Senate passes anti-lynching bill in renewed effort to make it a federal hate crime
Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper
Save the Date
Two competitors for the 2020 Democratic nomination joined forces Thursday, February 14, 2019 in a renewed effort to pass their anti-lynching legislation. The Senate passed the legislation from California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker and South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott last year, but the House never took up the measure. On Thursday, the Senate again passed the bill via unanimous consent. If signed into law, the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act would outline the specific killing of lynching, noting its violent and racist legacy, and add it to the federal list of hate crimes. As Booker's office noted Thursday, the vote followed more than a century of efforts to outlaw lynching that have failed to pass. Following the Thursday, February 14, 2019 unanimous vote in the Senate, the bill would then go to the House before President Donald Trump can sign it into law.
Sen. Kamala Harris
Sen. Cory Booker
Thursday's vote was also notable also due to the nascent political rivalry between the bill's sponsors. Harris and Booker each recently announced they would seek their party's nomination next year to challenge Trump for the White House, and they showed no ill will during Thursday's vote, even wishing each other a "Happy Valentine's Day."
"We've worked together on many issues over a long time, over many years, frankly, even before I got to the Senate," Harris said. "This is an historic day. We're both very proud of the work that we've done together." Booker said they had been working on the bill "quite a bit," and when asked if he felt dynamics had changed in the Senate with himself and other Democrats running Asked about Booker being against each other, Booker an opponent in the prima- said his colleagues were "sisry, Harris said the two were ters and brothers." friends with "a great deal "There have always been of affection and respect for sibling rivalries throughout each other." history, but at the end of the day, there is still family," Booker said.

Studio of African Diaspora Culture, 2767 N Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive The residual effects of Jim Crow laws are still current in our society today--- even in Milwaukee. We see them in education, housing, the legal system and other areas, resulting in pain and suffering. The entire community needs to be involved around these issues. You are invited to deepen your awareness about these issues and what we as a community can do to begin to dismantle racial injustices. The Jim Crow exhibit at King Drive Commons Gallery and Studio, curated by Marquita Edwards, shows how deeply ingrained this is in our consciousness. “This exhibit called me all the way to Big Rapids Michigan to visit the Jim Crow Museum and meet with the founder, Dr. Pilgrim. It was so astonishing I had to come back and create an exhibit using photography, artifacts and the paintings of artist Bashir Malik. This exhibit held in January brought in many people, including members of the organization… From the Same Dust, and Kathryn Wurzer, a member whose concerned on the issue, in wanting to collaborate in sponsoring this

Black History Month: Joining the fight for social justice (Conclusion) “Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Last year on April 4, 2018 marked the 50th year anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. As Dr. King and other supporters of nonviolent civil protests were confronted with some definite realities in their generation, so we now have our own 21st century social justice challenges. Fifty years after Dr. King’s death, persistent inequality is obviously a serious problem as our nation is still confronted by some glaring realities of political and racial divisions and crucial social and civil injustice issues. Our nation is dealing with challenges such as killing of black life, global food crises, poverty, homelessness, racial disparities in the prison sys-
tem, health care and wealth inequities, etc., resulting in uprisings, demonstrations, strikes and solidarity protests. Time and experience have proven the prophetic wisdom of Dr. King to be true: "We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." (Letter From A Birmingham Jail, April 1963). While in the last 50 years our nation has come a long
way on the road of progress making improvements in equalizing opportunities for African Americans and people of color; our nation still has many, many miles to go on the road to true equality in order to fulfill Dr. King’s dream that one day we will live in a nation where we will not be judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. This Black History Month, even as we recognize the gains of the past, may we
continue moving forward with the energy that further progress demands. May we become more engaged and mobilized as activists in the fight against racial, social and civil injustices and find ways we can advocate for these social justices. It first begins by understanding the issues and then joining with the church in building a faithbased movement that will raise awareness for justice and equality for all. With a shared belief in social justice and equality, we can achieve even more as a people in the future. Dr. King told his listeners in a speech entitled “Keep On Moving,” delivered at St. Luke’s Baptist Church in Birmingham Alabama in May 1963: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
Let’s keep moving forward with optimism and insight, joining the new generation of activists to take a stand and continue the fight for social justice. COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM coach Baldwin shares the lessons of working through adversity
ERIC VON
BROADCAST FELLOWSHIP The Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship provides funding for a year-long fellowship to a recent college graduate who will receive paid experience to begin building a successful career in broadcast journalism.
UWM coach Pat Baldwin discusses the importance of battling through tough times. By Pat Baldwin Men’s head basketball coach University of WisconsinMilwaukee Things have been difficult for the Milwaukee Panthers over the past month or so. We had a tough five-game road trip and our team has been dealing with some adversity. It’s not the first time our players and coaches have had a rough stretch, and it won’t be the last. Anyone who plays a sport at any level – and especially at the NCAA Division I level – is going to have to fight through adversity at some point, whether it’s a heartbreaking loss or an injury or a slump. With that experience come lessons that can help not only with basketball, but also other areas of life. I can draw from some things in my past to help me, our coaches and our players get through this. As a sophomore at Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth, Kansas, I was the starting point guard. I was the youngest player on the varsity and, in our first league game, I played poorly. I put up a couple air balls, turned the ball over a bunch, and we lost the game. Later, when we were watching film, I could hear someone in the crowd – a really good friend of mine – yelling, ‘Get Pat Baldwin out of there!’ That was tough. I don’t know if I ever lost confidence, but you’re second-guessing yourself. My coaching staff was really good in that situation, reassuring me that I was a good player. It’s just one game, they told me. There will be many more, and you’ll improve and get better, which I did. Then, at Northwestern University, I faced the most challenging thing I’ve ever gone through athletically, because I wasn’t used to losing. My freshman year, we didn’t win a single Big Ten game. So, dealing with adversity
and learning how to overcome it was something that was forced upon you. Later, as an assistant coach under Chris Collins at my alma mater, we had to scrape our way up from the bottom of the barrel again. The first couple years were tough. We played Wisconsin when the Badgers had Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky, and the score at halftime was 40-14. But we helped our players develop Teflon skin and learn how to fight and overcome things, and in my fourth year as an assistant, we made it to the NCAA Tournament. So, I’m not discouraged. Don’t get me wrong – I want to win. I want us to have all the success we can possibly have, but I’m not discouraged because I haven’t seen even one second of quit in our players. The litmus test, after tough losses or a stretch like we’ve just gone through, is practice. I see our guys working extremely hard. Guys are texting me: “Coach, can I come in and watch film?” “Coach, can I get up some extra shots?” I look in their eyes and I can see the commitment. They’re 100 percent invested in the process and in each other. That doesn’t mean it’s been easy. We talk all the time about the big picture, and for young adults, that’s sometimes hard to see. They’re impatient for success, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The thing we’re impressing on them is development, getting better, and that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. But we also stress the urgency of today. That’s the reason we work so hard. That’s the reason we do skill development every single day in practice. We’re working to get better.

Health & Fitness
When facing stress or illnesses, seniors should stick to a protein-rich diet Older adults need to eat more protein-rich foods when they're trying to lose weight, dealing with a chronic or acute illness, or facing a hospitalization, according to a growing consensus among scientists. During these stressful periods, aging bodies process protein less efficiently and need more of it to maintain muscle mass and strength, bone health, and other essential physiological functions. Even healthy seniors need more protein than when they were younger to help preserve muscle mass, experts suggest. Yet up to one-third of older adults don't eat an adequate amount due to reduced appetite, dental issues, impaired taste, swallowing problems and limited financial resources. Combined with a tendency to become more sedentary, this puts them at risk of deteriorating muscles, compromised mobility, slower recovery from bouts of illness and the loss of independence. Recent research suggests that older adults who consume more protein are less likely to lose "functioning": the ability to dress themselves, get out of bed, walk up a flight of stairs and more. In a 2018 study that followed more than 2,900 seniors over 23 years, researchers found
that those who ate the most protein were 30 percent less likely to become functionally impaired than those who ate the least amount. While not conclusive (older adults who eat more protein may be healthier to begin with), "our work suggests that older adults who consume more protein have better outcomes," said Paul Jacques, co-author of the study and director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Program at Tufts University's Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. In another study, which was published in 2017 and followed nearly 2,000 older adults over six years, people who consumed the least amount of protein were almost twice as likely to have difficulty walking or climbing steps as those who ate the most, after adjusting for
health behaviors, chronic conditions and other factors. "While eating an adequate amount of protein is not going to prevent age-associated loss of muscle altogether, not eating enough protein can be an exacerbating factor that causes older adults to lose muscle faster," said Wayne Campbell, a professor of nutrition science at Purdue University . So how much protein should seniors eat? The most commonly cited standard is the recommended dietary allowance (RDA): 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight per day. For a 150-pound woman, that translates into eating 55 grams of protein a day; for a 180-pound man, 65 grams. To put that into perspective, a 6-ounce serving of Greek yogurt has 18 grams; a half-cup of cottage cheese,

14 grams; a 3-ounce serving of skinless chicken, 28 grams; a half-cup of lentils, 9 grams; and a cup of milk, 8 grams. Older adults were rarely included in studies used to establish the RDAs, however, and experts caution that this standard might not adequately address health needs in the older population. After reviewing additional evidence, an international group of physicians and nutrition experts in 2013 recommended that healthy older adults consume 1 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily - a 25 to 50 percent increase over the RDA. (That's 69 to 81 grams for a 150-pound woman, and 81 to 98 grams for a 180-pound man.) For seniors with acute or chronic diseases, the group suggested protein intake of 1.2 to 1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight while noting that the precise amount needed "depends on the disease, its severity" and other factors. (At the 1.5 grams-per-kilogram level, a 150-pound woman would need to eat 102 grams of protein daily, while a 180-pound man would need to eat 123 grams.) Even higher levels, up to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight, could be needed, it noted, for older adults who are severely ill or malnourished. (These recommendations don't apply to seniors with kidney disease, who should not increase their protein intake unless they're on dialysis, experts said.) "Protein becomes much more important during events in an older adult's life that force them into a situation of muscle disuse - a hip or knee replacement, for instance," said Stuart Phillips, director of McMaster University's Center for Nutrition, Exercise and Health Research in Canada.
"The total dose that you eat may not matter as much as the dose you eat at a given meal," said Elena Volpi, a professor of geriatrics and cell biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. "If I eat too little protein during a meal, I may not adequately stimulate the uptake of amino acids into skeletal muscle. If I eat too much, say from a large T-bone steak, I won't be able to store all of it away." Based on her research, Volpi suggests that older adults eat 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal. Practically, that means rethinking what people eat at breakfast, when protein intake tends to be lowest. "Oatmeal or cereal with milk isn't enough; people should think of adding a Greek yogurt, an egg or a turkey sausage," Volpi said. Protein in all forms is fine. Animal protein contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies need; plant protein doesn't. If you're a vegetarian, "it just takes more work to balance all the amino acids in your diet" by eating a variety of foods, said Denise Kathryn Houston, associate professor of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina. Otherwise, "I would typically recommend having some animal protein in your diet." As long as red meat is lean and you don't eat it too often, "that's OK," Houston said. What about powdered or liquid protein supplements? "There's generally no need for supplements unless someone is malnourished, sick or hospitalized," Volpi said.
In a study not yet published, she examined the feasibility of supplementing the diets of older adults discharged from the hospi"Higher amounts of pro- tal with extra protein for a tein have value when some- month. Three major benefits of updated bookkeeping and accounting records Last week in a discussion with a business coaching client, I asked if she had updated bookkeeping and accounting records that would help her make the best business decision for a big question about her business. “No,” she replied, she didn’t have updated books. Without them, any decision regarding product lines, pricing or customer capacity is just a guess! Guessing is not the way to run a business. On the contrary, every business big and small should have regularly updated bookkeeping and accounting records so business leaders can make the right decision with a foundation in the data. Follow along to learn three big benefits of keeping your bookkeeping and accounting records updated on a regular basis and some tips to get you started with your bookkeeping for your business. 1. Strategically ladder-up your revenue As a freelance writer for my primary income, one of my biggest goals is finding the best clients that offer me the most significant return on my time invested. While freelancing is a business that is tough to scale, I like to do something I call “laddering up” my clients where I climb up and add new high-quality clients while letting go lower-quality and lower-paying clients as they are replaced. This process is great in theory, and most freelancers and business owners understand the concept. But why do they continue to struggle with low-quality clients? Because they don’t look at the numbers and objectively look for
your books updated, here is one last lynchpin: your taxes. You have to do taxes if you have a business. That is not optional. What is optional is making it a stressful period by ignoring your accounting throughout the year and rushing to get it all done in April before the deadline.
ways to bring on better clients and get rid of the bad ones. With no metrics, you might not even know which clients are draining your resources and which lead to the best profitability in your business. A few months after quitting my job to go full-time online, a look at my own updated bookkeeping records showed that about 76 percent of my income came from writing while around 15 percent came from website development and support. That is a clear 80/20 rule example. I cut the 15 percent of my income that was taking way too much of my time and my total income roughly tripled over the next few months! 2. Cut underperforming products and services The focus of my conversation with the coaching client focused on turning her services into a product she could sell for a fixed monthly subscription rate. But with no detailed accounting records beyond the reports she gets from her payment processor, she didn’t have any real records to show her income by customer or

product. It doesn’t matter if you are a solo freelancer or a business with thousands of employees, you absolutely need this information! With the right details in hand, you can pick out the one product that sucks away too much of your time for too little money. You can identify expensive recurring tasks you may be able to outsource or eliminate. As you can see from the example above, sometimes cutting underperforming products or services can lead to significant growth. Success in this area of your business comes down to focus. But without properly updated bookkeeping and accounting records, you don’t know where to focus. You might be wasting hours and have no idea because you don’t have the data. End that big mistake right away. Get those accounting books together and keep them updated, at least monthly, so you can make the best management decisions. 3. Save time and money at tax time If increasing revenues and cutting costs were not enough motivation to keep
Instead of this method, plan and keep your books updated at least once every month. I go a little over what most people need and update my accounting records weekly. But whatever you do, quarterly should be the bare minimum for bookkeeping updates for tax purposes.

Trans-Professionals provides transportation and quality customer service Kurt Mosley treats his clients like family. Mosley own Trans-Professionals, which offers non-emergency medical transportation to doctor offices, dialysis, cancer care, adult day care and other appointments throughout southeast Wisconsin. Mosley, who also is the company’s CEO/Director of Operations, is passionate about making sure clients are treated with courtesy and respect. “For us, customer service is everything. We want to make sure we pick up our client on time, we drop them off on time and, while we’re doing that, we have a great conversation in the car. It’s all about making them feel comfortable about being with us,” he said. “I have a rule that dialysis and cancer patients go home first. I’ve heard so many complaints in the industry where someone picked up a client from dialysis at noon and they didn’t get home until 2 p.m.,” Mosley said. “One of the reasons I got into this business was I started hearing these complaints, and I thought, ‘I can do this so much better, because they don’t care,’” he said. “I care
about the clients from a personal standpoint. I have a family member on dialysis, one of my best friends is on dialysis, and I had a family member who was undergoing cancer treatment. I know that after their appointments, they were exhausted, and they wanted to go home.” The company drives clients from group homes, IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self Direct) a self-directed long-term care option, and My Choice Family Care, a managed care organization, as well as private-pay customers The Trans-Professionals staff becomes close to their regular customers, Mosley said. “Ninety-seven percent of our customers ride by themselves, so when they get in the van, they’re riding with the driver and that’s it. There is a lot of individual one-onone time with clients. When they cancel because they aren’t feeling well, drivers ask how they’re doing. One driver today asked me: ‘Do I need me to bring them some soup or something?’ They take it really personally.” That type of dedication, along with support from his wife, Michelle, led to My Choice Family Care nominating Mosley and Trans-pro-
