Michelle Obama thrills and inspires Milwaukee audience

On Thursday, March 14, 2019, former First Lady Michelle Obama took part in an intimate conversion with attendees that was hosted by late night talk show host Conan O'Brien at the Miller High Life Theatre promoting her new book, "Becoming."

Ms. Obama delivered an inspirational message about persistence, self-acceptance and taking the high road, even in the face of rumor and falsehood.

A diverse crowd greeted her with enthusiasm and kept the love flowing throughout the evening with applause.

Obama grew up in a family with modest income on Chicago's south side, attended public school and went to Princeton, in spite of a high school guidance counselor openly doubting that she was "Princeton material." She drew on her humble Photo by Yvonne Kemp background through her conversation with O'Brien, not as proof of her exceptionalism, but as encouragement to younger people, including the students she visited earlier Thursday at Milwaukee Collegiate Academy.

Mayor Barrett hosts 2019 UNCF's Masked Ball

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, Mayor Tom Barrett hosted the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Mayor's Masked Ball at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The UNCF Masked Ball is one of Milwaukee's signature fundraising galas and premier social events of the year. Hosted by a diverse group of corporate sponsors and individuals, it brings together local celebrities, dignitaries, civic leaders, volunteers, public officials, alumni and others who support UNCF's mission of investing in America's future. The evening included an awards ceremony, dinner, live auction, and entertainment by Sandy Redd.

Milwaukee Urban League hosts 2019 Annual Meeting

Kohl’s donates $1.5 million to Discovery World for STEM education access On Tuesday, March 19, 2019, Kohl’s announced it will award a $1.5 million grant to Discovery World, over three years, to increase access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education for children and families in Milwaukee’s most vulnerable communities through Kohl’s Design It!, a hands-on, educational program that encourages students and families to use technology to turn imagination into reality.

“Kohl’s is proud to continue our partnership with Discovery World to provide opportunities for students and families to participate in free, interactive STEM programming, increasing their knowledge of the disciplines and

exposing them to careers in the field,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s senior vice president of communications. “We applaud the work Discovery World is doing in bringing hands-on, age-appropriate learning centered around design and creativity to kids in our community.”

Discovery World will allocate Kohl’s funding to bring highly innovative STEM ed-

ucation to the fingertips of more local children and families through the following efforts: • Free school visits to Discovery World: Students from more than 250 qualifying local schools, with 50 percent or more of the student population living in poverty, will have the opportunity to visit Discovery World to participate in Kohl’s Design It!

Lab at no cost. At the Kohl’s Design It! Lab, students harness their creativity by partaking in collaborative artand design-focused STEM projects.

• No-cost community-based programming for families: The Kohl’s Design It! Mobile Lab will travel to organizations in Milwaukee communities and qualifying schools, with 70 percent or more of the total student base living in poverty, to introduce families and students to the intellectually stimulating STEM field through engaging demonstrations and a variety of hands-on learning activities, including product development.

“Kohl’s Design It! has become a pivotal resource for

local students and families to receive hands-on educational programming focused on creativity, innovation and design,” said Amy Panicucci, Discovery World’s director of marketing. “Kohl’s generous support helps us educate, motivate, mobilize, and inspire the innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow by providing impactful and engaging educational experiences today.”

Since 2010, Kohl’s and Kohl’s Cares have committed $7.5 million to Discovery World to launch and support the Kohl’s Design It! educational program, which includes the Kohl’s Design It! Lab and the Kohl’s Design It! Mobile Lab.

Black Arts MKE announces youth performing arts summer camp Black Arts MKE will offer an all day, four-week performing arts (musical theater) free summer camp for low income Milwaukee youth ages 12 to 18. Youth will be challenged to choose a story to adapt into a 45-minute musical theater performance, write the script, songs, audition, and rehearse the play.

The Counseling Corner

The loneliness epidemic (Week 4) thy because he longed for fellowship as he sat in a Roman jail under a death sentence. All of us have dealt with feelings of loneliness and isolation at some point. Like Paul, we want emotional support and comfort. After a long ministry of faithful service to the Lord, 2 Timothy 4 gives us a peek into Paul’s attitude during the final days of his life. Continuing from last week’s article, let’s look at how Paul handled his loneliness.

Paul encouraged others.

Even in times of loneliness as the Apostle Paul aged, it did not hinder Paul from encouraging others. Paul’s focus was on others and not on his circumstances and he looked for ways to encourage the spiritual growth of others he ministered to. Paul’s last letter is filled with advice for his young protégé, Timothy, and things he wished for Timothy to address during

- 2 Tim. 4:6-8 Last week, it was noted that the Apostle Paul was a great champion for the cause of Christ, yet he knew something about loneliness. In 2 Timothy 4, Paul acknowledged that the end of his time on this earth was drawing near. Paul sent for Timo-

his ministry. One antidote for loneliness is to reach out and encourage others. You will find that when you reach out and encourage others (i.e., the elderly, sick, shut-in, etc.), you won’t have time to focus on your own loneliness.

Paul desired to read God’s Word.

Paul closed this letter with instructions to Timothy to “bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.” (v. 13). Winter was approaching and the

cloak would be needed to warm the body of the aging apostle in a cold, perhaps damp, prison. The “scrolls” and “parchments” were probably some valuable manuscripts and choice works on Jewish sacred history.

Nevertheless, Paul wanted the divine Word of God to comfort and encourage him during this time of loneliness.

Beloved, it is important to remember that being alone is not the same as being lonely. Many people choose to be alone. Many people are alone and lead very happy fulfilling lives. In fact, all of us should intentionally embrace times of solitude in order to grow in our relationship with God. There are, however, others who are empty, alone and feel unwanted and unloved.

God created us as relational beings and the prolonged absence of the fellowship with others can be extreme-

ly discouraging. If you know someone who is experiencing loneliness, pray for God to present opportunities today for you to connect with them to help in some way to diminish their loneliness by either a phone call, visit or a regular word of prayer.

Dr. Jackson is the director of the Community Access, Recruitment, and Engagement (CARE) Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. CARE investigates the impact of diversity and inclusion on the quality of human subjects research and leverages deep community entrenchment to build trust and overcome barriers to clinical trial participation. Dr. Jackson also works as a cognitive neuroscientist, investigating the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly in the absence of overt memory problems.

Mr. Davis is a playwright and CEO/Founder of The Forget Me Not Project. His creativity to use the performing arts as a vehicle to raise the awareness about health issues that affect our community has been called brilliant and simply genius. Davis serves as an ambassador for the National Alzheimer’s Association working to ensure that all understand the laws that affect the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Challenge Academy information session to be held For more than 20 years, Wisconsin Challenge Academy has been helping students develop character, gain life skills, and graduate. Traditional school doesn’t work for all students, and the Wisconsin Challenge Academy is designed for young people who struggle in school and are at risk of not graduating.

Challenge Academy uses military practices to help youth gain the values, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed. Youth have the chance to get on track to earn their diploma.

The Wisconsin Challenge Academy is free to all eligible students. Students live, work, and learn for 5 ½ months at Fort McCoy in western

Wisconsin. Most MPS recruits (95%) return to Milwaukee Public Schools to complete their credits and graduate. When they return, students are matched with a mentor for 12 months of ongoing support.

While at Wisconsin Challenge Academy, cadets focus on eight core areas: • Academic excellence • Physical fitness • Leadership • Health and hygiene • Life-coping skills • Responsible citizenship • Service to community • Job skills

Who is eligible?

Males and females who are 16 years 9 months old (when

program begins) but not yet 19 and are: • One or more years behind in high school credits, expelled, or dropped out • A citizen or legal resident of the United States and a Wisconsin resident • Not currently on parole or probation (other than juvenile status offenses) • Not charged or convicted of a felony • Drug free (upon entry to the program) • A willing participant Wisconsin Challenge Academy sessions begin each January and July. Cadets graduate from the Academy in June and December. Stu-

dents who complete Challenge Academy can return to MPS to earn their traditional high school diploma and participate in their graduation ceremony.

After a strong start to the 2019 robotics season, the Riverside University High School RoboTigers stood up to more than 50 teams from across the country to reach the finals of their regional competition and come home with a win! The group competed in Chicago on March 9–10, and the impressive win qualified the team for the FIRST Robotics Championship in Detroit, scheduled for April 24–27. The only obstacle still in their way is the funding for their trip.

The students who make up the RoboTigers represent several MPS high schools.

About half the team members are girls—an unusually high ratio in the robotics world. The students are the designers, fabricators, mechanics, programmers, and operators of their robot.

With support from local businesses, teachers, alumni, and mentors, the students of Riverside Robotics have created a nationally competitive robot. This is the third consecutive year the RoboTigers have made it to FIRST Robotics championships.

The toughest part of the team’s journey is now underway. The RoboTigers are attempting to raise an additional $10,000 for their trip to cover costs for hotels, meals, and transportation.

Corporate donations from Rockwell Automation, GE Healthcare, and other local companies are covering the team’s entrance fee for the event, but more is needed quickly.

Celebrating

Women's History Month Women’s History Month: Women of color whose names you should know Part Two of Two: These leaders — Black, Latina, Asian, Arab, Native American — in varied fields, broke both gender and racial barriers as they made history.

Here is a by-no-means-comprehensive primer recognizing 36 women of color, past and present: LaDonna Harris LaDonna Harris is a Native American activist and member of the Comanche tribe. She is the founder and president of Americans for Indian Opportunity and served on the National Indian Opportunities Council as President Lyndon B. Johnson’s appointee. Harris was also an honorary co-chair for the Women’s March on Washington.

Dorothy Irene Height Dorothy Height served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, Height worked as an educator and activist seeking to increase political rights for African American women.

Dolores Huerta Dolores Huerta is a labor activist and co-founder of the National Farmworkers

Association, now the United Farm Workers. She has advocated for immigrant and Latino rights in the United States. Huerta also served as an honorary co-chair for the Women’s March on Washington.

Carol Jenkins Carol Jenkins is an Emmy-award winning TV anchor and journalist. She was a co-host of Positively Black on NBC in New York, one of the first shows dedicated to predominately black issues.

Avis Jones-DeWeever Avis Jones-DeWeever is the former executive director of the National Council of Negro Women and works today as a female empowerment and workplace diversity consultant.

Barbara Jordan Barbara Jordan was a prominent politician and civil rights leader who was the first black woman from the South elected to the U.S.

House of Representatives.

Barbara Jordan's incisiveness as a member of the House Judiciary Committee during the Richard Nixon impeachment hearings gained her national attention. In 1976 she became the first African American woman to give the keynote speech at a Democratic National Convention.

She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1990 and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994.

Coretta Scott King Coretta Scott King was a leader in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After her husband’s death, she continued his work advocating for African Americans’ rights and became a leader in the women’s rights, LGBT rights and anti-apartheid movements. In her memoir, she reiterates how black women, pivotal to the Civil Rights Movement, were too often denied top leadership positions, and how she encountered resistance from some of her husband’s compatriots.

Winona LaDuke Winona LaDuke is a Native American and environmental activist. She was

Ralph Nader’s Green Party running mate, a vice presidential nominee in 1996 and 2000. An economist, she has advocated for tribal land protection and sustainable economic development.

Audre Lorde Audre Lorde was a self-proclaimed black lesbian feminist warrior poet. She wrote 12 poetry collections and five books of prose, including A Burst of Light, which won a National Book Award.

Tamika Mallory Tamika Mallory is an African American civil rights activist, former executive director of the National Action Network and co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington.

Wilma Mankiller Wilma Mankiller was the first woman to serve as chief of the Cherokee Nation and she fought for the rights of women and Native Americans. She led the Cherokee

This week's recipe from my mother's cookbook is one of my favorite cakes…a pineapple upside-down cake. This cake is wonderful and it's delicious. As I stated in previous articles, Mom was a great cook. Her specialty was baking, especially cakes and biscuits. Box cakes were banned from our house. No Pillsbury or Duncan Hines…Mom's cooking was covered with love. Each meal represented her love and dedication to the family. Family was most important to her. We gathered every evening for dinner.

We discussed events and activities of the day. My goodness…how I miss those days of my life.

ineapple Upside-Down Cake

Yield: 1 2-layer cake, 12 servings

Topping 1 large pineapple, peeled, quartered lengthwise and cored 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) butter 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar

PREHEAT oven to 350° F.

MAKE TOPPING: Cut pineapple quarters to make 1/3-inch-thick slices.

Combine butter and brown sugar in a skillet and melt butter. Simmer over medium heat 4 minutes. When mixture is bubbly and thick, pour Cake into two 9-inch round cake 3 cups flour pans, dividing evenly, and 4 teaspoons baking powder spreading into an even layer.

12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) Arrange pineapple slices on butter top of caramel mixture in a 2 cups granulated sugar single layer.

4 large eggs 3/4 cup unsweetened MAKE CAKE: In a medium pineapple juice bowl, whisk together flour 1/4 cup rum or bourbon and baking powder. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter Frosting and sugar together until light 8 ounces cream cheese, and fluffy. Add eggs one at room temperature a time, beating well after 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, room each addition. In a 1 or 2-cup temperature glass measure, combine 1 tablespoon pineapple juice pineapple juice and rum or 2 1/2 to 3 cups powdered bourbon. Add flour mixture sugar and juice-liquor mixture 1 cup chopped toasted alternately to butter mixture,

beginning with flour mixture.

Mix just until blended. Pour batter over pineapple slices, dividing evenly between the two pans. Bake in preheated oven until top is golden brown and cake does not wobble, about 45 to 50 minutes. Let cakes cool in pans about 5 minutes before inverting each onto a flat plate. Allow to cool completely.

MAKE FROSTING: Beat together all ingredients except pecans until well blended. Stack the two cake layers, pineapple side up.

(The caramel should help them stick together.) Frost all around side of cake only (not top). Press pecans into frosting. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Book honoring great women of color: Condoleezza Rice I have the honor to introduce to our readers a woman who have left an indelible mark on the world . She was bold, smart, posed and remarkable.

Condoleezza Rice. She is the first African American woman to hold the post of Secretary of State. She was the first woman to hold the post after Colin Powell’s predecessor, Madeleine Albright.

As a child, Rice was a gifted student and a prodigy on the piano, and she entered college at the age of 15. Condoleezza considered a career as

a concert pianist but changed her studies to international relations, earning a bachelor’s degree. She later obtained a master’s degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate in international studies from the University of Denver, where her specialty was eastern and central Europe and the Soviet Union. During the administration of President George W. Bush, she was director for National Security Council and a special assistant to the president. After leaving the White House, Rice returned to Stanford University where
