GMAR celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act
On Wednesday April 11, 2018, the Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors (GMAR) and city leaders recognize the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act at an event held on the Marquette University campus. Speakers for the event were Mayor Tom Barrett; Alderman Ashanti Hamilton; former Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council member and Commando Fred Reed; civil rights activist Margaret "Peggy" Rozga; Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Dr. Eve Hall; Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council president William Tisdale; GMAR chairwoman Vickie Kelsall; and GMAR president Mike Ruzicka. As part of the news conference, the GMAR presented a check for $12,500 to Housing Resources, Inc., to support their work in preparing Milwaukeeans for successful homeownership. Shorewest Realtors, RE/MAX Realtor 100, the First Weber Foundation, and Century 21 Affiliated each contributed funds to make the donation possible.

Milwaukee Brewers celebrate Home Opening Day 2018 On Monday, April 2, 2018, The Milwaukee Brewers celebrated their home opener of the 2018 baseball season. Despite the chilly conditions for tailgating, it did not dampen the spirits of a full house at Miller Park. Opening day both inside and outside the stadium marked the ceremonial start of spring in the upper Midwest, whether or not the weather wanted to cooperate. Dan and Mike Attanasio (upper left photo), sons of Brewers owners Mark and Debbie Attanasio, sang the national anthem. They carried on the tradition started by their late grandfather, Joe Attanasio, who sang the anthem on Opening Day from the time that the Attanasio family purchased the team. The fans were also introduced to the 2018 Brewers team, including Jeremy Jeffress (lower left photo) seen high-fiving his fellow Brewers coaches and teammates. The first pitch of the season was thrown out by Wisconsin Badgers tight end Troy Fumagalli (lower right photo) with members of the Wisconsin Badgers football team, including head coach Paul Chryst, The Badgers football program set a school record with 13 wins this past season, capped by an Orange Bowl victory.

MPS group gets standing ovation in national talent show
After many weeks of practice and preparation, a group of 12 Milwaukee Public Schools students traveled to Washington, DC to take part in the Turnaround Arts national talent show held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Their performance honoring Frederick Douglass drew cheers and a standing ovation from the audience. The journey began in fall with the composition of an original musical piece. Ja’Rahn Leveston, a teacher from Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts, created and submitted his piece, called “200” in celebration of the 200th birthday of Frederick Douglass. The song is written in the style of the hit musical Hamilton. After receiving the exciting

news that the piece was accepted into the talent show, auditions were begun to select 12 students from the four MPS Turnaround Arts schools – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. African American Immersion School; Lancaster School; Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts; and Sherman Multicultural Arts School. Vigorous fundraising and the work of the MPS Foundation made the trip possible by raising the nearly $13,000 needed to send students and chaperones to Washington. The group visited Frederick Douglass’ home in Virginia, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and had dinner at Bus Boys and Poets, a Langston Hughes-themed (Continued on pg. 9)

North Division High School Classes of '67,'68 and '69 host 50th Year Reunion By: Shirley Davis Scott-Harris, DRE, PhD, Planning Committee Member 1968 North Division 50th Year Reunion We Were There… The year 1968 has been called many things. A special Time Magazine Edition (2018) called it 'the Year that Shaped a Generation,' USA Today (January 15, 2018) stated, “Fifty years later, we still use 1968 to measure the progress of our efforts to address crime and violence, alleviate racism and poverty, resist war and preserve peace, and build a more perfect union and world." In the spring of 1968, the students at North Division were active participants in protests that erupted throughout Milwaukee. The protests, centered around racial inequality and discrimination, eventually culminated in a student walkout, from North Division High School to the MPS Central Office, organized and led by the late Father James Groppi. The students in the 1968 Class of North Division were numbered with the young people who shaped a generation and shared the title of “baby boomers” because of the large surge in population after World War II. As the 1968 Class of North Division High School commenced on their respective journeys after graduation, some of the students were nostalgic at what they were leaving behind. Some of the students were forward-looking and expedient as they embarked on the odyssey of their lives, eager to embrace the responsibilities that would rest on their shoulders while they pursued employment opportunities, sought marriage, or attended college, often as first-generation college students.
The impact that North Division High School has had on the community has been a positive one, producing influential leaders such as Golda Meir, judge and activist Vel Phillips, Rep. Annette Polly Williams, Alderman Marlene Johnson, Singer Harvey Scales, Dr. Howard Fuller, Milwaukee’s first African American Fire Captain Donald Jackson, Police Chief Arthur Jones, Brigadier General Robert Cocroft, and Acting Mayor Marvin E. Pratt. Congresswoman Gwen Moore,
who graduated in 1969, will be the keynote speaker at the 50th Year Class Reunion for 1968 (along with the classes of 1967 and 1969) We will have a lot to talk about at our 50th Year Reunion, sharing stories of the civil rights movement that was prevalent nationwide, as we became eye-witnesses to the burning of our inner city. During our last year of high school, we lost one of our most prolific moral leaders when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. The black power movement, which demonstrated an expression of Black pride, was voiced in unison with the slogan, “We’re Black and We’re Proud.” We will "shoot the breeze” about Robert F. Kennedy, a Democratic presidential candidate, who was killed. (Continued on pg. 10)

The Counseling Corner
By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th
National Autism Awareness Month (Week Three) This writer mentioned in the initial article of this series that the motivation for this series came from a co-worker whose grandson was diagnosed with autism. When my co-worker spoke with her daughter regarding her grandson’s perceived developmental delays, she immediately began looking for answers for her son’s condition. Up to this point, the pediatrician dismissed the daughter’s concerns indicating that her son may just be slow in speaking. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, but is about 4.5 times more common among boys than among girls. If you are concerned or think your
child may have ASD or you think there could be a problem with the way your child plays, learns, speaks, or acts, the CDC suggests that you contact your child’s doctor and share your concerns. If you or your doctor are still concerned, ask the doctor for a referral to a specialist who can do a more in-depth evaluation of your child. Further, the CDC recommends calling your state’s public early childhood system to request a free evaluation to find out if your child qualifies for intervention services. This is sometimes called a Child Find evaluation. You do not need to wait for a doctor’s referral or a medical diagnosis to make this call. If your child is not 3 years
old, contact Wisconsin’s early intervention system: Wisconsin Department of Health Services Bureau of Long Term Support Division of Long Term Care 608-267-3270 https://www.dhs. wisconsin.gov/birthto3/ index.htm If your child is 3 years old or older, contact your local public school system. The CDC recommends that even if your child is not yet old enough for kindergarten or enrolled in a public school, call your local elementary school or board of education and ask to speak with someone who can help you have your child evaluated. If you’re not sure who to contact, call the Early Child-
hood Technical Assistance at 919-962-2001 or visit the Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (ECTA) website at: http://ectacenter. org/contact/619coord.asp. The CDC reiterates that research has shown that early intervention services can greatly improve a child’s development. In order to make sure your child reaches his or her full potential, it is important to get help for ASD as soon as possible. Since my little friend has been diagnosed with having autism, his mother has become her son’s most powerful advocate. With the help of early intervention therapists, her son is making great strides, speaking a few words, and expressing his desires, needs and wants more often with words and gestures. He
has already met his teachers and toured the elementary school to prepare him for kindergarten. Rust College
Rust College - Where tomorrow’s leaders are students today Rust College is a historically black liberal arts college located at 150 Rust Avenue, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Located approximately 35 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, it is the second-oldest private college in the state. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, it is one of ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) founded before 1868 that is still operating. Rust was founded on November 24, 1866 by Northern missionaries with a group called the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1870, the college was chartered as Shaw University in 1870, honoring the Reverend S. O. Shaw, who made a gift of $10,000 to the institution which, is the equivalent of approximately $190,000 in 2018. In 1892, to avoid confusion with Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, the institution changed its name to Rust University—a tribute to Rev. Richard S. Rust of Cincinnati, Ohio, the secretary of the Freedman’s Aid Society. In 1915, the institution assumed the name Rust College. The current president is Dr. David L. Beckley and the enrolled full-time student population is more than 1000. Rust College offers degrees in more than 20 different areas of study. The college is dedicated to serve their students with a variety of academic preparations, through instruction in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, business, technology, and community services. Rust recognizes the threefold functions of education as being teaching, research, and community service, with its primary focus on teaching. It offers a well-rounded program designed to acquaint students with cultural, moral, and spiritual values, both in theory and in practice. Rust College has five residential halls on the campus with two men-only dorms: Gross Hall (92 students) and Davage-Smith Hall (276 students); and three dorms that are reserved for women only: Wiff Hall (92 students), E.L. Rust (196 students), and Elzy Hall (200 students). A full time professional lives in each building and is responsible for the educational and operational functions of the residence hall. Rules governing residential living are explained in the Student and Residential Life Handbooks. Besides academics, Rust College offers a wide variety of experiences and activities to their student body. The

ness. The college participates in the following intercollegiate sports: basketball, tennis, cross-country, track and field, cheerleading, women’s
fast pitch softball, and volleyball. There are also several national Greek chapters that the college has authorized to operate on campus, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Annual tuition (full time) is $9,600 (fall and spring semesters only) or $4,743 per semester. Annual room and board is $4,000 (fall and spring semesters only) or
$2,000 per semester. Rust College offers several scholarships to eligible students. All scholarships are based upon availability of funding. Rust College provides an opportunity for education to all regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin or ethnic background. MPS students honored for Women’s History essays
To honor Women’s History Month, MPS students were invited to submit essays sharing the stories of Wisconsin women. Winners received cash awards and certificates and were announced at the University of Wisconsin– Milwaukee Hefter Conference Center on March 15. The contest is designed to shine a light on the lives of Wisconsin women, who have often remained invisible. The purpose of the essays is to explore the public roles and private lives of women and to expand the historical record. The contest rules encourage students to interview or communicate with their subjects, when possible,
to uncover new information and acquire new perspectives. “The contest brings to light many underrepresented stories of women,” said Katherine Katter, English Department Chair at Golda Meir High School. “In some cases, students add to the historic record with original research (drawn from interviews) of women in their own communities—women who are truly unsung heroes.” Congratulations to all our winners! restaurant and book store. In addition to the talent show at the Kennedy Center, students performed three times while in Washington – the first being flash mob-style at the airport. The group also performed at Frederick Douglass’ home and by request at the Bus Boys and Poets restaurant with other groups from the talent show. “These students were on fire with passion for this piece and inspired by being in DC, where much of this history was made,” said Kari Hanson, MPS Turnaround Arts Manager. “They made us proud with their performance and their behavior – they were attentive, responsible, kind, and so open-minded. There was a group cohesion unlike any other group there. We made quite an impression with the Turnaround Arts national community.” Turnaround Arts was initiated by the Obama Administration and provides arts support in high-need schools. It offers innovative arts, dance, theater and music programs; arts integration across subject areas; arts resources; musical instruments; and high-profile artist mentors. Turnaround Arts has improved attendance, math scores, and reading scores, and has decreased suspensions across participating schools nationwide. MPS is grateful to the many donors who made this trip possible, as well as the families, schools, teachers, and staff who supported this event. It was truly a lifetime experience for 12 talented students.

The year 1968 had a profound impact on the American value and belief systems. Fifty years after high school, the classes of 1967, 1968 and 1969 have come full circle. We are anticipating a reunion of old friends and acquaintances. And yes, as we reminisce about 1968, we will have much to talk about as we measure the progress that has been made culturally, socially, politically and religiously from 1968 to 2018, a fifty-year span.

Stay on top of your health with a checkup Checkups are a way to make sure you stay healthy. Going to the doctor is important, even if you don’t feel sick. Adults and kids 3 years of age and older should see their Primary Care Provider (PCP) once a year. PCPs are the main health care professionals who take care of you. Kids under age 3 may need more checkups and immunizations. Talk to your child’s PCP about how often your child should have checkups. What to expect at the appointment. At this visit, your PCP may check your heart and lungs, hearing, vision and Body Mass Index (BMI). For kids, expect a full exam and a height, weight, vision and hearing check. Talk about any health or behavior changes in your child and ask if other tests or shots are needed. Reminder: Talk to your PCP about completing all shots and lead screening before your child turns 2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask your PCP what blood tests are right for you. Tests such as white blood cell count, blood sugar and cholesterol may be recommended. If you take prescribed medications, make sure to take them over a longer period of time. This will help your PCP check for side effects and make sure the medicine is working. If you

have high blood pressure that needs to be managed, your PCP will help you make sure you’re taking the right medications in the right way. If you have questions for your PCP, remember to write them down and take them to your checkup. Family health history is important, too. If there are any new conditions or diseases that have occurred in your close relatives since your last visit, let your PCP know. Family history might influence your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or

‘Strong black man’ hurts black men with mental health issues To be African American, male, and mentally ill is to face a particular cultural medical challenge. Emotional vulnerability is a prerequisite for good mental health – and admitting feelings of fear, pain, sadness, or panic is a condition for the diagnosis of a mental disorder. Yet many African American men are brought up in a culture that equates psychiatric conditions with personal weakness. The result is generations of African American men whose mental health problems go unrecognized or untreated. The stigma and unhealthy gender socialization present one of the biggest hurdles to getting African Americans in front of a therapist, says

trauma and marginalization in a white person’s world. As one African American writer put it, that toxic masculinity has “created pernicious and self-destructive cultural norm.” African Americans’ historical mistrust of the medical establishment compounds the stigma that envelopes mental illness within the black community. suicide at nearly twice the rate as their white male peers, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some clinicians have begun to call for concerted efforts to change attitudes – both on the part of patients as well among mental health therapists. For the latter, it may require listening for symptoms with culturally keener ears. For example, Williams says African American men who are depressed may express it as more socially acceptable anger instead of sadness. Boosting the abysmal lack of African American mental health therapists would help, too. But much of the healing will have to come from within the black communities themselves. Celebrities like Jay-Z have begun chipping away at the stigma, opening the way to nurture current and future generations of African American men. In a recent interview, Jay-Z called for more mental health therapy for children so they can benefit the way he has. He derided the tendency by African Americans to minimize or dismiss psychological distress. His interviewer, CNN’s Van Jones, added that “as scared as black folks are of the cops, we’re even more scared of therapists.”

YOU e “ With the spring season officially underway, we all know what that means: it’s time to do some spring cleaning! This is a great time of year to get organized, especially after spending the chilly winter months indoors, but the key focus when spring cleaning is safety. If you’re wondering how you can go about completing your spring cleaning list safely, be sure to follow these spring cleaning safety tips for seniors. Top tips There’s nothing quite like the sunny weather to motivate us to get organized this spring, and to help you get started, here’s our top five spring cleaning safety tips for seniors: 1. Take your time. Set plenty of time aside to do some spring cleaning. The key is finding a balance: don’t let tasks drag on, but don’t feel like you have to get everything done in one weekend, either. 2. Check the fridge and medicine cabinet. Although they are easy to overlook, both the refrigerator and medicine cabinets can be hotspots for expired products. Be sure to throw away all expired food items and medications, especially those that are no longer prescribed to you. 3. Double-check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are easy to ignore until there’s an emergency. Make sure that there are fresh batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. 4. Prep for emergencies. It’s a good idea to go over what to do in case of an emergency, such as a power outage or a house fire, every spring to help keep the plan fresh in your mind. 5. Make it fun! Enlist the help of your children, grandchildren or friends to add a social component. Not only can they help you move heavy objects and furniture, but they can also make tasks seem less tedious and more fun.
Fall-proofing your home While spring cleaning, it’s important that you check your home for anything that may be increasing your risk of falling. A startling 60 percent of falls happen within the home, but luckily, many of these falls can be prevented by fall-proofing your home: 1. Clear out the clutter. Especially after being cooped up during the long winter months, there could be a lot of overlooked clutter in your home. Clear each room of clutter or anything else that could trip you, such as electrical cords and area rugs. Consider doubling your space by adding garage racks. 2. Add safety supports. Non-slip mats are probably the easiest and most affordable way to reduce your risk of falls, especially in the bathroom where most inhome falls occur. A kitchen is another great place to have these mats in case any water gets onto the slippery floor. 3. Check your stairs for safety. If you cannot have all the essential rooms on a single floor, attach non-slip treads to each step in your home and add sturdy handrails so you have plenty of support when going up and down the stairs. 4. Refurbish furniture and flooring. Replace any unsteady furniture and rearrange the layout of each room so that you can easily move around your home. Make sure that all the floors are even and that carpets are securely attached to the floor. 5. Improve lighting. Dim lighting greatly increases your risk of falling, so replace dim bulbs with brighter, more efficient bulbs. It’s also a good idea to add nightlights to the hallways so you can safely move around your home during the night. It’s important to remember that spring cleaning isn’t just about cleaning. Just follow these tips and your home will be both clean and safe in no time!

brownie recipe — but did you know you could make it even better by
adding a simple, familiar ingredient? With a few expert tips from Buddy Valastro, author and star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” you can take your sweet treats from good to great in no time.
n
Start with Quality Ingredients — When you start with better ingredients, you end up with a better cookie or brownie. Use real butter, high-quality vanilla and great tasting chocolate. Here, Buddy shares some of his favorite recipes that use M&M’S candies to add an extra special touch to family favorites — making them even better.
n
Chill the Dough — Leaving cookie dough in the refrigerator gives it more body and results in a fuller and better tasting cookie. Plan ahead so you can refrigerate your dough at least one hour — or, even better, overnight.
n
Keep It Uniform — Use a small ice cream scoop to keep your cookies the same size. This not only helps them look professional, but bake up evenly and consistently.

Pans Matter — Bake cookies on light-colored, non-insulated cookie sheets without sides. Metal pans will cook brownies faster than glass pans, which means cooking times will vary. Start checking your brownies early to test if they’re ready and prevent over baking. You can find more sweet baking tips and recipes at www.facebook.com/mms.

Dael Orlandersmith: A ‘theater worker’ who writes the truth By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times Others have described Dael Orlandersmith as an actress, a performer, a playwright, a poet. From her own viewpoint, she is simply ‘a theater worker’. That is, she is someone who applies their talents to create products for public consumption to be delivered via the stage. The award-winning, self-described ‘theater worker’ is in Milwaukee to present Until the Flood, her oneact, one-woman play that explores the emotional reactions of people in and around greater St. Louis in the aftermath of the 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown. Brown was an unarmed, African American teen from the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, MO, a predominately black town with an all-white police force. Born Donna Dael Theresa Orlander Smith Brown in 1959, she grew up in a housing project in East Harlem, NY. Her father died when she was a child. Her mother sent her to Roman Catholic schools through high school, despite the economic hardship that placed on the household. Dael grew up surrounded by neighborhood drugs and violence. She sought refuge from the chaos in reading, writing, music and attending acting
Dael Orlandersmith Photo by Kevin Berne classes. During her teens, Dael became involved with the Nuyorican Poets Café, a performance venue in the Alphabet City area of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Its co-founder, Rutgers University professor and poet Miguel Algarin, explained the venue’s philosophy: “We must listen to one another. We must respect one another’s habits; and we must share the truth and the integrity that the voice of the poet so generously provides.” The Nuyorican Poets Café has been described as “the most integrated spot on the planet” and claims to be the birthplace of the New York poetry slam movement. The Nuyorican exposure helped to light Dael’s artistic fires. After high school grad-
Wisconsin African American Women’s Center
uation, she briefly attended Hunter College, but soon left to study acting at HB Studio and the Actors Studio. She also sharpened her playwriting skills at the Sundance Theater Laboratory, established by Oscar-winning actor-director Robert Redford in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dael started writing her own plays out of frustration with existing theater fare. “I didn’t fit the mold for most theater roles of the time,” she said. “I was always taller and bigger than the other female actors. Also, I don’t sing and dance. When it came to film and stage work in the 70s and 80s, the typical
roles portrayed drug dealers, pimps and ‘hoes’. There aren’t that many ways you can say ‘hoe’. I started writing plays in which attributes like race, age and gender were irrelevant.” Dael’s first commercially successful play, Beauty’s Daughter, debuted in 1995. As both writer and actor, she told the story of a young woman coming of age in Harlem and the challenges she faces in life, including growing up with an alcoholic mother. The work earned her an Obie Award for Best Off-Broadway play of the season. One of Dael’s most wellknown works is Yellowman, one of her first plays written for more than one character. The play is the story of two African Americans – a light-skinned male and a dark-skinned female – and explores the phenomenon of ‘colorism’, a form of racism practiced within some segments of the African American community. The play earned a 2002 Pulitzer Prize nomination for Best Drama. A recurring theme in much of Dael’s work is truth – not necessarily ‘the truth’, but truth as an element of humanity. She readily admits
that truth can have a dark side that makes some people uncomfortable. “My role as a writer is to be a universalist and maintain a sense of boundaries,” she explained. “The same things that repel are the same things that attract and unite. Not all theater is about being entertained unconditionally. Oftentimes, people come to the theater seeking an individual sense of justice at the expense of someone else’s truth. “I don’t deal in giving or sending messages. My job as a theater worker is to present a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, without judgment. Your job as the audience is to come with an open mind and take what you choose to take from the work.” One thing is certain. Dael Orlandersmith is not about the business of telling you what to think. But she will invite you – challenge you— to think for yourself. "Until the Flood" is playing through April 22, 2018 at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's Stiemke Studio.
