The Gathering and Capuchin Mayor Barrett signs resolution in opposition to President Trump’s executive order on immigration Community Services partner to feed Local refugee groups united Tuesday, February 7, 2017 as three federal judges grilled lawyers from the Justice Department and Washington state -- to determine whether to lift a nationwide halt against President Donald Trump's travel ban against citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday night assured people that in Milwaukee, immigrants will be safe. City leaders took a major stand against President Trump's executive order on immigration, and immigrants and refugees were able to share their stories. "I am a refugee from Honduras," Raul Ortiz said. Eight-year-old Ortiz received a standing ovation after he shared his story of coming to America, and he wasn't the only one. A Syrian refugee wishing to remain hidden said he hopes others get the same chance he did. "He just hopes they'll have the opportunity to come to America and be greeted with open arms like he was," a translator said on behalf of the refugee. The event, called "Milwaukee Gathers in Unity for Human Dignity" drew dozens of people eager to take on President Trump's executive order on immigration. Milwaukee leaders spoke out and took action. Mayor Barrett signed a resolution against President Trump's executive order, approved by 13 of 15 Milwaukee aldermen earlier Tuesday. The resolution was

"I'm proud to sign this with the help of people who love this nation," Barrett said. Alderman Bob Donovan voted against the measure. "We want to be a welcoming country, but we also have an obligation to ensure the safety in this very dangerous world, the safety of all of our citizens," Donovan said. Alderman Perez issued the following statement after his resolution was approved Tuesday: "I want to thank my Common Council colleagues for their overwhelming support today in approving my resolution for immediate adoption -- Resolution expressing the City of Milwaukee’s opposition to Presidential Executive Order 13769: Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States. "According to the Legislative Reference Bureau, Milwaukee could be the first city in the U.S. to officially

declare its opposition to the travel ban. "The 13-2 vote to approve the resolution shows that while we may disagree on some issues, as a Council we are strongly united in our firm belief that the travel ban order is wrong, divisive, and that it is not based on facts but instead plays on our worst fears and paranoia. "I especially want to thank my partnering co-sponsors – Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and Alderwoman Chantia Lewis – and the colleagues who have also joined on today as additional sponsors: Alderman Robert J. Bauman, Alderman Nik Kovac, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, Alderman Michael J. Murphy, Alderman Cavalier Johnson, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman Jim Bohl, and Alderman Tony Zielinski." There were at least a dozen groups and organizations behind the event Tuesday evening.

The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin announced February 7, 2017 that it will move its downtown meal programs from St. James Episcopal Church at 8th and Wisconsin to the Capuchin Community Services’ St. Ben’s Community Meal location at 9th and State. The Gathering will serve breakfast from the St. Ben’s meal hall Monday through Friday mornings plus a Saturday lunch. Capuchin Community Services will continue to serve dinners Sunday through Friday evenings. The two organizations remain separate non-profit entities. The move will take place in mid-March. Gathering Executive Director Virginia Schrag states, “This is a win-win for Milwaukee’s hungry and homeless. For thirty-five years,

The Gathering has been preparing and serving a hot breakfast Monday through Friday and a Saturday lunch to Milwaukee’s hungry and homeless at our downtown location. From the very beginning, meal times and days were chosen to complement the dinners served Sunday through Friday evenings at St. Ben’s Community Meal (a program of Capuchin Community Services). Now both of our organizations will be able to provide these meals in the same space, offering a respite for our guests and good stewardship of our resources.” The Gathering is conducting a Capital Campaign with the goal of $50,000 to cover moving expenses, equipment purchases and site renovation.

Hidden stories Our American history is full of unique stories that are a part of our national heritage. Many of these historical events, characters, places and times have been recorded in various forms, books and encyclopedias. Quite a few of us have grown up taking history courses and have even gone on to major in history while in college. However, in our quest to learn more about our American history, we soon discover that what has been recorded is not often the full story, but only a brief observation as reflected by historians of that era.

In fact, much of our American history has been told through the eyes of immigrants and not by those Native Americans who were here long before the Mayflower or explorers. And it is important to note that, after Native Americans, everybody else came to these shores as immigrants, slaves every day and as time passes by, someone finds a sliver and indentured servants. of knowledge from the past Our American experi- that lifts the veil on the truth ence is a collection of sto- or how something was acries about immigrants and complished. The recently release “Hidden Figures” movie is just one of those unique stories from history that most of us have never heard of or knew about until now. This bit of history, about an all-black group of female mathematicians assigned to the West Area Computing unit at NASA in the late 1950s and how their work helped to put a man into space as well as several other space missions, is truly remarkable. The telling of their story of overcoming racial and gender barriers, shattering stereotypes and doing the math is truly inspirational. Today, this is also the story of many people who can relate to what these women of color went through just to do a job. I wonder what oth-

How does it feel? These are interesting times in the USA. The nation seems to be in upheaval. Minority groups are starting to see how it feels to be black in the USA. Some people are being forced out of the country, while others can’t get back in. Racist acts from people in power are not only being relegated to African Americans. African Americans should celebrate the reprieve. The new regime in the White House has wasted no time in terrorizing minorities. Being terrorized in the USA is nothing new to African Americans. Terror is new to some of the factions catching heat. There has always been some animosity in the USA toward people who worship Islam. There

USA. It was supposed to be a ban to keep bad people out of the country. There were seven countries on the ban list. All were Muslim countries. The Muslim population of the USA is getting a dose of what it feels like to be black in the USA. African Americans, rejoice; maybe now your heads can heal. Is the ban order fair? Probably not, but this is what black people have been enduring for almost 600 years. There are laws designed to keep African Americans in a cycle of poverty and prison in the USA. This ban is one knife cut from the USA government. This government has chopped African Americans apart. So, man up my Muslim friends; remember, if all else fails you can at least go home. African Americans never had that luxury. My Hispanic compadre, welcome to the party. This is what the USA is about. I know the immigration thing may be unfair. Welcome to the American Dream. What many of the Hispanic population have failed to realize is they are not white. True, many Hispanic people have beige to white complexions. True, their hair is straight. But sorry, amigo, you are not white. Whites may give Hispanics jobs and tell them they are better than blacks.

Whites won’t tell Hispanics they are equal to whites. Don’t feel bad, my Hispanic compadre; many African Americans still don’t understand they are not white. Hispanic people, rejoice. The wall will work both ways. The wall will keep Americans out of Mexico. Just think about it. The wall will keep the foolish people who ordered it built out of Mexico. Also, don’t feel bad, because many inner city housing projects have walls around them. They are not to keep people out but to keep a faction in. So man up Amigos; your pain has just begun. African Americans, sit back and relax. Let these three factions go at each other. Let the government, Muslims, and Hispanics work out their problems. Do not attend any marches or protests. Do not say a word about whether things are right or wrong. African American, sit on your porches, drink lemonade and enjoy the fireworks. After all, when the smoke clears the winner will be coming for you. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

“Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry:” Controlling the beast within (Part 1) The television series, The Incredible Hulk, aired in the late 1970’s for four years. The main character was Dr. David Banner, a physician/ scientist who was searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. After an accidental overdose of gamma radiation, whenever David Banner grew angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurred. Banner transformed into a large green creature which was driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter, Mr. McGee. This month’s series title is a quote that came from the first episode of The Incredible Hulk when Banner cornered McGee, who was snooping around his place. Banner told the inquisitive reporter the line of the series quote: “Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.” The implication is: stop snooping on me or else. Although anger is a God given emotion, it can often be destructive and hurtful. Some have suggested no matter what the problem– childhood defiance, alcohol-

ism, marital conflicts, etc., anger usually can be found at the root of the issue. Our jails are becoming filled; road rage is becoming more the norm than the exception; and a call to action has become necessary to help people manage their anger. Though God does not condemn anger, He does condemn its rule over our lives. God’s Word is not silent in this area and speaks to its presence and value in human life. This month we will identify the biblical perspective of anger, along with its cause and effects. This writer will also suggest ways to manage and control anger. Let’s begin by turning our attention to the causes of

anger. Anger is often a mask for other, deeper emotions and is the response to one of four core causes: frustration, fear, injustice or hurt. When one feels threatened, hurt, put-down or senses fear, this can incite a person to anger. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs in anger.” (Proverbs 15:1.) When one has the feeling of being ‘sold-out’ by friends or betrayed, it can stir up anger. “A perverse man stirs up dissension and gossip separates close friends.” (Proverbs 16:28.) When one suspects that a real injustice has been done to them, or is frustrated about a situation that he or

necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. This information is for educational purposes only. If you would like to contact Rev. Lester, write to her c/o P.O. Box 121, Brookfield, WI. 53008.

Cristo Rey Jesuit: A high school students can bank on LaNaya Greer loves working in the legal department of Associated Bank. She graduated from Milwaukee College Prep in June and started working in August through Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s Corporate Work Study Program. LaNaya and her 116 classmates in the new school’s freshmen class work one day a week in banks, law firms, hospitals and other business offices. She loves how the things she learns at work help her to succeed in school. LaNaya admits, “Work helps me to manage my time better and to break the habit of procrastinating.” LaNaya, who lives on the northwest side, decided to attend Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, located just south of Miller Park, because she was looking for a fresh start; and the idea of working in corporate jobs throughout high school appealed to her. She works downtown at the bank this year but looks forward to experiencing other professional settings in the next three years of high school, before going to college and

choosing a career. Her world is expanding in ways few fifteen-year-old freshman can even imagine. LaNaya offered the following thoughts on her new school. “I like Cristo Rey because I can work at my own pace in each class as long as I meet the required standards before moving on to more advanced material.” As for the Christian, values-based curriculum, she says, “Cristo Rey is open-minded to students of other religions and respects others’ viewpoints.” The school follows in the centuries-old tradition of Jesuit education. In Milwaukee, the Jesuits sponsor Nativity Jesuit Academy, Marquette High School and Marquette University, as well. Taz Landry is Cristo Rey Jesuit’s founding Athletic Director and Physical Education Director. He is a graduate of Rufus King High School and Winona State University. Taz says, “We promote student-athletes at Cristo Rey. We hold students accountable to academics first and then they’re eligible to represent our school on

our athletic teams. Cristo Rey is college prep. I’m a college graduate. I played football in college. I believe I can help our students find the proper balance between studies and sports so they can get to and through college.” When asked how he came to send his son, McKenzie, to Cristo Rey Jesuit, Marlene Billups said, “At the first thought of my son attending a high school with a work study program, I was a little hesitant. I thought to myself, “How will my son manage working and learning at the same time?” After long consideration, my wife and I decided to choose Cristo Rey. Now my son is president of the student council and works with the Milwaukee Bucks public relations department – all while maintaining a 3.0 GPA.” Cristo Rey Jesuit High School will have an “Information Night” for all interested families, churches and community leaders Tuesday, Athletic Director Taz Landry with Nayala Greer, McKFebruary 28, 2017 from 5:00 enzie Billups and classmates. to 6:30 p.m. The school is located at 1215 S. 45th Street, West available. Endometriosis uniquely affects African American women. Traditional thinking was that endometriosis was a condition of white women, but that conventional thinking is rapidly changing. Unfortunately, when Black women have chronic pelvic pain it is presumed to be due to other conditions like PID (pelvic inflammatory disease, a pelvic infection) or uterine fibroid tumors (very common in Black women). However, endometriosis is real and common in many African American women. So, let's start with what exactly is endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the tissue that normally grows inside of the uterus (called endometrium) grows outside of the uterus in the pelvis. Once in the pelvis, the endometrial tissue causes inflammation and scarring as it attaches to pelvic organs (fallopian

Black women and endometriosis

tubes, ovaries, bowel and bladder). This scarring and inflammation is what causes the painful symptoms many with endometriosis experience. Endometriosis is common. Approximately 10 percent of American women (about five million) are affected. Endometriosis is cited as the sin-

gle most common causes of chronic pelvic pain in women (pelvic pain that has lasted for six months or longer). The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but possibilities include menstrual bleeding that goes through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis; genetic factors (it is more common in families;

and having had a prior Cesarean section (C-section) delivery. While we don’t know the exact cause, we do know the symptoms of endometriosis. These symptoms which are frequently wide ranging and debilitating include: • Irregular vaginal bleeding. This can be heavy periods, long periods or spotting/bleeding between periods. • Pelvic pain. Crampy pain that can occur anywhere in the pelvis (middle or sides). • Painful periods. Most women have some cramping during their periods but patients with endometriosis have cramping that goes beyond normal period pain. Menstrual cramps in endometriosis patients are frequently debilitating resulting in missed work, missed school and a general inability to get through one’s normal daily activities.

• Painful intercourse that is usually most pronounced during deep penetration. • Dyschezia. Painful defecation (bowel movements). • Infertility. Infertility is technically defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy despite 12 or more uninterrupted months of trying and endometriosis is one of its most common causes. If you suspect that you might have endometriosis, you should make an appointment with your OB/GYN ASAP. Diagnosing endometriosis requires a minor surgical procedure known as laparoscopy. For women who want to avoid surgery, a presumptive diagnosis can be made using hormonal medications. • Laparoscopy is a quick (usually less than 30-minute) same day surgical procedure that is performed using two small (usually 2cm) incisions. How the decision to become a foster parent can positively influence a foster child Parenting any child, biological or otherwise, takes patience, love and commitment. However, foster parenting can be a bit more challenging and require an extra effort to exhibit each of these qualities at times. Foster children have frequently undergone conditions of abuse and neglect, and often show signs of the negative effects it has had on them. Beyond providing food and shelter, there are many ways to change this around and effectively influ-

ence the life of a foster child for the better. Whether it’s simply lending a supportive shoulder to cry on or opening up your home to a foster child, Milwaukee foster parents will find that the following actions make the most positive impact on children in the foster care system. Offer a listening ear Many foster children need the services of a professional therapist to help them process what they are going

through, but they should always feel comfortable enough going to their foster parents as well to share feelings of both happiness and concern. It seems like a simple task, but taking time out of your busy schedule to just sit down with your foster child and listen to what they have to say about their day can make a world of difference for them in knowing someone cares.

Provide a routine Children need structure and stability to help promote the growth of healthy relationships and an overall well-adjusted life. Sticking to basic daily routines that involve things such as mealtimes, bedtimes, quality time, etc., can go a long way in supplying the consistency a foster child has most likely lacked with their biological family. Get involved in schoolwork and encourage interests Showing you care about their successes in school and other various interests, gives a foster child the encouragement they often need to do well and excel in their development. Nurturing them and getting involved in these areas gives vital support for accomplishing future goals. Maintain boundaries and don’t be afraid to discipline Foster children may come with behavioral problems after all the hardships they’ve experienced. It’s important for foster parents to find a way to appropriately discipline and set limits while still showing love and respect for the child during tougher times. With discipline should come praise and recognition of good behavior as well. Work with the biological family and child welfare agency It can be difficult for loving foster parents to understand the actions of other parents, but it is crucial to work cooperatively with the biological family and child welfare advocates in order

to make certain the child’s needs are being fully met and they are receiving the best possible care from all parties involved. Allow child welfare agencies to be a form of support for your role as a foster parent, take the steps necessary to cultivate constructive visitations with biological parents, and do your best to uphold neutral feelings towards them no matter the situation. Be open to foster adoption Choosing to foster adopt is one of the most significant actions you can take in a foster child’s life. There are times when reuniting a child with their biological parents is no longer an option and they are left to navigate through the foster care system, hoping one day they will have somewhere permanent to call home again. Adoption can give them a renewed perspective on life. Every child deserves to have adults to look up to and rely on. Whether you foster adopt in Milwaukee or make a commitment to being the type of foster parent that provides a home exhibiting each of these characteristics, you are making a positive influence in the life of a child. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Make the most of your rewards program membership I'm often intrigued and sometimes inspired by stories of people traveling the world using points and miles. There's a well-known (within certain circles, at least) man who earned over a million airline miles by purchasing more than $3,000 worth of pudding during a special promotion in 1999. Or, you might have heard about people using coupons during a grocery store's membership-only sale to get food and household products for free. While I might not be as enthusiastic as some world travelers, or as extreme as some couponers, I do see the benefit in a program that's free to join and offers you potentially money-saving perks. However, I also know it's important not to get so caught up that I wind up spending more money than I would otherwise. As a friend of mine loved to say, "Never spend a dollar to save a nickel."

wards programs to choose from and the rules and benefits can vary. For example, a grocer's program might offer the same in-store savings and exclusive coupons to all its members. By contrast, travel rewards programs often have tiers, different levels of membership with varying benefits depending on how often you travel or how much you spend. While the basic tier may offer discounted hotel rates or free Wi-Fi, the higher tiers might come with free room upgrades (including to coveted suites) and guaranteed early check-in and late checkout. • Recognize why companies might have rewards programs. If the thought of having surgery scares you, there are medications that your doctor can prescribe that help to make a presumptive diagnosis of endometriosis. While there unfortunately is no cure for endometriosis, there are multiple treatment options and lifestyle changes that can improve symptoms. Lifestyle changes include: • Increased exercise/ weight loss. Not only does this improve overall health and wellbeing but reducing the extra pounds reduces hormone levels. • Reduce alcohol and caffeine. Both can increase hormone levels. • Eat more fiber: Fiber can reduce hormone levels in your blood. • Eat less soy: Soy mimics the hormone estrogen. • Eat organic: Food with less hormones and steroids are better for our all around health and obviously ingesting less hormones will reduce your own hormone levels. Hormonal suppression Endometriosis is exacerbated by the normal monthly production and fluctuation of hormones. Taking hormonal medications that reduce your natural hormonal www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

cycling frequently will reduce the symptoms of endometriosis while simultaneously slowing its advancement. These hormones include: • Birth control pills • Depo Provera injection • A stronger hormonal injection called Lupron • Surgical intervention Patients with endometriosis usually will end up having surgery and frequently they will have multiple surgical procedures. • Laparoscopy, the same camera surgery that is used to make the diagnosis, can also be used to remove areas of endometriosis. Unfortunately, with time, the endometriosis often returns but the procedure can be repeated. • Hysterectomy is the definitive treatment for endometriosis. It provides the best symptom relief but it is only an option for women who want no further children. Chronic pelvic pain can come from multiple sources and none of the diagnoses are mutually exclusive. When it comes to chronic pelvic pain, educate yourself and be your own advocate. Talk to your doctor about the possibility of endometriosis, ask questions and don’t stop asking until you are satisfied with the answers. If you are not satisfied with the answers, consider seeking a second opinion.

ticular company or product based solely on the rewards program. Buying something simply because you get a discount as a member, or making a purchase "for the points," might be a waste. You could find yourself with a pantry full of products that are slowly going bad, or paying more for a trip because you didn't comparison shop the offerings from other airlines or hotel chains. • Joining a rewards program could lead to overspending if you're not careful. Recognizing that

the programs could be designed to get you to spend more, and more often, can help you refrain from overspending. Here are a few additional ways to make sure you maximize your benefits. • Don't double-count your savings. You're tricking yourself if you consider the rewards points from a retailer's program as savings when making a purchase and then consider the same points as savings (again) when you redeem them for store credit. Count the rewards once, or don't make them part of your buying decision at all. • Keep your programs organized. Points in some programs expire if you don't use them within a specified period or have recent account activity. You could use a website, app or spreadsheet to help track your accounts, how many points or miles you've earned and when they expire.

Another way to avoid overspending is to consider your net cost when comparison shopping. To do this, you'll need a list of the dollar value of each programs' rewards points. You could take a shortcut and copy the values other enthusiasts place on each program's points. Or, you could make estimates of your own based on trips or purchases you regularly make. Now you'll know when 1,000 points are worth $1 or $10 and can plan your purchases accordingly. In the end, you want to be able to make as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as possible, inclusive of the value you place on the rewards. Bottom line: Consumer rewards programs offer a wide variety of benefits, including exclusive savings and complimentary perks. While it's often free to join the programs, and you could get rewarded for doing so, keep the big picture in mind and be careful about letting your membership lead to unnecessary purchases.

Celebrate Black History Month with books on the black experience

Black Like Who?: Writing Black Canada By: Rinaldo Walcott Insomniac Press, 2003 Social Science 187 pages Rinaldo Walcott's groundbreaking study of black culture in Canada, Black Like Who?, caused such an uproar upon its publication in 1997 that Insomniac Press has decided to publish a second revised edition of this perennial best-seller. With its incisive readings of hip-hop, film, literature, social unrest, sports, music and the electronic media, Walcott's book not only assesses the role of black Canadians in defining Canada, it also argues strenuously against any notion of an essentialist Canadian blackness. As erudite on the issue of American super-critic Henry Louis Gates' blindness to black Canadian realities as he is on the rap of the Dream Warriors and Maestro Fresh Wes, Walcott's essays are thought-provoking and always controversial in the best sense of the word. They have added and continue to add immeasurably to public debate. Life on the Color Line: The True Story of a White Boy who Discovered He was Black By: Gregory Howard Williams Penguin, 1996 Social Science 285 pages Gregory Howard Williams and his younger brother, Mike, grew up believing they were white and that their darkskinned father was of Italian descent. Then their parents' marriage disintegrat-

An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Plays By: Harry Justin Elam, Jr. and Robert Alexander Bt Bound, 2001 Drama An anthology of plays includes Suzan-Lori Park's "Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom," as well as works by Cheryl L. ed, their mother departed, and their father's business ventures sank into a sea of liquor. Pursued by debt and personal demons, "Tony" Williams took his two boys to his hometown of Muncie, Indiana, where he was known as "Buster, " and where there was no escape from the truth he had hidden for so long. The truth was as plain as the color of Buster's family. Gregory and Mike Williams were the sons of a brilliant and charming but troubled black man who fled the burden of race until need drove him back to his roots. Suddenly Gregory and Mike discovered they were black as well, strangers in a segregated world about which they knew nothing, forced to learn the strategies of survival amid the poverty, prejudice, and agonizing absurdities of a time and place where racism flourished. In this extraordinary and powerful memoir, Gregory Howard Williams recounts his remarkable journey along the color line and illuminates the contrasts between the black and white worlds: one of privilege, opportunity, and comfort, the other of deprivation, repression, and struggle. He tells the story of his father, a self-destructive man who often neglected his children, yet had faith in his eldest son's ability to succeed in the face of nearly insurmountable obstacles. Of "Miss Dora, " a loving family friend who gave Gregory and his brother the food they ate, the clothes on their backs, and the roof over their heads - all on a salary of just twenty-five dollars per week. Of the hostility and prejudice he encountered all too often, from both blacks and whites, and the surprising moments of encouragement and acceptance he found from each. Williams tells the story, too, of the divergent paths he and his brother eventually took, one defying the odds and the advice of teachers and counselors to become a

Colored People By: Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, 2011 Social Science 240 pages In a coming-of-age story as enchantingly vivid and ribald as anything from Mark Twain or Zora Neale Hurston, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., recounts his childhood in the mill town of Piedmont, West Virginia, in the 1950s and 1960s and ushers readers into a gossip, of lye-andmashed-potato “processes,” and of slyly stubborn resistance to the indignities of segregation. A winner of the Chicago Tribune’s Heartland Award and the Lillian Smith Prize, Colored People is a pungent and poignant masterpiece of recollection, a work that extends and deepens our sense of African American history even as it entrances us with its bravura storytelling. Contradictions:

Ulysses in Black: Ralph Ellison, Classicism, and African American Literature By: Patrice D. Rankine Univ of Wisconsin Press, 2008 Literary Criticism 272 pages In this groundbreaking work, Patrice D. Rankine asserts that the classics need not be a mark of Eurocentrism, as they have long been considered. Instead, the classical tradition can be part of a self-conscious, prideful approach to African American culture, esthetics, and identi-

ty. Ulysses in Black demonstrates that, similar to their white counterparts, African American authors have been students of classical languages, literature, and mythologies by such writers as Homer, Euripides, and Seneca. Ulysses in Black closely analyzes classical themes (the nature of love and its relationship to the social, Dionysus in myth as a parallel to the black protagonist in the American scene, misplaced Ulyssean manhood) as seen in the works of such African American writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Countee Cullen. Rankine finds that the merging of a black esthetic with the classics—contrary to expectations throughout American culture—has often been a radical addressing of concerns including violence against blacks, racism, and oppression. Ultimately, this unique study of black classicism becomes an exploration of America’s broader cultural integrity, one that is inclusive and historic.

The

The annual celebration of Black History Month is not only a time to celebrate the achievements by African Americans, but also a time to reflect on the experience of being black in today's society. This week's set of books explores what it means to be black.
