Longtime youth and children's advocate Gwen T. Jackson passes
On Monday, March 25, 2019, Walker's Point Youth & Family Center released a statement on Facebook® announcing the passing of long-time advisory council member and local child and youth advocate Gwen T. Jackson at age 90. The posting stated: "We are deeply saddened to announce our long-time Advisory Council member, Gwen T. Jackson, passed away this weekend. She was dedicated to Milwaukee and particularly the young people within our community. She will be greatly missed but her legacy will continue." It has been said that when you hear the name Gwen T. Jackson, the words “spirit” and “dedication” come to mind. Gwen T. Jackson is a retired human resources vice president who participated extensively in American Red Cross leadership at the chapter, regional and national level. She was the first African American to be appointed National Chair of Volunteers for the American Red Cross. Jackson, Chair Emeritus for the American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin, marked 50 years of Red Cross volunteer service in 2007. Gwen has been a leader throughout the Red Cross organization, as well as in the community. Remarkably well-known at both the local and national levels, Gwen has positively impacted the lives of thousands and has greatly influenced the significance of volunteerism. Jackson began her Red Cross career in 1961, as a volunteer in the Service to Military Families Department of the Greater Milwaukee Chapter. By 1988 she had risen to one of the highest volunteer positions in the organization—National Chair of Volunteers. Her leadership accomplishments during her four years in this

national-level position were nothing shy of extraordinary. While serving as the National Chair of Volunteers, Gwen coined the phrase, “Paid staff get a paycheck and volunteer staff get a payback.” At both the community and the national level, Jackson worked tirelessly on Red Cross projects. Ms. Jackson had been a leader through many Red Cross experiences and had proven herself to be nothing less than exceptional. Her varied contributions include assistance with major natural disasters such as Hurricane Hugo and the Loma Prieta Earthquake; support for Persian Gulf War efforts; and serving as a member of the American Red Cross Board of Governors. Gwen’s life-long commitment to civic involvement earned her numerous awards and well-deserved recognitions, including the establishment of the Gwen T. Jackson Leadership Endowment Some of her additional accomplishments include: Cynthia Wedel Award, an honor that is presented to a Red Cross volunteer whose outstanding efforts might otherwise go unrecognized. The Gwen T. Jackson Community Service Award was established in 1981 and is presented annually to the United Way volunteer who best exemplifies a spirit of volunteerism and dedication
to one’s community and fellow man. In addition, Gwen has been dedicated to the YWCA since 1979, where she has served on the Board of Directors and as a member of the Circle of Women. In 1995 the YWCA named a building in the Y-Villages after her – “Gwen T. Jackson Senior Building”. “I have had a very fulfilling life and I believe it is expected of me to give back to my community,” Gwen said. “It is so much fun and I grow every day from volunteering.” In the late 1950’s Gwen was on the Family Life Committee of the Milwaukee Urban League. Child care was the predominant issue identified and, along with colleague Edith Finlayson, Gwen began working with the EB Phillips Child Care Center. Thus the advocacy journey of Gwen Jackson, community volunteer, began. Throughout the next decades she participated in a variety of committees designed to improve public policy around early childhood issues. This included a vicechair position along with then- County Supervisor Paul Mathews, to examine a voucher system of payment for child care services. She was then appointed chairperson of what became known as the Child Care Advisory Committee designed to bring a community voice to the

Beginning in 2000, Gwen was asked by County Executive Ament to explore and then lead the formation of the Early Childhood Council (ECC) of Milwaukee to bring together decision makers and their resources to improve Milwaukee area early childhood services. She was the first chair of the ECC and remained a member until the Council was discontinued. As chair, her was to make sure that there was “a group

Jackson has been a prominent voice in support of young children for almost 50 years. The loneliness epidemic (Week 4)
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4
and conclude by encouraging you that God is our constant companion as God assures us, even during periods of loneliness, God will “never leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Heb. 13:5).
Are you lonely? Loneliness, according to Britannica, is a “distressing experience that occurs when a person’s social relationships are perceived by that person to be less in quantity, and especially in quality, than desired. The experience of loneliness is highly subjective; an individual can be alone without feeling lonely and can feel lonely even when you are with other people.” Experts have gone so far as to call loneliness an epidemic. One thing is for certain, loneliness has never been a respector of persons. People of whatever age, race, religion, gender, country, etc., can be subject to loneliness. In the conclusion of this series, we will look at a study regarding loneliness and young people
Loneliness and the younger generation Contrary to many beliefs, the elderly are not the loneliest among us. It is young people who are most lonely. In a U.S. News and World Report entitled: “Many Americans Report Feeling Lonely: Younger Generations More So”, (May 2018) noted that Generation Zers and Millennials reported higher feelings of loneliness and isolation. Generation Z (those between the ages of 18-22), were the loneliest generation, with a “loneliness score” of 48.3. Possible loneliness scores range from 20-80, with the national average of 44. Millennials (ages 23-37) were close behind with a score of 45.3. In addition, the report
noted while we live in a digital world, social media use is not a predictor of feelings of loneliness. Nemecek, a chief medical officer for Behavioral Health at CIGNA noted: “What that means really is that I could have 1,000 or 10,000 friends on Facebook, but it’s the meaningful in-person relationships that I have with other people that actually keep me from becoming lonely.”
The Lord is with you in your loneliness Before Jesus ascended into Heaven, Jesus assured His followers that “I am with you even until the end of the world.” (Matt. 28:20). Although your lonely situation may have you feeling isolated and all alone, when you are in Christ, you always have Jesus as your companion. The Lord stood with the Apostle Paul as he proclaimed the message of Christ. (2 Tim. 4:17). Just as the Lord was with Paul, Jesus is with you,

Judge Andrew Jones has served as the judge in Branch 40 of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court for the last six months. Judge Jones is seeking to retain his seat on the bench in the upcoming election on April 2. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Jones had twenty-four years of courtroom experience at every level of the state and federal court systems. He sat on the boards of directors of two major law firms as a practicing lawyer, and he also served for more than a decade in various leadership roles in his firm’s diversity, recruiting, mentoring, and attorney development programs. Judge Jones currently sits on the board of directors of the Milwaukee Bar Association Foundation, which helps fund and oversee the Milwaukee Justice Center, which utilizes volunteers to address the unmet legal needs of Milwaukee County’s low-income, unrepresented litigants. He also sits on the board of directors of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, a leading hunger relief organization, and he volunteers as a mentor through the federal bar association in Milwaukee. Based on his experience as a practicing lawyer, his commitment to the community, and his work on the bench, Judge Jones has earned broad support for his campaign to retain his seat in Branch 40.

COMMUNITY COLUMN MPS students earning college credit at UWM and MATC By Kathy Quirk
College pilot program. MPS provides lunches and pays for the classes. MATC provides bus passes for all the students. UWM adjusted one of its educational psychology courses – originally designed for first-year college students – so that it could be tailored to high school students.
Milwaukee Public Schools high school students are getting a taste of college and earning credits through the M3 Early College pilot program. M3 (pronounced M-cubed) is a multifaceted collaboration among the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Technical College and MPS, which collectively serve more than 130,000 students. M3 features a variety of programs and initiatives designed to help achieve many goals, including boosting student achievement and ensuring that students have the necessary resources to advance to college and into the workforce. The M3 Early College pilot program debuted in the spring 2019 semester with more than 30 MPS students. They attend English and mathematics courses at MATC as well as an educational psychology course at UWM that focuses on the foundations for academic success.
“We feel this is an ideal time to offer this course as the students are preparing for their transition into college,” said Jacqueline Nguyen, a UWM associate professor of educational psychology who co-teaches the Pathways to Success in College course with graduate assistant Travis Love.

Inspiring such belief in students was one of the key drivers behind the program, according to Vicki Bott, a manager in UWM’s Office of Dual Enrollment. Many of the enrollees would be the first from their families to attend college. “If they can see themselves as college material, see themselves in college,” Bott said, “that’s a real positive.”

from his guidance counselor. Although it meant adjusting his schedule away from a more familiar routine at Reagan, he felt the benefits were worth it.
The course covers everything from how to interact with instructors to note-taking, academic writing and study skills. It also covers social and emotional skills, such as managing stress and relationships. And during one recent session, students learned about undergraduate research opportunities available to them should they attend UWM. “The students are doing well in class,” Love said. “They’re really engaged.”
“I was all for it, even though I’d have to leave school and not be there with my friends,” Hall said. “But I had to focus on my future. Celebrating
Women's History Month Honor Women's History Month by supporting Black women at work If you want to celebrate Women’s History Month and Black Women's History Month in April, support the black and brown women in your workplace. But you might want to skip the tribute lunches or “lean-in” style pep talks. This is the premise of a new article published in HBR from Zuhairah Washington, a senior vice president at Expedia Group and Laura Morgan Roberts, a consultant and professor of management at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, who made the case so well that I scrapped an essay on the same topic. As a peer or manager, your first step should be to understand how the experiences of black women differ from other people in the workforce, and in particular, white or majority-culture women. They begin with the ambition: Some 64 percent of black women told Nielsen that their goal is to make it to the top of their professions. We’re well-educated, and leadership bound. According to Lean In/McKinsey, some 83 percent of Asian women, 80 percent of black women, and 76 percent of Latinas say they want to be promoted, compared to 75 percent of men and 68 percent of white women. We’re persisting, but not represented. After promising starts, we begin losing women of color in the leadership pipeline after they transition into their first leadership jobs, and then at increasingly alarming rates until they become woefully underrepresented in senior leadership and executive suites; on corporate boards; and in the informal networks where people find sponsors, mentors, and developmental assignments. And while we are at work, we often feel the “emotional tax” of being twice an underrepresented group, not-white and notmale. Washington and Roberts have a six-point plan to help any organization better retain their black, female talent – the most important overall tactic might be to make sure your firm checks for the compounding bias of gender and race in reviews, promotions, and hiring. Most firms don’t. “Tracking the performance of women of color and the velocity and rate at which they’re hired and promoted versus their peers is the only way to measure progress in creating a more diverse leadership bench.”
But a lot of what they talk about are the simple steps that any ally can take every day, in small but meaningful ways. Here are two. Be welcoming and then, be acknowledging. “Being the only woman of color on a team can be extremely taxing,” they say. “You’re torn between authenticity and assimilating.” They opt-out of social gatherings and are less likely to share details of their per-
sonal lives. “Managers can help employees overcome this hesitation by extending a personal invitation to attend office gatherings and making it clear that they look forward to getting to know them better.” And then, make sure these women are not invisible. Managers should be aware of the common biases operating against black women, they say, such as the research that shows black women’s statements were remem-
bered less quickly and less accurately than those of their white female and male peers. “Managers should make people more aware of this unconscious bias and openly call out instances where good work is being underappreciated or ignored.” I would add that these two moves would also be beneficial for Asian American professional women, many of whom have almost no shot of making it up the leadership ladder, for a variety of
vexing and specific reasons. But it’s important to add that all of this is more than just checking a box, being kind, or appearing woke. Being an ally actually takes some effort on your part. If you want to make people feel seen, you have to be able to see them – and all the humanity and potential they bring to their jobs. Understanding why you haven’t before now is part of that work.

Recipes From My Mother

This week's recipe from my mother's cookbook is one of my favorite cakes…a coconut cake. This cake is wonderful and it's delicious. As I stated in previous articles, Mom was a great cook. Her specialty was baking, especially cakes and biscuits. Box cakes were banned from our house. No Pillsbury or Duncan Hines…Mom's cooking was covered with love. Each meal represented her love and dedication to the family. Family was most important to her. We gathered every evening for dinner. We discussed events and activities of the day. My goodness…how I miss for those days of my life. - Lynda Jackson Conyers

Election 2019: Spring Ballot
Wednesday, April 03, 2019
Notice of Spring Election and Sample Ballots April 2, 2019 OFFICE OF THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION TO THE VOTERS OF THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE Notice is hereby given of a spring election to be held in the City of Milwaukee on April 2, 2019, at which the officers named below shall be chosen. The names of the candidates for each office to be voted for, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office, each in its proper column, in the sample ballot below. INFORMATION TO VOTERS Upon entering the polling place, a voter shall state his or her name and address, show an acceptable form of photo identification and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. If a voter does not have acceptable photo identification the voter may obtain a free photo ID for voting from the Division of Motor Vehicles. If a voter is not registered to vote, a voter may register to vote at the polling place serving his or her residence, if the voter presents proof of residence in a form specified by law. Where ballots are distributed to voters, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the voter shall retire alone to a voting booth and cast his or her ballot except that a voter who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the voter’s minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the voter of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice. Where Optical Scan Voting is Used The voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. When using an electronic ballot marking device (“Automark/ExpressVote”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes’ time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the voter in casting his or her vote may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. Spoiled Ballot If the voter spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After Voting the Ballot After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve, so the marks do not show. After casting his or her vote, the voter shall leave the booth, insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve, or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The voter shall leave the polling place promptly. A voter may select an individual to assist in casting his or her vote if the voter declares to the presiding official that he or she is unable to read, has difficulty reading, writing or understanding English or that due to disability is unable to cast his or her ballot. The selected individual rendering assistance may not be the voter’s employer or an agent of that employer or an officer or agent of a labor organization which represents the voter. A sample ballot is included with this notice. Wards 1 through 34 will have the same contests as those shown on the sample ballot included with this notice. Wards 35 through 44, 70, 72 through 95, 157, 161 through 168, and 204 will have the following school board contest on their ballot rather than the School Board Director, District 1 contest shown on the sample ballot: School Board Director, District 2 Vote for 1 Wendell Harris Erika Siemsen write-in
