Wisconsin Black Historical Society hosts 5th annual genealogy conference

On Saturday, February 10, 2018, the Wisconsin Black Historical Society hosted its 5th annual "What's Your Story: Genealogy Conference," at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum. The event featured informative workshops for both the beginner and experienced genealogists. Sessions covered such topics as how to best use the Internet for research, how to write up your family history, and genetics and genealogy. The highlight of the event was a keynote speaker Robin Foster, a blogger for SavingStories.com and columnist for the Examiner. com. While genealogy has become a popular hobby in the US, African Americans face many difficulties in tracing their family lineage, due to slavery, and lack of official records including birth and death certificates. Pictured at the event are presenter and local author Don S. McClure; presenter Carol Calvin; keynote speaker Robin Foster; and Milwaukee Black Historical Society founder and director Clyborn Benson.
Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce hosts the Wisconsin Black Arts Festival On Friday, February 2 - Sunday, February 4, 2018, the Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2018 Annual Wisconsin Black Arts Festival at the Wisconsin African American Women's Center, 3020 West Vliet Street. The three day event featured local artist, writers, photographers, jewelers, crafters, chefs, musicians, dancers, and entertainers of all types. In addition to vendors, there was a wide variety of entertainment and food. The festival is an opportunity to showcase all the wonderful and diverse artisans and art-based businesses we have in the African American community in Milwaukee. Photos by Richard Allen
Dr. Pat McManus named interim Health Department Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus has been appointed as the interim Milwaukee Health Department Commissioner. She was nominated by resolution of the Milwaukee Common Council and introduced afterward by Milwaukee Council President Ashanti Hamilton on February 4, 2018. The entire council approved her appointment during a regular meeting on February 6. Dr. McManus previously was president and chief executive officer of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Department of Employee Relations has launched a national health commissioner search. The deadline to apply is February 23, 2018. Milwaukee Jewish Museum shines lights on Black History in Milwaukee with personal stories and exhibits On Thursday, January 18, 2018, the Milwaukee Jewish Museum hosted the opening of their new exhibit "Allied in the Fight; Jews and Blacks in the Struggle for Civil Rights." The show features exhibits from events that happened right here in Milwaukee from 1967-1968, centering around civil rights and the fight for open and fair housing. As part of the event, speakers and special guests will be sharing their personal stories with artifacts lent to the museum and with regular lectures. Pictured are two of the first presenters, (from left) Prentice McKinney and Fred Reed, both who were NAACP Milwaukee Youth Commandos. The exhibit runs until March 25, 2018. Challenges African Americans face in the 21st century Week 3: Poverty Poverty is one of the issues facing millions of African American families. The U.S. National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health notes that racial inequality in America persists in part because of racial differences in exposure to adverse neighborhood environments. Blacks are significantly more likely than other Americans to live in high-poverty neighborhoods – neighborhoods characterized by poor schools and limited access to healthcare, jobs, and beneficial social networks – resulting in inequality of opportunity. Poverty affects many people, but, per Feeding America*, it does impact some communities more than others. In fact, African Americans seem to be more disproportionately affected by hunger and poverty. Let’s look at Feeding America’s published statistics regarding the food insecurity among African American communities: • The food insecurity rate among African American households is more than double that of white, non-Hispanic households.
• An estimated 1 in 5 (22 percent) African American households is food insecure as compared to 1 in 11 (9 percent) white, non-Hispanic households and 1 in 8 (12 percent) households overall. • An estimated 1 in 4 (26 percent) African American children live in food-insecure households as compared to 1 in 8 (13 percent) White, non-Hispanic children. What can be done to reduce poverty in America? The Center for American Progress** suggests several ways to cut poverty in America, four of which are noted here: • Creation of jobs. The
best pathway out of poverty is well-paying jobs. • Raise minimum wage. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour which became effective in 2009. Boosting the minimum wage reduces poverty and increase wages. • Support pay equity. Closing the gender wage gap would cut poverty in half for working women and their families and by urging your elected representatives to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act which was introduced in the House in April 2017. The Paycheck Fairness Act provides more effective remedies to victims of discrimina-
tion in the payment of wages based on sex, and for other purposes. Enactment would achieve the promise for all employees of equal pay for equal work. • Reform the criminal justice system and enact policies that support successful re-entry. The U.S. incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country in the world. Mass incarceration is a key driver of poverty and has had an impact on communities of color. When a parent is incarcerated, it makes it hard for a family to make ends meet. Even when the parent is released, even a minor infraction can have collateral consequences that can serve as barriers to climbing out of poverty. Beloved, there are many challenges African Americans face in the United States. During Black History Month, may we look back at the question of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Where Do We Go From Here,” asked during a speech delivered at the 11th Annual SCLC Convention in Atlanta, GA in 1967. While we
may not have the answer, one thing is for sure, we will not find the answers in cultural silos, isolated from each other. We must commit ourselves to working together and supporting each other. Resource fair at 'New School for Youth Empowerment' Doors will be open for families to explore and learn about resources at New School for Youth Empowerment on February 15, 2018 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. A number of community partners will be on hand to showcase their programs and offer assistance. New School for Youth Empowerment is located at
1940 N. 36th St. in Milwaukee. This small-scale high school is accepting enrollment for fall of 2018. The curriculum is founded in social justice to empower students and families in their communities. Students gain the skills they need through hands-on learning and are connected to their community through volunteering.
Speaker topic will explore diversity as a lens for change The Equity–Education– Empowerment Speaker Series invites students, families, staff and the community to hear Emery Petchauer, Ph.D., present ideas for remixing school to better serve students. Dr. Petchauer, an associate professor at Michigan State University who specializes in urban arts, will share ways that schools can borrow from the art of hip hop to use remixing and “the break” to rethink traditional practices. The event will be held Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Rufus King Middle School, located at 121 E. Hadley St. on Milwaukee’s north side. Admission is free. Fixing Milwaukee’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program By City of Milwaukee Health Department Lead poisoning is a public health crisis. Milwaukee has been tackling this with much success. Although we’ve made great progress – lead poisoning rates in Milwaukee have gone down by nearly 70 percent since 2003 – we have more work to do. The news that our Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program failed families is a setback for our entire community. There are many questions: What happened? What is the Health Department doing about it? What should parents do to protect their children? We are working tirelessly to answer these questions – and they will be shared as we continue to investigate what happened. Here’s what we know: Lead in the body is serious. It is especially serious for young children. It can permanently damage a child’s brain. No level of lead in the body is safe for children. But lead is found both inside and outside of our homes. Old lead-based paint, contaminated soil, and water that sits in lead pipes or plumbing are the most common sources of lead exposure for children. The only way to prevent a child from becoming lead poisoned is to prevent their exposure to sources of lead.
And the only way to know if a child has been exposed to lead is to get a blood lead test. Every child in Milwaukee should be tested at least three times before the age of 3, and doctors and clinics should also test children up to age 6 if they are at risk. If you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or have children under age 6, talk to your doctor about lead testing. Most lead testing is done by doctors and clinics, not by the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Those doctors and clinics are responsible for telling parents the results of their child’s blood lead test. However, the Department also has a responsibility. Doctors and clinics also tell us every blood lead test result, and our responsibility is to follow-up with families. At the lowest levels of lead testing, we send information to families reminding them to

What’s next? We will continue to improve our program. We will continue to work with doctors and clinics to reach more children for blood lead tests. We will continue to urge parents to get their child tested for lead exposure. And we will continue to share information with you – parents and caregivers in our city – so that we can all work together to prevent lead poisoning and assure that when a child is exposed, it is detected early. Lead poisoning prevention is a community issue. It will take all of us working together to build a lead-safe Milwaukee. True Black History: Finding a voice for our people
For hundreds of years people of color were legally forbidden to learn how to read or write, thus preventing our people from finding a unique voice to put our thoughts and desires for freedom and equality into words. It was through defiance, perseverance, and self education that we as a community found our voice and made sure it was heard. This week we look at two unique books that collect essays and tell the story of people of color finding their own unique voice. Robert Harris, Jr. grew up in county children's home, gave back as teacher, coach, community leader, and family man It's was only fitting that Robert Harris Jr.'s life be celebrated on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Harris, who died Jan. 8 at 90, was part of a pioneering generation of African American educators in Milwaukee Public Schools during the tumultuous mid-20th century. In addition to teaching science, math and history, he coached football and married the school nurse. He moved up through the academic ranks to principal and college professor, always mindful of what kids needed to succeed. He took his mother's words to heart, that God had blessed their family, even though Parkinson's disease landed her in a county infirmary at age 27 and him in a county children's home, followed by foster care. "He had the drive to succeed and overcome circumstances," said his oldest daughter, Patrice Harris of Milwaukee. "He believed no matter your race and upbringing, you can achieve anything. He knew education was the key, and when he mentored young people, that's what he drove home." Harris initially was denied entrance to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Education because of his race but then became its first African-American student, his family said.
He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees at UWM, followed by a Ford Fellowship doctoral program at UW-Madison. He also taught at UWM as an assistant professor after working for MPS, and maintained a lifelong relationship with his alma mater, including serving on the UWM Board of Visitors. Known as Coach Harris, Robert Harris, Jr., coached football at North Division High School. He also was the first African American high school basketball referee in Wisconsin. As a teacher and coach, Harris was tough, recalled Carl Mueller, a Milwaukee PR man who took an American history course from Harris at Rufus King High School during the summer of 1961. "The first day of class, he stood in front of us and said:
'Ladies and gentlemen, I assume you are here to learn, and that is what you will do this summer,'" Mueller recalled. "I learned a lot that summer and found a lifelong friend and mentor. ... He was a tough coach and teacher but also one of the kindest, most giving people in the community." In addition to coaching football and his daughters' soccer teams, Harris was an analytical student of many games — especially football and golf. He stressed respect, teamwork and mastering fundamentals whenever he coached or played a sport, Patrice Harris said. His volunteerism was broad but typically centered around young people. He served with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee for more than 35 years. The gymnasium at

the Mary Ryan branch of the Boys & Girls Club in Sherman Park bears his name, honoring his tenacious fundraising to get the branch built. He was board chair and director of the Milwaukee Police Athletic League, associate director of the Herb Kohl Milwaukee Youth Foundation and supervisor of the MPS Recreation and Community Education Division, just to name a few other roles. Among his many honors: the William C. Frye Award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, given for outstanding volunteer work for the betterment of the community, and the YMCA Men's Club award for contributions to the community and Wisconsin's youth. "Our family shared him with the community, and he instilled so many values — values that he lived," daughter Patrice said. "Respect everyone no matter their position in life, give to the community in your own way, and focus on doing the best you can." As a football coach and teacher at North Division High School,Robert Harris Jr., met and fell in love with Mary Ann Artmann, the school nurse. They married Aug. 12, 1967. It was while teaching at North Division High School — and coaching football — that "Coach Harris" fell in love with Mary Ann Artmann, the white school nurse. The interracial couple thought they were keeping their relationship a secret, which was best in the 1960s. They found out decades later during a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary and his 90th birthday last fall that others had noticed the coach stopped by the nurse's office a lot. In addition to daughters Patrice and Roberta Harris, the couple raised a foster daughter, Andrea Dean. As a young child, Harris and two of his siblings were sent to live at the Milwaukee County Children's Home. It was across the street from the county infirmary where their mother moved at age 27 following a stroke and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Their father, a foundry worker and then a butler, tried to take care of the kids, but it was too much. The oldest son went to live with family members in another state. What happened after the family was separated was remarkable. Harris thrived at the children's home and later in foster care, his younger daughter Roberta Harris said. "Whenever my dad and uncle talked about the children's home, they had fond memories," she said. "They
knew they were loved." As a young man, Robert Harris, Jr., served in the U.S.Army in Korea. He became a Golden Glove boxer and Army Olympic Welterweight Champion of the Pacific. Robert Harris, Sr. spent every Thursday — his day off — at the children's home. A butler for a wealthy family, he taught his kids they should dress impeccably, and that the dinner table should be set properly. He also instilled in them a love for classical music and the arts. On Sundays, a nurse took the children across the street to visit their mother, Rose, at the infirmary. Their mother had an indomitable spirit, living in the infirmary from age 27 until she died at 78. "It was her resilience, her spirit and her strength that transformed my dad," Roberta Harris said. In his final months, Robert Harris, Jr., showed the same indomitable spirit as his mother. Even on a bad day, when his daughters would ask how he was doing, he'd say "I'm great" with a boxing jab. He remembered his mother's words: "God has blessed our family," and repeated them to a niece when she visited him last fall, after he had a stroke. The niece remembered her own father — his brother — telling her the same thing. The boxing jab came from another chapter in his life. After being in foster care as a teenager, Robert Harris Jr. joined the Army and served during the Korean War. There, he became a Golden Gloves boxer and Army Olympic Welterweight Champion of the Pacific. One of his legacies will continue to give back indefinitely: the African American Alumni Chapter Scholarship Award at UWM, which he started. His family designated the scholarship for memorials in his honor. In addition to his wife, Mary Ann Harris, daughters Patrice and Roberta Harris and foster daughter Andrea Dean, he is survived by a grandson, Troney Shumpert, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at All Saints Catholic Church, 4051 N. 25th St. In lieu of flowers, donations requested. Grease two 6-ounce ramekins with olive oil and dust with sugar. In double boiler, melt chocolate, 1/2 tablespoon olive oil and cream; let cool. Using electric mixer, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Whisk egg yolks into cooled chocolate mixture; fold in egg whites, 1/4 cup sugar and cream of tartar. Pour into prepared ramekins; bake 15 minutes. Tips: This recipe can be easily doubled. Garnish with fresh berries, if desired.
Double-Chocolate Olive Oil Cake with Salted Chocolate Caramel Icing
Recipe courtesy of Chef Sharon Sanders Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes Servings: 8-10 1/2 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, Filippo Berio Extra Light Olive Oil, divided, plus additional for coating pan 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon table salt 1/2 cup half-and-half 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/4 cup, plus 1/3 cup, mini dark chocolate chips, divided 1 cup canned dulce de leche flaky sea salt (optional) Position rack in center of oven and heat to 350 F. Lightly coat 9-inch round cake pan with olive oil and line bottom with parchment paper. Lightly coat parchment with olive oil. In large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir in half-and-half, 1/2 cup olive oil and vanilla. With electric mixer, beat in egg until well blended. Scrape batter into prepared cake pan and sprinkle top with 1/4 cup mini chips. Bake cake 25-30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Place cake on cooling rack 10 minutes then turn cake out onto rack and let cool completely. In medium saucepan, heat dulce de leche over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add remaining olive oil and chocolate chips and stir until chocolate has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove pan from heat. Transfer cake to serving plate. Pour icing over cooled cake, sprinkle with flaky salt, if desired, and serve.
Double-Chocolate Biscotti
Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 40 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup Filippo Berio Extra Light Olive Oil, plus 1 tablespoon for coating pans 1 cup packed light brown sugar 2 eggs, plus 1 egg yolk 1/3 cup milk 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 cup semisweet or bittersweet chocolate morsels
On sheet of waxed paper, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, cinnamon and salt; set aside. Using electric mixer, beat olive oil with sugar until smooth and light. Add eggs and egg yolk, one at a time, beating until smooth. Add milk and vinegar; beat until smooth. With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture, beating until just combined. Stir in chocolate morsels with large spoon; cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 4 hours. Heat oven to 325 F. Grease two large baking sheets with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil each. On lightly floured surface, divide dough into quarters. Roll each piece of dough into log, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Place logs on baking sheets, leaving space in between. Bake about 30 minutes, or until golden and set. Transfer to rack; let cool 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 300 F. On cutting board using serrated knife, cut each log into 3/4-inch-wide slices diagonally. Place slices, cut-side down, on baking sheets. Bake 15-18 minutes, or until toasted. Transfer to racks; let cool.

Local classical musician receives lifetime achievement award from national organization Milwaukee classical musician, conductor and composer Dr. Wallace McClain Cheatham was recently named a 2017 recipient of the Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award by The Marquis Who’s Who Publications Board for “career longevity and demonstrated unwavering excellence in their chosen fields.” A native of Knoxville, TN, Dr. Cheatham came to Racine in 1967 when he was hired to teach music by the Racine Public School System. After three years in Racine, Dr. Cheatham transferred to the Milwaukee Public School System where he remained until his retirement in 2012. During a career which spanned 36 years, he taught music to grades kindergarten through senior high school. Dr. Cheatham earned a Ph.D. in music in 1982 from Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, CA. For more than 100 years, the Marquis Who’s Who Publications Board has
provided biographical data on the lives of today’s leaders and achievers from both the United States and around the world, and from every significant field of endeavor. Dr. Cheatham is a well-known classical musician and composer whose work continues to be performed. The Peck School of the Arts Sorkin Chamber Music Initiative at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee will include a composition written by Dr. Cheatham as part of a concert celebrating Black composers from around the world. The concerts will be directed by Dr. Bernard Zinck on February 22, 2018 at the Rubenstein Pavilion at Jewish Home and Care facility 1414 N. Prospect Ave. on Thursday February 22, 2018 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The other concert date is 3:30 p.m. on Sunday February 25 at the UWM Recital Hall, T:7.875” 2400 E.
