Zion Hill MBC celebrates women for Black History Month

On Sunday, February 24, 2019, Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church hosted its annual Black History program at the church, 1825 W. Hampton Ave. This year's Black History Program theme was "Celebrating Women," and featured a special tribute to music icon Aretha Franklin. As part of the event four outstanding women and church members were honored for their years of service to the community. The honorees were Mother Ardella Tayor, the late Mother Arlene Newson, the late Mother Zeola Stegall, and State Senator Lena Taylor. The program was hosted by Rev. Dr. Russell B. Williamson. Pictured are (from left) Ardella Taylor's son, Dennis McMurray; Mother Ardella Taylor; Shelia Payton who was accepting for Mother Arlene Newson; Senator Lena Taylor; and Pamela Evans and Kevin Evans who accepted the recognition on behalf of Mother Zeola Stegall.

Christlyn FrederickStanley, principal of Keefe Avenue School, was looking for help in putting together a Black History Month program. She discovered that help was just four-tenths of a mile away. Sixteen members of St. Mark AME Church spent the morning of February 14 reading to approximately 130 students at the school, which enrolls youngsters from kindergarten through eighth grade. For the past year, several members of St. Mark AME Church in Milwaukee have spent time helping students improve their reading comprehension. Ann Beamon and

Helen Harris have been the coordinators of the reading program. “Mrs. Beamon organized for the volunteers to be here and she asked what we were doing for Black History Month,” said FrederickStanley, who is a member of the church. “We were going to see a play, but we weren’t doing anything in the school per se. Mrs. Beamon and Mrs. Harris got together and decided that we should have something with the tutors emphasizing black history.” Some of the books included the life of civil rights icon and current U.S. Congressman John Lewis; the bravery of the Little Rock Nine in Arkansas; and the music of Louis Armstrong. The Black History Month

program was part of an ongoing relationship between the church and the school. “St. Mark AME Church has adopted Keefe Avenue School, and the Geraldine Bradford Missionary Society in particular has started a tutoring program because we want to have an impact on the school and the children,” Harris said. “We want the children to know they are important.” While the goal of the St. Mark program is to help improve student reading skills, it is equally important to tell the youngsters that they have the ability to make a difference in their lives. In the eighth grade class, taught by Stanley Levells, it was (Continued on pg. 2)

(Continued from pg. 1) stressed how many young people were involved in the civil rights movement. Lewis was 23-years-old when he was one of the central figures in the “The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” that was held on August 28, 1963. And it was high school students who led the way when schools were integrated in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Those stories are mightily important, Harris said.

“They need to read, they need to know how to read and learn about the world around them and they need to know about their history,” Harris said. “If they know about the history of our people and the struggles we have come through and the achievement we have made in spite of it, we feel that we can inspire our children.” For Frederick-Stanley, the date of the reading had a special meaning. February 14 is the birth date of Richard Allen, who is the founder of

the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Keefe Avenue School principal said she is grateful that the program exists. “To have a guest come in and read is fascinating for the children," Frederick-Stanley said. “To have someone to come in and take their time with you, I think they really appreciated that.”

Oscars: women, people of color triumph on night of firsts (and seconds) Oscar Sunday marked a night of important firsts — and seconds — for diverse artists and filmmakers and their Hollywood contributions. The 2019 telecast started making history almost immediately. After Regina King accepted best supporting actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, Ruth E. Carter became the first African American woman to ever win best costume design, for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther. “I dreamed of this night and I prayed for this night honestly…what it would mean not just for me but for young people coming behind me,” Carter told press backstage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. A nod to a new generation of costumers could have been expected, as the first person Carter thanked in her acceptance speech was Spike Lee. The director gave her her start, she said, and he was himself a multiple nominee on Sunday for BlacKkKlansman. “I hope through my example this means there is hope. Other people can come on in and win an Oscar, just like I did,” Carter said. The production designer of Black Panther, Hannah Beachler, took that advice to heart and proceed to win in

her category minutes after Carter, the first time a woman of color had even been nominated in that space. “When you think it’s impossible, just remember to say this piece of advice I got from a very wise woman: I did my best, and my best is good enough,” Beachler said in an emotional speech that kicked off with a shout out to New Orleans. Both Beachler and Carter’s wins are historic in multiple ways: An African American woman hasn’t won a non-acting Oscar in 30 years. Mahershala Ali took the best supporting actor Oscar for Green Book, and now becomes the only other black performer besides Denzel Washington to have won more than one Academy Award. tor Peter Farrelly for “really giving us the space” to work out the complexity of his inter-sectional character Don Shirley (who was black and queer). Despite Disney-Pixar often taking the animated feature category, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended its clean-sweep of awards season against films including Incredibles 2. Producers Phil Lord (a Cuban-American) and Chris Miller accepted the prize with directors including Peter Ramsey, for mounting the groundbreaking Sony Pictures Animation film that was the first to ever feature a Spider-Man of color (the Afro-Latino Miles Morales). Being Frank In the USA there are fraternities and sororities that supposedly epitomize the cream of African American society. I won’t say the names but use the term many use when referring to these organizations: The Divine Nine. It is great to celebrate these nine organizations during Black History Month. Yet, it is time to celebrate the ultimate fraternity, Black Man. You have to pledge or pay initiation fees to join one of the Divine Nine. The only way you can get into the ultimate fraternity, Black Man, is to be born into it. No amount of pledging or payments can make you a part of this elite fraternity. I know what many are thinking, “What is so great about being a Black Man?” Well now let’s get to it. The Black Man is the most hated creature on the planet. There is no other creature, man or plant, that the society seems to despise as much as a black man. This is especially true if it is a black man in his natural state. In the USA they attempted to break the black man by various means, from torture to turning the black woman against him. This persecution is what makes

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

The loneliness epidemic (Week 1) In 2010, AARP published a report Loneliness Among Older Adults: A National Survey of Adults 45+ showing that a little over one-third (35 percent) of the 3,000 survey respondents were categorized as lonely reporting significant bouts of loneliness. The study also found that lonely respondents were less likely to be involved in activities that build social networks, such as attending religious services, volunteering, participating in a community organization or spending time on a hobby. This month, this column will look at loneliness which experts have called the percentage of lonely Americans are at epidemic levels. What causes loneliness? According to research by John Cacioppo, a University of Chicago psychologist and one of the top loneliness experts, loneliness is strongly connected to genetics. Other contributing factors include

situational variables, such as physical isolation, moving to a new location and divorce. The death of someone significant in a person's life can also lead to feelings of loneliness. Loneliness can also be a symptom of a psychological disorder such as depression. Loneliness can also be attributed to internal factors such as low self-esteem. People who lack confidence in themselves often believe that they are unworthy of the at-

MPS Student Job Fair is Wednesday, March 13, 2019 To match up local employers with student job seekers, Milwaukee Public Schools will host a job fair on March 13, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Student Union. Approximately 1,000 students are expected to attend in search of summer and year-round work. Last year’s job fair was a huge success, with employers and students requesting a repeat event in 2019. Employers can register at

https://mpsstudentjobfair. eventbrite.com Space at the job fair is free and includes one parking spot and a light lunch. An area will be available for onsite interviews. For questions and registration information, contact Tamera Coleman at employMPSstudents@milwaukee.k12.wi.us Students who complete a Work Readiness session at their school are eligible to attend the job fair. Work Readiness sessions help prepare

students to fill out job applications, interview, and be ready for the world of work. Students can speak with their counselor or stop in any College and Career Center with questions. Bus transportation will be provided for students to attend the job fair thanks to a generous donation from the Al Hurvis/ADAMM Education Foundation. The UWM Student Union is located at 2200 East Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53211.

Knapp Elementary aims to launch walking school bus program On an unseasonably warm February morning, 11 children — some quiet and sleepy-eyed, some chipper and chatty — followed Regina Stieber along Milwaukee sidewalks wet with melting snow. Two days per week, Lincoln Avenue Elementary School's "walking bus" picks up students on a set route and makes sure they get to school safely. Stieber, Lincoln's community school coordinator, along with special education teacher Sue Sauerberg and her 18-year-son, make the mile walk each Monday while two other Lincoln teachers lead the "bus," which is actually an supervised procession of walkers, on Fridays. Lincoln is a Milwaukee Public Schools bilingual community school located on the city's south side, The Journal Times reported.

Stieber said the Lincoln bus has been successful in increasing school attendance for its 14 participants in kindergarten through fifth grade. Officials at Knapp Elementary School, the Racine Unified School District's (RUSD) first community school, are looking to increase student attendance by start a walking bus of their own but have struggled to find volunteers. Community schools work to serve the wider neighborhood, not just students, which includes increased after-school programming and more parent involvement. Dani Dekker, assistant principal at Knapp, told the RUSD School Board during a December meeting that Knapp had already identified students who would benefit from a walking school bus and worked with Carthage College students to map out routes. The school attempt-

ed to start a walking bus last year, but could not find enough volunteers to lead it. Knapp is continuing to work on a solution. "It's been a challenge to find people to escort the kids," said Unified spokeswoman Stacy Tapp. Tapp believes that one of the challenges in getting volunteers is Knapp's early start time, with classes beginning at 7:20 a.m. Lincoln's start

time is similarly early, at 7:30 a.m. The school's volunteers generally start the walking route at about 6:40 a.m. The students on the Lincoln route are those who live relatively close to the school but have poor attendance, or who do not have a family member who can walk with them to school. "We have really good attendance for the walking school bus for those kids on Mondays and Fridays, so we are getting those kids to school those days," Stieber said. "And the kids love it." The school bus leaders carry a cutout of a school bus, and chat with the students or play games along the way. When it's cold outside, sometimes Stieber asks the kids to do jumping jacks or wiggle their feet while they wait for others to come out of their houses. Lincoln started its Friday morning walking bus in fall 2017 and added Mondays this school year. The school community had previously identified safety as a No. 1 priority at Lincoln, especially when it comes to kids walking to school. The district learned about walking school buses at a conference through Safe Routes to School, an organization that provides districts with information and resources about walking school buses. Parents loved the idea, Stieber said. Jamie Racine, United Way of Racine County's community schools manager who

works with RUSD on community school services, has reached out to Stieber for information on the Lincoln walking bus and tips about how to attract volunteers. Stieber said that parent buyin would increase the odds of success, and added that parents could even do a more informal version of a walking bus. "If they're already walking their kid to school, they could pick up another kid on the way," she said. Both Lincoln Avenue and Knapp are considered high-poverty schools with large minority populations. According to the state Department of Public Instruction, 96 percent of Lincoln students and 85 percent of Knapp students are economically disadvantaged. About 50 percent of Knapp students are black, and 74 percent of Lincoln students are Hispanic. Not all of Lincoln Avenue's students walk to school, but the majority of them do. Some of the kids who were recommended for the bus lived close but had poor attendance, while others just happen to reside along the route and being picked up helped their parents in the morning. Last year, two mothers with children at Lincoln led the walking bus, along with the community school coordinator at the time, which had 28 participants. Both had to stop doing the bus this year, but Stieber said the school knew it needed to keep the program going. "Since it was so successful and the kids loved it, and we saw improvement in their attendance, it was like a given that we were going to do it again this year," Stieber said. Janeth Prado, mother of a kindergarten student at the school, was one of the mothers who volunteered last year. "To help the school was a big motivation," Prado, who (Continued on pg. 12)

Seven safety tips for senior travelers You don’t have to stop traveling just because you’re getting older. If anything, it’s when you are older that travel means more; a lifetime of knowledge allows you to fully appreciate the new experiences you’re having. And, if not for travel, what did you work so hard for all those years? But being older does often mean that you can’t travel the way you used to. We’re not talking about upgrading from a hostel to a proper hotel. What we’re referring to are physical limitations you might need to work around, as well as the fact that as an older individual you’ve suddenly become numero uno on a thief ’s hit list. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your belongings. IndependentTraveler.com reached out to two experts on boomer and senior travel for advice on what older travelers can do to stay safe away from home. Liz Dahl is the co-founder of Boomer Travel Patrol, a boomer-centric website featuring expert advice from a variety of writers. Steve Hanson is senior editor of Senior Travel Expert, which provides tips for seniors who like to travel independently. Here is their advice, along with a few of our favorite tips from the AARP. 1. Get insurance While travel insurance is important for people of any age, it truly is essential for older travelers who are more at risk of falling and hurting themselves, getting sick, or needing extra medication if their travel is interrupted or delayed. “Nothing is worse than to be in a foreign land and find yourself in a situation where you have fallen or run out of medication and not knowing what to do or if you’ll be covered,” Dahl said. She added that insurance usually costs an extra $100 – $200, not a lot to guarantee that you’ll be covered if something goes wrong. 2. Don’t advertise your absence Though travelers assume hotels are safe places, the

Walking bus (Continued from pg. 11) speaks Spanish, said through a translator. Prado lives close to Lincoln and said she wanted to encourage students who also live nearby to get to school and to help her son make friends. "It was a beautiful experience to wake up and to help other kids come to school," she said. Stieber said that being a part of the bus not only

truth is that people with bad intentions can come and go quite easily in most hotels. But a few tactics can help older travelers, who are often seen as better targets, protect their belongings. One tip Dahl offers is this: Don’t put the “clean my room” sign on your hotel door. “Those signs are an open invitation to let people know that the room is empty,” she said. Thieves know that travelers usually leave their passports, extra money and jewelry in their rooms, and they know how to jimmy open locks. You don’t want to advertise that you’re not there. Instead, call the front desk on the way out and let them know you’ll be leaving and that they can send someone up to clean the room. A few other hotel tips recommended by AARP include engaging the security chain on your door whenever you’re in the room, asking for a room near the elevator (more foot traffic will deter thieves) and staying away from ground-floor rooms where window entry is possible.

sive jewelry and watches than younger travelers.” Unless you’re going to Richard Branson’s Necker Island, you might want to consider leaving the bling at home. And remember, a small compact camera or even a smartphone will take pretty good photos nowadays.

Hanson says senior travelers need to take as much care with their medications as they do their money and passports. Don’t pack them in checked luggage, and don’t leave them lying in the open in your hotel room. And always make sure you’ve got enough medicine to last you an extra day or two, just in case your flight home is delayed.

6. Keep others in the loop If you’re going to be traveling solo, AARP recommends that you keep others apprised of your daily itinerary, including your innkeeper or hotel concierge. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back; then stick to your schedule. Keep a cell phone on you at all times.

destination you’re traveling to. 5. Keep the bling to a minimum One of the perks about getting older is that you can afford things you may not have been able to when you were younger. But carrying items like nice jewelry, gold watches and fancy cameras makes you a target for thieves, especially as many ne’er-do-wells believe — rightly or wrongly — that older travelers are less aware of their surroundings, more unsteady on their feet and basically all around easier targets. This applies to carrying cash as well. Hanson told IndependentTraveler. com, “Seniors are more likely to carry cash around … and more likely to have expen-

7. Stay safe on your feet Beyond wearing comfortable shoes in order to get through full days of walking and touring, wearing flats will also help older travelers to stay steady on their feet. Heels, even small ones, can make you more prone to spraining an ankle or falling, Dahl said, especially if you have any balance issues. Flats will help you stay comfortable and balanced. “They don’t have to be ugly, just flat,” Dahl added.

Hanson also advises keeping a paper with the names of any essential medicines you take and their dosages so you can try to replace them if needed. If you take a brand-name medication, 3. Watch what you eat write down the generic name Like it or not, older folks too. Even better: Try to find tend to have more sensitive out the name of the medicatummies and are frequently tion in the language of the on restricted diets. It’s understandable to want to forget those facts while away from home, but doing so could have undesirable side effects. Forget the days you could eat a plateful of heavy bratwurst in Germany or spicy vindaloo in India. Unless you want to spend more time in your hotel room than out and about, you’ll probably want to keep the heavy, spicy or cheesy 2821 N 4th Street, Suite 210 items to a minimum. 4. Mind your meds Speaking of medicine,

helps with attendance, but in other aspects of a child's school experience. "There has been changes in behavior in some of the kids who were feeling disconnected from the school, who were kind of detached," Stieber said. "After doing the walking school bus, they come to school more, so they see their friends more. They also get one-on-one adult attention in the morning. They have their own little social group and it's just a great way to start your day."

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 60 minutes Servings: 6

Circulon Symmetry Chocolate 5.5-Quart Casserole 6 slices thick-cut smoked bacon, chopped 1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into 3/4-inch pieces 2 medium onions, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 5 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons chili powder 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper 2 cups chicken broth 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) no-salt-added fire-roasted diced tomatoes 1 can (15 ounces) no-salt-added black beans 1/2 cup quick-cooking barley 1/2 teaspoon salt Heat casserole over medium heat. Reduce bacon fat in casserole to 2 tablespoons and return to stove over medium-high heat. Add sweet potatoes, onions and jalapeno pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is slightly softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Stir in chili powder, cumin, oregano and ground chipotle; cook until fragrant, 15 seconds. Pour in broth, tomatoes, beans and barley; reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until sweet potatoes are tender and barley is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in bacon and salt; let stand 15 minutes before serving.
