Hazel Kendrix (inset) was already 46 years old and the mother of 10 children in 1969 when she decided to leave her rural Louisiana home, the only place she had ever lived, and move with her children to Milwaukee in search of a better life.

“I married a man,” she explained recently when asked what prompted her to move, “and he was mean, so I left him. I’ve never looked back.”

When she first moved, she had one friend in Milwaukee, a girlfriend from the same rural area in Louisiana where Hazel had previously spent

all of her life. Hazel and her 10 children stayed with that friend until Hazel found a job as a waitress at a fancy restaurant in downtown Milwaukee. Hazel worked there for about 10 years before retiring sometime in the 1970s. Eventually almost all Hazel’s childhood friends from Louisiana followed her to Milwaukee. “They were so glad to leave Louisiana,” she recalled.

The only job Hazel had ever had in Louisiana was picking cotton at harvest time. “I didn’t like it,” she said, “but I had to do it. I was never a lazy person.”

When she started working as a waitress in Milwaukee, Hazel said that she relied on her older children to babysit the younger ones while she

Elmer C. Anderson, Jr. passes

Elmer C. (Andy) Anderson, Jr., of Mequon, WI, passed away on February 2, 2023. Andy was born on November 19, 1930 in Excelsior, WV. He was preceded in death by his father Elmer C. Anderson, Sr., his mother Edythe Hyatt Anderson, and his brother Robert Anderson.

Andy was an active participant in various community organizations, such as the Community Brainstorming Conference. He was previously employed by the Milwaukee Urban League as the Deputy Director, and held various management positions, including the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and the Milwaukee Area Technical College. He was a retired pharmacist, was also a Real Estate Broker, having owned his own company, and was a consultant to many.

Andy is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Marilyn; son, Clinton; sisters, Debra (Greg) Anderson-Conliffe of Institute, WV, and Marian (Kenny) Butler of Scott Depot, WV; niece, Keshia (Brittany) Anderson-Butler of Pliny, WV;

and goddaughter, Wendy Walker-Williams of Chicago, IL.

Andy will be cremated, and a memorial service will be announced with a full obituary at a later date.

was away. “That was how we were able to make it,” she said.

Soon after her 97th birthday, Hazel moved in with one of her great grandchildren, Dominique. Even though it is difficult for her to do much of the cleaning and maintenance chores around the house nowadays, she still likes to stay busy. “I am not a lazy person,” she said for the third time during the interview. For the most part Hazel is able to get around the house without the use of a walker. When she goes out, she usually travels with a wheelchair just in case she

gets tired.

“I don’t go out much anymore, maybe to church or Potawatomi (Hotel and Casino),” she said.

There are exceptions when she still “kicks up her heels,” such as the 100th birthday party her extended family threw for her at the Masonic Lodge in Brookfield on February 6, 2023.

“That was the happiest day of my life in Milwaukee,” she said. “I am so glad that the Lord let me live to see all of these days.”

Being Frank

Your life is just that, your life. Yet, how many people in the world today are living their own life? How many people in the world are following a life path for which the guidelines were created by others? Many people in all countries live lives that were patterned by someone else’s concept on how life should be. Everyone has a certain number of years to be on this wonderful planet. Why not use your years to follow a life path of your own creation?

I want you to think. Think about how your life is going. Is your life going the way you wanted it to go? Are you living the way you want and enjoying the life path you are on? If you have answered no to either of the previous questions then, you may want to think about the following question: Whose concept of living are you following and why?

Societies often create guidelines that lead to or create acceptable living conditions. In many cases these guidelines are accommodating and can lead to a produc-

Whose path are you on?

moving to a better area so the child doesn’t have to risk being robbed on a daily basis. I’m talking about parents who did certain things in the past and are scared their children will do what they did. These parents influence their children into life paths they want them in, not what the child may want. Is there any wonder that drug and psychological counseling numbers are up among teens in the USA?

tive life. Yet, who is this life productive for? Is it for the individual, or is it a life designed to keep society going in a certain direction? If this is the case has anyone really chosen their own path, or are they simply doing what society dictates to preserve itself? Whose concept of living fits another person? In all truth, no one's. This is why you have to evaluate your life and figure out whose concept you are following. No matter how long you have been following others' dictates, it is never too late to find your path.

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

First off, you have to be confident in accepting the fact that you have been following a life path that is not yours. Once you do this you can begin to change the way you think. Changing your thought will change your actions and your life circumstances. Are you really happy living in the situation you are in? Are you simply making do because everyone else seems to be in a similar situation? Why do you do the things you do? Where did you get the morals or lack of morals from? Have you been steered into a life path that does not bring you

joy, but false happiness? Are you settling into a life pattern because everyone you know, and supposedly love, are in similar situations? Be honest and shame the devil. Misery loves company. Unconscious acceptance of misery in order to be a part of a society or like others is an epidemic no one talks about.

Family is one of the biggest influences on choosing a life path. Very often a person may be steered into a life path chosen by a parent. It is rare to see a person step out of the role parents have chosen for them. Parents often stunt their children’s growth trying to protect them from the evils that they committed or overcame. I do not mean

Look at your life path. Be honest and ask yourself, is this the path I chose, or one I was steered into? Have you been browbeaten by family into a life you do not truly enjoy? Remember, it is never too late to follow Robert Frost and take the road less traveled.

Honoring Black History

Celebrating Black History All Month Long!

The book that exposed anti-black racism in the classroom

In 1925, teachers at the Negro Manual and Training High School of Muskogee, Oklahoma, made what they thought was an appropriate choice of textbook: The Negro in Our History, by the Harvard-trained black historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson had written this "history of the United States as it has been influenced by the presence of the Negro" to supply the "need of schools long since desiring such a work," as he wrote in the book's preface. Upon learning of this textbook choice, white segregationists on the school board sprang immediately into action. They decreed that no book could be “instilled in the schools that is either klan or antiklan,” insinuating that Woodson’s Black history textbook was “antiklan."

The school board banned the book. It confiscated all copies. It punished the teachers. It forced the resignation of the school’s principal. “It’s striking how similar that feels and sounds to the contemporary moment,” the Harvard education historian Jarvis R. Givens told me.

A century ago, white segregationists were banning anti-racist books and “Negro studies” as well as punishing and threatening anti-racist educators all over Jim Crow America.

In response to these incidents, Woodson embarked on a new initiative to support educators and promote Negro history. In 1926, he founded Negro History Week, which officially became Black History Month 50 years later. And Woodson’s most important scholarly contribution, his 1933 book, The Mis-education of the Negro, highlighted the importance of teaching black history. The book argued that black children learn to despise themselves—just as non-black people learn to hate black people—when black history is not taught. As Woodson wrote, “There would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom.” Combining pedagogical theory, history, and memoir, this was a book about the dangerously racist state of education, a book for 2023 as much as it was for 1933.

American curriculum.

Kendi: It seems like this book could have just as easily been titled "The Mis-education of the American."

Givens: The overrepresentation of European and Euro-American history and culture offers white people this kind of inflated sense of importance. Woodson would say that this has historically been part and parcel of the identity development of white students, or any other

group who is taught to look down on and despise black people as a means of propping themselves up. There are several parts in the book when Woodson points to this miseducation of non-black people—especially when he writes, “There would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom.”

Kendi: Many people would oppose educators and books that state that black people are “demons,” as former Ferguson officer Darren

The Mis-education of the Negro was recently reissued with an introduction from Givens, who studies the history of American education and has written extensively on black educators, including Carter G. Woodson. Givens helped develop the AP African American Studies course that was piloted in about 60 schools across the United States and recently was rejected in Florida. We discussed the enduring relevance and power of this classic book 90 years after its was published.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Ibram X. Kendi: For the past two years, many politicians and political operatives have made the case that teaching white students about African American history, about slavery, about racism, makes them feel bad or is even a form of miseducation. But these operatives do not seem to care about the educational experience of black children. I’m curious what Carter G. Woodson would say about the impact on black children of not teaching that material. What is Woodson saying in Mis-education?

Jarvis R. Givens: He argues that the physical violence black people experience in the world is inextricably linked to curricular violence. He would say black students must be equipped with resources to resist this violation of their dignity and humanity; they must be given an opportunity to know themselves and the world on new terms. To deny black students the opportunity to critically study black life and culture is to deny them the opportunity to think outside of the racial myths that are deeply embedded in the

Wilson described Michael Brown. But there seems to be less concern about the harm that comes from what educators and books do not state. Can you share how Woodson talked about the harm that comes from absences?

Givens: This is a really important question. We absolutely learn through omissions. We learn through things that are not included

Black History Month
As African American studies faces resistance, a conversation about the continued relevance of Carter G. Woodson’s 1933 book, "The Mis-education of the Negro"

The book

(Continued from pg. 8) in curricula. It teaches us what’s deemed unworthy of inclusion, what’s deemed as lacking in “educational value” according to the state of Florida.

And this is something that I think is very, very important, even when we think about the way black history and culture have been included. You know, for so long, you could read the entire history of slavery and never know that black people resisted, that they led rebellions, that they formed Maroon communities. Students could walk away thinking that slavery was just this benevolent institution, that black people had to work hard but they benefited from being immersed in the West and the Christian world. They made all these beautiful songs and sang all these Negro spirituals. This is evidence that they were happy. The absence of narratives about black people fighting back presents them as these apolitical subjects. It strips them of their agency.

Kendi: So, those who are attacking what they call “critical race theory” characterize these omissions—that end up pacifying people—as “education.” And they clas-

sify anti-racist books (like, frankly, my own) and African American studies as “indoctrination.” What do you make of that?

Givens: If anything, there is a very clear system of indoctrination that has always been embedded in the American curriculum. It’s called white supremacy. By engaging in African American studies, we are inviting students to help undo that.

It’s also important to emphasize that there are diverse perspectives in African American studies. "There is no one 'African American' studies perspective." We can have different kinds of intellectual projects and schools of thought. And the AP African American Studies course, from what I know of it, as someone who was part of the team of scholars and K–12 educators that developed it, is that we were all bringing the diversity of black thought and debates to the table. The course represents a good model of the kind of plurality of thought that we might consider when we’re talking about reframing the larger structure of knowledge in American schools.

Kendi: You wrote beautifully about the fight of Woodson and the black teachers of his generation during Jim

Crow in your book Fugitive Pedagogy. At that time, too, white segregationists were banning not only Woodson’s books but all sorts of anti-racist books and lessons. But black teachers found ways to still teach black students the truth. What are some of the lessons, particularly for teachers in this moment who want students to learn about racism and U.S. history and racial equality?

Givens: The teachers I wrote about in Fugitive Pedagogy were deeply aware that the efforts to restrict what could and could not be taught in the classroom infringed on the dignity of black students, and it also infringed on their dignity as black educators. And there is a larger lesson here: that the dignity of students is always bound up with the dignity of teachers. How we treat and handle teachers says something about who we are as a society.

The de-professionalization of teachers in America is something that’s been happening for a very long time. The teaching profession has become so debased, not on the part of teachers themselves, but in terms of the social pressures that they’re having to operate under. It really exposes a deeply ingrained crisis in the culture

of the society that we live in. Teachers are not viewed as intellectuals. They’re seen as people who are just sup-

posed to come in and follow a script and not be thinking beings at all.

Five ways to love yourself all year long: body, mind, and soul

When you get wrapped up in the day-to-day tasks of life and taking care of others, it can be easy to forget about loving the most important person in your life -YOU!

Now that we are at the beginning of the year, we can focus on loving ourselves and putting more energy into the goals we want to accomplish throughout the year!

Loving yourself is more than just buying yourself something nice from time to time or going to the spa. Self-love encompasses loving your entire being, body, mind, and soul. It means doing the things you need to do for yourself, even when you don’t feel like it. Here are five ways to make sure you are showing yourself the best love you have to offer:

Love your body

1. Diet

Loving yourself doesn’t always include the things that are easiest to do. Eating the proper diet can feel like you’re giving yourself a dose of tough love, but it’s the kind of love your body needs.

What we consume in our diets has a large impact on our physical health. Giving up donuts for apples can be hard, but your body will appreciate it.

Studies have shown that diets high in processed foods and sugars lead to life-altering diseases like diabetes,

hypertension, and obesity. Eating a nutritionally balanced diet with fruit, vegetables, protein and healthy fats will give your body the fuel it needs to be productive in your personal and work life.

This change in your diet can lead to healthy weight loss. It’s easy to eat mindlessly when you’re sitting around the house. Challenge yourself by giving up foods and beverages that are not good for your body.

2. Exercise

Generally, exercise is not what comes to mind when you think of loving yourself.

Exercise can be challenging at times, but it’s a great way to show your body the love it deserves.

Staying active for 30 minutes every day with exercises that promote heart health, flexibility, and strength promotes a high quality of life.

Consistent exercise decreases your chances of diseases like hypertension, diabetes, muscle and joint pain, and obesity.

Love your mind

3. Rest and relaxation

We all know that stress is a natural part of our lives. However, it does not have to consume us. Taking time away from the hustle and bustle of life is a great way to love your mind.

Planning and scheduling time for rest and relaxation

will give your mind the rejuvenation it needs to stay clear and strong. This can mean unplugging (no use of electronic devices) from the world during certain times of the day or going on a mind-clearing walk in the park alone.

Rest and relaxation are just as important to the mind as eating is to your body. Make it a priority!

4. Self-reflection

With schedules becoming more filled with tasks and “To-Do” lists, going from day-to-day without self-reflection has become the norm. Self-reflection allows you to spend time with your thoughts and feelings.

Self-reflection can be done with a counselor or you can record your thoughts and feelings in a journal. Love through self-reflection can give you insight and resolution regarding your choices about the present and the future.

Love your soul

5. Connect with God

Loving the part of you that makes you who you are is vital to loving your whole self.

Connecting with God through prayer, meditation, music, or fellowshipping with others (you don’t have to fellowship in person; you can use your computer or phone to group chat or even stream church services.) are great ways to love your soul.

Feeding your soul with God’s word, encouragement and positivity from others, or even through acts of service toward others will uplift your soul through peace and purpose.

Loving yourself takes some effort on your part, but you are more than worth it. It’s OK to spread love to others, but don’t forget to give love to the person who matters the most in your life – YOU!

Assistance for Voting

A voter may select an individual to assist in casting their vote if the voter declares to the presiding official that they are unable to read, have difficulty reading, writing, or understanding English, or that due to disability are unable to cast their ballot. The selected individual rendering assistance may not be the voter’s employer or an agent of that employer or an officer or agent of a labor organization which represents the voter.

Where Optical Scan Voting is Used

The voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of their choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall write in the name of the person of their choice in the space provided for a write-in vote and fill in the oval next to the write-in line.

When using an electronic ballot marking device (“ExpressVote”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen or use the tactile pad to select the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote.

After Voting the Ballot

After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it may be inserted in the security sleeve, so the marks do not show. The voter shall insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The voter shall leave the polling place promptly.

Spoiling Ballots

If a voter spoils an optical scan ballot, they shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place.

The following is a sample of the official ballot:

Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 24, 316 and portions of wards 8, 23 and 25 will have the same contests as shown on the sample ballot included with this notice.
