On Monday April 11, 2017 The Milwaukee Times presented the 2017 Louvenia Johnson Scholarship recipients with their scholarship checks. The presentation was held at the Milwaukee Urban League office, 435 West North Ave. The Louvenia Johnson Journalism Scholarship was started in 1988 by Milwaukee Times co-founder, the late Louvenia Johnson, who initially started the scholarship with her retirement funds from Social Security, to assist college-bound high school graduates who wished to pursue careers in print and broadcast journalism. The scholarship program has grown over the years to now include students who are looking to pursue careers in communications, multimedia, healthcare and law. Pictured at the presentation are (back row, from left) Milwaukee Times Publisher Lynda Jackson Conyers; N'namdi Carter; Montae Brown-Crawford; Nathan Gollop; Mohamed Mursal; Michael Green; Milwaukee Urban League education and training Director Greg Fanning; (front row, from left) Savanna Samuels; Reniqua Brown; Milwaukee Urban League president and CEO Dr. Eve Hall; and Siarah Jones. Happy 99th Birthday Maggie Vance Maggie “Idea” Vance (center) celebrated her 99th birthday on Saturday April 15, 2017 with family and friends. She was born in Wilmot, AR on April 17, 1918. She moved to Milwaukee WI in 1949. She held various jobs through the years including day work, at nursing homes, and in the dietary department at Mt Sinai Hospital. She was very active in her community, she went door to door in the 1950’s and 60’s working on voter registration. She was a member at Philadelphia MBC under the late Rev. H. Henderson; she was a member of Genesis MBC under Rev. A.L. Douglas Jr. and is presently a member of Greater Love MBC under Pastor Frank Ballantine. When she first moved to Milwaukee in the late 40’s she lived on 7th Street. She moved on 23rd and Walnut Street in the late 50’s where she purchased 2 homes and moved her daughter and 6 children into one of the homes and she lived in the other. She lost her only daughter in July of 1972 in a car/train accident. Without any hesitation she moved into the home with the 6 children and got them to adulthood. As you can see Maggie has accomplished a lot with only a 5th grade education and the Lord on her side. Three generations of her family were present to help her celebrate.

Remembering Arthur T. Malone rthur T. Malone

found peace April 14, 2017 at age 81. Beloved husband of Sandra Dercole, in June, 1978 the two were married. There were two children of this marriage: Jeffrey (Karen) Dercole, and Kim Chaffin. In May, 1958 Art married the late Carole Thomas. To this union were born four children: the late David (Nancy), Paul (Michele), Stephan, Pamela and stepson Jumaane Cheatham (Kim). Dear brother of Iris Young. He was preceded in death by his parents: Taft Malone, Sr. and Bertha (Redmond); two sisters, Barbara Scott and Essie Sprewer; two brothers, William (Carolyn) Malone and Taft (Karen) Malone, Jr. Art was further survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. Arthur was the owner and master plumber of Malone’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. In 2016, he celebrated 43 years in business. His journey to becoming a plumber was not without challenges. Art applied for a plumb-

Arthur Malone ing apprenticeship in 1958 and was placed on the waiting list. He encountered discrimination in being placed as an apprentice and was requested to testify before the Wisconsin Judiciary Committee investigating discrimination in apprenticeship programs. After testifying, in 1964, Art became the first African American plumbing apprentice in the State of Wisconsin. He began his apprenticeship with E.D. Wesley Company on Milwaukee’s South Side. In 1969, Art obtained his journeyman plumber's license. In 1973, he obtained

his master plumber's license and established Malone’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. In 1974, he obtained a contract with the Model Cities Program. From 1974 – 1975 Art was the plumbing consultant for Grunau Company projects with Miller Brewery at their New York and Texas plants and continued to work on large projects that shaped the community. Art hunted small game as a child with his father, a sport he handed down to his sons. However, he most enjoyed fishing and boating. Art will be missed by the community. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to family, friends and business owners who have supported us throughout the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Sojourner Truth House are appreciated. Memorial services will be held Sunday April 23, at 3:00 p.m. at Schaff Funeral Home 5920 W. Lincoln, West Allis, WI 53219. Visitation will be Sunday at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Partnership provides job training and employment for youth in juvenile justice system Social Development Commission, MacPyles Corp., and HeartLove Place aim to deter recidivism Youth that have started down the wrong path in life often find themselves in front of a judge in Milwaukee County Children’s Court. Most youth involved with the juvenile justice system deserve a second chance. That is why the Social Development Commission (SDC), the MacPyles Corporation (an operator of local McDonald’s restaurants), and HeartLove Place have collaborated on the Milwaukee County Youth Employment Program. Together, partners will provide troubled teens the opportunity to gain both skills and jobs instead of jail time. A $50,000 youth employment grant from Milwaukee County targets juveniles already in contact with Milwaukee County Children’s Court and offers the opportunity to turn their lives around. Children’s court refers participants youth 15-17 years of age to the program. Youth do not receive a stipend during the six-week training phase, but are paid if hired by MacPyles upon successful completion of the program. Youth will receive the following:

• HeartLove Place provides ServSafe training from a state ServSafe instructor. Youth will learn basic food safety practices, personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation standards used in the culinary industry. • MacPyles Corporation will provide hands-on training in their locally owned and

operated McDonald’s restaurants. • The Social Development Commission will conduct a financial literacy program to teach participants how to manage and save money. SDC instructors will also teach job-related skills including resume writing and acceptable workplace behavior. "This program is near and dear to my heart. Through it we get to work one on one with, and groom, the next generation of McDonald's leaders and operators,” said Robert Pyles, owner of MacPyles Corporation. He went on to say, “The students have an eye opening experience as well. Through this program, they get to see firsthand the endless possibilities behind the Golden Arches - which remains an American phenomenon.” Youth earning jobs with the MacPyles Corporation will be placed in one of their McDonald’s restaurants. An SDC case manager and job developer will maintain direct contact and provide follow-up for up to six months. The grant from Milwaukee County will allow 15-60 youth to participant in the program. The first session begins Thursday, April 27 and continues through Friday, June 9.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

April showers and summer flowers It is April and spring is in full effect. Many people are getting their lawns prepared for the upcoming summer months. Other people are trying to figure out which flowers to plant in their garden or flowerbed. Spring is a time when you can plant seeds that bloom into beautiful things later in the year. This spring, let’s plant some positive seeds inside us that will bloom. The winter has passed so we have to allow the depressions many suffer from during that time to dissipate. It is not unusual for a person to have a darker personality during the winter months. This is especially true if the winter has been

extremely harsh. The winter is over. Let the spring rains cleanse your psyche and begin to think about how you wish to feel and live. Use the same ideology people use when they buy seeds to plant in the garden. If you want to feel happy and content this year, plant the mental seeds to achieve

this. There is no mystery to happiness. The formula is so simple it is complex. Get rid of all things and people that make you unhappy. Can you see how simple this is? If your job is making you unhappy then find something that makes you happy about it. Even if the thought of quitting makes you happy then focus on that. Once you focus on the positive side of anything the task becomes easier. Getting rid of people is even easier. You may not be able financially to walk away from your job at this time. You are able to walk away from anyone at any time. As human beings we tend to stay in relationships or around people that bring us nothing but misery. It is like a sick cycle of perverse misery that

leads us to bond with others in the same rut. If you are married and unhappy the divorce laws make leaving easier today than ever before. If you are in a miserable relationship that isn’t a marriage then blame the person in the mirror. Why are you torturing yourself by staying with someone that you don’t have any legal ties to? Pity? Love? Yeah right. Plant the seeds of freedom and allow them to flourish and go live. In order to feel content one has to be content with his or herself. This is also true with happiness; you have to be happy with yourself first. Content is not settling for the usual misery or pitiful mindset you may be in. Content is knowing that you can change and be different from what used to be. You are content with walking away from the old you and planting seeds for a new you. You are leaving the story of your personality and its baggage in winter while planting new seeds for a new spring/ summer you. Family can keep you from this task. We cannot choose family, but we can move on.

Moving on does not mean bad treatment or disowning your family. What it means is allowing family to work their own problems out. It is a decision to let people find their own way and stop carrying their baggage and yours. Once you decide this you may realize you don’t have as much baggage as you thought. Family is like the ghetto, if you leave you don’t have to worry cause it will be there if you want to go back. But once free would you really want to? Enjoy the spring and upcoming summer. Plant some seeds that will make you life what you want it to be. After all you are the gardener for your life. Climate change: How woke are you? (Part 3) "GOD took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order." - Genesis 2:15, MSG Bible This week, in continuation of our series on climate change, let’s look at global warming and the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are the deep freshwater lakes in east-central North America which consists of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. They are one of the great natural features of the continent and of the Earth. The combined area of the Great Lakes is 94,250 square miles, which represents the largest surface of freshwater in the world, covering an area exceeding that of the United Kingdom. One of the Great Lakes that we are most familiar with as Wisconsinites is Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan lies just south of Lake Superior and is bordered by the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The mean depth of Lake Michigan is 279 feet. The average water level is 577 feet above sea lev-

ing the wildlife and human health by keeping our Great Lakes and waterways clean. To learn more about the projects in progress at the NWF go to: www.nwf.org/ climate-smart. Beloved, safeguarding wildlife in the face of climate change is, per the NWF, its biggest conservation challenge today as climate change is having a profound effect on wildlife and the habitats they call home. el and its waters flow northward into Lake Huron. The Great Lakes receive their water supply from precipitation which increases from west to east and from north to south. The Great Lakes support approximately 6,000 species. They are home to numerous fish, including species undergoing restoration efforts such as the lake trout, lake sturgeon, and species that are popular in commercial or recreational fisheries, including lake whitefish, walleye, muskellunge and several introduced salmon species. The

National Geographic reports that the Great Lakes are important sources of drinking water, economic livelihood and recreation opportunities for millions of Americans and Canadians. The eight Great Lakes states produces more than $35 million in economic activity annually, and fishing, hunting and wildlife watching amount to more than $18 million in annual economic activity in these states. How does global warming affect the Great Lakes? Potential global warming

impacts include reduced water levels (due to decreased winter ice cover allowing more evaporation), increased frequency of intense storm events altering the timing of inflows, and warmer water temperatures. One of the ways the National Wildlife Federation (“NWF”) is safeguarding the Great Lakes from the effects of climate change is by designing “climate smart” restoration and conservation projects. This includes protecting the Great Lakes from oil pipeline spills and guard-

State honors sixteen MPS schools

Schools are Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Schools of Recognition The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction just announced 16 Milwaukee Public Schools as Title I School of Recognition honorees for the 2016-17 academic year, an honor that recognizes success in educating students from low-income families. Fifteen MPS schools are being recognized by the state for "Beating-theOdds" -- low-income schools that have higher-than-average reading and mathematics scores when compared to similar schools around Wisconsin. In addition, Whittier Elementary School is receiving the prestigious distinction as both a "High-Achieving" and a "High-Progress"

school. The 15 "Beating-theOdds" schools include one school that has earned the honor for 12 straight years, two others that have been recognized for eight consecutive years and another for the seventh year in a row. "These 16 schools should act as inspiring, real-life examples to Wisconsinites that

African Americans have the highest rate of high blood pressure in the United States; in fact, as much as 50 percent higher than whites and Hispanics. That means they are at much greater risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and even death. We know exercise can be a challenge. When faced with additional challenges, such as lack of access to parks and streets people believe are safe; competing demands on time (such as work, child care and commuting time); and for many women, concerns about hair care, many people can become discouraged about exercising.

Even I need to exercise more. Getting out and moving was easier when I was participating in a support group that helped me incorporate more physical activity into my busy lifestyle. When I was a primary care physician, I prescribed a healthy dose of exercise to my patients. Take a brisk walk around the neighborhood (or an indoor shopping mall in bad weather), work out to an exercise DVD or join a funfilled exercise group, such as a Zumba® or Jazzercise® class. I counseled my patients to do what worked best for their lifestyles and budgets. Now I know that if the goal is to help lower blood pressure, exercise that gets the heart rate up is critical, along with cutting unhealthy habits, such as smoking and binge watching TV after a meal.

Strategies for fast seasonal allergy relief • Wear sunglasses when outdoors to reduce the amount of pollen entering your eyes, while enjoying some fun in the sun. • Wash your hair at the end of the day to prevent pollen transfer to your pillowcase and other clothing. • Exercise in the morning or late in the day when pollen counts are typically lower. • Got pets? Just like peo-

ances. For some, man’s best friend may be at fault. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 10 percent of allergy sufferers are allergic to household pets. Cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. About one in seven children between the age of 6 and 19 prove to be allergic to our fluffy friends. Prevention is better than treatment. Taking the following steps can drastically prevent or reduce your reaction: • Wear a protective mask when doing yard work. • Use filters in air conditioners to better trap pollen spores. • Check pollen counts before you travel.

If you’re one of the 36 million Americans suffering from seasonal allergies — the runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion — it’s time to reclaim the outdoors with five fast strategies for instant relief. Know your triggers. Because allergens can vary by region, it’s important to discover your triggers. Experts state that common culprits include weed pollens like ragweed, a stubborn plant that grows easily in fields, along roadsides and in vacant lots. Each plant, having up to a billion lightweight pollen grains, can travel up to 400 miles. Many outside molds, which grow in heavy vegetation (that can increase after rain) have also been found to be common annoy-

Local author, Lovelace Redmond, releases new book “Demons Gone Crazy” When Lovelace Redmond began writing “Demons Gone Crazy” in 2012, he started seeking God through prayer for a platform. Although his gift of writing was yet to be discovered, he shared his works with friends as to what the spirit of God had revealed to him. As the revealed Word of God continued to flow into his spirit, the need for a platform soon became critical. Four years later, in 2016, his manuscript “Demons Gone Crazy” found its way into the hands of Linda Reaves, CEO of Winreaves Press Publishing. As a result, the world would become the audience Lovelace Redmond had prayed for. The discovery of his manuscript was timely and with the world in such turmoil and chaos, Reaves advised Mr. Redmond to publish his work as a trilogy. Throughout the process of editing and revising “Demons
