GMUL hosts '62nd Annual Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon'

The Greater Milwaukee Urban League (GMUL) celebrated equity and inclusion at the "62nd Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr., Equal Opportunity Day Luncheon" on February 23, 2023 at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Individuals received awards in areas including economic development, education, health, advocacy, and more. GMUL and Molson Coors

also launched "The Entrepreneurship Connection," a yearlong program sponsored by Molson Coors to provide black entrepreneurs with the support and assistance to grow their businesses and black wealth. As part of the event Dr. William Finlayson received the Whitney M. Young, Jr., Legacy Award.

Local photographer honored at City's Black History program

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023 the City of Milwaukee's "7th Annual Black History Program" was held at the City Hall Rotunda. The program was put on by Alderpersons Milele Coggs, Mark Chambers, Jr., Khalif Rainey and Russell W. Stamper II. The Living Legend Award went to Yvonne Kemp, who was born in Racine, Wisconsin, but raised in Milwaukee. She attended Seifert Elementary School and graduated from North Division High School. After a 30-year career as an accountant, Yvonne eagerly accepted an offer from her brother, renowned photographer Harry Kemp, to work as his assistant

after initially handling scheduling and accounting for Harry. When Harry died, Yvonne stepped in to fulfill several of his contracts, including a prestigious position as a photographer for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Milwaukee Community Journal and the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper. Nearly a decade and a half later, Yvonne emerged as one of the city's most prominent photographers, having built an impressive resume and reputation. The Common Council also awarded the Emerging Leadership award to Jeremiah Johnson (right photo).

Milwaukee Walmart closing, Hayat Pharmacy works to fill need

MCTS testing of new payment system starts

this month

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is introducing a new payment system that will allow it to cap fares for riders — helping improve social equity in the county, researchers say.

Essentially, everyone who has a bus card or downloads the app will ride for free after hitting the fare cap. The caps in Milwaukee will be $4 for the day, $19.50 for the week and $72 for the month.

purchase a long-term ticket for the month or quarter would be paying the worst value.

According to a 2022 MCTS survey, roughly 45 percent of riders make $50,000 or less, while 32 percent made $50,000 or more. Roughly 23 percent did not answer.

Philbrick, executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San José State University.

The Walmart Supercenter at Milwaukee's Timmerman Plaza will close for good March 10, 2023.

Thousands rely on it for groceries, but the pharmacy is also key for many people's essential medications. Hayat Pharmacy held a wellness event Saturday, February. 25, 2023 as it works to fill the gap.

"Hayat is not just about putting pills into a vial and selling it to a patient. It's about all these extra services," said Dr. Hashim Zaibak, the pharmacy's founder.

Pharmacists and other staff from the Hayat Pharmacy near 86th and Silver Spring were available to help people from the neighborhood transfer their medications and more.

"It's an opportunity to serve the community we love serving," Zaibak said.

"I think it's a great opportunity for those who are still struggling to find a pharmacy option," said Ald. Mark Chambers.

Chambers urges people to prepare for the change. The upcoming loss of the store is a loss to the community.

"My office is working extremely hard to find replacements. It’s going to take some time, but I will not stop until we find something," he said.

"That's how success happens, when you find solutions to people's problems," said Zaibak.

"The systems that were historically built were the least advantageous to lower income and minorities, so this system really treats everyone equally, which is what we're after," said Tim Hosch, chief financial officer for MCTS.

Prior to fare capping, those who had enough money to do so would purchase longterm passes, which require a bigger up-front payment but are the best value overall. Those who couldn't afford to

Nearly half — 46 percent — of riders said they have little or no choice but to use the bus. About 20 percent said they did not have access to a private vehicle and would be forced to use expensive rideshares like Uber and Lyft without the bus system.

"A lot of non-choice riders, this is their only access to their jobs, to doctor's appointments, to friends, and there's a growing body of research, which shows that transportation insecurity is a significant factor in persistent poverty," said Karen

Fare capping ensures "black and brown community members and riders are not disproportionately affected by the high cost of transit," Philbrick said.

Fare capping is part of a wider MCTS change

New tap-and-go validators were installed on buses in February, and pilot testing began on March 1, 2023. The validators can be used by those who have the Umo Mobility app or a new WisGo card. The temporary 105-minute and all-day fare options were removed as riders can now store value on the app. All users will be able to enjoy fare capping through the app.

Your teen’s mental health is at risk.

Young people in communities of color have many reasons to stress—and they’re targeted with more tobacco ads, too. That’s dangerous, because menthol can make nicotine even more addictive. And nicotine can make the stress kids may experience even worse. Protect your teen’s mental health. Talk about the dangers of nicotine today.

Being Frank

You hear African Americans complain constantly about racism in the USA.

“The Caucasians are racist,” has been said by many African Americans. “No other-so called people of color get the treatment African Americans get in the USA,” is the statement many African American political aspirants scream. Well, I say, “The most racist treatment I have run into during the past few years came from African Americans.” This is where you can hear the crickets chirp because African Americans have gone quiet. Hello? African Americans, are you still there?

African Americans have been programmed to the point where they are the worst perpetrators of racism in the USA. Go into a store and stand in line behind a white person and watch how the African American cashier smiles. This same cashier will drop the smile when another African American approaches. You can say I am lying or exaggerating all you want. The previous statement is

1000 years African American self-racism

true. I am not saying all African Americans who work in the service industry act like 1860 southern whites. I am saying that there is a high number of African American service workers who treat other African Americans like feces.

The sickening part of watching or being on the receiving end of African American self-racism is the hypocrisy. African Americans look down on each other to the point where other races have to laugh. You can speak politely to this African American racism tool and you will still get bad treatment. The vibe you get from the racism tool African American is, “Why are you here?” This is extremely true if you are in an upscale establishment. Let an African American be in an upscale grocery store buying lamb or quail and trying to check out with an African American cashier. Double jeopardy if the customer is an African American male and the cashier an African American female. It's a 50-50 chance that your bread

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

will be smashed, Bro.

The same goes for the service an African American male gets from another African American male. Triple jeopardy if the African American customer isn’t a mouth breather with sagging pants and Jordans on. You can ask this African American male racism tool a simple question. You will receive a look as if you were the lowest piece of feces on the planet. Yet, watch how this African

American male racism tool acts with any white person. It can be a white man with cow dung on his boots and poor as Joe’s turkey. This African American male racism tool will grin and speak politely. “Yes Sir! How may I help you? Oh, that’s on the other side of the store. I’ll walk you over there. Oh, it’s no problem. You want your shoes shined while we walk Boss?” I know. It is a sickening situation.

African Americans want racism to stop in the world. I’m here to tell you racism is not going anywhere. Racism will exist until African Americans can stop perpet-

uating acts of racism toward each other. Honestly, the root of the situation is African Americans have to stop being racist to the person in the mirror. The toning down of the African American male to appease white society and brain-washed African American females must stop. The racist act of sewing another race's hair onto your head. The pants worn under the curve of your behind that says, “I hate being a man.” The obesity levels that say, “I am committing suicide by trying to eat myself to death.”

If you are thinking, “Who is this Negro to be talking?” Or, “Don’t nobody care what he talking about. It’s just that black talk.” I ask, “Are you thinking in your voice or Ronald Reagan’s?”

Tiffany Tardy named New Executive Director of MPS Foundation

The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Foundation has chosen local education leader and MPS alum, Tiffany Tardy, as its new Executive Director.

Tardy’s background in educational and nonprofit leadership, combined with her passion for helping students of color, first-generation students, and limited-income students achieve higher education, make her the ideal person to build on MPS Foundation’s impact in the community. As Executive Director, she will lead fundraising efforts and have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the foundation’s staff and programs, and the execution of its mission to provide equitable opportunities for all MPS students and staff.

“This new opportunity is personal for me because I know how education changed my trajectory in life,” said Tardy. “I’ve seen firsthand how education can play a role in transform ing lives here in Milwaukee.

Through the MPS Foundation, it is my mission to help provide the same access to high-quality education to every student in our city.”

Tardy has more than 15 years of experience in higher education and nonprofit leadership and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education at Alverno College. She most recently served as the Managing Director of Programs for All-In Milwaukee – a coalition of education partners dedicated to increasing the pipeline of diverse talent in Milwaukee by helping limited-income, high-potential students graduate college.

The MPS Foundation plays a crucial role in Milwaukee’s education space operating as an independent 501c3 nonprofit and the vehicle

arships, immersive field trips, safe outdoor play spaces, basic school supplies, trauma care, art programming, STEM initiatives, and even funded a new library at Gaenslen School that opened just this year.

Ten ways to protect your brain

There is no time like the present. How we treat our brain now will ultimately determine how well it ages and whether or not we are at risk for dementia or stroke. So how do protect your brain from cognitive decline, you may ask? Well, one of the best ways to cut your risk is through lifestyle changes.

Two University of Michigan neurologists offer 10 tips for modifying those risks.

1. Keep blood pressure in check.

Dr. Judith Heidebrink, a neurologist who is co-leader of the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s Clinical Core, recommends aiming for a systolic blood pressure (the upper number) of 130 mm Hg or lower from around age 40. This helps reduce the risk of cognitive impairment, dementia, heart attack and stroke.

2. Guard your hearing. Wear ear protection around excessive noise to reduce the risk of hearing loss, center director Dr. Henry Paulson urged. Use hearing aids, if needed. A recent study found that older adults who got a hearing aid for their newly diagnosed hearing loss had a lower risk of dementia in the following three years, he pointed out.

3. Support efforts to reduce air pollution.

linking air pollution — such as the gases and small parti

cles emitted by cars and factories — to cognitive decline and dementia,” Heidebrink shared. “Encouragingly, sustained improvements in air quality appear to reduce the risk of dementia.”

4. Prevent head injuries. Wear proper gear when playing contact sports, including a helmet while biking. Don’t forget to use a seat belt in cars. Head injury can disrupt normal brain function. See a doctor right away if you think you have a concussion or traumatic brain injury.

5. Don’t smoke or drink to excess.

If you do smoke, quit, even if it’s later in life. And limit alcohol use. “It has long been known that alcohol misuse is associated with damage to the brain and an increased-

cohol consumption to one drink per day appears safest.”

6. Stay mentally engaged. Find something you enjoy, whether that’s taking a class locally or online, challenging your mind with puzzles and games, or starting a new hobby.

7. Socialize. Keeping up with friends and family is also helpful, Paulson said. Be social or

choose a social activity that is meaningful to you, such as volunteering or participating in community groups.

8. Eat right and exercise. Follow a heart-healthy diet and exercise throughout life, the doctors suggest. This includes a diet filled with fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. The Mediterranean diet is a good option. This can help guard against an unhealthy weight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, all of which are known to contribute to dementia. Get 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity throughout the week. A brisk walk or riding a stationary bike three times a week helps the brain work better.

9. Get good sleep. Quality sleep gives the brain a chance to lock in memories and gain the abil-

ity to learn new skills.

10. Take care of your mental health.

Physical activity can reduce stress. Social activities and hobbies can help prevent depression. See your doctor if you are concerned about your mental health.

Many dementia risk factors disproportionately affect ethnic minority groups, Heidebrink noted in a Michigan Medicine news release.

“In addition to taking steps as individuals to decrease our own dementia risk, we should take steps as a society to ensure that everyone has equitable access to an environment and resources that promote brain health,” she concluded.
