33rd Black Excellence Awards marks 'historical moment' honoring largest number of women of color in local media By Dwayne Lee Special for the Milwaukee Times
sion news anchors together to be honored for their accomplishments. It is believed to be the first time that all the local news anchors and producers were present at the same event at the same time. The Women in Media Honorees were Liddie Collins, MPTV 10/36 TV producer; Melinda Davenport, WISN CH12 TV anchor; Carole Meekins, Today’s TMJ4 TV anchor; Kim Murphy, Fox6Now TV anchor; Amanda Porterfield, CBS 58 TV anchor; Shannon Sims, Today’s TMJ4 TV anchor; Mary Stoker Smith, Fox6Now TV anchor; Beverly Taylor, Fox6Now TV anchor; and Toya Washington, WISN CH 12 TV anchor The theme for this year’s event was “Mastering the Tools of Excellence.” Due to rapid innovations in technology we are on our way to becoming a global community. The free exchange of ideas between individuals on other continents is taking place more and more every day in all aspects of life and industry. One of the companies at the center of this technology revolution is Intel Corporation. Intel products can be found in a large number of everyday items – from computers, to cars, cellphones, even kitchen appliances and televisions are powered by Intel microprocessor chips. Keynote speaker Rosalind L. Hudnell, President, Intel Foundation and Vice President, Human Resources, Intel Corporation delivered an inspirational talk on the importance of remaining technologically literate in this
When the lights dimmed and the 2018 Black Excellence Award program began at 7 p.m. on Friday February 23, 2018, more than 800 smiling faces in beaded gowns and tuxedos initially continued to socialize preventing co-hosts, Sheldon Dutes and Andy Choi of WISN CH12 from being heard. The audience was enjoying catching up with old friends and making new ones so much that Mr. Dutes needed some assistance from several people in the audience to help quiet the room. For 33 consecutive years, the Black Excellence Awards have been the ultimate Milwaukee red-carpet event during Black History Month for people who quietly go about helping others and making their community a better place in which to live. Each year the Black Excellence Awards presented by The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper honors approximately three dozen adults for their accomplishments. The Black Excellence Awards also serves as a fundraising event to provide scholarships to a group of Milwaukee High School seniors; and each year a Special Honoree theme is chosen to recognize a group of individuals, all of whom have demonstrated excellence in a specific field. All 33 Black Excellence Award programs have been historic in their own way, but this year was especially notable for gathering the largest number of Milwaukee's African American female televi-

The Black Excellence Awards featured brief remarks by four local dignitaries: Mayor Tom Barrett; Lt. Gov. Addressing the honorees, Ms. Hudnell praised them saying, “Your crowns have already been paid for. All you have to do is put it on. Tonight is a night to wear your crown proudly. People need to see you beyond Milwaukee," she said. Many honorees had family, friends and co-workers who attended the banquet to support their preferred nominee. Lennie M. Mosley, an honoree in the volunteerism category, said she brought more than 56 supporters from across the country. Student Minister William Muhammad of the Nation of Islam and an honoree in the community leadership category said he was honored to be recognized in this way,

Many former honorees return year after year to help recognize the honorees and volunteer to help the program flow smoothly. Some have donated more than two decades of service, including Nellie Weddle, a 1999 honoree; and Dr. Carter, who was recognized in 1992.
“I did not realize this was such a huge event,” said Gervis Myles, an honoree in military/public service. “This Special Honoree Toya is quite extraordinary and a Washington said being se- pleasant surprise.”

although he felt somewhat unworthy. “It is a reminder to continue serving the community,” he said. Cassandra McShepard, an honoree in the extraordinary achievement category, agreed with Student Minister Muhammad that it was “humbling” to be recognized for one’s work and so seldom done nowadays. Special Honoree Liddie Collins, a long time TV producer, said she was especially honored to be included with all the young women in media. “I love the challenge of new technology,” she said. “People often come to me at the station for technological help.”
In addition to the 10 Louvenia Johnson Scholarship Award recipients, this year the Black Excellence Awards recognized two additonal students. Long-time, Milwaukee pharmacist and author Dr. Lester L. Carter, Jr., provided a scholarship grant to an 11th student, Simone Wright, and Faithe Colas, the widow of Eric Von, presented Teran Powell with the Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship, which provides a yearlong internship at public radio station WUWM.

Women’s History Month (Week One) “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” - Fannie Lou Hamer In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, the U. S. Congress designated the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” This law requested the president to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the month of March with appropriate activities and ceremonies. Since 1987, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States
and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. This month, this column will highlight several women, past and present, and their contributions to the history of the United States. Fannie Lou Hamer (19171977) Fannie Lou Hamer was an electrifying speaker and constant activist for civil rights. She was born October 6, 1917 in the Mississippi Delta. She was the youngest of 20 children born to sharecroppers and grew up in the heat of the Jim Crow South where she had spent much of her life picking cotton until she was fired for trying

Convention, in support of the Freedom Democratic Party, she vividly recounted the brutal beating in that Mississippi jail received just because she wanted to register to vote. Fannie Lou Hamer was such an outspoken activist, that even President Johnson applied political pressure to the Credentials Committee to drop support for Hamer’s Freedom Party. In fact, during Hamer’s speech before the Credentials Committee, President Johnson called a Press Conference at the White House so that her speech before the Credentials Committee would be preempted. In spite of President Johnson’s efforts, it did not silence Hamer. That evening, Hamer’s testimony before the Credentials Committee was aired in its entirety in prime time on the evening news. Before cancer claimed her life in March 1977, Hamer was not afraid to speak up for herself and even coined the phrase: “I’m sick and tired of being sick of tired.” We celebrate Fannie Lou Hamer this Women’s History Month.

to register to vote. Hamer walked with a limp and had a blood clot behind her eye from being beaten in a Mississippi jail. But that did not stop Hamer. Hamer was a community organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which focused on ending racial segregation and injustice in the South. Hamer also helped found the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. During a speech before the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Next week: Continuation

Students at Oliver Wendell Holmes School on Milwaukee’s north side are making new friends – with volunteers from the Milwaukee Urban League and GE Healthcare. Volunteers from both organizations are engaging with students as tutors and mentors and using their expertise to raise student achievement. Milwaukee Public Schools has similar mentor relationships in many schools that provide students with individual attention from caring adults. The Milwaukee Urban League is growing its relationship with O. W. Holmes and the community by pro-
viding a variety of resources for school families. A generous contribution of $15,000 from the Milwaukee Urban League will support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in the school as well as family programming. The organization also regularly sends staff to connect families with community resources such as employment, financial literacy, adult education and driver’s license assistance. The Milwaukee Urban League is leveraging its Guild and Young Professionals affinity groups and its relationship with GE Healthcare to send volunteers to the school.
The MPS Department of Business, Community and Family Partnerships is grateful to the Milwaukee Urban League, its Guild and Young Professionals groups, and GE Healthcare for their generous support of O. W. Holmes students and families. Oliver Wendell Holmes School offers Head Start through 8th grade and is located at 2463 N. Buffum St. Kindergarten enrollment for fall 2018 is open until March 4, 2018. To enroll, visit mpsmke.com or call (414) 4758204.

FAMILY FEATURES
or many households, there are some requirements when you make time to prepare a family meal. Each component must be something you can prepare quickly around extracurricular activities and homework, and it must feature foods that even the pickiest of eaters will happily devour. These simple recipes can help you focus that precious time on catching up around the table together. Find more familyfriendly recipes at Culinary.net.
A Sweet Dinner Idea
Chicken is a favorite for all ages, and this recipe gives crunchy chicken a sweet twist that’s sure to earn clean plates. Baked, not fried, these tenders are a healthier take on traditional dippers. The tangy barbecue sauce and sweet honey mixed right into the breading makes them tasty on their own, but even better dipped in a sweet honey barbecue sauce that complements those flavors. Look for more sweet meal ideas at honey.com.

A Simple, Family-Friendly Menu Create Lifelong Memories in the Kitchen Give your family an opportunity to spend quality time together in the kitchen by engaging little ones. As a bonus, it also helps reinforce washing hands. 4. Count on the Counter. Put your kids to the test to help count and
measure ingredients as you add them to the recipe. 5. Rock ’n’ Roll. Blast some fun tunes. This can help hold kids’ attention while working. 6. Share the Joy. Make every moment sharable by staging the final product for a quick photo shoot. 7. Have Fun. Dress for the occasion with matching aprons and chefs’ hats. Tweak recipes to embrace your family’s interests and make dinner something to smile about.
