On April 6-9, 2017 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., hosted their 83rd Central Regional Conference in downtown Milwaukee. The four-day event drew more than 2,500 attendees, all members of the oldest, African American women-led, Greek letter, community service organization in the U.S. This year's theme was "Confident, Central Region - Committed and Connected," and the conference attendees connected with Milwaukee by being active in a number of community service events in the city. These included volunteering and collecting food at Feeding America; donating blood and tissue samples at Wisconsin Blood Center; or collecting book bags and school supplies for children. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has maintained a presence in Wisconsin for more than 68 years, with six undergraduate chapters and three graduate chapters. Kappa Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., receives '10th District Graduate Chapter of the Year' award
The Men of Kappa Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., were recently recognized for their hard work, service and dedication to the Milwaukee community. The chapter was presented with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Small Chapter of the Year Award. The Chapter of the Year Award recognizes outstanding efforts and accomplishments of Kappa Phi Chapter, in which they played a prominent role as an inspiration and positive influence in the Milwaukee community. The Chapter received the award at the 80th Tenth District Convention at the Holiday Inn Chicago Matteson Conference Center, 500 Holiday Plaza Drive, Matteson, IL. Milwaukee Urban League Guild host 6th Annual Chili Cook-Off

On Saturday, March 25, 2017 The Milwaukee Urban league (MUL) Guild hosted their 6th Annual Chili Cook-Off at the Harley-Davidson University Auditorium, 3800 W. Juneau Ave. The event lived up to its billing as a hot and spicy affair, as some of the best chili chefs in Milwaukee competed for the coveted title of 2017 Milwaukee Urban League Guild Chili Cook-Off Champion. The event was a great success and raised over $2000! George Hinton was crowned 2017 Chili Cook-Off Champion. The second and third prize winners were Corry Joe Biddle and Royce Nash and Lacy Walton, respectively. The first prize winner received a trophy, $100 and a Milwaukee Urban League Guild 2017 Chili CookOff Champion apron. The second prize winner was awarded a trophy, $75 and a 2nd place apron. The third prize winner was honored with a trophy, $50 and a 3rd place apron. The 4th, 5th and 6th place winners each received a chef's cap. It’s one of the foundations of a great nation, community, business or institution. And leadership is also at times without easy answers, setbacks and at a loss for words. But that comes with the job description. As my mother use to say…“if you can’t stand the heat… get out of the kitchen.”

With so many bold promises made on campaign trails, a new administration and Congress are finding that leading and getting things done is much harder. As each week rolls by the path forward and the agenda is becoming dicier. The end game is becoming more distant, cutting deals, working across party lines and the ability to build winning coalitions only looks good on paper. Now that this brand of new leadership or “rubber” has hit the road… stuff is getting really ugly. Talk is certainly cheap when you can blame others for the mess, but now with the power in hand and the numbers to make something happen… well! What is the problem now? To make things more interesting and with future elections looming, countless local constituents have become upset during town halls meetings with elected officials and demanded that their health care and social benefits remain unchanged. These are certainly hot button issues. And in the words of the rapper known as Nelly…“it’s getting hot in here.” It certainly has been some

Climate change: How woke are you? (Part 2) "GOD took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order." - Genesis 2:15, MSG Bible This month’s focus is the issue of climate change. So, what is the difference between climate and weather? The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) notes that weather is the short-term changes we see in temperature, clouds, precipitation, humidity and wind in a region or a city. Weather can vary greatly from one day to the next, or even within the same day. In the morning, the weather can be cloudy or cool; that same afternoon it may be sunny and warm. Climate, on the other hand, of a region or city is its typical or average weather. Climate can be different for different seasons. Climate change, however, is a change in the typical average weather of a region or city. This could be a change in a region’s average annual rainfall, for example. Or it could be a change in a city’s average temperature for a
survival of America’s wildlife. Average temperatures in the U.S. over the last century have already increased by about one degree Fahrenheit. Seven of the top 10 warmest years on record for the contiguous 48 states have occurred since 1998 and 2012 was the warmest year on record.

NASA suggests some causes of climate change are natural. These include changes in Earth’s orbit and in the amount of energy coming from the sun. Ocean changes and volcanic eruptions are also natural causes of climate change. Most scientists think that recent warming can’t be explained by nature alone. These scientists say
it is very likely that most of the warming since the mid1990s is due to the burning of coal, oil and gas. Burning these fuels is how we produce most of the energy we use every day (such as driving cars, heating and cooling our homes, and cooking food). The burning adds heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the air. These gases are called greenhouse gases. This can change the climate of a place. It can also change Earth’s climate. This climate change is also referred to as global warming. Global warming, per the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), is becoming the biggest threat to the long-term
How does this affect wildlife? When there are changes in the timing of natural events, it literally throws wildlife off. Many species take their cues about when to migrate, flower, nest or mate from seasonal changes in temperature, precipitation and daylight. Global warming confuses those signals. The changes in the climate force wildlife to alter life cycle and seasonal events. Sometimes they might get out of sync with other species in their ecosystem or with other natural events. An example given by the NWF is that some animals are laying eggs, migrating or emerging from hibernation much earlier than they used to only to find that the plants or the in-
sects they need for food have not yet emerged. The Milwaukee Board of School Directors unanimously approved a resolution designating all MPS schools as "safe environments" for undocumented students. This new policy outlines the steps the district will take to assure students and families that any actions that might be taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on school grounds will be opposed by all legal means available. "This is a very proud moment for this district and for this community," Superintendent Darienne Driver said. Actions the district will take include: • Creating immigration

Summer Academy promises learning through fun and adventures Students who attend Summer Academy this year will have so much fun that they might not even realize they are learning! This summer program is packed with music, art, robotics, field trips and more. Child care is offered to provide a full day of educational activities in a safe environment with caring, trained instructors. Registration is open at schools across MPS. All school-age children of all abilities who are Milwaukee residents are welcome at any of our schools. Current MPS students may attend at any
school of their choice. Summer Academy is free! Fees may apply for child care. Summer Academy begins June 26. Attendance is especially important for students who need to catch up to stay at grade level. Participation will strengthen skills for all students during the summer. Five arthritis signs every woman should know Over 54 million people, about 23 percent of all adults in the United States, suffer from arthritis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. As sufferers know far too well, having arthritis and other chronic conditions can reduce quality of life and make disease management harder. According to research, the risks for arthritis is not equal among men and women. With the exception of gout, women have a significantly higher risk for nearly all types of arthritis and in particular osteoarthritis of the knees. Unfortunately, because the term “arthritis” refers to more than 100 diseases and conditions affecting the joints, honing in on the underlying cause of common symptoms like aches and pains can be taxing. Could you have arthritis and not know? To help
you return to your regularly scheduled lifestyle, here are 5 signs of arthritis every woman needs to know. 1. Catching Also known as grinding, if joints like your knees or wrists feel like their tendons are tangled or “catching” on another, this is an early symptom of arthritis, Kevin Shea, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Luke’s Health
System in Boise, ID recently told Prevention. 2. Fatigue With rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the immune system attacks the joints, in turn, leaving your body feeling fatigued. A loss of appetite, which can also induce fatigue, can also be an underlying symptom of arthritis. 3. Chronic inflammation “Flare-ups” or a periodic
increase in inflammation is a common symptom of rheumatoid arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation says. Here is how inflammation can look in different areas of the body with RA: • Eyes. Dryness, pain, redness, sensitivity to light and impaired vision • Mouth. Dryness and gum irritation or infection • Skin. Rheumatoid nodules – small lumps under the skin over bony areas • Lungs. Inflammation and scarring that can lead to shortness of breath • Blood Vessels. Inflammation of blood vessels that can lead to damage in the nerves, skin and other organs • Blood. Anemia, a lower than normal number of red blood cells 4. Poor range of motion Less mobile than years before? Can’t seem to reach for the top shelf without diffi-
culty? These range-of-motion issues—when accompanied with pain—often point to arthritis, experts say. 5. Redness and rash Though rare, in some cases, redness and rash may present itself, pointing to a condition called “psoriatic arthritis.” Red, flaky, and scaly in appearance, this inflammatory condition is incurable (but treatable) and may cause flares of joint pain, stiffness, and swelling – especially in the morning hours. Even mild skin psoriasis can have a significant degree of arthritis, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says. What does retirement look like if you haven't saved?
The picture of retirement that many of us have is a post-work period filled with travel and plenty of relaxation. It's a time when you can finally take up a new hobby, sink into the pile of books and enjoy more time with family and friends. The reality is that many haven't been able to save enough money to enjoy this idealized retirement. What might their retirement look like? You may be working for longer than you expected. Many people undergo a period of "phased retirement" and either reduce their hours or start a new part-time job after retiring from a full-time schedule. Even those who don't have a financial need may find that they value the activity and connections work brings to their lives. Without savings, continuing to work might not be a choice, but you can still look for fulfilling opportunities. Continuing within the same profession part-time or taking on related consulting work could be the most financially rewarding route,
if it's an option. Alternatives such as customer service positions with a retailer are popular among some retirees. There are also Internet-based jobs that allow you to work from home. Social Security could be your sole source of income. Retirees who don't have a pension or savings and stop working may find that Social Security is their only income. Your Social Security benefit depends on when you were born, how much you've paid into the program, when you start to take benefits and whether or not you're eligible
for a government pension. Once you start receiving benefits, you'll lock in your monthly amount, although it will adjust to account for inflation. Therefore, deciding when to start taking Social Security benefits is important, as it can impact your income for the rest of your life. Claiming benefits once you reach your full or normal retirement age, 65 to 67 depending on when you were born, is when you'll receive 100 percent of your monthly Social Security benefit. Taking benefits early can lock in a lower rate, while wait-
ing can increase the monthly benefit. In 2017, if you're eligible for the maximum benefit and start claiming at 62, you'll receive about $2,153 per month. If you waited until you were 70 this year, you'll receive about $3,538 per month. You can use the SSA's Retirement Age Calculator to see how taking Social Security early, or waiting, can affect your benefit. You might have to downsize and make lifestyle changes. Moving to an area that has a significantly lower cost of living could mean the difference between living with financial challenges and having a comfortable retirement. Some people look for less expensive areas close to family members or even an expat community in a different country. If you decide to stay in the same area, a smaller home can lower your property taxes and maintenance costs. You can also take any profits from the sale of a larger home and pay off debts or build an investment portfo-
lio. Housing aside, there are many ways to downsize your lifestyle, such as selling a vehicle, shopping at secondhand stores and cutting back on monthly entertainment expenses. One helpful part of aging is you'll be eligible for all sorts of new discounts and benefits. Look online for lists of stores or organizations that offer senior discounts. You can use the National Council on Aging BenefitsCheckUp to see which benefits you might be eligible for based on your ZIP code and personal information. Bottom line: Many aging Americans don't have enough savings to fund their lifestyle through retirement. Deciding when to take Social Security benefits and where to live are two of the most pressing questions on the horizon. No matter what you choose, you may need to supplement your income with part-time work and look for ways to significantly lower your cost of living to enjoy retirement.

Baby Chick Cupcakes
Prep time: 30 minutes Servings: 24 1 package (12 ounces) white confectionary coating wafers 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract 1 box (16 ounces) confectioners’ sugar 1 jar (7 ounces) marshmallow creme 1 teaspoon Sunflower color from McCormick Color from Nature Food Colors 2 tablespoons milk, plus additional (optional) 48 unfrosted mini yellow cupcakes, baked in white paper liners sprinkles (optional) additional McCormick Color from Nature Food Colors (optional) To make broken egg shell pieces: melt coating wafers as directed on package. Spread on large foil-lined baking sheet to 1/4-inch thickness. Refrigerate about 10 minutes, or until firm. Break into small, irregular pieces. Set aside. In large bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add vanilla; mix well. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar, beating until well blended after each addition, frequently scraping sides and bottom of bowl. Beat in marshmallow creme until well blended. In small bowl, stir food color into milk until dissolved. Add colored milk to frosting; beat until light and fluffy. Stir in additional milk, as needed, to reach desired consistency. To decorate cupcakes: spoon frosting into large pastry bag fitted with large round tip. Pipe two dollops of frosting on top of each other to form baby chick. If desired, insert sprinkles into face for eyes and beak. Or tint any remaining frosting with food colors to pipe out eyes and beak. Place coating wafer pieces around bottom of baby chick to resemble broken egg shell.

Overnight Lemon Blueberry Muffin Casserole Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 12 Streusel Topping: 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 2 teaspoons McCormick Cinnamon, Ground 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) cold butter, cut into chunks Casserole: 6 eggs 1 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, milk, divided 1/4 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, granulated sugar, divided 1 teaspoon McCormick Cinnamon, Ground 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes nonstick cooking spray 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon McCormick Pure Lemon Extract 2 cups blueberries, divided To make Streusel Topping: In medium bowl, mix together

brown sugar, flour and cinnamon. Cover. Set aside until ready to assemble in the morning. To make Casserole: In large bowl, mix together eggs, 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup granulated sugar and cinnamon with wire whisk until well blended. Add bread cubes; toss gently to coat. Pour evenly into 13-by-9-inch baking dish sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix together cream cheese, remaining milk and sugar, and lemon extract until well blended. Gently stir in 1 cup blueberries. Spread evenly on top of bread cubes. Top with remaining blueberries. Cover. Refrigerate overnight. Heat oven to 350 F. Remove casserole from refrigerator. Let stand 10-15 minutes. Cut butter into Streusel Topping mixture with pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over casserole. Bake 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 6 Nonstick cooking spray 2 cups all-purpose waffle and baking mix 1 1/3 cups milk 1 egg 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3 teaspoons McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract, divided 1 1/4 teaspoons Sunflower color from McCormick Color from Nature Food Colors, divided 1 teaspoon Berry color from McCormick Color from Nature Food Colors 1/2 teaspoon Sky Blue color from McCormick Color from Nature Food Colors 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar Heat round waffle iron. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix together waffle mix, milk, egg, oil, 2 teaspoons vanilla and 1 teaspoon each sunflower and berry colors until blended. Let batter stand 5 minutes to allow color to fully develop. Pour about 1/3 cup batter onto center of waffle iron. Close lid. Cook about 3 minutes, or until no longer steaming. Carefully remove waffle. Repeat with remaining batter. Cut each waffle into 8 triangles. Set aside. In another medium bowl, stir sky blue color and remaining sunflower color into cream. Add confectioners’ sugar and remaining vanilla; beat with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Spoon into re-sealable plastic bag. Cut piece off one bottom corner. To decorate and serve waffles, place waffle triangles onto serving plates and pipe green colored cream on wide side of each triangle to resemble carrot tops.

Remembering Mary Louise Ellsworth

Louise (Cutler) Ellsworth, age
91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Whitney Place at Natick. She was the wife of Jack Cleland Ellsworth. Married in March of 1947 in Milwaukee, WI, they were just 5 days away from celebrating their 70th anniversary. Mary was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL where her father ran a nursery business named Collahattchee Gardens. It was here her passion for flowers and all things growing from the earth was instilled and nurtured. Watching the sun set over the beaches of Fort Lauderdale left Mary unable to resist all things salmon, blue, and apricot in color, be it fabric, flowers or paint. As the winner of The Miami Herald Spelling Bee, Mary left for Washington, DC on May 31, 1938, at age 12 to represent Florida in the National Spelling Bee. Here she finished 13th in a field of 22 contestants and was given the opportunity to meet President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At age 14 she moved to Milwaukee, WI, where she lived with her maternal grandmother and attended West Division High school. An only child, this was a wonderful opportunity for her to develop a relationship with her maternal cousins Shirley, Jeanne, Alex and Frederick MacDonald. She went on to get her Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Milwaukee Downer College. It was here during a mixer
Mary Louise Ellsworth organized by the school, that she met her husband Jack in 1945 upon his return from World War II. The work she held most important in her life was caring for her family. She chose to be a stay-at-home mother which she did well and with all her heart. She instilled a love of cooking, the English language, all things natural, and a passion for music in all of her children. They will always fondly remember her many proficiencies including sewing, embroidery, needlepoint, piano playing, and rose gardening. Above all, they will miss the taste and aroma of the homemade goodies that filled the house whenever there was family or friend around to share them with. Her love of God and compassion for others inspired hours of volunteerism in the many churches and communities in which she dwelled over her lifetime. Her home was always open to those in need offering a warm meal, comfortable bed and whatever support she could offer to make one’s life better. Many an AFS student, wan-
dering traveler or individual in need of a home crossed her threshold bringing her purpose and years of joy. Over her lifetime, Mary traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia making many friends and memories along the way. She lived a full and blessed life and leaves behind a living legacy of which she would be very proud. In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her children, Jack Ellsworth and his wife Linda of Columbia, SC; Bruce Ellsworth and his partner Cole Burrell of Free Union, VA; Brooke Ellsworth and her husband John Stimson of Delaplane, VA; Chris O’Crowley of Denver, CO; and Gay Crowley and her husband Gene of Sherborn, MA. Mary’s greatest gifts were her grandchildren, Corey and Carrie Ellsworth of Columbia, SC; Tim, Tyler and Mary Lauren O’Crowley of Denver, CO; and Jack, Christopher, and Hannah Crowley, of Sherborn, MA. A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Pilgrim Church, 25 South Main Street, Sherborn, MA. A reception followed immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center Mentoring Program. Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972, top photo) was an American professional baseball second baseman who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. The Dodgers general manager and president, Branch Rickey (bottom photo), signed Robinson and heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, that had relegated black players to the Negro Leagues since the 1880s. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
