Lowell International Elementary School celebrates 'Read Across America'

Senator Tammy Baldwin opens Milwaukee campaign office

On Friday, March 2, 2018, Lowell International Elementary School celebrated "Read Across America," at their school located at 4360 South 20th Street. Each year the National Education Association sponsors a nationwide reading event to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and to promote reading to children. Each school invites local guest celebrities, politicians, athletes and other volunteers to read at their school. This year Lowell invited local Fox6 Now news anchor Ted Perry (upper photo, center) and chair of the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission Board Steve DeVougas (inset photo, right) to read to their students. This year's theme was "A Bed Time Story," and all the students in the classes were encouraged to dress in their pajamas. The event was coordinated by Lowell International Elementary School's Support Teacher/IB Coordinator Morgan A. Conyers (inset photo, left). The school's principal is Pandora Bedford.

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was joined by special guest Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) at the opening of the Milwaukee office for her 2018 Senate campaign. The office, located at 5040 West North Ave., is not far from the city's Sherman Park neighborhood. Baldwin's campaign manager Scott Spector called the office opening "the first of many major investments we plan to make in Milwaukee to engage, organize and turn out voters in every community here." Both Baldwin and Booker spoke with attendees at the opening.

Veteran's Association looking for participants in new Alzheimer's study Dr. Cindy Carlsson, a geriatrics provider at the William S. Middleton Memorial Hospital and a researcher in the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in Madison, is seeking volunteers for an 18-month study on Alzheimer’s disease. Participants must meet all of the following requirements: • Be a veteran eligible for VA services • Possess normal memory and thinking • Be between the age 50-75 • And a parental history of Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to triple to 15 million by the year 2050. Dr. Carlsson works with and studies Alzheimer’s among the veteran population, who for a number of reasons some of which are still not entirely understood, are far more likely to develop the condition than the general population. Age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, although numerous studies also indicate a racial gap in Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of demen-

Dr. Cindy Carlsson tia. African Americans are twice as likely and Hispanics one-and-a-half times as likely to develop the disease as whites. The new study by Dr. Carlsson will seek to determine whether fish oil supplements favorably alter early brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease by improving blood flow to the brain. The study will require nine visits spread over 18 months at the William S. Middleton Memorial Hospital and the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

“Alzheimer’s disease is devastating,” Dr. Carlsson said. “The health and science communities are working on treating this disease on many fronts, from drugs and treatments that stop and reverse the disease, to lifestyle changes like diet and exercise that help delay the onset of symptoms. The BRAVEEPS study is looking at another possible intervention – utilizing a supplement we know is safe and has hearthealth benefits and determining if it can contribute to slowing the disease in veterans with a family risk for the disease.” Those interested in participating or learning more about the study are encouraged to contact the study coordinator, Elena Beckman either by telephone 608-2561901 (ext. 11199) or email elena.beckman@va.gov. reidsgoldengate.com • ggfuneralhome@sbcglobal.net

Being Frank Spring break is upon us. Spring break is a time where students and teachers take a break from studying or teaching. Many college students go on trips to exotic places. Teachers use this time to plan lessons and prepare for the final quarter of school. The result from spring break is that the final quarter of school goes by quick and usually efficiently. It’s time for everyone to follow the example education has set and take a Spring Break. The country has been in shock since the events that took place in Florida in February. The tragic school shooting that took so many lives has paralyzed the country. There has been everything from prayer vigils to protests. People have blamed everything from lack of gun control to teacher incompetence in the classroom for the tragedy. The louder people shout indignities the more paranoid other people become. The paranoia that the recent Florida tragedy has created can engulf the USA if unchecked. This is why the people of the USA need a Spring Break. A break from the sorrow, pain and fear the Florida shooting has created is mandatory. The reaction from the shooting has created much sorrow across the country. People from every state in the Union shared in the sad-

ness that came from Nikolas Cruz’s actions. It is time for everyone in the USA to take a break. Even before Cruz’s rampage, people in America needed a break from sorrow. With this event in mind, the people of the USA definitely need a Spring Break. Pain is something everyone in the USA deals with. Most people have their own daily dose of pain to deal with. The Florida shooting has heaped an extra helping of pain for Americans to deal with. Pain is helpful to help the doctor figure out an ailment. The pain that Americans are carrying today is useless and needs to be put aside. A nice Spring Break would enable people to remember that life is still grand and worth living. Fear is the worse result from the events that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Fear has permeated every level of life in the world. When people become scared bad things

happen. Cruz’s murder spree has made students, teachers and parents seek increased security for the school building. There are calls for more student searches. There are also calls for armed teachers and other staff. The majority of these demands are the result of fear. People of this country have enough to worry about on a regular basis. More fear will push normally sane people into the insane realm. A nice Spring Break can cure and give people time to recalibrate themselves. The events that took place in Florida are not the only reasons Americans need a break. Recent events are a catalyst that can trigger changes and reform. In order to make the correct decisions and not knee jerk reactions, Americans need a break. America is in a state of flux. No longer can USA residents take their freedom or peace for granted. Before people start to buy weapons and put bars up on school windows, maybe everyone

On Sunday, February 25, 2018, Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church hosted its second special Black History Month event. This time the focus was on February as National Heart Disease and Stroke Awareness Month with a theme of "Heart Disease and Stroke: What it Means for African American Women." The special guest for this event was Wisconsin Well Woman Program Executive Director Gale Johnson. African American women are at a higher risk than other ethnic groups for suffering from heart disease or stroke, and the best defense is education and awareness. Guests were encouraged to show their support for women's heart health by wearing red to the morning service. Pictured are (from left) Gale Johnson; Zion Hill Pastor Russell B. Systems Thinking Institute brings unique learning opportunity A world leader in using systems thinking to provide exemplary professional development and improve student success, the Waters Foundation is proud to present the second-annual Milwaukee Systems Thinking Institute, March 14-16, 2018, held in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools. The Institute will appeal to anyone looking to create effective changes in their work and achieve desired outcomes using the habits and tools of systems thinking. From the classroom to the boardroom, there is something for everyone, including workshops focused on everything from classroom application to business strategy and more. The Waters Foundation has been working in Milwaukee Public Schools since 2014, coaching teachers, administrators and central services staff in systems thinking, with the goal of improving student performance and teacher efficiency.

"We are thrilled to once again showcase the outstanding work being done by Milwaukee Public Schools at our Systems Thinking Institute. MPS educators are preparing students to be complex problem-solvers who recognize positive changes they can make on the systems they are a part of," said Sheri Marlin, Chief Learning Officer of the Waters Foundation. The Institute will be held at Daniel Webster Secondary School, and several of the workshops and events offered will showcase the systems thinking work being done in the district. "Since we began working at MPS, we've seen student engagement in learning increase significantly. Watching students build confidence to think outside the box, ask tough questions, and develop innovative solutions to complex challenges is really what it's all about. These are the kinds of thinkers future employers will require and our communities will need," Marlin said.

"Our keynote speakers will cover everything from the role systems thinking plays in the mission to Mars, to decisions soldiers make on the battlefield, to creating solutions to social challenges such as youth homelessness and gun violence. "We really see systems thinking as critical to tackling some of our world's most complex issues, and I am excited for our keynote presentations to demonstrate this to Institute participants," remarked Marlin. Other partners of the Institute and workshop facilitators include the Urban Ecology Center, Learn Deep Milwaukee, and the Master of Sustainable Peacebuilding program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. "In addition to workshops, participants will have the opportunity to hear from incredible speakers whose insights will help broaden our perspectives - this is one of the key tenets of systems thinking," said Marlin.

Keynote speakers include Ricardo Valerdi, Associate Professor in the Systems & Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Arizona and SpaceX Engineer; Major Thomas Ryan, Infantry Officer for the U.S. Army and Assistant Professor in the Systems Engineering Department at the United States Military Academy at West Point; and college interns at the Social System Design Lab at Washington University in Saint Louis.

The Institute will also include a kick-off event the evening of March 14, which will feature a panel discussion among leaders in systems thinking, including Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver. For more information on the Systems Thinking Institute, or to register, please visit http://watersfoundation. org/systems-thinking-institute-2/travel-and-registration.

PrEP not reaching those who could potentially benefit from it the most A new CDC study suggests that only a small percentage of Americans who could potentially benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily pill for HIV prevention, have been prescribed it. In the first detailed analysis by race and by risk group, CDC researchers found while twothirds of those who could potentially benefit from PrEP are African American or Latino, these groups account for the smallest percentage of prescriptions to date. Key findings: • In 2015, there were approximately 1.1 million Americans who could potentially benefit from PrEP according to CDC guidelines, including: • 500,000 African Americans • 300,000 Latinos • 300,000 whites However, during a similar time period (September 2015 – August 2016), prescriptions filled at retail pharmacies or mail order services included as few as: • 7,000 for African Americans • 7,600 for Latinos • 42,000 for whites

Improving access to PrEP Although primary care providers are qualified to provide PrEP, an unpublished 2015 survey of US healthcare providers found that 34 percent had not heard of it, according to the report. While the survey suggests that two-thirds of providers are at least familiar with PrEP, that does not necessarily mean they are comfortable providing it, CDC principal deputy director Ann Schuchat told reporters. "The bottom line is doctors need more prep about PrEP." It has been difficult to get a handle on how many people have received PrEP to date. A survey covering about 40 percent of US pharmacies by Gilead Sciences found that more than 8500 individuals have been prescribed Truvada for PrEP since the beginning of 2012. However, this is an underestimate as it does not include peo-

ple receiving PrEP through clinical trials, demonstration projects, Medicaid (coverage for low-income individuals), Gilead's patient assistance program or non-reporting health facilities. Altogether, experts estimate that the total number of people on PrEP in the US may reach at least 25,000. Concerted efforts could substantially increase the number of people with access to PrEP, according to a second analysis also published in the November 27 edition of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Franklin Laufer and colleagues with the New York State Department of Health looked at changes in PrEP use after the governor adopted a plan to end the AIDS epidemic in June 2014. The plan includes an effort to increase knowledge about PrEP, train providers and ensure Medicaid coverage. Approximately 3000 new cases of HIV infection occur in New York State each year, the authors noted as background, and about a quarter of state residents are covered by Medicaid. The researchers found that the number of New York residents on Medicaid who filled prescriptions for Truvada for PrEP increased by more than 300 percent – or more than four-fold – rising from 259 between July 2012 and June 2013 and 303 between July 2013 and June 2014, to 1330 between July 2014 and June 2015. However, they added, "Although the increase in percentage of Medicaid recipients filling Truvada prescriptions for PrEP…is substantial, the number of persons doing so remains low relative to the number needed to treat in order to achieve the goals of New York state's Ending the AIDS Epidemic initiative."

Learning to spend within your means Spending within your means may sound like a simple rule to follow, but many Americans spend more than they save, which can result in debt. The good news is that it’s completely avoidable, and it’s reversible over time. With a little planning, tracking and adjusting your spending, you can live happily within your means. For a stronger financial future, here are a few tactics to start living within your means and building better spending habits. Create a budget. Making a budget simply means examining your income and expenditures in order to determine exactly how much money you have coming in and where you’re spending it. Once you've got a clear understanding of your current budget – what

You may find you save hundreds of dollars a month by reducing entertainment costs or frivolous purchases. The idea isn’t to stop enjoying your life, but to understand costs and prioritize expenses for a healthier savings account.

Tackle your debt. Many Americans owe money in the form of a student loan, a credit card or medical or consumer debt. It can take many years to pay off debt, but it’s important to live within your means and manage your debt load. Take the time to identify which of your loans have the highest interest rates and start paying them off first.

Consider professional counseling. If you are struggling and can’t get your spending under control, consider seeking qualified financial counseling. Organizations like the National Foundation for Credit Counseling® offer free financial education and counseling services to help Americans cultivate responsible personal finance habits. Or consider finding a free, certified financial counselor through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE), a nonprofit organization that aims to improve financial education for both financial counselors and clients. AFCPE’s online search tool can help you find the right advisor for your needs.

Four simple rules that self-made millionaires use for building wealth The wealthiest people focus on earning. "While world-class thinkers understand the importance of saving and investing, they direct their mental energy toward accumulating wealth through serving people and solving problems," writes self-made millionaire Steve Siebold in How Rich People Think, which he wrote after studying millionaires for more than 25 years. Here are four strategies to build wealth from self-made millionaires who have done it. 1. Develop multiple streams of income "You won't get rich without multiple flows of income," says self-made millionaire Grant Cardone, who was deep in debt before reaching seven figures. "That starts with the income you currently have. Increase that income and start adding multiple flows. "You want what are called symbiotic flows. Do not just add disconnected flows. Instead, find other ways you can add income to the job you already have. My video guy does advertising for me — and after proving himself, he started making advertisements for those connected to me. He didn't start a doughnut shop." 2. Invest your money — every single day In just five years, Grant of Millennial Money went from having $2.26 in his bank account to $1 million. On his blog, the 31-year-old selfmade millionaire shares "the single most important hack"

you earn a dollar, the first person you pay is you." Most people don't do this. "What most people do when they earn a dollar is pay everyone else first. They pay the landlord, the credit card company, the telephone

company, the government ...," Bach writes. They pay themselves whatever is left over. The key to paying yourself first is to make it automatic, meaning, to have money tak-

en out of your paycheck and sent straight to your savings, retirement or investment account. After all, "you can't spend what you don't have in your pocket," Bach said. (Continued on pg. 15)

Steve Siebold he's used to build wealth: "I break down ALL of my money goals into daily goals. I still deposit money every day into my investment accounts." He started with the goal of setting aside $50 a day. At first, "some days it was only $5, but I rarely missed a day," Grant says. "Then I started trying to make as much money as possible every day so I could invest it. I stopped thinking long term and thought every day about making that $50 threshold." His daily goal of $50 deposits soon became his daily minimum. He started setting aside "$70, then $80, then $100 dollars a day. … Then as my side hustles started really taking off I started depositing $500+ a day. ... Then I put $5,000 in a day, then $20,000, and the rest is history." 3. Pay yourself first According to self-made millionaire and bestselling author David Bach, there's "one, proven, easy way to get rich," and that is to pay yourself first. What that means is simple, Bach writes in The Automatic Millionaire: "When

Lynette DuPree: The voice behind ‘Black Pearl’ By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times There are some kids who grow up struggling to find an interest or talent that they can turn into a career. Lynette DuPree didn’t have that problem. She knew exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up; she wanted to be a performer. The veteran stage, television and film actress is currently in Milwaukee in the lead role of The Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of Black Pearl Sings!, staging now through March 18, 2018 at the Stackner Cabaret. DuPree has been performing practically from the time she could walk and talk. At age three, she performed in the Sunshine Choir at the church in Niagara Falls, NY, where her father was the pastor. She went on to sing and act in many local productions put on by both her church and school. By age 13, she was able to attend a performing arts develop-

ment workshop sponsored by gospel great Edwin Hawkins. Under Hawkins’ tutelage, DuPree polished her vocal styling and stage presence. Then came the hard part; that is, convincing her parents that as a teenager she had found her calling. “At first, they were reluctant to let me go out into the world of performing,” DuPree said. "When they discovered that I really was serious about acting as a career, they supported me in achieving my dream.” That dream took DuPree to New York City, where she landed starring roles in many off-Broadway productions, such as Generations for Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Jr., and Mama, I Want to Sing. Next came regional theater, and roles in such classic plays as Elmer Gantry and Ain’t Misbehavin’. She

play based on the life of gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. Wanting to expand her repertoire and opportunities as a working actor, DuPree moved to Los Angeles and began doing television, film, and voice-over work, in addition to theater. Her resume includes guest roles in such popular programs as Law and Order, Everybody Hates Chris, Fresh Off The Boat, The Goldbergs, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. Her film credits include Their Eyes Were Watching God and Random Hearts. She currently has a recurring role voicing the Lynette DuPree character of ‘MaTembo’ the elephant in the considers her “big break” beDisney series, The Lion Guard, ing cast as ‘Effie’, the talenta sequel to The Lion King. ed but troubled singer in the DuPree stated that she national touring company of finds a common thread Dreamgirls. She also landed among these various perforroles in Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk and Truly Blessed, a mance platforms. For her,

“it’s all about touching the audience and moving them emotionally. Whether it’s a guest spot or a recurring role on television, or a part in a theater production, a comedy or a dramatic part, I’m constantly adding elements to bring out the nuances and personality of the character and their role in advancing the story,” she said. When she’s not acting on the stage or in front of the camera, DuPree still finds time to get back to her roots in music. She leads The Divas of Soul, a group of six Los Angeles-based women from various creative professions who sing together to raise funds for various causes. I thought no one would ever make this movie. But I kept coming back to it because I knew that if someone let me make this movie, that people would hear it and people would see it.” Peele made history as the first black writer to ever win in the category. He also earned nominations for best director and best picture, making him the third person ever to have their directorial debut appear in all three categories.
