Milwaukee School Board recognizes Helen Wallace for Excellence in Education

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors honored Helen J. Wallace during their regular monthly board meeting at the Central Services Building Auditorium, 5225 West Vliet Street. Helen has the distinction of being the first African American woman to serve in the Office of the Superintendent. She was recruited by MPS in 1967 to serve as an assistant to the librarian at Rufus King High School. In 1975 she was offered the position as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. Helen was initially unsure if she should apply. Having recently lost her husband, Willie L. Wallace, Jr., she was not sure she could handle the increased responsibilities and continue to be a supportive mother to her two sons, Jerel, 12, and Maurice, 10. and stepdaughter Jana Williams. However, with encouragement and support of her family, she accepted the position. Helen she served under nine school superintendents as their administrative assistant until 2001, when the newly appointed superintendent brought in his own staff. Her final job title with MPS before retirement in 2002 was Administrative Assistant in the Office of Student Services. Now retired, Helen has devoted much of her free time to volunteer work with breast cancer survivors and traveling. On February 15, 2019, Helen was honored at the 34th Annual Black Excellence awards for Extraordinary Achievement.
CTSI and Pastors United host 2019 pastoral meeting to spread the word about early learning phone app Vroom On Thursday, February 21, 2019, the Clinical and Translation Science Institute (CTSI) of Southeast Wisconsin, in partnership with the Herzfeld Foundation and Pastors United, hosted their 2019 Spring Pastoral Meeting at the Medical College of Wisconsin Kerrigan Auditorium, 8701 Watertown Plank Road. The purpose of the meeting was to get local pastors on board with helping to promote early learning for Milwaukee's youth with the new Vroom app. Vroom is a set of tools and resources from the Bezos Family Foundation designed to inspire families to turn everyday moments into “brain building moments” by layering activities that are essential to healthy brain development onto existing routines. Milwaukee Bucks honor former player and general manager Wayne Embry

On Thursday, February 21, 2019, the Milwaukee Bucks honored former Bucks player and general manager Wayne Embry (center) before their evening game against the Boston Celtics at the Fiserv Forum. The City of Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin recognized Embry for his accomplishments and impact on NBA history by proclaiming Thursday Wayne Embry Day. Embry played the final season of his NBA career with the Bucks during their inaugural 1968-69 season. In his 11-year playing career, Embry was a five-time NBA All-Star and won an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics in 1968. Embry went on to become the first African American general manager in NBA history, serving in that role with the Bucks from 1972-79. Embry was presented with proclamations by Mayor Tom Barrett (left) and Bucks and Fiserv Forum President Peter Feigin (right) and flanked by two of the Milwaukee Bucks Dancers.
