On Friday March 31, 2017 WISN-TV Channel 12 said goodbye to longtime senior reporter Mike Anderson. A reporter and news anchor for WISN-TV since 1981, Anderson has become a staple in many of Milwaukee's homes and were saddened when he announced his retirement after 36 years on the air. However, his WISN-TV colleages had one more surprise for Mike on his last day. During his final broadcast Mike was kidnapped off the set and whisked away to Miller Park, where he got to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Brewers exhibition game against the White Sox. Mike will surely be missed as he has been a fixture in our community as well as our MC for the Milwaukee Times Black Excellence awards for over a decade. Congratulations on Your Retirement, Mike! www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Time for a reset

It must be “nice” to have all the time in the world to get involved with the “calls for actions,” protests and political campaigns. But for a lot of us, it is another story… we are just trying to make ends meet each and every week. And we certainly don’t have the time, luxury nor the bank account to deal with all the crazy things that are going on and especially what is coming out of Washington these days. It is getting quite confusing… to say the least. And to make matters sound worse is the reality that the lives of people continue to be held in the

balance and used as pawns. For those who live below the poverty line, dealing with a long term illness, disability, unemployment, incarceration, mental health crisis or a drug addiction…life is as real as it can get. All the big talk or hot air and political posturing is not working for those who are looking forward to improving the quality of their lives. If you can feel what I am saying! It's easy to talk when all your bills are paid, enjoying a good paying job with benefits, live in a nice house in a great neighborhood, go on a vacation or two each year,

drive a new car and can retire in style. But talk is cheap when the shoe is on the other foot and things are not going so well. If fact, the one remaining shoe is on a “banana peel” and it can go at any time. What is so puzzling to me

is that the needs and the voices of those who suffer in “silence” are going unheard. They are being ignored by those who have been elected to serve for them. And it is a shame that what we see unfolding is going in a different direction than what we were told. What ordinary people need who are caught up in an economic freefall is some relief, an opportunity or second chance. As the old saying goes… “If I only knew then what I know now…I would have made another choice.” Now where is that button? Dr. Andrew Calhoun can be heard each week at Grace

Message to the Class of 2017 High school graduation time is quickly approaching. High school seniors are preparing to enter the world as adults. Many have plans to go to college while others may go into the military. Some seniors have no idea what they plan to do after high school. There is one thing every senior will agree to: they are ready to enter adulthood. There are a few things I would like to impress upon the class of 2017. First, enjoy the time you have left as a high school student. I know the classes have become long and the teachers a bore. You have to keep in mind that this is it. Once you walk the stage for graduation there is no class the following Monday. No longer will adults look at you as a child.

www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Once you graduate you will be considered grown. These last few weeks are the end of an 18-year journey, so savor the time. Many seniors come out of high school with baggage. The baggage can be in the form of friends or love interests. There is nothing wrong with hanging out with your friends, but do not be afraid to move on. Some friends are not going where you are. This doesn’t make your choice correct and theirs wrong. Be aware that if you move along on your desired path there is a chance that the people you consider friends today will become distant memories. Understand that there is nothing wrong with evolving as a person. Love interests are another form of baggage. There

are some people who marry their high school sweetheart immediately after graduating and it works. There is a vast number who do this and it doesn’t. The reason is everyone grows as a person. What you may like in 2017 may not be what you like in 2024 or even 2019. Get out and see what life has to offer. You

may be afraid of losing what you have but you can never lose what you are supposed to get. Also if you go and see the world you may better appreciate what you do have. Don’t create misery by either using guilt or children to keep someone. Live with confidence. There billions of people on the earth. Use the freedom of being young to your advantage. Go to college if you want. I wouldn’t suggest you run up a bunch of student loans to go. Take trips every chance you get. There is a saying, “When a single person eats their family is fed.” Use this to your advantage. Children are a beautiful thing, until the costs and time start piling up. Enjoy your life so that when you do decide to start a fam-

ily you are ready and have something to share with your children other than the misery of misused life. Lastly, do not destroy yourself. The person in the mirror can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Do not let you stop you. I know for a fact that people can destroy themselves or derail their own train and not even know it. Anger and hatred may be tools of the Darkside in Star Wars but they kill a person inside. Live a harmonious peaceful life. Understand the voice in your head is always testing you. Don’t be ashamed if you fail the test but pass as much as you can. The world is yours, class of 2017. As you walk off the stage and take pictures look around. Savor the moment because it is fleeting. Remember that moment, then file it away and go forth. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Climate change: How woke are you? (Part 1) "GOD took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order. - Genesis 2:15, MSG Bible Nearly 50 years ago, on March 31, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a sermon at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. entitled: “Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution.” Dr. King spoke about the importance of people remaining awake, always involved, seeking improvement, and recognizing that our actions have important impacts on the lives of others. While Dr. King was speaking on freedom and equality, eerily that sermon has many similarities to our lives today. One of which concerns the matter of climate change. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”) describes climate change as a change in the Earth’s climate. This could be a change in the Earth’s usual temperature, or it could be a change in where rain and snow usually fall

on Earth. While the Earth’s climate is always changing, people who study the Earth, see that the Earth’s climate is getting warmer. In fact, NASA notes the Earth’s temperature has gone up about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the last 100 years. This small change in the Earth’s temperature, while it may not seem like much, can have big effects. For example, let’s look at the effects climate change and warming impacts our water resources. Both society and the ecosystem depend on a reliable and clean water supply. Water is also needed for agriculture, energy production, recreation and manufacturing. Climate change, per the United States Environmental Protection Agen-

cy (EPA), is likely to increase water demand while shrinking water supplies. Warmer temperatures increase the rate of evaporation of water into the atmosphere, in effect increasing the atmosphere’s capacity to “hold” water. Increased evaporation may dry out some areas and fall as excess precipitation on other areas. Why is this important? The EPA reports that over the past 50 years, the amount of rain falling during very heavy precipitation events has increased for most of the U.S. Furthermore, warming winter temps cause more precipitation to fall as rain rather than snow; while rising temps cause snow to begin melting earlier in the year.

As temperatures rise, people and animals need more water to maintain their health and thrive. Many important activities, like producing energy at power plants, raising livestock and growing food crops also require water. However, the amount of water available for these activities may be reduced as the earth warms and if competition for water resources increases. Warmer temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns are also making some regions hotter and drier, which fuels devastating wildfires. Beloved, the Earth is a gift to us from God. As stewards, we are to take care of the Earth, use its resources wisely, neither exploiting, destroying or treating it recklessly. While some still doubt, climate change is real and there is evidence that humans are contributing to climate change in significant ways. It’s time to move beyond just talking about the consequences of climate change; but begin committing ourselves to being “woke” that devastating droughts, flooding, wildfires, and the effects of climate change affects us

all and can no longer be ignored. As stewards of God’s creation, may we begin to take that job more seriously. It is this writer’s prayer that you will join me this month as we focus our attention on the issue of climate change. Education

Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Taking matters in to our own hands! YES, WE CAN! There are three seemingly insolvable problems that schools face nationwide; a shortage of teachers, closing the achievement gap, and finding racially and ethnically diverse teachers. These are considered among the most difficult challenges that urban, suburban, and rural schools face. Today, school districts are already planning for the next school year, hoping to find just the right composition of teachers so they may continue to implement an array of initiatives that will finally result in students of color achieving on par with white (majority) students. There is an urgency to solve these problems because each year more and more students are being exposed to less prepared teachers. The good news is that there is a consortium of schools and school districts that have banded together to aggressively address these problems now. Achievement Gap: Just two years ago, a report by the McIver Institute reported that Wisconsin had the largest achievement gap nationwide as measured by graduation rate. There was a nearly 27 percent difference in graduation rate of white students compared to students of color. The districts with

teachers from diverse backgrounds, bringing different perspective, cultural experiences and exposure? The State of Wisconsin is seeking to address the shortage problem by creating alternative ways for teachers to get licensed who may not have the gone through the schools of education but have high skill sets in technical areas where they help teach students. the largest gap were not in the Milwaukee metropolitan districts but rather in Madison, or in northern semirural districts. Wauwatosa School and Elmbrook School Districts had the lowest reported gap with their percentages being 3.3 percent and .05 percent respectively. Diversity of teachers in the classroom: Nationwide, it is estimated that minority students comprise 40 percent of our school populations, yet only 17 percent of teachers are minority according to an earlier report issued by the Center for American Progress. It was also found that as many as 40 percent of public schools do not have any teachers of color. Teacher shortage: The teacher shortage is not a new problem. Many of the major

universities in Wisconsin are seeing dramatics drops in the enrollment to their schools of education; as much as 25 percent over the last five years. This problem is deeply rooted over time. There are increasing numbers of teachers eligible for retirement in every district, yet fewer teachers in the pipeline. All of these issues pose problems as public schools are vested the responsibility for preparing all children to become contributing citizens in a world that is multiracial and multiethnic. The student enrollments are rapidly increasing in diversity particularly in urban areas. How realistic is the school experience if neither white nor black, or multiethnic or multiracial students never have an opportunity get to have

Every year, there is an effort to specifically find teachers of color who may be interested in connecting with students. This is no easy task with the shortage of teachers increasing and students of color opting for many more careers outside of teaching because the opportunities are there. Of course, there are other related problems not mentioned here; as whether underperforming students are likely to have the least experienced teachers. Teacher turnover rates continue to be as high a 25 percent over a five-year period. Addressing the issue: Resilience is the answer and 24 school districts have come together to sponsor

a Closing the Achievement Gap Consortium Career Fair that has these three goals in mind: to find highly qualified teachers; to attract teachers of color and to augment their staffs with new or experienced teachers who are culturally responsive and effective teaching diverse students. Of course, this is not a sweeping response to these problems but these are necessary beginning steps to provide hope and opportunity to the students in these districts. This Career Fair represent only one of the myriad of methods and research that the Consortium has engaged into to tackle this issue. Anyone interested in making a difference in any one of 24 school districts is invited to attend the Closing the Achievement Gap Consortium/Concordia University Career Fair being held Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Concordia University fieldhouse from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Additionally, information is available online: www.cuw.edu/cagcfair or by calling Christy: 262.243.2148 Representatives from WECAN Wisconsin’s common application will also be available to help applicants apply for positions.

From slavery to present: Why blacks distrust healthcare (Final)

By: Richard Allen Williams, M.D. As the leader of the National Medical Association, I have the responsibility to provide a perspective to our constituents on key issues in medicine that are important to us and to the patients whom we serve. One of those issues is TRUST, which has special meaning to people who have been subjected to so many abuses and indignities over the past 400 years. In the tradition and in memory of the late legendary Howard University School of Medicine professor, civil rights activist, former NAACP president, past president of the Na-

tional Medical Association, philosopher, and my personal mentor and hero, W. Montague Cobb, MD, Ph.D, I submit the following perspective on this topic, which will be incorporated into my forthcoming book, Blacks in Medicine: Clinical, Demographic, and Socioeconomic Correlations (Springer Science & Media, 2017). Building Trust What are the basic tenets of trust? They include dependability, reliability, respect for privacy, decency, belief in the abilities and good intentions of the providers of care, and a feeling that the patient will be treated with dignity and proper concern. The historical backdrop that has been presented above illustrates that, in the case of the black patients, these ingredients and necessary precursors of trust have been painfully missing. In order to build trust, it is necessary that we must first correct this situation, which means that we have to begin by acknowledging its existence. Denial of the transgressions of history must be

eliminated, starting with the proper education of practitioners and students of medicine. In the case of medical practitioners, it is important for them to be re-educated about the cultural, ethnic, racial, and religious distinctions and differences that characterize minority patients. As a first step, these practitioners need to learn what cultural diversity is and how to develop cultural competence. For example, they must learn that there are differences in the way that illness and disease are perceived by differ-

ent ethnic groups, and also in the way that diseases are expressed. A patient who is of Maya Indian origin who was born in Zincantan in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico might not understand illness in the orthodox Western context, and instead may think of disease as a foreign process or spirit invading the body. Another example is the Haitian patient who comes to the American physician with acute renal failure after being treated by her voodoo priest with kerosene-soaked sugar cubes for a cold; the

patient believes that the medical problems she is experiencing are caused by evil spirits. In addition, representatives of certain ethnic groups may not respond to treatment in the same way that other groups may. Some drugs used to treat tuberculosis such as Isoniazide, for instance, may not work as well in black patients as in whites. Such differences might be caused by what are called genetic polymorphisms. And in the treatment of hypertension, certain medications which focus on blocking the neurohormonal axis such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and beta-blockers may not reduce blood pressure to goal levels as readily in African Americans as in Caucasians when those medicines are used as monotherapy. Some Chinese patients may have an exaggerated response to the beta-blocker propranolol, to which they may exhibit an unusual sensitivity. There are many (Continued on pg 13)

Confusion over new guidelines for blacks taking cholesterol-lowering meds U.S. medical organizations have conflicting guidelines on the use of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs in blacks, a new study finds. Researchers say that about one in four black Americans who are recommended to take a statin under guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association would no longer qualify for such therapy under new guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The USPSTF is an influential government-appointed group whose decisions often influence health care, including insurance coverage. The new study was led by Dr. Venkatesh Murthy of the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. His team noted that while many studies have used artery scans to assess the need for statins by white patients, no such studies have focused on black patients. However, compared with whites, black Americans are at higher risk of developing heart disease linked to plaque buildup in the arteries (“hardening of the arteries”). So, would the new USPSTF guidelines on statin use be accurate for black patients? To find out, Murthy’s team compared statin “eligibility” for more than 2,800 black patients, aged 40 to 75. The study authors reported that about one-quarter of black people who would be recommended to take a statin under the ACC/AHA guidelines wouldn’t be eligible under the new USPSTF advisory. This suggests that the gov-

ernment panel’s guidelines may be less accurate at spotting black patients who need the therapy, the researchers said. Murthy’s group believes that, overall, just 38 percent of high-risk black Americans would get a statin under the USPSTF guidelines, meaning that “significant numbers” of people would miss out on the cholesterol-lowering treatment. What to do? According to the researchers, using scans to measure each patient’s artery calcification levels might help spot patients in need. This type of test has

An NCON Communications Publication

the potential to personalize a patient’s individual need for statin treatment, the authors explained. Two cardiologists agreed. “This study brings us back to the critical need to appreciate the uniqueness of different populations — whether based on gender, race, or ethnicity — and to evaluate

results of trials or impact of guideline recommendations with regard to these differences,” said Dr. Stacey Rosen. She’s vice president of women’s health at Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health in New Hyde Park, N.Y. “We have certainly learned in other clinical areas — cardiovascular disease in women, [high blood pressure] in African Americans, or diabetes in Latinos — that ‘onesize-does-not-fit-all,'” Rosen said. Dr. Satjit Bhusri is a heart specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He

agreed with the researchers that “the use of calcium scoring by CT scan is best for early detection of heart disease; it is specific for each patient, and its benefits for early prevention are immense.” But he believes such testing should be available to all patients, regardless of race. other examples of differences which can affect clinical outcomes between different groups. The main thing is that doctors must realize that the patient must first be assessed according to the cultural, racial, ethnic, and other special characteristics that he or she brings to the clinical setting. It has to be understood that “one size does not fit all”, and that treatment has to be tailored for the individual, or personalized. Once the practitioner has been properly educated about the principles of cultural competence, he should then concentrate on learning the methods of approaching the patient. The most important facet on which to concentrate is effective communication, both non-verbal and verbal. Non-verbal communication refers to elements such as looking the patient in the eye, and expressing an attitude of welcome and genuine interest in the patient’s problem. As Sir William Osler said, “it is more important to consider what sort of patient has a disease, rather than what sort of disease the patient has”. Just the knowledge that the doctor is focusing on YOU can be a tremendous instrument for building trust. Another element of non-verbal communication is shaking hands with the patient. This can provide an initial point of physical contact between doctor and patient and serves as an “ice-breaker”. Verbal communication is important, too. This includes

lively through quick, interesting, and sometimes humorous vignettes that dash back and forth through history. It might also have been confusing – official titles changed through the years – but he keeps readers on track with a good variety of tales, just enough relevant backstory, pictures, and (bonus!) recipes you can try. Surprisingly, this book is quite browse-able and so, whether it’ll sit with your cookbooks or on a shelf with other history tomes, it’s a book you’ll savor in more ways than one. This little bit of history is purely tasty and “The President’s Kitchen Cabinet” is a book you’ll enjoy, of course. elements such as the way the doctor greets the patient. The greeting should always be cheerful, and the salutation should include addressing the patient by the last name, such as, “Good morning, Ms. Jones. I am Dr. Smith.” This immediately shows respect for the patient and verbally indicates the fact that the doctor is interested in the patient. The doctor should not address the patient by his or her first name unless the doctor requests and receives permission to do so. Following the salutation, the doctor should ask the patient for a brief description as to why he or she is there, after which the doctor should explain what the patient should expect to happen such as the performance of a medical history and a physical examination. Knowing what is going to happen puts the patient at ease and makes him or her more comfortable with the physician. This is an excellent way to build trust. I have heard many patients and also some doctors complain about the new instruments of Health Information Technology such as electronic health records (EHR) devices that they feel impose a communications barrier between doctor and patient. Although these instruments increase the efficiency of the doctor-patient encounter and of record-keeping, many think that they impair the person-to-person contact that is so important in building trust. There are many other examples of ways in which trust can be built. Once established, it must be maintained. We will now explore how this can be accomplished.
