1917 – Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017. *Frontline – Locked Up In America. April 2014. Music bridges differences when ‘Black Pearl Sings!’ By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times Sometimes, you’ve got to use what you’ve got to get just what you want. Combine that advice with the ability to make the most of opportunity and you have an underlying premise of Black Pearl Sings!, a two-act play by Frank Higgins staging at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Stackner Cabaret now through March 18, 2018. The play is set during the Great Depression and opens at a Texas prison farm. Susannah Mullally is an ethnomusicologist on assignment for the Library of Congress who is traveling to remote parts of the country to record folklore – in this case, the traditional music of rural Southern Black people. After a day of interviewing and recording several prisoners suggested to her by the warden, Susannah hears a different voice that intrigues her and asks to meet the person behind that voice. Alberta “Pearl” Johnson enters the warden’s office to be interviewed wearing prison stripes, shackles on her ankles, and carrying a ball and chain. Pearl’s initial encounter with Susannah is laced with the preconceived notions of two women from vastly different worlds. Susannah is an Ivy League liberal who has disowned her upper class family and everything they seem to stand for. She appears to have a comfort level with Black folks, if only from what she may have read in academic journals. Pearl assumes Susannah is there to save her soul, a favor Pearl expressly rejects. Pearl is the granddaughter of slaves, who has served 10 years in prison for killing a man for using his “manhood” inappropriately. She holds fast to memories of her family and to the hope of reuniting with her daughter again, if and when she gets out of prison. Susannah longs to discover a musical gem to boost her flagging career and make her mark in academia as the first female on the faculty of then all-male Harvard. Pearl simply wants to get paroled from prison so she can search for her daughter, whom she hasn’t heard from in years. The two women enter into an alliance of convenience to achieve their goals. Reluctant at first, Pearl quickly realizes that sharing some of her music could be the key to her freedom – if she can convince Susannah of her singular value. Susannah has connections in the governor’s office which, if skillfully applied, could secure Pearl’s parole and, in her mind, cinch that coveted appointment to Harvard. Susannah wins Pearl’s parole – on the condition that the ex-con is remanded to

old folks would call “mother wit.” DuPree’s stirringly soulful, full-throated, alto a cappella renditions of traditional African American spirituals and folk songs are almost a character in themselves. Her “lesson” to the straight-laced Susannah on the different effects that can be achieved in the song Little Sally Walker gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “body language.” Milwaukee Repertory Theater presents "Black Pearl Sings!" in the Stackner Cabaret from January 19 through March 18. Pictured (from left) are stars Colleen Madden and Lynette DuPree. Photo by Michael Brosilow. Susannah’s custody. The two women relocate to New York City and hit the bohemian cabaret and academic lecture circuit to showcase Pearl’s singing and storytelling talent. All the while, Pearl and Susannah continue to put out feelers to try and locate Pearl’s missing daughter.

Colleen Madden gives an appropriately stiff edge to her portrayal of Susannah. Despite her almost palpable thirst for becoming a woman taken seriously in a man’s world, Madden plays Susannah with a conscience and a sense of humanity. Her portrayal meets Pearl from a standpoint of respect rather than pure exploitation.

For a play largely based on the relationship of these two women, Black Pearl Sings! extends its reach through dialogue and nuance, as well as through the music. Lynette DuPree infuses Pearl with a The music allows these wry sense of humor, a downto-earth view of everyday two women and their stories reality, and a lot of what the to meet somewhere on com-

mon ground, without overpowering each other. Lighting director Aimee Hanyzewski and scenic designer Courtney O’Neill join forces to effectively transform the Stackner’s limited stage space from the somber, depressing prison warden’s office into the eclectic décor and mood of the New York City cabaret scene. Kudos to music director Abdul Hamid Royal, whose musical selections remind us all of the deep roots the music of simple folks occupy in the history of this country of immigrants, and in each of our own lives, regardless of our origins. “Black Pearl Sings!” continues with both matinee and evening performances through March 18, 2018. The link between certain cancers, diet and exercise

Many Americans are just coming around to the correlation that “food is medicine”, let alone, the #1 top recommendation of good nutrition and regular exercise is still left ignored. In speaking of stats, cancer sits at the #2 spot as the leading causes of death in the United States. Some still are up in the air about how important it is to incorporate a proper diet and exercise lifestyle. Well, we’ve gathered a complete list of the sometimes confusing, unobvious, and complicated relationships between diet, exercise and 13 specific cancers from the American Cancer Society: Bladder cancer Smoking is a major cause of bladder cancer, so one option for prevention is clear. There’s some evidence that you can also lower your risk by eating plenty of vegetables and drinking lots of fluids. Brain cancer As far as anyone can tell, diet and exercise don’t have any effect on your risk for brain cancer. Breast cancer There are never any guarantees when it comes to breast cancer, but you can lower your risk by drinking alcohol only in moderation (one drink a day for women), maintaining a healthy weight, and getting at least four hours of exercise each week. There’s some not-especially-strong evidence that

getting lots of fruits and vegetables will help, too. Colorectal cancer Not surprisingly, there’s a relatively strong link between your diet and your risk for colorectal cancer. Getting plenty of vegetables and fruit may lower the risk, while eating a lot of red meat may increase the risk. Calcium and vitamin D may help protect against colon cancer, so you want to get a good supply of those minerals. High levels of calcium may increase prostate cancer risk, though, so men may want to limit calcium intake to 1,500 mg per day. Research suggests that moderate, regular physical activity may lower the risk of colorectal cancer (especially colon cancer), and vigorous activity may be even better. Endometrial cancer Women who are overweight are at higher risk for endometrial cancer, partly because extra body fat

can disrupt hormone levels. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can lower a woman’s risk. Limiting alcohol to one drink a day could help, too. Kidney cancer For reasons that aren’t clear, overweight people are especially vulnerable to kidney cancer. The prevention message: Maintain a healthy weight, and you’re less likely to get this disease. Leukemias and lymphomas As with brain cancer, there’s no sign that these cancers of the blood have anything to do with a person's diet or exercise habits. Lung cancer Obviously, smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, and the best thing you can do to avoid the disease is stay away from tobacco in all of its forms. That said, people who get their full share of fruits and vegetables seem to have some extra protection

against the disease. There used to be hope that antioxidant supplements could prevent lung cancer, but that hope has faded. Large studies have found that, among smokers, high doses of vitamin A and beta-carotene supplements may actually slightly increase the risk of lung cancer. In short, it’s probably better to get your antioxidants the natural way: with fruits and vegetables. Oral and esophageal cancers Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of oral and esophageal cancers, especially if you’re also a smoker. People who are overweight or who skimp on fruits and vegetables also seem to be at risk. Having just one or two drinks a day, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating plenty of produce will improve your odds. Ovarian cancer It’s unclear if diet has any effect on the risk of ovarian cancer. But to play it safe, stick to the basics: Drink only in moderation and get lots of fruits and vegetables. Pancreatic cancer As the organ that makes insulin, the pancreas is greatly affected by levels of sugar in the blood. Being overweight and staying physically inactive can mess up your sugar metabolism, and it can also increase your risk for pancreatic cancer. Eating lots of red meats and processed meats seems to amplify the risk, but fruits and vegetables offer protection. Prostate cancer Large amounts of dairy products and red meat can

Health & Fitness

increase your risk of prostate cancer. On the plus side, there’s some hope that natural antioxidants (such as lycopene in tomatoes) may help lower the risk, but the jury is still out. The best bet: Lots of fruits, lots of vegetables. Stomach cancer No surprises here: At least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day seems to lower the risk of stomach cancer. For extra protection, go easy on foods that are loaded with salt or nitrates (including processed meat, such as hot dogs). Fitness and diet have been proven to lower your risk of cancer. However, not all cancers respond the same way to certain lifestyle changes. Take the time to seek balance in all of these connections to cancer, diet, and exercise. It may seem overwhelming but incorporating little changes will make the biggest impact in the end. It also helps to know that many of these steps that protect you from one cancer will give you high chances of protection from others as well. Sources: American Cancer Society. True Black history: The unknown stories of how Black men and women helped shape America cy with the recipes that they created and passed down to future generations. Black Fortunes: The Story of the First Six African Americans Who Escaped Slavery and Became Millionaires By: Shomari Wills HarperCollins, Jan. 30, 2018 History 320 pages The astonishing untold history of America’s first black millionaires—former slaves who endured incredible challenges to amass and maintain their wealth for a century, from the Jacksonian period to the Roaring Twenties— self-made entrepreneurs whose unknown success mirrored that of American business heroes such as Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, and Thomas Edison. While Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Michael Jordan, and Will Smith are among the estimated 35,000 black millionaires in the nation today, these famous celebrities were not the first blacks to reach the storied one percent. Between the years of 1830 and 1927, as

the last generation of blacks born into slavery was reaching maturity, a small group of smart, tenacious, and daring men and women broke new ground to attain the highest levels of financial success. Black Fortunes is an intriguing look at these remarkable individuals, including Napoleon Bonaparte Drew—author Shomari Wills’ greatgreat-great-grandfather—the first black man in Powhatan County (contemporary Richmond) to own property in post-Civil War Virginia. His achievements were matched by five other unknown black entrepreneurs including: • Mary Ellen Pleasant, who

used her Gold Rush wealth to further the cause of abolitionist John Brown; • Robert Reed Church, who became the largest landowner in Tennessee; • Hannah Elias, the mistress of a New York City millionaire, who used the land her lover gave her to build an empire in Harlem; • Orphan and self-taught chemist Annie Turnbo-Malone, who developed the first national brand of hair care products; • Madam C. J. Walker, Turnbo-Malone’s employee who would earn the nickname America’s "first female black millionaire;" • Mississippi school teacher O. W. Gurley, who developed a piece of Tulsa, Oklahoma, into a "town" for wealthy black professionals and craftsmen that would become known as "the Black Wall Street." A fresh, little-known chapter in the nation’s story—A blend of Hidden Figures, Titan, and The Tycoons—Black Fortunes illuminates the birth of the black business titan and the emergence of the black marketplace in America as never before.
