Marquette President offers new President's challenge to improve Milwaukee's central-city neighborhoods Marquette University President Mike Lovell, in partnership with the Johnson Controls Foundation, unveiled a new $250,000 initiative to break the cycle of poverty, crime and joblessness in a Milwaukee neighborhood by addressing one or more of the critical areas in which neighborhood inequities exist, including health, education, safety, housing, transportation and economic prosperity. The initiative was unveiled during two community information sessions on March 6, 2018. The new initiative, to be called Marquette University President’s Challenge, comes with an unusual requirement: the program seeks to pair activists from some of “Milwaukee’s most
challenging neighborhoods” to submit their own ideas, working in partnership with Marquette faculty members as well as not-for-profit and social agencies to prepare grant proposals. The winning grant proposal will receive $125,000 in grant money for
sentation at Neighborhood House Milwaukee on Tuseday, March 6, 2018. “We felt the more restrictive we made it, the harder it would be for people to access. We want to create sustainable solutions that can change lives.” In order to submit a proposal for consideration, applicants must be represented by, at minimum, a five-person team. Each team must be comprised of: at least one faculty member from Staff Photo each of the following areas: two years. Sherman Phoenix nearing campaign goal, $1 million away Sherman Phoenix, a model for healing our city and building community, is nearing its $3.5 million campaign goal. With the help of more than 100 investors and donors, $2.5 million has been raised to fund Sherman Phoenix. Currently, $1 million more is needed before the building can be completed. Once completed, Sherman Phoenix will house 17+ small businesses, which will contribute 75+ new jobs in the neighborhood. To further encourage entrepreneurship in communities of color, Sherman Phoenix will also provide mentorship and coaching for tenants who have signed to be part of the project. The full list of current tenants is on Sherman Phoenix’s new website that launched this week: www. shermanphoenix.com. In 2016, violent unrest broke out in the Sherman Park neighborhood of Milwaukee after a fatal police shooting rocked the community. In the weeks following, community conversations
Spearheading the project is Milwaukee developer Juli Kaufmann and local entrepreneur Joanne Johnson-Sabir, who looked at the remnants of the burned down bank branch as a way to quite literally rebuild community. identified the need for safe, welcoming neighborhood spaces, and certain leaders in the community decided to take matters into their own hands in order to foster change. In the hope of moving forward, the idea for the Sherman Phoenix was born. The Sherman Phoenix will transform the fire-damaged BMO Harris Bank building located at the eastern gateway to the Sherman Park neighborhood into high-quality space for small businesses-of-color offering diverse foods, wellness services and cultural activities. Updates to the neighborhood will include much-needed community spaces to curate art exhibits, film showings, and cultural events.

"The power for this project not only comes from donations, but also from the people and the tenants who have joined this movement," said Joanne Sabir, co-owner of The Juice Kitchen and the co-founder of Sherman Phoenix. “The overall commitment to the betterment of this neighborhood has blown us away.” Donations to reach the campaign goal are currently being accepted online at www.shermanphoenix.com/ donate. Additionally, there is still tenant space available for interested businesses. For more information on the movement, contact Sherman Phoenix leadership at 262.228.6021 or info@shermanphoenix.com.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Lovell said his idea was to encourage as many new solutions and teams as possible. Even those teams that do not receive the funding will benefit in learning how to research, prepare and write grant proposals which can be submitted to other foundations and philanthropic institutions, Bergen said in response to an audience member question.

Women’s History Month (Week Three) “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less.” - Susan B. Anthony March is Women’s History Month. Wikipedia defines Women’s History Month as an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. There are so many amazing women throughout history who have made a significant impact on behalf of women rights, freedom and equality. This month, this column is highlighting some of the contributions of women in history. It is this writer’s prayer that you will share these articles with the young people in your life to encourage and inspire them to go on and do great things! Susan B. Anthony (18201906) Susan B. Anthony was a suffragist, abolitionist, author and speaker, who served as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts and worked as a teacher until she went on to become a leading
figure in the abolitionist and women’s voting rights movements and worked to end slavery. Anthony’s most notable work is her fight for a woman’s right to vote. It began when Anthony and her family were part of the temperance movement, which wanted the production and sale of alcohol limited or stopped completely. Anthony was inspired to fight for women’s rights while campaigning against alcohol. She was denied the chance to speak at a temperance convention because she was a woman. Anthony realized no one would take women in politics seriously unless women were given the right to vote. Anthony worked tirelessly for this basic right for women. She died in 1906
and women were still not allowed to vote; however, Anthony’s work paved the way for the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Anthony’s work and dedication also led to the U.S. Treasury Department placing Anthony’s portrait on one dollar coins in 1979, making her the first woman to be so honored.1
Rhode Island, oftentimes she didn’t know where her next meal was coming from. Contending with a lot of racial prejudice as a child, and being teased by other classmates because of her race, Viola became the first African American woman to win an Emmy Award for best actress, noting the only thing separating women of color from anyone else is opportunity.

Green Bay Packers GiveBack to MPS
Milwaukee Public Schools will install a synthetic sports turf surface at Casimir Pulaski Stadium in Milwaukee, thanks in part to a $250,000 grant from the Green Bay Packers through the National Football League Foundation Grassroots Program. The grant from the Packers, the NFL Foundation, and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is part of more than $3 million in field refurbishment awards allocated this year. This is the 16th grant secured by the Packers since 1998 for Wisconsin organizations working on new or renovated athletic fields and
stadiums, with the cumulative total now at $2.36 million. The NFL Foundation/ LISC Grassroots Program, a partnership between the NFL Foundation and LISC, the nation’s leading community development support organization, has committed nearly $46 million to the program since 1998, supporting 336 projects nationwide. Fields are newly built or significantly renovated, with improvements including irrigation systems, lights, bleachers, scoreboards, goal posts and turf. Grassroots grants are issued once established funding thresholds are reached for each project. “We are grateful for the support of the Green Bay Packers, the NFL Foundation and LISC to the young people and student athletes of Milwaukee Public Schools,” said MPS Superintendent Darienne Driver. “Pulaski Stadium is a high use field

and having a synthetic turf field will allow greater access and safer use for our young people.” LISC identifies local, nonprofit, community-based agencies that have an interest in building or refurbishing football fields in schools and neighborhood parks. Through the program, local agencies are provided with the necessary financing and technical assistance to improve the quality and safety of fields in their communities. The agencies oversee the construction, maintenance and programming of the fields. “LISC is pleased to partner with the Green Bay Packers and the NFL in bringing this remarkable resource to our city that will benefit Milwaukee’s young people now and for generations to come,” said Donsia Strong-Hill, Executive Director of Milwaukee LISC.

Where are they now: New Year resolutions, let’s get back to them! We’re three months into the new year and if you’ve already given up on achieving your new year resolutions, don’t worry- you’re not alone. As a matter of fact, according to U.S. News, 80 percent of resolutions fail by the second week of February, so it’s pretty rare that the odds are in your favor, anyway. However, just because your new year resolutions may not have made it through the winter season, doesn’t mean you have to give up and push them off in the hopes of tackling them next year – you still have 9 months left in 2018 to make things happen. Start simple and small If you want to go to the gym in order to get in better shape, try setting the intention of going to the gym three or four days a week instead of saying you’ll go to the gym every day. If you want to go on a diet or eat healthier, introduce yourself to healthy alternatives such as replacing ice cream with yogurt, instead of completely throwing out food that you eat on a regular basis. Donald Trump advocates death penalty for drug dealers in rambling speech Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts – whom he called “Pocahontas” – on behalf of Hillary Clinton for being “so angry”. He also dwelled at length on his victory in the electoral college. Looking forward, Trump announced his 2020 campaign slogan would be “Keep America great” since he had already “made America great again”. He also took credit for a congressional special election win by Republican Karen Handel in a suburban district where Trump was deliberately kept away for fear country is ready but I think it’s a discussion we have to start thinking about.” It marked Trump’s most explicit public statements on the topic, although he previously praised Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who is leading a campaign of alleged extrajudicial killings against drug dealers and users. In the aftermath of the shock announcement that Trump would meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, he touched upon his relationship with the man he once publicly derided as “little Rocket Man.” Trump chided the crowd when they started go boo Kim, saying “we have to be very nice” ahead of the scheduled summit. He went to attack his predecessors for not meeting with Kim and said his meeting would be a great accomplishment and had forced concessions from “a man who is nuked up all over the place”. As Trump described it: “They announce they’re not sending any missiles up … I wouldn’t say Japan was thrilled with missiles flying over Japan.” In Trump’s telling, South Korea’s President Moon Jaein told him: “Without Donald Trump, the Olympics would have been a total failure.” He then opined: “It’s a little hard to sell tickets when you think you’re going to be nuked.” In addition to the coming special election, Trump looked back to the 2016 election where he derided a speech made by Senator
of alienating moderate Republican voters. As Trump often does, he went on several tirades about the media. He derided NBC news host Chuck Todd as “a sleepy son of a bitch”; called CNN “fake as hell”; and vented about a Wall Street Journal columnist, calling him “a Neanderthal”. But one unusual target of his ire was Ronald Reagan. The 40th president is a venerated figure among Republicans, but Trump criticized his predecessor as “not great on trade”.

In a campaign stop three days before a crucial special election for Congress, Donald Trump advocated the death penalty for drug dealers in the course of an hourlong rambling campaign style speech where he bashed television anchors, unveiled his re-election slogan and discussed nuclear arms negotiations with North Korea. He also mentioned the Republican candidate whom he endorsed. Speaking to a crowd of supporters in a packed airplane hangar outside of Pittsburgh on Saturday,March 10, 2018, Trump gave one of his trademark speeches including a rare imitation where he feigned what it would be like to act “presidential”. The event was held to support Republican Rick Saccone, who is neck and neck with Democrat Conor Lamb in a congressional district that Trump won by more than 20 points in the 2016 election. Trump praised Saccone saying “he knows things other people don’t know” and bashed the Democratic candidate as “Lamb the Sham”. He also discussed the physical attractiveness of both candidates. Trump said of the 33-year-old Lamb “I hear he’s nice looking, I think I’m better looking” and then followed up by saying Saccone “is handsome too”. But Trump spent most of his hour and 20 minutes on stage talking about almost every other topic under the sun. He confirmed reports that that he had been floating the idea of imposing a death penalty on drug dealers by a long discourse where he praised the criminal justice system in China. Trump noted China once had a problem with “the opium” that was “devastating” and went on to explain his bafflement that murderers were treated more harshly than drug dealers. “If someone goes and shoots somebody, kills somebody they get the death penalty,” said Trump. In contrast, he noted “a drug dealer will kill 2,000 to 5,000 people during the course of his life”. Trump acknowledged how controversial the concept was. “I don’t know if this
