Milwaukee School Board recognizes Helen Wallace for Excellence in Education

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors honored Helen J. Wallace during their regular monthly board meeting at the Central Services Building Auditorium, 5225 West Vliet Street. Helen has the distinction of being the first African American woman to serve in the Office of the Superintendent. She was recruited by MPS in 1967 to serve as an assistant to the librarian at Rufus King High School. In 1975 she was offered the position as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. Helen was initially unsure if she should apply. Having recently lost her husband, Willie L. Wallace, Jr., she was not sure she could handle the increased responsibilities and continue to be a supportive mother to her two sons, Jerel, 12, and Maurice, 10. and stepdaughter Jana Williams. However, with encouragement and support of her family, she accepted the position. Helen she served under nine school superintendents as their administrative assistant until 2001, when the newly appointed superintendent brought in his own staff. Her final job title with MPS before retirement in 2002 was Administrative Assistant in the Office of Student Services. Now retired, Helen has devoted much of her free time to volunteer work with breast cancer survivors and traveling. On February 15, 2019, Helen was honored at the 34th Annual Black Excellence awards for Extraordinary Achievement.

Judge Andrew Jones commits to strengthen public trust Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Jones is committed to ensuring that his time on the bench only strengthens the public’s trust in our courts. “Trial court judges are absolutely central to the functioning of our legal system. They need to be efficient and effective in handling and resolving the many kinds of cases that come before them. But, more importantly, they need to be independent, they need to be fair, and they always need to faithfully and equally apply the law to everyone who appears before them,” Jones said. Having practiced as a trial and appellate lawyer at every level of the state and federal court systems for more than 24 years, Jones believes he was in a position over those many years to learn what makes a judge a good judge, one parties and their lawyers respect and welcome the opportunity to appear before, regardless of the nature of their case.

Judge Andrew Jones According to Jones: “In my observation, good judges are always prepared, having done the hard work to be ready to hear a case. Good judges are open-minded and ready to listen. Good judges are respectful of the lawyers and parties who appear before them, recognizing how important every dispute is to the parties involved. Good judges are never result-oriented, and they instead handle each case based solely on the facts presented and the

applicable law.” “Parties need to be able to rely on the fact that when they come before a judge, the law will be enforced and applied as it is written.” But, Jones also emphasized, “the people of this community also need to know and be able to rely on the fact that the law will be applied equally to everyone, without exception.” Born and raised in Milwaukee, Jones’ legal education and career presented him with numerous opportunities to prepare for his service on the bench. From his work with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund as a law student, to his work handling complex cases on behalf of the City of New York and public and private clients here in Wisconsin, to his service on the boards of directors of two major law firms, the arm of the Milwaukee Bar Association that

The loneliness epidemic (Week 2)

“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.” - Psalm 25:6

identified by experts regarding loneliness. The symptoms of loneliness In the book, #Loneliness: The Virus of the Modern Age Selmi reported, when polled as part of a 1984 questionnaire, respondents most frequently reported having three close confidants. When the question was asked again in 2004, the most common response was zero confidants. Imagine the figures if this research was conducted today. This trend is unfortunate, since experts believe that it is not the quantity of social interaction that combats loneliness, but it is the quality of human connection. In other words, having thousands of friends on Facebook won’t cut it, but having just 3 or 4 close friends is enough to ward off loneliness and reduce the negative health consequences associated with this state of mind. (#Loneliness: The Virus of the Modern Age, Tony J. Selmi, Balboa Press, Jan. 2016).

Loneliness has been around since the time of human existence; however, lately research has soured on the issue of loneliness and thus has increased the attention on this subject. Let’s first get some sense of the magnitude of the loneliness epidemic, then conclude with the peak time periods for loneliness. In a May 2018 U.S. News and World Report article reported that health insurer CIGNA found on the US Loneliness Index 46 percent of Americans report feeling lonely sometimes or always and 47 percent, report feeling left out sometimes or always. A little less, 43 percent report feeling isolated from others, and the same number report feeling they lack companionship and their relationships lack meaning. CIGNA calls those “epidemic levels.” There are certain symptoms

Peak time periods for loneliness Another U.S. News and World Report entitled: “3 in 4 Americans Struggle with Loneliness” (Dec. 2018) identified 3 peak time periods for loneliness according to Jeste and his colleagues using a 20-point loneliness scale developed at the University of California (UCLA). • The late 20s when people are making choices that will affect the rest of their lives, such as their career, their choice of a life partner and where they will settle. This can really be a lonely time especially when one begins comparing themselves to others and begins feeling they aren’t doing as well as their peers. • The mid-50s is a time when people are experiencing the mid-life crisis as

signs of aging highlight the fact that their time on earth is limited. They see some of their friends dying and sometimes family members and they become aware more so of their own mortality. • The late 80s is a peak time period as it is a time of increased helplessness. Half of people at this age have dementia and their physical abilities are in decline. Often, they have lost their spouse and don’t have many people left around, either family or friends. Beloved, the U.S. News and World Report article went on to say additional factors that affect feelings of loneliness include time spent with family, sleep, employment and physical activity. Respondents who say they spend the right amount of time with their families, are well-rested, don’t feel overworked and get enough physical activity have lower loneliness scores. The bottom line is there are many lonely souls right in our midst. Pray for oppor-

tunities to reach out to the lonely souls in your corner of the world in an effort to lessen the burden of loneliness and thus assist in stemming the tide on the loneliness epidemic. FBI adopts Parkside School to promote excellence Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents and staff members have begun paying regular visits to Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts as part of the FBI Adopta-School program. This nationwide initiative builds relationships and trust between youth and law enforcement. The FBI Milwaukee Division worked with the MPS Department of Strategic Partnerships & Customer Service team in designating Parkside School for the Adopt-aSchool program, which will run February 26 through April 30, 2019.

Throughout the program, FBI representatives will visit the school and talk to students about the history and mission of the FBI, reinforce basic academic principles, help students practice responsible behavior, train students on Internet safety, and encourage kids to focus on school and stay away from drugs and violence. Michelle Sutphin, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Milwaukee Division of the FBI, joined Dr. Toni Dinkins, Interim Regional Superintendent of MPS, to launch the program for middle school students on February 26.

“Partnership programs have a great track record of improving achievement in the district,” said Dr. Keith P. Posley, MPS superintendent. “Students are capti-

Why are some women opting for total mastectomy as breast cancer prevention? If you watch the hit TV show on Bravo, Married to Medicine, you should be all too familiar with the newest cast member to the show, Dr. Contessa Metcalfe. In a recent episode, the black occupational and preventive medicine doctor openly shared her journey to preventing breast cancer as her mother passed away from the disease and her father is currently battling prostate cancer. Knowing that breast cancer runs deep within her family, she opted to undergo the elective surgery of a double (total) mastectomy. As never being diagnosed with breast cancer herself, it seems a bit drastic, but there are real pros to this prevention method. According to Cancer.gov, read why this underused option may be worth it after all: There are two surgical options. Technically, there are two kinds of surgeries that can be performed to reduce the risk of breast cancer in a woman who has never been diagnosed with breast cancer but is known to be at very high risk of the disease. 1. The most common risk-reducing surgery

is bilateral prophylactic mastectomy (also called bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy). Bilateral prophylactic mastectomy may involve complete removal of both breasts, including the nipples (total mastectomy), or it may involve removal of as much breast tissue as possible while leaving the nipples intact (subcutaneous or nipple-sparing mastectomy). Subcutaneous mastectomies preserve the nipple and allow for more natural-looking breasts if a woman chooses to have breast reconstruction surgery afterward. However, total mastectomy provides the greatest breast cancer risk reduction because more breast tissue is removed in this procedure than in a subcutaneous mastectomy. Even with total mastectomy, not all breast tissue that may be at risk of becoming cancerous in the future can be removed. The chest wall, which is not typically removed during a mastectomy, may contain some breast tissue, and breast tissue can sometimes be found in the armpit, above the collarbone, and as far down as the abdomen and it is impossible for a surgeon to remove all of this

tissue. 2. The other kind of risk-reducing surgery is bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy, which is sometimes called prophylactic oophorectomy. This surgery involves removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes and may be done alone or along with bilateral prophylactic mastectomy in premenopausal women who are at very high risk of breast cancer. Removing the ovaries in premenopausal women reduces the amount of estrogen that is produced by the body. Because estrogen promotes the growth of some breast cancers, reducing the amount of this hormone in the body by removing the

ovaries may slow the growth of those breast cancers. 3. Studies have shown it to be highly effective in reducing cancer risks. Bilateral prophylactic mastectomy has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer by at least 95 percent in women who have a deleterious (disease-causing) mutation in the BRCA1 gene or the BRCA2 gene and by up to 90 percent in women who have a strong family history of breast cancer (2-5). Bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy has been shown to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by approximately 90 percent and the risk of breast cancer by approximately 50 percent in women at very high risk of developing these diseases. 4. It inherently may be the better choice according to your family genes

and history. Women who inherit a deleterious mutation in the BRCA1 gene or the BRCA2 gene or mutations in certain other genes that greatly increase the risk of developing breast cancer may consider having bilateral prophylactic mastectomy and/or bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy to reduce this risk. In two studies, the estimated risks of developing breast cancer by age 70 years were 55 to 65 percent for women who carry a deleterious mutation in the BRCA1 gene and 45 to 47 percent for women who carry a deleterious mutation in the BRCA2 gene. Estimates of the lifetime risk of breast cancer for women with Cowden syndrome, which is caused by certain mutations in the PTEN gene, range from 25 to 50 percent or higher, and for women with Li-Fraumeni syndrome, which is caused by certain mutations in the TP53 gene, from 49 to 60 percent. (By contrast, the lifetime risk of breast cancer for the average American woman is about 12 percent.) Those with a strong family history of breast cancer (such as having a mother, sister, and/or daughter who was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer or with breast cancer before age 50 years or (Continued on pg. 14)

Celebrating

Women's History Month This is how March became 'Women's History Month' Many things have come to womankind surprisingly recently: The right to vote. The right to own property. And, perhaps less surprisingly, the existence of Women’s History Month. Before women had the whole month, the U.S. recognized Women’s History Week; before that, a single International Women’s Day. Dedicating the whole month of March in honor of women’s achievements may seem irrelevant today. But at the time of the conception of Women’s History Week, activists saw the designation as a way to revise a written and social American history that had largely ignored women’s contributions. The celebratory month has its roots in the socialist and labor movements — the first Women’s Day took place on Feb. 28, 1909, in New York City, as a national observance organized by the Socialist Party. It honored the oneyear anniversary of the garment worker’s strikes in New York that had taken place a year earlier, when thousands of women marched for economic rights through lower Manhattan to Union Square. (That strike in turn honored an earlier 1857 march, when

President Jimmy Carter signs document at the White House in Washington on Feb. 28, 1980, proclaiming March 2-8 "National Women's History Week." garment workers rallied for equal rights and a 10-hour day.) Within two years, Women’s Day had grown into an international observance that spread through Europe on the heels of socialism. Meanwhile, in the U.S., feminist activists took issue with how the history books largely left out the story or contributions of women in America. In light of that imbalance, one group during the 1970s set about revising the school curriculum in Sono-

ma County, CA, according to the National Women’s History Project. Their idea was to create a “Women’s History Week” in 1978, timed around International Women’s Day, which the U.N. had begun officially marking in 1975. The observance spread to schools around the county, and grew into a cause for celebration. Organizers held an annual “Real Women” essay contest, hundreds of women took part by giving presentations to students in their

classrooms and the whole week culminated in a Santa Rosa, CA parade. In 1979, Molly Murphy MacGregor, one of the week’s organizers, traveled to Sarah Lawrence College in New York for a conference with the Women’s History Institute. The participants heard about the week in Sonoma County, and the celebration soon spread across the country.

Recipes From My Mother

By: Lynda Jackson Conyers

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, girls were expected to help prepare supper for the family. My Mom was a great cook and a very religious woman. She took pride in preparing meals for the family, special events and church activities. She was always called on to prepare a dish for a family member or a friend. She never charged a dime. Cooking was her ministry. To this day, people walk up to me and asked the question. Can you cook like your mother? To be a great cook, you sort of have to be a scientist. When baking a cake or preparing a meal, Mom never measured anything. She eyeballed all her ingredients. In the following four weeks, I will share recipes from my personal cookbook I have created in honor of my Mom, Beulah.

Gerda Lerner chaired the Institute at the time of the conference, and backed the movement to garner national recognition. As the week picked up steam, organizers lobbied Congress and President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first national Women’s History Week for March 2-8, 1980. “Women’s history is women’s right—an essential, indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long range vision,” Lerner was quoted saying in Carter’s proclamation. President Ronald Reagan passed further proclamations announcing Women’s History Weeks, but by then some areas had already extended their celebrations for a month. The Women’s National History Project lobbied for a longer observation, and Congress passed a proclamation in 1987 establishing Women’s History Month. Now, presidents pass annual proclamations announcing Women’s History Month, and the National Women’s History Project declares a theme each year. The 2018 theme is “Nevertheless, She Persisted.”

IN A SEPARATE BOWL, beat butter and shortening at high speed with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, approximately 6 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to medium. Add sugar gradually. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Set aside. IN A MEASURING CUP OR SMALL BOWL, combine buttermilk and extracts. ADD flour mixture to butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk mixture and beginning and ending with flour mixture. Pour

Celebrating

Women's History Month Diversity sails forward: Introducing Captain Belinda Bennett, first Black, female ship’s master A fitting bit of news for March – introducing Captain Belinda Bennett. In addition to being the first female and black captain in Windstar Cruises' history, she is the first black female captain in the commercial cruise industry. An exclusive handful of women are currently making waves as captains, with the first American female captain tapped just less than a year ago to helm a mega-cruise ship. And for a bit of perspective: the first female of any nationality/ethnicity appointed to command a major cruise ship occurred just over a decade ago in 2007! As captain, Bennett is responsible for directing the operations and activities of officers and crew members on-board, including: safety, maintenance, certification, documentation, passenger services and compliance with multi-government regulations. As guests who have sailed with us know, our captains are highly accessible operating under our open bridge policy, and Bennett is known for being sociable and engaging with Windstar

Capt. Belinda Bennett yacht guests. “We are thrilled to have appointed Belinda as Windstar’s first-ever female captain and we understand may be the cruise industry’s first-ever black captain. Belinda’s leadership qualities and hard work have made her an asset to our team and invaluable to her colleagues and crew,” said John Delaney, Windstar Cruises President. “She has earned her spot at the helm and I’m excited to see her in action, guiding the crew and our guests on Windstar through some of the world’s most incredible destinations for years to come.” Bennett, 40, is a British

citizen and resides in Southampton, United Kingdom when she is not aboard Windstar Cruises. Her maiden voyage as captain set sail on January 30, 2016, with 102 international crew aboard the 148-passenger Windstar cruising in the Caribbean. Bennett is preparing to captain Windstar’s trans-Atlantic sailing from the Caribbean to Europe. Her new job will keep Bennett busy at sea into May, at which time she intends to enjoy a brief break before returning for Windstar’s summer season in the Aegean Sea, offering a series of 24 consecutive Greek Isles cruises.

THE PUBLISHER'S BOOKSHELF

We were able to catch Bennett amidst one of her busy days at sea to get to know her a little better. Read on to find out more! What did you want to be when you were little? I wanted to be a marine biologist in my younger years. I guess I always had a passion for the sea! What qualities must someone possess to become a good cruise ship captain? You have to be a good communicator – able to both talk and listen. You also need to be visible to both guests and the crew. What are your three top priorities as master of Windstar? That my guests and crew are safe, with the guests having an enjoyable, memorable time onboard our yacht. I also want to ensure the crew are happy and content – only then can they provide the best service to our guests. What are your three favorite ports-of-call and why? Just three? I so love the Dalmatian coast. The Croatian coastline and ports are beautiful! And for anyone who has sailed with me,

they know I have a particular affinity for Sorrento in Italy, where I have a personal traditional of buying Italian leather handbags. You’ll notice the word “handbags” is plural. I also enjoy sailing to Bequia in the Caribbean, where my favorite spot is Mac’s Pizzeria for a slice of delicious lobster pizza. In Portoferraio in Elba, you can find me eating the best gelato on the planet. How does a guest get to have dinner with you at the Captain’s table? Sail on Windstar several times! Repeat guests are normally invited to dine at the Captain’s Table, and I love meeting Windstar guests at this special tradition. What is your best advice for first time cruisers? Disregard the notion that cruising is for the more mature community. There are some fabulous places that cruise ships like Windstar call at whereby you get to see multiple cities and islands you would not normally see by staying in one place. The activities and adventures cruising offers rival those offered by land-based resorts.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Don't underestimate the power of optimism Optimistic people fare better in interviews all other things being equal. That is the simple truth. Most people like people who have optimism, so long as it isn’t exaggerated and overblown simply for effect. Optimism and smiles tend to go together. So there is a double-whammy in the package of a person interviewing for a position who is both optimistic and who has a ready smile; those people usually will have a better experience sometimes because they expected to have a better experience. If we are self-confident without being overbearing, and we couple that with optimism and a sense of humor, the odds are in our favor if we have the work-related quali-

This combination is sort of the ‘holy grail’ for prospective employers, or the trifecta that simply doesn’t present itself too often. However, doctors often discourage contralateral prophylactic mastectomy for women with cancer in one breast who do not meet the criteria of being at very high risk of developing contralateral breast cancer. For such women, the risk of developing another breast cancer, either in the same or the contralateral breast, is
