Milwaukee Brewers celebrate 71st anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier
On Monday, April 15, 2019, The Milwaukee Brewers celebrated the 71st anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier during their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. As part of the celebration, players donned jerseys sporting the number 42. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Brian Diggs(center), Milwaukee's Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship winner. Brian is a Milwaukee native and junior at UW-Whitewater majoring in finance. Brian is an active member on campus, serving as student leader in several organization such as the Warhawk Ambassadors. Additionally, he continues to spend time volunteering at Running Rebels. Salvation Army hosts "A Day Just for You" women's free resource fair On Saturday, April 13, 2019, The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County hosted a free resource fair for women entitled, "A Day Just for You!" at the Salvation Army branch, 5880 N. 60th Street. The event offered the attendees a chance for escape from their normal routine and included activities, workshops, speakers and a resource fair with a number of local organizations on hand offering information on health, education, safety, spiritual outreach, lifestyles, and much more.

Olive Missionary Baptist Church family gathered together to say good-bye to their Pastor and First Lady of 22 years, Rev. John K. Patterson and First Lady Barbara Patterson(left photo), at Mt. Olive MBC, 5277 N. 36th St. Many church members and members of the community came out to pay their respects to Rev. Patterson, who has spent thirty-four years in ministry proclaiming God's Good Word. Happy Sweet 16th Birthday Princess Tranaysia Hopkins

On Saturday, March 9, 2019, Tranaysia Hopkins was princess for a day as she celebrated her sweet 16th birthday party at Court Lanes North, 4707 W. Mill Rd. Tranaysia was joined by family and friends who joined her for dinner, cake, presents, a rose presentation, dancing and partying. Tranaysia's father is André Hopkins, and her mother, Tammy Higgins-Hopkins, is a retention specialist at Sutherland Global Services. Tranaysia, a junior at Golda Meir, is an honor student. She plans to attend an Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for nursing.
Suspect arrested in Louisiana black church arson cases The first fire engulfed St. Mary Baptist Church in late March, incinerating nearly everything that stood within the historically black church. Pews turned to ash, and the brick walls burned so hot that they collapsed into piles of smoldering rubble in Port Barre. Then another black church in St. Landry Parish burned, and then another — three in a span of 10 days, sending black communities into a panic and authorities racing to stop an arsonist from destroying another house of worship. Law enforcement in southern Louisiana found their suspect close to home: Holden Matthews, the son of a parish sheriff ’s deputy. Matthews, 21, was arrested Wednesday, April 10, 2019, and charged with three arson counts amid fears the arson was motivated by hate. “It has been especially painful because it reminds us of a very dark past of intimidation and fear,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said at a news conference. Matthews is the son of St. Landry Parish Sheriff ’s Deputy Roy Matthews, who was “shocked and hurt” at the news of the arrest, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said. Guidroz rebuffed earlier reports that Matthews was taken into custody by his own father. That is false, he said from the podium. “This case was solved with boots on the ground and butts in the air,” Guidroz said, though he added Roy Matthews helped direct his
Landry Parish in the 10-day span. A fourth fire March 31 was reported more than 200 miles away at the predominantly white Vivian United Pentecostal Church in Caddo Parish, LA, but authorities have not publicly linked that fire to Matthews.
For some, the recent fires recall a dark history of attacks and threats against black churches in the South. During Reconstruction and the civil rights movement, black churches were targeted with fires, bombings and threats.

Authorities said they arrested Matthews within 24 hours of identifying him and moved quickly out of fear he would strike another church. Matthews was interested in “black metal” music, authorities said, which has been linked to notorious church fires in Norway. The three arson charges each carry a maximum sentence of 15 years, Browning said. Matthews’s mother and father did not immediately return a request for comment.

Harry Richard’s church was the second to burn. On Thursday, April 11, he embraced Opelousas Police Chief Martin McClendon in a warm hug after the conference. “I felt relieved knowing that our congregation didn’t have to worry anymore,” said Richard, a pastor at Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas, which was nearly destroyed on April 2. “They are my main concern. I was reassured that law enforcement is on our side.” Authorities said they were confident Matthews was the arsonist and that his arrest brings to a close a row of church burnings that sent waves of panic across southern Louisiana. On March 26, flames annihilated St. Mary Baptist Church. Days later, a blaze struck Greater Union Baptist Church. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Opelousas burned April 4, consuming the church’s interior. It was the third predominantly black church to burn down in St.

Tiger Woods shook up golf at the Masters, Russell Wilson becomes it might be just the beginning NFL’s highest paid player Jack Nicklaus was fishing in the Bahamas on Sunday, April 14, 2019, as Tiger Woods resumed circling him in the quest for Nicklaus’s record of 18 major golf championships. But in his news conference after winning the Masters for his 15th major title, Woods didn’t sound exactly bloodthirsty. “I’m sure that I’ll probably think of it going down the road,” Woods said, referring to Nicklaus’s 18 victories at golf ’s four major tournaments. “Maybe. Maybe not. But right now, it’s a little soon, and I’m just enjoying 15.” Then again, Woods didn’t have to say much. His clubs had delivered a convincing argument that he is “trending in the right direction,” as Woods is fond of saying. Tony Finau, who was grouped with Woods in the final round, was more succinct. “From what I saw today,” Finau said Sunday, “obviously he’s not going anywhere.”

Wilson posted a video on social media early Tuesday, April 16, 2019, saying, “Seattle, we got a deal,” shortly after agreeing to a $140 million, four-year extension with the Seahawks, his agent Mark Rodgers said. Wilson’s new deal runs through the 2023 season and includes a $65 million signing bonus, a no-trade clause and $107 million in guaranteed money. Wilson’s per year average of $35 million tops Aaron Rodgers’s average annual salary of $33.5 million as part of the $134 million extension he signed last year with the Green Bay Packers. Wilson’s current $87.6 million, four-year deal was signed at the beginning of training camp in 2015 and was set to expire after next season. “Russell’s goal and his hope was that he would continue his career with the Seahawks and continue to bring championships to this town,” his agent said. “He believes there is still unfinished business, and he is looking forward to pursuing that without having to worry about contracts and his future.” Wilson, 30, had set a midnight deadline for a new deal with Seattle. Even if he played out 2019 under his current deal, Seattle could have used the franchise tag if needed to keep him under contract through 2020 and 2021 at a reasonable price by quarterback standards. But the extension allows Seattle to budget for the future knowing how to work with Wilson’s hefty paycheck in the years ahead and build a contender around him.

Spring is here, and it's time to fall in love with our hometowns again. Everything is lush and green, Easter is days away, and those who've moved away are coming home to visit loved ones and celebrate the holidays. With family and spring rituals in the spotlight, it's the time of year that people really appreciate their communities the most. But even so, there are plenty of things we take for granted. Every community has Easter eggs. They're those monuments, natural features, old buildings, or quirky businesses that create a sense of place. When we celebrate them, we can help ignite the kind of community spirit that helps places bloom and become more vibrant. An Easter egg might be something you're used to and rarely notice, like a 200-yearold church or a beautiful riverfront park or a restaurant hidden away that serves award-winning barbecue and plays great bluegrass music. The point is that it's 'hidden in plain sight' but as you go about your busy life, you kind of don't notice it.
Finding and celebrating your town's Easter eggs is just a matter of getting in the right mindset. A few tips: Stay positive. Spread the good news about your community. All too often, we tend to look at our communities with an eye for what is going wrong. Focus on what is going right instead. Talk up your community to friends and family. If you're on social media, post a picture of a beautiful spot or the crowd at the local fish fry or flower festival. By staying positive, you can inspire others to feel good about where they live also. More people will get out and about, and others will be attracted to the community as well. Notice what you normally take for granted. What features does your town have that you've gotten used to,
but that are truly unique and special? Is there something you drive by every day on your way to work that's commonplace to you but might be delightful or charming to a visitor? When you've lived somewhere for a while, you quit noticing what's great. Open your eyes and look around. Maybe there's a country store that sells homemade jams you could serve at Easter dinner, or a park you could take the grandkids to for a picnic. Try to find one Easter egg a day for the next week. Each day, walk through a historic site, pop into a boutique or museum, or take the family to a locally owned restaurant. Everyone is busy but even spending 30 minutes appreciating an "Easter egg" will brighten up your day. Make your "egg hunt" public. For example, if you belong to a local Facebook page or other social media group, make a post asking others to share their favorite local "Easter eggs." See how many responses you can get. Meditations for the Easter Season (Week 3)
“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’” - Luke 24:6-7
This Week’s Meditation: Jesus Is Risen! Luke 24:1-12 Jesus died in Jerusalem when the procurator of Judea was Pontius Pilate; at the same time Caiaphas was the high priest (see John 11:49; 18:13) and Herod Antipas was the tetrarch of Galilee and Perea (Luke 23:7ff). A “tetrarch” in Greco-Roman antiquity, is the ruler of a principality; originally the ruler of one-quarter of a region or province. After the death of Herod, the Great, his realm was shared among his three sons: the chief part, including Judaea, Samaria, fell to Archelaus; Philip received the northeast of the
realm and was called tetrarch; and Galilee was given to Herod Antipas, who also was called tetrarch. (Source: Britannica Encyclopedia) All four gospels attest to the importance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and all four gospels record the resurrection and the women at the tomb. (See Matthew 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12 and John 20:1-13.) On the third day after Jesus’ death, the women came to Jesus’ tomb with spices to anoint Jesus’ body. The women were stunned to see the stone in front of Jesus’ tomb had been rolled away. Upon entering, they realized that Jesus’ body was not there. While wondering the meaning of these things, there was an angelic visitation in the form of two men who appeared. Angelic visitations in Scripture alert the reader to a profound event taking place
in Scripture. Frightened, the women bowed down to the ground but the angelic men asked them why they were looking for the living among the dead. In Scripture, people often reacted with fear to the unknown or unfamiliar. The angelic beings confirmed the story that Jesus had risen: “He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee…” (Luke 24:6.) When the women returned from the tomb they reported Jesus’ resurrection to the disciples (minus Judas who had hung himself, see Mat-
thew 27:3-5), of what had happened. After hearing the extraordinary events that took place at the tomb, the disciples did not believe the women and thought the women’s story was something they perhaps made up. Peter, one of the earliest and most prominent disciples of Jesus, ran to the tomb of Jesus and saw the grave clothes that once encircled the body of Jesus lying there. Peter left the tomb perhaps thinking within himself ‘what just happened?’ The crucifixion of Christ demonstrated God’s love and holiness. The resurrection of Jesus Christ – or the miracle that occurred at Easter, is at the heart of the Christian message and faith. This Week’s Reflection: As you and your prayer partner reflect on the greatness of God’s love for you, take turns praising God for the amazing grace of God of offering His Son as our sac-

(Even better if you make it a contest with a small giveaway to motivate people to contribute.) Or extend a blanket invitation for the community to join you for a short day hike at a local nature preserve or a meet-up at a local landmark—this is a good way to help other citizens appreciate local hidden gems, too. Arrange to make a neglected bright spot a bit brighter. Is there a city landmark that's looking a little dilapidated and could use a little TLC? Consider hosting a clean-up day. People can volunteer to mulch and plant flowers or maybe even apply a fresh coat of paint. If you volunteer to spearhead the event (and of course get the proper permissions or permits), you can always recruit help from local youth groups or school Beta clubs. Look out for new things that could become Easter eggs of the future. For example, you might have a large blank wall that could be turned into a mural that celebrates your town. Or there might be an old warehouse or factory with great bones that could be repurposed as a local art gallery or a cool restaurant. When you decide to look at your community with fresh eyes, it changes everything.

MPS students promote peace through United Nations world fair Students from 13 MPS schools took charge of the UWM Panther Arena on April 11 to share their knowledge of countries across the globe. Student displays included photos, maps, and important facts about each country and culture. Projects dug deep to explore the strengths and challenges of each nation and the role each country plays in its region or continent. The world fair was the culmination of the year’s United Nations Schools of International Learning (UNSIL) program, which is implemented in 13 MPS schools. The highlight of the day was a series of student performances that included African drumming, traditional
songs, and a multicultural fashion show. Students had the chance to show pride in their roots by wearing traditional dress from their cultures. Schools in the UNSIL program serve students from diverse nationalities, languages, and cultures. Students at these 13 schools speak 35 different languages. Through the UNSIL curriculum, elementary and

middle school students are researching and learning about countries and world issues. The program promotes cultural awareness and develops skills needed in a global setting. Each year of the program expands upon the previous year’s work and moves students along a spectrum from studying to analyzing to taking action.

New Evelyn Patricia Terry exhibition opens April 28 at Lynden Sculpture Garden
The new show entitled "America’s Favor/Guests Who Came To Dinner (And Stayed!)" will feature new and old pieces Evelyn Patricia Terry: America’s Favor/Guests Who Came to Dinner (and Stayed!) opens at the Lynden Sculpture Garden on Sunday, April 28, 2019 with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. “America”—from its origins to present day news reports of racial and ethnic interactions--is a recurrent theme in Terry’s work. Over the course of more than fifty years, she has made several bodies of work that address the “conundrum of co-existence that repeatedly occupies the news, my thoughts, and many conversations.” In America’s Favor/Guests Who Came to Dinner (and Stayed!), the most recent in a series of exhibitions on the theme, Terry brings together different bodies of work: an iconic table installation, artist books, and mixed media works that layer drawings and other forms of mark-making on sewn rag paper pieces. In the rear of the building, Terry will be exhibiting nine works from her Play the Race Card series. The series dates from 2006-7, when Terry be-

Focusing on two politically and emotionally charged color groupings, “red, black and green” and “red, white and blue,” on a backdrop of other colors, this work promotes race conversations as commonplace topics like weather--absent the political biases, empowerment drain, and emotional damage harbored. Ascension St. Joseph continues work to improve health equity New services and programs continue to be added at Ascension St. Joseph while Ascension Wisconsin continues to formulate a plan to improve the health of residents in the Sherman Park and West Burleigh Street neighborhoods. Over the last eight months, Ascension Wisconsin has been listening to local stakeholders through patient interviews, community conversations, a Community Health Needs Assessment and 161 interviews with individuals, as well as community organizations. The information gathered from these interviews and community engagement will help guide how Ascension St. Joseph integrates traditional healthcare services with non-healthcare programs and services that have an impact on the physical, mental, and financial health and well-being of individuals and the community.
