John Singleton, 'Boyz n the Hood' director, is dead at 51 John Singleton, a versatile director who made a splash with "Boyz n the Hood" and went on to a variety of projects -- including "2 Fast 2 Furious" -- has died after suffering a stroke. He was 51. The director, who had been in a coma since suffering the stroke on April 17, died Monday, April 29, 2019, his family told CNN in a statement. "John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends," Singleton's family said. "We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John's fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time."

In 1992, at the age of 24, Singleton became the youngest person to ever receive an Oscar nomination for best director for "Boyz n the Hood," a film based on his experiences growing up in South Central Los Angeles. He also was the first African American to be nominated in that category. He wrote the screenplay while attending the cinema school at USC, winning various awards while a student that lead to his signing with Creative Artists Agency, the powerful talent agency. Singleton worked steadily in a variety of genres, directing dramas like "Rosewood" and "Baby Boy," a remake of "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson; and the action vehicle "2 Fast 2 Furious," the first sequel in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, in 2003.

such as "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson," "Billions" and "Empire." Early in his career, Singleton also directed Michael Jackson's music video for the song "Remember the Time," which he called "a phenomenal experience." He also directed a movie starring Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur, "Poetic Justice." In an interview coinciding with the 25th-anniversary re-release of "Boyz n the Hood," Singleton said he was "living this film before I ever thought about making it."

he said, "I could have done more movies," noting that some of his experiences with Hollywood, and its treatment of African American movies and filmmakers, had inspired his move into television. As a producer, Singleton was involved with the movies "Black Snake Moan" and "Hustle & Flow." In 2011, Singleton sued Paramount Pictures for $20 million, claiming the company had violated an agreement with him related to the release of "Hustle & Flow." The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

National “Get Caught Reading” Month (Week 1) “If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson Reading is one of the essential foundations of amassing knowledge. While research has found that there has been an increase in the variety of ways people read books, not only on e-readers but also on smartphones and tablets, there is also reason for concern. A blog by Concordia University-Portland, entitled: “Crisis Point: The State of Literacy in America” (March 2018) indicates that more than 30 million adults in the U.S. cannot read, write or do basic math above a third-grade level. (ProLiteracy) And, children whose parents have low literacy rates have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. (National Bureau of Economic Research)

Therefore, for the month of May, this column will be dedicated to reading. May has been celebrated as "National Get Caught Reading Month” which is the nationwide campaign devoted to reading. This campaign promotes the fun of reading books for all ages. Launched in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers, it is now managed by Every Child A Reader. Because of research indicating that every language experience actually stimulates a child’s brain to grow and that reading to children gives them a huge advantage

when they start school, the “Get Caught Reading” campaign and this series of articles, hope to encourage people of all ages to enjoy books and magazines and to share that passion with the young children in their lives. Let’s begin by offering these tips to celebrate and challenge you to “Get Caught Reading” provided by the National Day Calendar:  Anytime you have some free time you will have something to read.  Place books for all ages

in the car. Everyone will have something to read. Older children can read to those who haven’t mastered the skill.  Unplug for the month. Then stop by the library and pick out the latest bestseller or classic on your reading list.  Charge up the digital reader’s battery and load it up. Many classics have been made available for a small fee or no cost.  Get caught reading to children. Find a snug spot and create a routine that carries on throughout the year.  Include a book in every room in the house.  Encourage reading during stressful times as a way to distract the mind away from worries and to refocus.  Read outdoors in a park after a walk.

Join me this month in encouraging a culture of literacy and learning by allowing yourself, your children and grandchildren to “Get Caught Reading.” Next Week: Continuation General Disclaimer: The writer has used her best efforts in preparation of this information. The five best types of exercise for asthma sufferers Love a good sweat? If you’re one of about 20 million Americans with asthma, this may not be a problem. But for some, vigorous activity like running or playing team sports such as basketball, can cause the airways to become inflamed, narrow and swell, and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe. Fortunately for sufferers, having asthma, even exercise-induced asthma, doesn’t have to keep you from training dirty. According to research, the trick is to control symptoms with meds (prescribed, of course) in addition to selecting activity that focuses on a leisurely pace as well as simple breathing techniques. While treatments have varied over the years, everything from herbal remedies to relocation to dryer climates, here’s the latest in what’s good in exercise for asthma sufferers.

pace. Your heart will also get a great workout. That’s because it’s gentle on your joints and muscles. Experts advise doing two-and-a-half hours of swimming a week to meet cardio requirements.

Biking We’re not talking mountain biking. Rapid in-and-out breathing linked to cycling up steep hills or around bends can dry out airways, potentially exacerbating your asthma. However, one study found that even though cyclists and mountain bikers were more likely to have asthma than other Summer Olympians, they were still able to compete – when maintaining a leisurely pace.

Pay close attention to the weather, as extreme temperatures as well as pollen levels can prove dangerous for sufferers. The good news? Most gyms are equipped with stationary bikes; or even offer cycling clinics, also decent options to work in a good sweat. At least 50 percent of people with hepatitis C don’t know they’re infected Did you know that hepatitis C virus infection and liver cancer are serious health problems that disproportionately affect African Americans? They are. But today, though there is no vac-

cine, we have prevention and treatment tools to fight this disease. What is hepatitis C? Let me explain first what hepatitis C is. It is a serious liver disease that results from

infection with the hepatitis C virus. The virus is usually spread when blood from a person infected with hepatitis C enters the body of someone who is not infected. Persons infected with this

virus often have no symptoms while the virus silently attacks the liver causing inflammation and scarring. The liver injury worsens over time causing serious health problems, including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Approximately 50 percent of liver cancer cases are related to hepatitis C. Hepatitis C and the African American community According to the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975 – 2012, during 2008 through 2012, non-Hispanic blacks ages 50 to 64 years (born 1955 – 1965) had higher rates of liver cancer than other ethnic groups. And, more non-Hispanic black men die from liver cancer at an earlier age (60 to 61 years) compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Overall, data continue to show higher rates of hepatitis C and increased liver cancer rates among individuals born from 1945–1965. People born during these years are six times more likely to have hepatitis C than other adults. Current trends An estimated 3.5 million Americans are living with hepatitis C, and at least 50

percent do not know they are infected. Approximately 75 to 85 percent of people who become infected with hepatitis C develop a life-long, chronic infection. What can we do? Because of the silent nature of the disease, a blood test is needed to identify persons infected with hepatitis C virus. To help find some of these unknown infections, CDC and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a one-time hepatitis C test for all persons born from 1945– 1965 regardless of race or ethnicity. Early detection, care, and treatment can save lives. Testing is the only way to know if someone has hepatitis C. If detected early, new treatments are available that can cure 90 percent of hepatitis C infected persons who complete therapy. Fortunately, these new treatments are safe and have few side-effects. Once diagnosed, most persons with hepatitis C can be cured in just 8 to 12 weeks, reducing liver cancer risk by 75 percent. May is Hepatitis Awareness Month and May 19 is National Hepatitis Testing Day. I encourage you to share information about hepatitis C, get tested and encourage testing, and learn more about treatment. Together we can help stop the hepatitis C virus and save lives.

Pitchers, in general, don’t want to serve anything up when they’re on the mound, but one Milwaukee Brewers hurler will soon serve up something he hopes you’ll find delicious. Jeremy Jeffress’ bread and butter usually arrives late in games, when the Brewers are hungry for a win. “Brand new truck just arrived. The guy right there, brought to you by Jeremy Jeffress,” said Alfred Ford, chef. Jeffress will deliver something to satisfy the hunger of Milwaukee Brewers fans. “Jeremy is a fish and shrimp guy, with the fries and coleslaw every time. That’s his order,” said Ford. Fresh from the Bread & Butter food truck, Ford, a chef and friend of Jeffress, will serve up all of the reliever’s favorites. “These are our babies, bread and butter. We are going to do our fish, shrimp, scallops right here. You see it. I want you all to look at it. Hopefully you will love it,” said Ford. Ford’s love of everything on the menu started at a restaurant in Virginia — a childhood favorite of Jeffress — owned by Ford’s dad. “Jeremy used to come in and he’d bring his little dates. They’d come and he knew

he could impress them with a nice piece of shrimp,” said Ford. Now, Jeffress hopes to impress a different audience — putting something special on the menu. “Bossman says he wants tacos, because he’s promised the guys on the team, especially, tacos,” said Ford. Like the menu, the catchy name took a little brainstorming. “I was like, ‘With this baseball, man, you are good, but I got to do something. We have to figure out what to do so when you finish baseball, you’ll have something to fall back on — your bread and butter.’ And he was like, ‘What?’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘I like what you just said — Bread & Butter.’ I was like, ‘Bread & Butter? JJ’s Bread & Butter. OK let’s do it',” said Ford. The true secret to Jeffress’ success will add to the flavor of the experience of watching the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. “Like I said, it’s the American dream, Jeremy use to eat this food when he was a kid. He grew up on it. Made sure — that’s what gave him that 100 mile an hour fast ball,” said Ford. JJ’s Bread and Butter will

Tips and tricks for successful senior independent living Today, successful senior independent living is a more viable option than ever. Contrasting with the antiquated periods in recent history where residents in a retirement community or senior housing community were all treated the same, seniors today have an abundance of choices to pick and choose from as they map their personal blueprint detailing their emotional and physical health needs, in addition to considerations such as activities of daily living and any corresponding assistive care they may require. Whether via independent living communities, a care retirement community, or senior apartments, health care assistance is available in an incredibly diverse assortment of services that are geared towards enabling seniors to live self-reliant and independent lives while receiving a customized level of care that can range from occasional visits to daily care services administered an hour or two each visit. Seniors can pick in-home health care and long-term care services that best suit their individual needs and desires and sub-

sequently design a lifestyle where they are in complete control of the level of care they receive and require. Assisting greatly with the senior experience are innumerable senior-friendly tech devices that can be used to not only provide entertainment opportunities but, more importantly, serve as essential components of the senior care health blueprint by offering further safety measures that can prove lifesaving in the event of an emergency. With the profusion of choices available to elderly citizens today, living a successful senior independent life can easily become a rela-

tively stress-free and painless endeavor. Choices exercised in the quality, degree, and frequency of in-home health care services serve as a cornerstone of the successful senior lifestyle while opting for the myriad senior-specific tech devices available on today’s market can strengthen the aspects of security and safety and much more. Subsequent to addressing home health care and technology decisions and implementing their corresponding action, ensuring a happy, healthy, and secure life for those in their golden years becomes merely a matter of cursory education, the implementation of a few sim-

ple steps, and just a bit more decision-making in terms of ensuring safety and sustainability. Successful senior independent living: our best tips and tricks Identify your needs Identify the level of assisted care you will require. Wheelchair-bound seniors will require in-home care services that are vastly different in scope than the services provided for a senior experiencing mild to moderate dementia symptoms. To properly identify the level of care you will need, take a pen and paper and write down any illnesses and conditions you have, in addition note the specific items and tasks you think you will need assistance with. Common in-home health care assistance can include: • Administering medication at specific times throughout the day • Managing and organizing medical appointments • Meal preparation and food shopping • Cleaning, laundry, gardening, trash removal • Companionship • Errand-running • Paying bills and finance management • Transportation • Grooming • Bathing Choose the type of inhome care you will need, as well as the frequency Choose the type of inhome assistive care you will require after you have identified your needs by examining your individual health conditions and the various tasks

and aspects of life you need help with. The following is a list of the most common types of in-home care assistance providers utilized by seniors. Choose the type of care that is most appropriate for your needs; a visiting doctor is not budget-appropriate or pragmatic for a senior suffering from osteoporosis. Rather, for this type of situation a personal care attendant, home health aide, or even a homemaker would be an ideal choice to provide assistance with various chores, tasks, and more, while remaining a budget-conscious choice. Conversely, a senior who has recently undergone surgery might best benefit from the services of a physical therapist who can facilitate post-surgical recovery and also perhaps a home health aide who can attend to various domestic tasks and chores while on your recovery journey. Concerning your budget, identify how often you will need your home care professional to assist you and plan accordingly. Types of home care professionals $ – Least Costly $$ – More Costly $$$ – Most Costly Home-health nurses $$ Nurse practitioners $$ Physician assistants $$ Physical therapists $$ Physicians $$$ Occupational therapists $$ Home-health aides $ Personal companions and homemakers $ Personal care attendants $

The MSO will be joined by guest artists Denzal Sinclaire and Dee Daniels for this tribute to Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole. The performance will include “Mona Lisa,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “The Very Thought of You,” “Nature Boy,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” “Almost Like Being in Love,” and many more. Her vocal style was born in her stepfather’s church choir in Oakland, California, refined through the R&B era, polished during a five-year stay in the Netherlands and Belgium from 1982 to 1987, and brought to full fruition upon her return to North America. recipient of Jazz Report Magazine Award for Male Jazz Vocalist, and 2007 Choc Jazzman Award (France). His admirers include Grammy Award-winning artists Diana Krall (“Denzal Sinclaire embodies the tradition of the great singers I love like Nat Cole, yet definitely has his own voice. He is one of my favorite singers...”), Wynton Marsalis and the JALC Orchestra, Dianne Reeves, Michael Feinstein, and Michael Bublé, as well as growing legions of jazz fans in his native Canada and abroad. From his early days as a canny interpreter of Nat ‘King’ Cole’s mentholated crooning, he’s grown into one of the most distinctive and individualistic singers anywhere.

Now in its 46th season, the orchestra’s nationally syndicated radio broadcast series, the longest consecutive-running series of any U.S. orchestra, is heard annually by more than two million listeners.
