Lee Holloway, former Milwaukee County Board chairman, passes Lee Holloway, a long-time Milwaukee County Board supervisor and chairman, was a blunt and liberal representative of his 5th District residents. Holloway described himself as “the product of blue-collar, working-class people.” As a politician, Holloway was known to be bombastic and successful. In his time at the courthouse, he led efforts to create a county general assistance medical program — a health safety net — that subsequently was expanded statewide as Badger Care. He also took credit for the successful effort to win voter approval of a county sales tax increase in a 2008 referendum. Holloway died Wednesday, March 14, 2018. He was 71. Holloway was elected in 1992 to represent the board’s 5th District on Milwaukee’s north side. He served as a county supervisor for 20 years and held the post of board chairman from 2004 to 2012. Holloway assumed the office of county executive in

December 2010 after Scott Walker’s election as governor. One month later, he appointed former Milwaukee Common Council President Marvin Pratt as interim county executive. “While we had our occasional political differences, I enjoyed working with Chairman Holloway during my time at the county,” Walker said in a statement. “He had a real passion for his work.” County Executive Chris Abele recognized Holloway’s service to the county. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Lee Holloway,” Abele said Thursday.

“As the first African American chair of the Milwaukee County Board, and the first African American county executive of Milwaukee County, his leadership and dedication to the people of Milwaukee County will not be forgotten.” Earl Ingram, Jr., who hosts a radio show on News/Talk 1510 AM, said he first met Holloway in the late 1960s. “A lot of people don’t know this, but Lee was a great racquetball player,” Ingram said. “He played at what used to be the YMCA on 12th and Garfield.” Ingram said he and other young African Americans

admired Holloway because he could never be forced to say something he didn’t want to say. “Lee spoke his mind,” Ingram said. “He didn’t care who was there and we loved to see him stand right in the face of newscasters and white people and say what he wanted to say.” Holloway also remained visible in the community, Ingram said. “He believed that it was important for politicians, especially black ones, to be visible,” Ingram said. “He was one of us.” On Holloway’s eight-year tenure as the County Board’s first African American chair, Ingram said: “This came at a time when we didn’t have a large representation of people who looked like us in politics.” While Holloway was beloved in the community, he was not perfect, Ingram said. He survived a 2003 recall attempt after the county pension scandal and retained his chairmanship despite an attempt to oust him in 2007. Holloway played high

school football in Milwaukee and was given a college scholarship to the University of Arkansas, where he played football and graduated in 1969. He received a master’s degree three years later in developmental disabilities from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He worked as a high school guidance counselor and with children with disabilities before taking administrative jobs with the Inner City Development Project and the Milwaukee Comprehensive Community Health Center. Holloway ran for mayor in 1988, losing a primary to John Norquist and Martin Schreiber. He successfully ran for county supervisor four years later. Holloway retired in 2012 with a $24,672-a-year county pension. He is survived by his wife, Lynda, and their two children. Services will be held at Chapel Of The Chimes Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr., Brookfield, WI, on Friday, March 23, 2018, at 11:00 a.m.

A vision of black power The African American community recently received a jolt of energy via the movie, Black Panther. The response to the movie was simply astounding. Box office returns were overwhelming. Many African Americans donned African garb to view the movie. The movie gave African Americans a concept of how black people could thrive on their own without European influence. The question is: “Could the 2018 African American survive on their own?” A community has to have a common goal/mindset that will lead the whole to success. The African American community has no unified goal, much less mindset, that will lead them anywhere. The average African American only thinks about one of the Big Three. Sex, food and money consume the minds of many Americans. Sex is pushed into the minds of African Americans via music, television and sadly life. African Americans have grown a fondness for food that borders on morbid. The love of money has created a cesspool of misery in the African American community. Black Panther offered African Americans a view of what a united mindset could achieve. African Americans grabbed the concept of an African country run by blacks and

mentally feasted on it. The imagery Hollywood created was visually and mentally stimulating for all people. It is rare that a movie comes out where there are black men dominating white men. Albeit the main brunt of violence was black on black; in the end the black man came out on top. African Americans need to see a black man come out on top and not by portraying a criminal image. Black Panther showed how black people who are not victims of exploitation from other races could live. African Americans have been exploited to the point where they have mentally bonded with the people oppressing them. The sickening love exhibited by African Americans for the society that has raped and pillaged them is pathetic. I am not saying African Americans should stop everything and go on a rampage, far from it. What is being said is that African Americans need to use the concept from Black Panther to revisit their view of society. African Americans have to

understand that the USA was created by and for white people, not to be given to former chattel. There were other powerful concepts showcased in Black Panther. The image of T’Challa being king of a modern country is powerful in itself. The concept of a modern black country with advanced technology is breathtaking. When I saw the film I smiled thinking this was what Africa could have been without contact with Europeans or Arabs. How would black people have lived if the savages from two different races had not come pushing religion and slavery? Black Panther gave the world a glimpse. Many people are talking about the possibility of a highly advanced Black civilization on the planet. This would be a great revelation for the world. Would a new civilization be a boon or bust for the 2018 version of African Americans? Who knows? The one thing African Americans should understand is that people only offer help to those who begin to help themselves. Would advanced weaponry liberate a slave who enjoys his bondage? African Americans enjoy the visual nectar Black Panther has given you. Maybe if African Americans start thinking and making some positive progress, an advanced black

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Women’s History Month (Conclusion) “Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.” - Oprah Winfrey March is Women’s History Month. This month this column has been recognizing the achievements of women throughout history. When one remembers the many accomplishments of women, one is inspired by Amelia Earhart. Amelia Earhart (1897-c.1939)

Earhart was an American aviator who set many flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation. She became the first

woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to ever fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. However, during the flight to circumnavigate the globe, Earhart disappeared somewhere over the Pacific in 1937. Her plane wreckage was never found. Earhart’s disappearance remains one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century.1 Earhart was legally declared dead in 1939. Contemporary History Maker: Oprah Winfrey (1954 - ). Oprah Winfrey is a television talk show host, film actress, philanthropist and producer. Born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954, she moved to Baltimore in 1976 to host a chat show, People Are Talking. Thereafter she was recruited to Chicago to host her own talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired for 25 seasons. Her successes came

after a dreadful childhood which included assault by a cousin, uncle and a family friend. But her tragic past didn’t stop her from excelling as an honors student and winning an oratory contest which secured her a full scholarship to college. Now she is one of the most successful women in the world today. Beloved, over the last 100 years, significant progress has been made regarding the rights of women, but there are still obstacles to overcome. An obstacle yet to be overcome is work place

equality. Research by Bareto, The Glass Ceiling in the 21st Century: Understanding Barriers to Gender Equality, noted since the coining of the phrase “glass ceiling,” women are still underrepresented in the upper echelons of organizations. In fact, today, an obstacle associated with encountering or breaking through the glass ceiling includes more nuanced forms of gender stereotyping, tokenism, and sexual harassment.2 The gender wage gap also continues to be an area of concern. It is reported by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) that women working full time in the U.S. in 2016 were typically paid just 80 percent of what men were paid. Even though this gap has narrowed since the 70s, due mainly to progress and education, it is still an equality issue that needs ongoing attention. At the rate of change between 1960 and 2016, the AAUW reports that women are ex-

pected to reach pay equity with men in 2059.3 While it is still debated whether women have indeed broken the clichéd “glass ceiling,” what we do know is that in the last 100 years, women have made considerable progress and are a critical and driving force in our society today. 1 History.com. 2 Barreto, M., Ryan, M. K., & Schmitt, M. T. (Eds.). (2009). Psychology of women book series. Menrose Johnson: Still cooking and teaching at 97 years old In 1924, the legendary jazz trumpeter, composer and singer Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong moved from Chicago to the burgeoning Harlem night club scene in New York City, a move which made him an international sensation whose music transcended the strict racial barriers of that era. That same year, three-yearold Menrose Johnson, her two sisters and the rest of her family relocated from Tupelo, Mississippi to Milwaukee. On February 15, 2018 Menrose celebrated her 97th birthday with family and friends. “I’ve been coming here since the place was built,” she said. Despite being one of the senior-most clients in the Simba adult day care unit, she typically attends St. Ann’s three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Menrose still has a razor-sharp memory and has been known to teach cooking and craft classes on occasion to the other members of her senior group. She is the step sister of Diane Beckley, chief operating officer of the St. Ann’s Bucyrus Campus. She married her husband, Aaron, when she was 18-years-old and the newlyweds soon began managing Mae’s Tavern which belonged to her mother-in-law, Mae McGee Johnson. Sometime in the 1950s Menrose and Aaron bought property near the intersection of 6th and Clarke streets. They named establishment the Metropolitan Bar and Hall. An expert cook, Menrose contributed many signature dishes to the Metropolitan Bar and later to the menu of the On the Bayou Restaurant, located at 2053 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. The restaurant is owned by her son, Greg, with whom Menrose now lives. When Menrose first started attending St. Ann’s, Diane said that she sensed that having Menrose teach an occasional cooking class might prove popular and by all indication, Diane’s instincts were correct. Cooking with Menrose has become a popular intergenerational activity. Adults and children gather around the

kitchen island as she takes them step-by-step through her recipes. Spaghetti and banana pudding are very popular, but everyone loves her peach cobbler, Menrose said. In addition to helping run the Metropolitan Bar and Hall, Menrose also crafted unique and elegant lampshades by hand for many years, a craft she hopes to begin teaching her friends and acquaintances at St. Ann’s as soon as the new Multi-Fiber Arts Room is completed. Menrose still attends St. Matthew CME Church, 2944 North Ninth Street. “A person shouldn’t just sit alone in the house watching TV,” she said when Menrose was asked by Diane her for secret staying young. “You have to get out and be with people.”

MPS hosted job fair connects students and employers Students looking for summer and year-round work had the chance to visit with dozens of employers, ask questions, fill out applications, and get ready for work at the MPS student job fair on March 14. The event was hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee as part of the M3 partnership that links UWM and MPS. To be eligible for the job fair, students were required to be 16 years or older and attend a work readiness session at their school. Work

readiness sessions assist teens in developing a resume and elevator speech, preparing for interviews, selecting an interview outfit, and adopting professional behavior needed for the workplace. The sessions are part of expanded efforts to prepare every student for college and career. Bus transportation for students from more than a dozen high schools was generously provided by the Automotive Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee

(ADAMM) and the Al Hurvis/ADAMM Education Foundation. Students chatted with employers that included the fast food and restaurant industry, health care, recreation, entertainment, summer festivals, and a wide range of businesses that depend on teenage workers. In addition to filling out applications and finding out about immediate openings, they also had opportunities to learn more about career options and long-term positions.

MPS students take part in National School Walkout On March 14, 2018, students around the country and in Milwaukee Public Schools participated in the student-led National School Walkout. It called for students to gather outside school at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes – one minute for each of the individuals killed during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last month. At every MPS school participating in the walkout, students were respectful and followed district guidelines for the demonstration. District leaders, teachers and staff expressed their pride at the way students handled

dents and staff in the middle of the field and spoke passionately and eloquently about the actions they wish to see from lawmakers. Two students read spoken word poems for the crowd. MPS administrators remarked that in an age of hands-on learning, this event made a powerful impact on students and delivered a unique, unforgettable experience. Schools across the district took this opportunity to talk about civic engagement, the Bill of Rights, gun regulation, and more in a variety of age-appropriate experiences.

Ten shocking facts you didn’t know about your Backwoods and Swisher Sweets By Tia Muhammad As my brother lit one up on a Sunday evening, I couldn’t help but wonder what he was truly inhaling into his body. As a long-time medical and personal marijuana user, I assumed he knew– he didn’t. You see, he had a ritual. He would find his plastic baggy, turn on his music, sit at the dining room table, and commence to prepping his weed. He’d crumble it and break it down into tiny, itty bitty pieces. Then, he’d take out his Backwoods or Swisher Sweets, dump its contents, then began wetting the entire tobacco leaf with his saliva. As a germophobe, I couldn’t help but cringe. Then, he’d put all the ground up weed into the leaf, rolled it, then dried it with a lighter. He said, “that part kills the germs.” –Right. I myself have partaken in this same ritual. When I got to college, I tried it for the first time. That was actually the first time I’d ever smoked anything, period. I noticed it was “the thing to do.” Either you smoked cigarettes, Black n’ Milds, or weed with Backwoods and Swisher Sweets. It was a socializing activity to be quite honest. Needless to say, just like him, I had no idea what I was really doing to my body. I knew smoking was bad, but for some reason, I only equated that with smoking

cigarettes. Little did I know, what I was doing, was much worse… Black n’ Milds and other small cigars are more harmful than we think. For starters, it’s ALL tobacco! Yep, the paper we use to roll our weed is tobacco and the ground up bits we pour out are pieces of MORE tobacco. If you smoke your Swisher Sweets intact you’re getting a double dose of that tobacco, and that’s even worse. If you’re curious, just like I was, take a look at these hard-hitting facts you probably didn’t know about your go-to Backwoods and Swisher Sweets: 1. It’s addictive. Backwoods and Swisher Sweets are in fact small cigars, or “blunts”, and are just as much addictive as cigarettes and they kill like cigarettes, too. 2. It’s ALL tobacco. A Backwood or Swisher Sweet typically consists of two main parts: the inner leaf, which is similar to a cigarette rolling paper, except it is made of tobacco, and a thicker outer leaf which is rolled around the inner leaf in a spiral. 3. It’s not safer. Despite what you may have heard cigar smoking isn’t safer than cigarette smoking, even if you don’t intentionally inhale the smoke. Like cigarette smoking, cigar smoking exposes you to nicotine. Cigars, like cig-

arettes, contain nicotine, the substance that can lead to tobacco dependence, multiple types of cancer, autoimmune disease, heart disease, blood diseases, lung disease, oral disease, vision impairment, bone loss, and can affect the reproductive system. 4. You can’t interchange your risks. Switching from cigarette smoking to cigar smoking can be particularly harmful because you might inhale cigar smoke the way you inhaled cigarette smoke. The more cigars you smoke and the deeper you inhale, the greater the risks. 5. Numbers don’t lie. A study showed, 480,000 people die prematurely in the United States each year due to smoking tobacco or being exposed to tobacco smoke. 6. It might be a scam. Many Swisher Sweets, also known as “small cigars” have the same size and shape as

cigarettes, and, like cigarettes, are sold in packs of twenty, often with filter tips. But these “little cigar” cigarettes exploit loopholes in existing legal definitions of cigarettes to escape being regulated or taxed as cigarettes, making them much more available and affordable, especially to youth. 7. They’re marketing to your kids and you don’t even know it. Much of the growing popularity of small cigars and cigarette-like “little cigars” comes from the explosive growth in flavorings, such as candy, fruit, chocolate and various other kid attracting tastes. Completed research on flavored cigarettes shows that they are being tried and used primarily by youth. A cigar retailer once commented, “The flavors attract customers.” 8. 1 joint = 20. Researchers

found that smoking only one joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer. While studies in the past have shown that marijuana can cause cancer, few have actually established a strong link between marijuana use and the actual incidence of lung cancer. 9. Weed and tobacco don’t mix. Cigar wrappers contain tobacco and nicotine, which may interact with the cardiovascular system and subjective effects of the marijuana to produce a different set of effects and risks. So, in all actuality, you’re not getting the purest form of what you’re truly trying to partake in. 10. Black men should take extra precaution. Of all ethnic/racial and gender groups in the United States, African American men are the most likely to develop lung cancer and also to die from the disease. Overall, I learned a lot. First, if you smoke, the best thing you can do for your overall health is to just stop. End it now before you look back and you’re much older and your body can’t fight off diseases so easily. Know that help is available! If you smoke now, smoked in the past or been around a lot of smoke, talk to your doctor about whether you should be screened for lung cancer based on your age and smoking history.

‘Until the Flood’ revisits the trauma, legacy of racism By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times

Playwright and star of "Until the Flood" Dael Orlandersmith. the Michael Brown incident. St. Louis Rep Associate Artistic Director Seth Gordon reached out to New Yorkbased playwright Dael Orlandersmith. He invited her to come to St. Louis to entertain the idea of writing a play to address the incident. The result was Until the Flood, a one-act play based on scores of interviews Orlandersmith conducted with St. Louis-area residents from varying ages and backgrounds. Her interviews

resulted in eight composite characters – black and white, young and old, male and female – their varying views on race, and whether it is possible for a community in crisis to heal, move on and grow together. Orlandersmith plays all the characters, flowing from one to the next by donning a shawl or scarf here, a jacket or baseball cap there. As she crafted the characters and their viewpoints, each had to come to grips with

THE

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18-year-old high school graduate just days away from starting college, was shot 12 times and killed by Darren Wilson, a 28-year-old police officer in Ferguson, MO, a suburb north of St. Louis. Brown was suspected of committing a strong-arm robbery of a convenience store; Wilson was the officer who answered the radio alert describing the suspect. Brown was African American and unarmed; Wilson was white. In the aftermath of the shooting, peaceful protests erupted into civil disorder that lasted several days. Surrounding police departments joined forces to maintain order dressed in riot gear and carrying military-grade weapons. The name Ferguson became a buzzword, synonymous with police brutality and racial unrest. Months later, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis wanted to find a way to engage the community in discussion about what happened with

the realization that “we all have a racist living inside of us. Some people don’t want to own that and some flaunt it. Either way, we each have to deal with that truth.” Louisa, a black retired teacher who grew up in Ferguson, sees a community whose racial divide has only grown wider and deeper over the years, despite apparent legal and social change. Rusty is a white retired policeman who patrolled Ferguson during the 1960s and ‘70s. He lives in Lemay in South St. Louis County. Although he seems not to see being pro-white as being anti-anyone else, he views the world from the vantage point of ‘us versus them’. Seventeen-year-old Hassan speaks the language of the street in rap/rhyme that, from personal experience, voices a negative opinion of the police. Behind his gruff façade is a scared young black man wishing for a more stable life and the opportunity to be ‘somebody’. Connie, a white high school teacher from affluent University City, learns about racism firsthand when she loses a presumed friend Margaret,

a black high school teacher who labels Connie a misguided liberal when she calls both Michael Brown and Darren Wilson tragic victims. ‘How is Darren Wilson tragic? My god, how I hate liberals; at least with an out-and-out bigot, I know where the hell I stand!’ Margaret exhorted as she broke off her relationship with Connie. Reuben is an older black man who owns a barbershop in North City and is acutely aware of the fact that people are always being judged on looks, especially race. His concern is about all people being treated fairly, without bias or preference. Dougray is a white electrician who lives in Tower Grove South but owns rental property in Ferguson. He proudly proclaims his personal success as the result of his initiative alone. He fails to see that his white skin may have opened doors for him that still remain closed to minorities. His bigotry is palpable and he hopes to pass his beliefs on to his children. (Continued on pg. 14)

“All the Women in My Family Sing,” edited by Deborah Santana Who are you? Spoken or unspoken, serious or in jest, you get asked that question all the time. Where are you from? Who are your parents? Have you been here before, and what do you do? In All The Women in My Family Sing, edited by Deborah Santana, the questions stand: who are you and what is your story? It’s a no-brainer: every day you spend in this world is different, socially, than it was last week, last year, in your mother’s time. Great-grandma might not even recognize your world – and that’s especially so if you are women of color. Take, for instance, home. It’s a complicated word, to be sure. It means going back to where people love you, where your roots lie, even if your parents spent their lives leaving it. It might be the first place you experienced bullying. Maybe you wonder where “home” is – or you may already be there but you’re “just not sure how long [you’ll] stay.” On racism: what would you say if, after learning about Rosa Parks, your child asks which water fountain he would’ve had to choose, had he lived then? Or: what

taught them through example what it was like to be a woman of color. Still, many write about being the “only”: the only Black English teacher, the only Asian student, the only forty-something Latina in the mom-group… Sometimes, you may “feel like part of no people and every people.” Your hair is curly. Your political beliefs are loud. The next generation is yours to raise, if you choose, and you’ve got things to tell them. They’re like an addiction. Read one, and your eyes fly open. Turn to the middle and your heart sinks. Taste one at random and find a kindred spirit, then disagree with another that just doesn’t touch you right. That’s the appeal

of this book: each of the essays in here – written by everyday women as well as those with fame – are short enough to dip into quick, you can easily skip around, and they’ll all make you think and think and think. Yes, All the Women in My Family Sing is for women. It’s more feminist than not. And yes, men can enjoy it, too, because reading it is like falling into a web of nourishing voices. This is a book to have, no matter who you are.

Although the new Foxconn LCD screen manufacturing plant to be constructed 30 miles south of Milwaukee in Pleasant Prairie is not expected to be operational until at least 2020, Milwaukee County Board Chairman Theodore Lipscomb, Sr., testified in favor of developing bus service at a meeting of the Milwaukee County Board transportation committee on March 7, 2018. The committee unanimously approved to “receive and place on file” an informational report prepared by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission which examines the potential economic benefits of an intergovernmental proposal to create a regional transit and workforce development proposal to connect Milwaukee, Racine and the new manufacturing facility. The study concludes that providing public transportation to the manufacturing facility could enable as many as 1,300 Milwaukee residents to find employment once the plant opens. In order to fund the service, Lipscomb invited Racine County and the State of Wisconsin to partner with Milwaukee on the service. The three financed a new terminal hanger for Midwest Airlines in 2003. The sale of

that asset brought in about $4.5 million than the project cost and Lipscomb has proposed using those funds to begin the new transportation route. “It’s not every day that we know that there are thousands of jobs coming just down the street in our region and I think for many of us it’s tempered by the question of ‘Will Milwaukee benefit from those jobs?’ and I’m very interested in making sure that Milwaukee does benefit from those jobs,” he said as reported by WUWM public radio. Lipscomb also said that a successful agreement on this issue could help provide momentum for a solution to what many view as a long-term problem: many high-paying job locations in southeastern Wisconsin are not in Milwaukee County and coordination of public transportation route across county lines is for the most part nonexistent. The hearing by the transportation board on March 7, 2018 was for informational purposes only. Lipscomb said the new Milwaukee County Board will be seated in April and formally consider the proposal.
