Being Frank
Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper
By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times
Seeing through blindness People tell us who they are every day. The mistakes we make in relationships or business deals with people can often be avoided if we saw people for who they are. This refusal to see people for who they are is killing the family structure in the USA. This blindness has all but killed America’s educational system. This refusal to see things without rose-colored glasses has stunted the growth of the African American for the last 50 years. If the USA is going to show positive progression in the future, citizens have to open up their eyes and take action. Family life is suffering in the USA. One of the main causes is often the dereliction of duty pertaining to children. Often children are raised without any restrictions upon them. The Internet and the music industry warp young minds and many parents wind up living with the menace that plagues their community. Yet, these parents refuse to see the fact that the problem in their neighborhoods sleeps under their roofs in the form of their offspring. These parents watch their children go out into the world looking and acting the part of a hooligan or harlot, but refuse to do anything about it. This is the blindness that is killing the family and many inner city communities.
The education system may be the blindest of all factions in the USA. The school system requires every child to attend school. It forces children who would probably benefit more by either working or learning a trade instead of learning Shakespeare. What you wind up with in many schools is a major faction of the students just going through the motions. Every child is not academically inclined or has the patience to sit through 12 years of educational programming. There is a vast portion of students who should be purged out of the school system. This is extremely true at the high school level. School boards in the USA know this fact but refuse to be honest and take the needed measures to rectify this situation. These school boards continue to live in this destructive blind world.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” - 1 Peter 1:3
ciples shared their sorrow. As the two disciples and Jesus arrive at the Village of Emmaus, they encouraged Jesus to remain with them. Jesus had warmed their hearts so much by not only His presence but by how Jesus explained the Scriptures to them that the disciples invited Jesus to stay the evening with them. As the group sat down for dinner, Jesus began to break bread, He blessed it and gave it to them. When Jesus broke the bread perhaps their eyes were engrossed on the Savior’s nail pierced hands and they suddenly realized that this was Jesus Christ of Nazareth and that He had risen from the dead! Their Savior was no longer dead but He was with them! Immediately the eyes of the men opened and they recognized they were dining with their Messiah! Jesus then, vanished from their sight. Even though Jesus is not physically on earth today, Jesus’ Spirit is still with us, as
This Week’s Meditation: Our Living Hope Through the Resurrection of Jesus! Luke 24:13-32 On the evening of Jesus’ resurrection, two disciples were walking home on the road to Emmaus from the events of the weekend, (i.e. Passover and Crucifixion). Emmaus is located approximately seven miles from Jerusalem. One of the disciples is named Cleopas. While walking along, the two disciples were discussing what had happened. As they were discussing the events of the weekend, suddenly, the risen Jesus joined them on their journey but they did not recognize who Jesus was. Jesus asked why they were so sad and Jesus listened as the dis-
Christians all over the world are able to fellowship with Him and He with us! After the startling revelation, the disciples began discussing the events that had occurred. Jesus’ method of teaching, “opening the scriptures,” was so powerful that it caused the disciples’ hearts to “burn” within them. Excited about this encounter with Jesus, these men hastily returned to Jerusalem with the Good News and began reporting to the eleven disciples what had happened to them on their way home earlier. The Good News these disciples shared was: “It is true! The Lord has risen!” (Luke 24:34.) Beloved, Christ is the living hope for the world today! Just as these disciples were blessed by Jesus’ presence, we too can find our lives blessed through our relationship with the risen Lord. This Week’s Reflection: As you reflect on this meditation know that Jesus is with you. Even though you cannot see Jesus, doesn’t mean Jesus isn’t
there with you. Thank God for God’s presence as you remember the words of the Hebrew writer who quotes God’s promise to Joshua, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, cf. Joshua 1:5.) Then, pray for those whose eyes have not been opened to see that the Savior has come to offer Himself as a sacrifice for their sin. Allow me to close our meditation journey with B. D. Ackley’s words to the well-known Easter hymn, “He Lives.” The words of this hymn speak poetically of the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection: I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today I know that He is living, whatever men may say. I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, And just the time I need Him, He’s always there. He Lives, He Lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me, and talks with me
Along life’s narrow way. He lives, He lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He Lives within my heart! Correction: Mt. Olive MBC says farewell to Rev. and First Lady Patterson On Sunday, April 14, 2019, the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church family gathered together to say good-bye to their Pastor and First Lady of 22 years, Rev. John K. Patterson (left photo), at Mt. Olive MBC, 5277 N. 36th St. Many church members and members of the community came out to pay their respects to Rev. Patterson, who has spent thirty-four years in ministry proclaiming God's Good Word. The theme for the event was "A Bold and Blessed Future" with a sub-theme of "God Frames Our Lives In Seasons." Congratulations Rev. John K. and First Lady Barbra Patterson on all your accomplishments and God bless you both on your future endeavors. Community Baptist Church of Greater Milwaukee pastor Rev. Demetrius K. Williams (lower photo, right) gave the keynote address at the service.

Correction: In the 4-18-19 issue of the Milwaukee Times in the left photo the woman identified as First Lady Barbara Patterson, is not First Lady Patterson but rather Mrs. Emma Thomas-Brooks. First Lady Patterson was unable to attend the event. We are sincerely sorry for the misidentification and wish both Rev. John K. and First Lady Barbara Patterson the best of luck in the future. - Milwaukee Times Staff.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM partners on project to prevent dementia-related crises
By Laura L. Otto
The early signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often subtle, such as when a grandparent’s family recipes start to taste a bit different. Many families don’t seek medical help for their loved ones until these small changes give way to bigger problems. But paying attention to such changes is important, especially for African American and Latino families, who tend to be hit particularly hard by dementia. Research has indicated that Alzheimer’s disease strikes African Americans twice as often as whites, and the disease occurs 1.5 times more often in Latinos than whites. “In these communities, inhome caregiving of a family member with dementia lasts longer for a variety of reasons, including access to care,” said Melinda Kavanaugh, a UWM associate professor of social welfare. With support from the National Institute on Aging, Kavanaugh and several community partners are launching a two-year project that will help African American and Latino families better avert “crisis points.” These are potentially dangerous incidents involving someone with dementia, such as leaving the stove unattended or getting lost outside the home. Sometimes, even these kinds of incidents pass without registering as something serious. “You can see a family that is in crisis,” Kavanaugh said. “They may not recognize it because, to them, it’s normal.” The project’s aim is to collect representative examples of the early indicators of advancing memory loss. The goal: head off disaster by providing this information to families and health care providers of people who haven’t yet reached a crisis point. This advanced notice gives families of patients more time to plan needed care, Kavanaugh said. The researchers will consult with professional caregivers, social workers and family members – including the youth who often care for affected family members after school while parents are still at work. Their observations have not been integrated in previous work. More than 1.4 million children and teens in the United States provide care to a family member. These youth assist with everything from bathing and feeding to administering medications and monitoring activities to ensure safety. And youth may be more tuned-in to changes in family members because
the period of care between school ending and parents returning from work is often a regular routine. The project came about through longstanding relationships Kavanaugh has with community groups, such as the United Community Center, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Milwaukee County Department on Aging. These organizations, Kavanaugh said, bring a focus on the project’s cultural aspects.

In Memory
of Nathan Conyers We Miss You Dearly! Nov. 15, 1945 to April 27, 2018 It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. A part of us went with you, the day God took you home. If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane, we would walk our way to heaven, and bring you back again. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still, in our hearts you hold a place no one could ever fill. Even after a year, we still miss you Nate, - From Lynda, Morgan & Deloris Conyers An NCON Communications Publication
