Gov. Evers Appoints Dr. Joan M. Prince to UWS Board of Regents

Gov. Tony Evers on Monday, February 6, 2023, announced the appointment of Dr. Joan M. Prince to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. The appointment fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Tracey Klein.

“Dr. Prince has an impressive and trailblazing career, including earning four degrees from UW-Milwaukee,” said Gov. Evers. “From working on her doctorate to her time as an associate professor

and vice chancellor to serving at the United Nations, she will bring a wealth of experience and insights to the Board and a deep appreciation for the work of students, faculty, and staff across the System.”

Prince, a Milwaukee native, was the first African American to hold undergraduate and graduate degrees in clinical laboratory medicine with a specialty in flow cytometry and hematology and a doctorate in medical science ed-

ucation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She served as the vice chancellor of global inclusion and

engagement and as an associate professor in biomedical sciences at her alma mater from 2000 to 2021. In 2012, Dr. Prince was nominated by former President Barack Obama to the U.N. General Assembly as a public delegate with the honorary rank of ambassador. In this role, she worked closely with U.N. committees and related organizations, such as UNICEF and U.N. Women, and delivered policy statements on behalf of the United States regarding the education of

women and girls, among other humanitarian issues.

“After having the privilege and honor of receiving four degrees from the University of Wisconsin System, I know firsthand the level of academic excellence as well as the life-changing impact that this distinguished institution has on all that pass through its doors,” said Prince. “It will be my honor and privilege to serve and support the facility, staff, and students on behalf of our state.”

Eight more Memphis police officers to face charges in Tyre Nichols case

Eight more officers with the Memphis Police Department will likely face charges in the aftermath of Tyre Nichols' death last month, officials said on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

During a city council meeting, which focused on officers' conduct during the violent arrest that left Nichols with fatal injuries, the Memphis City Attorney Jennifer Sink spoke alongside Police Chief C.J. Davis to address an ongoing investigation at the police department. Sink told the council that, by her count, eight additional Memphis police officers are expected to receive a statement of charges — which she described as a document outlining their "policy violations" — in connection with Nichols' arrest.

Nichols, a 29-year-old father and FedEx worker living in Memphis, was pulled over by police for an apparent traffic stop on the evening of

Jan. 7. As seen in body-camera and surveillance footage later released by the city, Nichols proceeded to flee the area on foot before officers caught him and beat him at a nearby intersection.

The disturbing video sparked outrage across the country, reigniting congressional calls for police reform while raising questions about the conduct of a number of Memphis police officers and first responders involved in the arrest. Five officers were immediately fired and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. At least two additional officers were relieved of duty on Jan. 8 as the investigation got underway, according to the police department.

At the Tuesday, February 7, 2023, city council meeting, Sink said a total of 13 Memphis police officers have now

been implicated in Nichols' death, at least on administrative charges. She said that

she could not publicly identify the eight officers who are due to receive statements of charges because the investigation into their conduct is still ongoing. However, Sink said she believes those documents will be served to them by the end of the week, with subsequent hearings taking place next week. Sink also said that more detailed information about the officers involved, the charges against them and alleged policy violations they carried out, will be made available to the public next week as well.

Davis told city council members on Tuesday, Febru-

ary 7, 2023, that her review of the officers' implicated in Nichols' case did not reveal warning signs related to conduct in their records when they joined the Memphis Police Department's now-terminated SCORPION unit. The police chief also referenced what she described as a longstanding shortage of supervisors within the police department, although she also said officers were given "exceptional" and frequent training.

Saluting dementia caregivers during Black History Month

During Black History

Month the Alzheimer’s Association would like to celebrate those in the African American community who have traveled the long journey brought on by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. You are all heroes. Dementia is a very real issue in our community. As the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Wisconsin Chapter, my job is to spread the word about all the free care and support services that are available. I’ve met so many folks who are caring for their loved one with dementia. I wanted to share the story of someone I connected with a few months ago. Her name is Tracey McNeely and she is caring for her mother, Ruth, who is 103 years old. Ruth was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2021 and Tracey is now her 24/7 caregiver. Here is Tracey’s story in her own words.

“How did I know something was wrong?

Mom started asking me how’s Clinton or how’s Thomas. She had eleven siblings, eight are gone. It took me by surprise

because they’ve passed. I talked to our doctor at one of the visits and a test was recommended. The test revealed she had Alzheimer’s.

Mom remembers her childhood, the years before she got into the 100’s, and activities she loved in the past. Last week, she asked about her bowling ball. She was an avid bowler, bowling all over

the country and Canada. She was also an expert cook. She had a cake and a pie business, catered for weddings, and has her own cookbook - Ruth’s E-Z Cooking, An Autobiographical Cookbook, Recipes from the Heart - Food for the Soul - that sold in the US and Europe. She is famous for her homemade rolls, and one of her great nieces called, and asked about the recipe, and she remembered it! She doesn’t remember recent things.

I’m very lucky. Mom is very easy to care for and says thank you for everything you do for her. My mom and I attend St. Matthew CME Church, Milwaukee, WI where I am a missionary and the Rev. Dr. R.D. Shaw is the Pastor. In the beginning I was often impatient, because I didn’t know what was going on. I learned that you have to be patient and you have to be kind.

My life is my mother. Sometimes I’m so tired I can’t see straight. I do it all. If you’re like me and do everything, you have to take breaks. Meals on Wheels helps, because I

can do housework and not have to worry about preparing a midday meal.

It is a privilege to care for her, because no matter what the circumstances were, she always supported me. That’s God’s purpose for me.”

The Alzheimer’s Association salutes Tracey McNeely, as a caregiver and an accomplished black woman. This educator taught at Riverside Univ. H.S. in Milwaukee from 1984-1991, was elected co-chair of the English department, and served as yearbook advisor and cheerleading coach. In 1991, she moved to Flint Michigan where she took a job with the Detroit Public Schools. She retired from Detroit Public Schools in 2008, where she also served as alternate rep, Detroit Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, DSA H.S.

Bobbie Kelsey honored with award on 'National Girls and Women in Sports Day'

The Milwaukee Youth Sports Alliance (MYSA) celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (Feb. 1) with a “Lead Her Forward” event to recognize the dedicated female athletes, coaches, and leaders of Milwaukee. As part of the event, MYSA honored Bobbie Kelsey, Milwaukee Public Schools' Commissioner of Interscholastic Athletics and Academics, with its Champion Leadership Award.

“MYSA applauds the vital role played by the individuals and organizations who join us in championing this effort: advocates seeking to protect Title IX and advance gender equity, athletes using their platform to inspire greatness, and coaches working daily to promote play,” Quentin Prince, MYSA exec-

utive director, said.

Kelsey’s sporting life touched nearly every part of the sports world as a player, coach, and broadcaster. During her basketball playing career, Kelsey's Stanford Cardinal squad captured the 1992 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. A two-time co-captain at Stanford, she played in 105 games

- earning 15 starts - despite bookending her college career with devastating ACL injuries. Kelsey was named the team's Most Inspirational Player in 1992 and 1996, and captured the Most Improved Player award in 1993.

Following her playing days, Kelsey immediately launched her coaching career, and worked as an assistant coach

from 1996-2011 for Boise State, Vanderbilt, Florida, Evansville, Western Carolina, Virginia Tech, and her alma mater Stanford. She eventually landed the head coaching gig with the Wisconsin Badgers, where she spent five seasons.

Before joining MPS in July 2019, Kelsey spent time as the Vice President of Corporate and Wellness Programs for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, an assistant coach for the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, and a studio analyst and color commentator for the Big Ten Network.

She now leads MPS Athletics, and strives to promote academic excellence in the classroom, ensure safe and secure environments for competitions, provide op-

portunities for student-athletes to develop confidence, encourage coaches to be role models, and promote the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship and fair play.

"I was surprised, but honored, to receive the Champion Leadership Award from the Milwaukee Sports Youth Alliance in recognition of National Girls and Women in Sports Day," Kelsey said. "I will continue to fight for all athletes, especially girls, to always know they have a place in the world of sports whether on the court as a player or in the front office as a boss."

Kelsey is also a 2020 Milwaukee Black Excellence Awards honoree in the Sports category.

Celebrating Black History All Month Long!

Negro History Week: Here’s the true story behind Black History Month

Everyone knows when Black History Month is, and many know who started it, Carter G. Woodson. But what is not widely know is the story behind how and why the celebration of Black History Month came about. So, let’s take a look at how we got here!

Most people have heard the name Carter G. Woodson, but some may not know why he’s famous or what his contributions to society are. Here’s a quick rundown to get you up to speed about the father of Negro History Week and the true story behind Black History Month.

According to the NAACP, Woodson was born in 1875, the son of formerly enslaved people. He worked on the

The scholar attempted to present his research findings but was banned from academic conferences, such as the American Historical Association Conference, despite being a member. That’s when Woodson realized that if he was going to do the job of promoting and preserving black history, black people would need their own institutions to house that information. In 1915, the historian and minister Jesse E. Moorland partnered, founding the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization funded through philanthropic efforts with the goal of researching and promoting the achievements of people of African descent, History.com

passed away before the evolution happened, at the age of 74 in 1950. However, his work continued, and his legacy continued with many

passing. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the

plishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Today, Black History Month continues as a way to shine a light on the vast contributions of black people across the globe. While we too carry the torch, it is important to remember that there were people like Woodson who dedicated their life’s work to making sure we had access to the information that is so readily available today. Where there were no roads, he paved them, where doors were shut, he built houses and opened them all. May we never forget the sacrifice.

Happy Black History Month!

Meet the history making black female doctor behind the Moderna vaccine

Black History Month is the perfect time to take stock of your health and that of your family. Statistics continue to reveal that we are the last to seek medical care, yet we are the first to have severe cases of many illnesses that continue to plague our quality of life and our longevity.

Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is a black woman who led in the Coronavirus vaccines and immuno-pathogenosis team of The National Institute of Health. When Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, was asked by the National Urban League, “Can you talk about the import of African American scientists in the vaccine process,” he responded, “Ninety to ninety four percent efficacy against clinical disease and almost 100 percent is attributable to its effi-

Mental health has become a prevalent topic in today’s world, especially after the effects of the pandemic. More specifically, black men have been hit very hard due to the economic hardships resulting from the shutdowns.

This article will discuss the three most common mental health disorders that plagued black men and how you can fight back against the symptoms and take control of your mind.

Let’s begin.

Depression Depression is a huge mental health issue that affects black men. Worse, most men won’t seek help due to stigma and pride. Given the recent hardships most people went through during the pandemic, depression has run rampant through many households.

Fighting depression can be tough, especially when everything seems to be against you. However, the best way to start your fight against this mindset is to focus on the positives in your life.

You can also change your diet and introduce more omega-3 fatty acids into your system. That will allow you to see the brighter side of life, giving you the chance to change your circumstances for the better.

There are also numerous helplines people can call when they need to talk to somebody about their current situation and grievances. These trained professionals can often give you insights into your situation that you didn’t think about before, positively changing it for the better.

cacy. That vaccine was actually developed in our Institute’s Vaccine Research Center by a team of scientists led by Dr. Barney Graham and his close associate Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett or Kizzy Corbett. Kizzy is an African American scientist who’s right at the forefront of the development of the vaccine..” Yes History is being made, daily, and Dr. Corbett is proof, even with COVID-19. She, like many others, is leading the way in improved health outcomes. We Salute Dr. Corbett!

We must lead our families to better health traditions.

Vaccinations have been available for many years; and we’ve learned a lot about integrity and responsible access. And, vaccinations are effective! They eliminated serious diseases such as polio, measles, whooping cough,

ovarian cancer, rheumatic fever, and other diseases. The vaccines are important to us, today!

The COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters have controlled COVID-19 and its sub-variants to the point that acute illness, so pervasive during the pandemic, is no

longer a death-sentence; and COVID-19 hospitalizations have been radically reduced. We owe good health to ourselves, our families and our communities. And we thank researchers like Dr. Kizzy Corbett for their contributions, as well.

issues affecting black men

A good night’s rest can go a long way toward clearing your mind when you have anxious thoughts. That may not necessarily mean getting the total 8 hours, but as long as you are on a consistent

sleep schedule, you will see good results.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is another significant ailment affecting most black men’s minds. Un-

to quality care. And, the Biden Administration has assured that dollars be set aside to insure basic care, for all American citizens, regardless of race, color, creed, religion or gender. The Wisconsin Council of Churches (WCC), with MICAH,Souls to the Polls, Pastors United, United Way and CHORUS, is continuing to work with Health Connections, Inc., Ericka Sinclair, Executive Director, 414-999-1099. You can reach Pastor Teresa Thomas-Boyd, WCC Vaccination Outreach Coordinator at 414-507-1115.

The health of a people is the precursor to the health of a nation. Do it today! You are Black History! Do your part today!

like the previous two entries on this list, this mental affliction has external ramifications, as mood swings can sometimes be violent and damaging.

(Continued on pg. 14)

Consider changing your environment as well, which could mean moving to a new city or looking for a new job. Surrounding yourself with new people or different stimuli can refresh your brain and eliminate most negative thoughts.

Anxiety

Anxiety is another big downer for black men in America. With all the perils and twists and turns that life can have, it is only natural to be anxious to walk out your door every day.

Of course, ensuring every aspect of your life is safe and secure can significantly help your anxiety, whether it be your physical protection or financial status. Due to the pandemic, many jobs are hiring at higher rates and can promise a good future for most black men.

Another way you can fight your anxiety is to stay active and avoid alcohol because wine and spirits can often lead to bad situations when you have an anxious mind.

As for the benefits of activity, being active can get your endorphins flowing, which is a natural stress reliever.

Black men and mental health

(Continued from pg. 10)

Both relationships and physical items can feel the wrath of someone experiencing a violent outburst due to their disorder.

While medication can be a huge help, a more natural way to fight back is to talk to someone you trust.

This trusted individual can be a therapist, family member, or best friend as long as it is someone who you do not mind looking vulnerable in front of. Even though there aren’t too many black therapists in the field today, roughly 8,000 are available across the US.

Bottom line, the best advice anyone can give you about fighting your mental illness, whether bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety, is not to be afraid to ask for help.
