The British Royal Family welcomes new baby Archie

On Monday, May 6, 2019, England's Royal Family welcomed their newest addition to the world, baby Archie. The newborn’s birth has captivated England, not so much for his position, seventh in line to the British throne; but more of because he represents change for the oldest of royal houses. He is half American, descended on his mother’s side from a bellhop in a Cleveland hotel, a laun-

dry worker in Chattanooga, and a bartender in an Atlanta saloon. And he is the first multiracial baby in the British monarchy’s recent history, an instant star in a country where multiracial children make up the fastest-growing ethnic category. Buckingham Palace said that Duchess Meghan gave birth at 5:26 a.m. and that her mother, Doria Ragland, was Prince Harry and Duchess with the new parents at their Meghan with Baby Archie.

home, Frogmore Cottage. The newborn boy weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces; the royal couple wrote later appeared together and officaly introduced baby Archie. The entry of Meghan Markle, the descendant of plantation slaves, into the royal family resonated deeply with many people of African descent, who almost immediately began to anticipate the birth of the couple’s first

child. “We have been waiting for him,” said Carol Lengolo, 38, who moved to Britain from South Africa and is raising a son and a daughter in southeast London. She said that she had set up multiple notifications so the family would know the moment the child was born and that when word came through, at 2:39 p.m., they began screaming and ran to the television.

Mr. Perkins Family Restaurant celebrates golden anniversary The year was 1969 and Hilda and Willie Perkins, Sr.'s dream to open a restaurant came true. The north side establishment at 1943 W. Atkinson Avenue, their first location, very quickly became too small, to accommodate the already loyal customer base. So, they moved a short distance away to the current location at 2001 W. Atkinson Avenue. A milestone of this magnitude certainly is worthy of a celebration and the founders, now retired, agree. "It doesn't feel like fifty years but this certainly is worthy of a celebration," Hilda Perkins said. "It was his idea; he always wanted to own a restaurant, and I loved to cook, so I said, 'Let's move on it'." Willie Perkins, Sr., said, "I am just so happy that we enjoyed many, many years of happiness and success at the restaurant and made so many fiends; we owe Milwaukee a great deal of gratitude." Cherry Perkins, the current owner and widow of son and previous owner, the late Willie C. Perkins, Jr., echoes

CHILD WATCH

Perspectives

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

By: Marian Wright Edelman Founder and President Emerita of the Children's Defense Fund

You can’t win like that “I can’t do a lot of the extra stuff that I would like to do for my kids or with my kids because I just can’t afford to. No vacations. There’s not too much going to the movies or little outings. Even getting school uniforms together is expensive. Sometimes they have to wear stuff from last year. I have a lot of guilt because I can’t provide for them the way that I want to.” The Children’s Defense Fund recently released our latest report on Ending Child Poverty Now once again showing just how much poverty is hurting our children and nation and sullying our pretensions to be an equal opportunity society. As part of their coverage of this new report The Guardian spoke with several parents struggling to raise children in poverty today including New Orleans mother Sarah Davis. As their story explains, Davis lost her home in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck. After attempts to make fresh starts with her three children in Texas, Indiana, the west coast, and Kentucky, she returned home to New Orleans three years ago, but even with a job as a phone operator she wasn’t able to escape poverty. Her family lived in a homeless shelter until a nonprofit agency helped pay the

first few months’ rent on a home. Now half of her salary of less than $1,700 a month goes towards housing. The rest isn’t enough to cover everything else: “A lot of times I have to buy foods that are less expensive to buy but I know are totally disgustingly bad for you. There are a lot of ramen noodles . . . Sometimes I pay just enough on my water or electricity bill to keep it from getting cut off. I always owe no matter what, because I have to have money for other things.” Davis’s youngest daughter has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and needs extra attention, so Davis knows that even if she could work 80 hours a week, that wouldn’t be a good solution either. “If I worked two full-time jobs, then I’m not at home and that falls apart. If I work one full-time job, there’s more structure at home but then I make less money. It’s like, you can’t win like that.” You can’t win like that and we all lose in a nation that allows millions of children to face the minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day harms of poverty. In 2017 more than 12.8 million of our

children lived below the official poverty line—$25,094 for a family of four—based only on cash income. Nearly half lived in extreme poverty below half the poverty line. Like Davis’s children, more than two-thirds of poor children in related families live with an adult who works and more than a third live with an adult who works full-time year round. Poverty stacks the odds against children and stalks them down every avenue of their lives. As our latest national plea to end child poverty now carefully documents, poverty places children at risk of hunger, homelessness, sickness, violence, educational failure and family stress and too often deprives them of positive early childhood experiences and opportunities that prepare more affluent children for school, college and work. Poverty wears down children’s emotional reserves, saps their spirits and confidence and threatens their potential and aspirations. From infancy through adulthood poverty gnaws away at child resiliency and hope and harms them for life.

lost productivity and extra health and crime costs stemming from child poverty add up to about $700 billion a year, or 3.5 percent of GDP. Another study found eliminating child poverty between the prenatal and age 5 years would increase lifetime earnings between $53,000 and $100,000 a child—a total lifetime benefit of $20 to $36 billion for all babies born in a given year. And we cannot measure the countless innovations and discoveries that never occur because so much child potential is lost.

Child poverty also fuels a destructive intergenerational cycle of poverty with compounding effects that can have lasting consequences into adulthood. Children who grow up poor have a harder time escaping poverty as adults. Research shows people who experienced poverty at any point during childhood are more than three times as likely to be poor at age 30 as those who were never poor as children. The longer a child is poor, the greater her risk of becoming a poor adult. A 2017 Urban Institute report found only Beyond its individual hu- 20 percent of children who man costs, child poverty has spent half their childhoods huge economic costs for all in poverty were consistently of us. One study shows the working or in school during

Being Frank I was at a meeting and saw an African American woman wearing a shirt that said 'equality' across the front. At first I didn’t pay the shirt any mind. As the meeting went on the shirt drew my attention. The woman was presenting, and the word was emblazoned on the front of the shirt. I deduced the shirt was a statement designed to get equality for some faction of the US population. The more I looked at the shirt I began to wonder, “Is equality good for everyone?” There is a fine line between equality and sameness. I pondered if the lines had been blurred between these two points in people’s minds in the USA. What is equality in this country? Is it treating everyone the same? Is it making everyone the same? As I sat and looked around the crowd I thought, “Do I want to be equal to these people?” The woman wearing the shirt was African American. I began to wonder if the purpose of the shirt was the time worn equality statewww.milwaukeetimesnews.com

No families should have to fight so desperately to beat the odds in this battle that is so hard to win in a nation with the largest economy in the world. We must act now to save our children’s lives and our nation’s soul. Inaction is not an option; poverty is far too costly for our children and nation to continue. Ending Child Poverty Now shows we already have the solutions and that by investing just a small percentage of our federal budget into existing programs and policies, we can make significant progress and rescue many child lives from stunted futures. We just need the moral decency, political will and economic common sense to do it. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Is equality good for everyone?

ment African Americans had wanted for centuries in the USA. The question in my mind was, “Is being equal to whites and other races beneficial to black people? “ African American scholars across the country will rant about how blacks created the majority of inventions, sciences and math. The history of the world is dominated by black genius even through the dark times of the last 2000 years. With this in mind, why would blacks want to be equal to the people they trained that later returned the favor by enslaving them? This is where the equality statement fails true

their twenties.

black potential. Equal to whom? Equal to a race of people who have overstated their input on history? Equal to the race of people who were the first slave catchers before the European came on the scene? Who are African Americans striving to be equal to? I would like to believe that African Americans have sense to know that whites will never view them as equal in any country on the planet. It is time for African Americans to ask, “What measuring stick is being used for equality? Is it designed to help the black race reach its full potential?” These are the questions that

scare people of all races. Black people have been beaten down to the point where all they want is to be looked at as equal to their oppressors. By force, religion and mental manipulation black people have been broken down on all levels. This is why they crave to be treated equal to the people who did the damage. The loss of self worth has given the black people on the planet a twisted sense of Stockholm Syndrome, where the goal is to be equal to people who are not on their level. If I want to control a people for generations I have make sure they do not reach their potential. In order to do this I have to get them to measure their potential by my standards and pursue equality on my scale. This is why equality to other races has not worked for black people on the planet. Being equal to other races does not ensure black people will reach their full potential. African Americans love to talk about how they domi-

nate pro sports. What if Michael Jordan had strived to be equal to his peers in basketball? What if Randy Moss or Ray Lewis only strived to only be equal to their peers in football? If African Americans want to be better in sports than other races then why not be better in everyday living? Why not eliminate the quest for equality in all aspects of life and seek to dominate, maybe conquer? This is not a put-down of other races but an eye opener to African Americans. African American people, are you willing to settle for equality or will you seek your true potential and be great? National “Get Caught Reading” Month (Week 3) “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

but reach out to young people in your community.

In a few weeks, most students will take a summer break from school. If you are thinking about how to keep your children and youth groups reading over the summer months, consider starting a Summer Reading Book Club for young people. Book Clubs are popular especially with women groups. Book Club members meet monthly or quarterly and books are chosen from suggestions by its members. If you are looking for ways to encourage your youth group to read over the summer, a Summer Reading Book Club for children and youth is a great idea! This week, I will offer 10 tips for starting a Summer Reading Book Club for your children and youth groups:

Tip #4: Encourage sign up! Invite interested parents to sign up their children and youth. Personally, encourage your youth group to attend. Even if youth say books aren’t their thing, when young people get together for fellowship, discussion and socialization, you will find young people will join in picking up a good book to read. Tip #1: Select a team of organizers. This Team will plan the Summer Reading Book Club and also select books for summer reading for each age group targeted. Selecting books in advance will keep your Summer Book Club running smoothly. Be sure all books selected are age appropriate and are perfect for group discussion. Also, be sure the books are not too long and can be obtained from the library.

Tip #2: The team should also select the best time/ location for the Summer Reading Book Club to meet. Think about using a public location such as a library, community center, school or even your church. Tip #3: Promote! Place an ad in the church bulletin that your children and youth group are starting a Summer Reading Book Club. Invite not only church members

Bulletin Board MPS seniors learn financial planning

About 25 MPS seniors took part in a new Financial Freedom Summit hosted by the MPS Department of Black and Latino Male Achievement (BLMA) on May 10, 2019. Students toured residential and commercial projects and heard from local business leaders. Young men from Bradley Technical and Trade School, Riverside University High School, South Division High School, and Washington High School were invited to the event after taking part in BLMA programs throughout the school year. The event was organized to give students insight into the hidden side of finance. Guest speakers talked about investing, real estate, and banking, and touched upon areas that ranged from personal finances to corporate and commercial careers. Students explored the city by riding the new transportation venture The Hop, toured city hall, and visited an apartment and a multi-use building under construction to hear about the process of real estate investing and development. Guests Kevin Newell and Kalan Haywood served as tour guides and local experts at several sites.

nurses benefit schools in several ways. • Nurses improve attendance by promoting wellness and good hygiene. • Nurses enable better academic performance by addressing individual health needs. • Nurses address student health concerns, freeing up administrators and staff. • Nurses improve the general health and wellbeing of staff. • Nurses help school accountability by promoting compliance with federal and state laws.

National School Nurses Day is May 8, 2019. This day was established in 1972 to recognize the value and accomplishments of school nurses. School nurses identify and support students with chronic

One day each year does not seem like enough time to celebrate school nurses, so don’t miss this chance – thank a school nurse today! School nurses support education by looking after individual student health needs, supporting families, and offering school-wide programs. A school nurse’s primary purpose is to help students stay healthy and safe so they are ready to learn. School nurses make sure students know how to manage health conditions by taking medication or other treatments. Nurses also work hard with families struggling with poverty or serious health

Five key ways to spring into a healthy lifestyle By: Priscilla Q. Williams, RN Spring is my favorite season of the year! It’s a time when the flowers bloom, the weather is warmer, and the grass is green and beautiful. Spring is also a time to focus on our health and wellness. This spring I want to share with you five keys ways to spring into a healthy lifestyle. These tips can be used all year long, but the bloom season is the perfect time to start. Detox Detoxing is a good way to help get your body clean along with the house spring cleaning. If you want to get rid of all the toxins and waste in your body, start with a simple detox drink. Drinking a cup in the morning will allow you to absorb nutrients quickly, get your digestive system moving, and improve your quality of life! 1 cup water. 2 tablespoons apple cider

vinegar. 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice. 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger, or ground ginger. ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1 dash cayenne pepper. 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional) Eat clean Clean eating is all about being mindful of the origin of your food and ensuring that it is as close to its nat-

ural state as possible. It is about consuming tons of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, fish, seafood and clean meats. When we fuel our body with whole, unprocessed foods we provide it with the nutrients it needs to function at its best. In turn, we look and feel better. We sleep better, our skin is better, and we have more energy. Start your clean eating with the foods you like and then introduce

new food as you go. Spend more time outdoors As the days get longer and the weather is warmer, spend more time outdoors. Enjoy time in the sun, walking, running, riding your bike or just sitting on the stoop reading a book. Studies show that spending time in green spaces—such as a garden or a city park—has been linked to improvements in heart health, lower stress levels, and even a longer life span. It is also proven that sun can release hormones that make you feel good. Take a class Spring is the perfect time to take a dance class, yoga class or even a meditation class. This will help decrease stress, but it will also help you with building new relationships. It’s important to try new things you haven’t tried before.

much fun. It was also a great way to meet new people. Another great thing to do is take a creative class. Like painting, singing, sewing or photography. This is another way to relieve stress and meet new and exciting people.

Travel Travel is a great way to spring into a healthy lifestyle. When you travel you not only experience new places but you meet new people. Recently I went to the Caribbean and I had such a great time. I was able to eat healthily, stay active, snorkel, meet new people and burn a lot of calories. Travel will also keep you moving and seeking new and exciting adventures. Spring is truly that time of year to re-commit to your health. It’s a great time to make a start now and then by the time the winter comes it will be routine. Spring into I recently took a water better health and you fulfill a aerobics class and it was so better quality life.

Cholesterol busters: Natural treatments for high cholesterol

M&S CLINICAL SERVICES, INC Northside Access Point 2821 N 4th Street, Suite 210 Milwaukee, WI 53212 414-263-6000 fax 414-263-2270 www.msclinicalservices.com

If you have been to the doctor lately and found out that your cholesterol is not so good, then you definitely need to take action. If the level is not too elevated or you do not have a genetic component, you can try lifestyle modifications before starting medicine. High cholesterol is important because it increases the risk of heart disease. The bad cholesterol, LDL carries cholesterol throughout the body and LDL cholesterol builds up in your arteries. The good cholesterol, HDL picks up excess cholesterol from the arterial wall and takes it to the liver. So what do you do? Before going directly to medical treatment, lifestyle changes are essential to improve your cholesterol level. The old adage diet and exercise cures all is true. Here are some suggestions: 1. Eat more high-fiber foods- Foods high in dietary fiber reduce cholesterol absorption. High fiber foods include oat/bran, bananas, apples, pears, beans, and Brussel sprouts. Try oatmeal with bananas for breakfast.

2. Add good fats/ decrease bad fat- Try to decrease high saturated fat and omit trans fat from your diet. These types of fats will definitely raise your total cholesterol level. High saturated fat foods include red meat, processed meats and some dairy products(butter and cheese). Trans fats are listed usually as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Stay away from this fat. Good fats are monosaturated fats found in olive oil, avocados, almonds and walnuts. 3. Stop smoking- In addition to the increased risk of several types of cancer, cigarette smoking damages the walls of your blood vessels, making them likely to accumulate fatty deposits. 4. Exercise - Exercise has many benefits. But related to cardiovascular disease, exercise increases the good cholesterol, HDL and decreases LDL, the bad cholesterol. Exercise alone won’t guarantee a low cholesterol level. Genetics, weight, age and other medical conditions also play a part.
