Billionaire pays off all 2019 student loan debt at Morehouse College Billionaire investor Robert F. Smith was booked to do the commencement address at Morehouse College on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Commencement addresses by business people usually have some sort of inspiration in the message mixed in with how they were able to accomplish so much through their education. But during his remarks in front of the nearly 400 graduating seniors, the technology investor and philanthropist surprised nearly everyone by announcing that his family was providing a grant to eliminate the student debt of the entire Class of 2019. Graduates reacted with a bunch of cheers chanting “MVP! MVP!” after hearing the news. “This is my class,” he said, “and I know my class will pay this forward.” The announcement came as a surprise to Smith’s staff and to the staff at Morehouse, and received the biggest cheers of the morning Smith, who was awarded an honorary doctorate at Morehouse College’s 2019 graduation exercises, had al-

Robert F. Smith ready announced a $1.5 million gift to the school. The billionaire’s commitment to pay off the student loan debt for graduates of the historically Black Morehouse College covers roughly $40 million dollars, the school said. “When you have to service debt, the choices about what you can go do in the world are constrained,” Morehouse President David A. Thomas said. “(Smith’s gift) gives

them the liberty to follow their dreams, their passions.” Thomas told CNN on Monday that the exact amount of student loan debt to be covered was still being calculated. Smith’s gesture, which Thomas called “a liberation gift,” will enable graduates to have more capital to do things like start businesses and support their families. According to recent Federal Reserve data, Americans

owe $1.5 trillion in student loans. Outstanding student loan debt exceeds auto loan debt ($1.1 trillion) and credit card debt ($977 billion). The issue of a free college education has emerged as a key topic on the 2020 campaign trail. Several candidates have expressed support for making sure students can graduate without debt. Also receiving an honorary degree Sunday was Oscar-nominated actress and activist Angela Bassett, who referenced Morehouse graduate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and suggested that the Class of 2019 might emulate him, but take their own path.“I want you to proudly walk in your own shoes,” she said, “and you know what it’s like when you get a new pair of shoes? I want you to be uncomfortable, I want you to be mindful, I want you to be wary.” This gesture is huge because debt is becoming more and more of a hindrance in the Black community. American household debt hit a record $13.21 trillion in 2018. If you had to write that check it would read

$13,210,000,000.00. Student loan debt disproportionally affects minorities. About 87 percent of Blacks take out student loans at four-year colleges, while 65 percent of Hispanics take out student loans, according to the National Center for Education Studies. Blacks graduates average $7,400 more in debt than whites when they graduate, and that gap widens over time due to higher default rates. On the flip side, Forbes estimates Smith’s fortune at about $5 billion, built mainly through Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm that focuses on buying and selling software firms. The firm has about $46 billion in assets under management, according to Forbes. It is privately held and does not publicly report its results, but it is believed to be one of the best-performing firms in the country, with annualized returns of more than 20 percent since its founding. Thank you Mr. Smith! Thank you very much!

'Bestowing of the Kente' ceremony honors African American graduates

As part of a tradition that goes back nearly 25 years, Alverno College held its Bestowing of the Kente ceremony on Sunday, May 12, 2019. The Bestowing of the Kente is a rite of passage recognizing African American students who are graduating seniors, earning a master’s degree, or completing a certification program. Each honoree chooses someone to present her with a Kente cloth, a colorful, hand-woven, ceremonial piece. This person is someone whose support was vital to the graduate’s success, and the grad- uate expresses their gratitude in a heartfelt, emotional ex-

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Saturday, May 4, 2019, the Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) hosted its annual Youth Leadership Summit at the Harley Davidson University Building, 3800 W. Juneau Ave., 6th floor. The event brought 50 to 60 youth who have demonstrated leadership ability through work, in school and extracurricular or community activities to participate in leadership orientations and workshops. As part of the program, 30 of the senior students attending received laptop computers. The event was free for attendees, lunch was provided, and the participants were entered into a drawing for an iPad and other prizes. The event was hosted by MUL President and CEO Dr. Eve Hall (center, front row).

MPS celebrates tree donation in honor of Bucks’ success Students and staff at MPS Milwaukee School of Languages (MSL) celebrated a gift of four new trees this month along with Bango and the Milwaukee Bucks. The trees are a donation from American Transmission Company (ATC), which has provided 573 trees this spring in honor of every Bucks three-point shot at Fiserv Forum this season.

This is the third year American Transmission Company has donated trees to schools across the state. ATC became involved in the program to support environmental awareness and beautify schools. The company has now donated a total of 1,271 trees. The four trees planted at MSL were sourced from Johnson’s Nursery in Menomonee Falls.

How allowing our kids to express themselves can improve their mental wellness as adults By: Dr. Nicole Washington, board-certified psychiatrist “Stay out of grown folks’ business” “Speak when spoken to” “You’re too young to have an opinion” I am sure that many of you have either heard these words when you were a kid or have spoken them to your own children. Oftentimes in the Black community we don’t allow our children to have opinions or to engage in any kind of conversation that is seen as adult. While there are certain topics our kids shouldn’t be a part of, there are long term benefits of letting our children in on some of these crucial conversations: Teaching self-advocacy – There is an art and sometimes a fine line between assertiveness and aggressive-

ness. Allowing a child to engage in advocating for themselves at a young age can help them learn how to do so without tipping over into aggression. This is especially helpful when advocating for themselves with someone who is in a position of authority over them. For some, learning this skill can help them get more comfortable speaking up especially if the child is shy. Building confidence – Allowing your child to be involved in discussions will

help them feel more confident in themselves and their ability to add value to relationships and situations. Give them kudos when they make a good suggestion or point out an important point. Of course, depending upon the age and the conversation, your child may make suggestions that aren’t feasible. It is important that in those cases you don’t put them down or use words like “crazy” or “stupid” that would serve to break down their confidence instead of building it up.

Decisiveness – Having your kids help with certain decisions can give them the ability to make firm decisions rooted in good old common sense. By allowing them to be a part of these conversations and see your decision-making process, it teaches them how to make well-informed decisions, taking into consideration the potential positives and negatives that may come as a result. Learning responsibility – When your children make some decisions on their own, with your oversight of course, they will not always make the right decision and that is okay. Nobody makes the right decision all the time. But thriving individuals can take responsibility for those moments and learn from any mistakes along the way. Learn to fail – Since failures are inevitable in life, it makes sense to allow our kids the opportunity to fail with our support so that they will know how to fail when

we aren’t around. When we make every decision possible for our kids and then expect them to magically know how to be an adult at 18, we are doing them, and us, a huge disservice. Teaching them early on the coping skills required to fail successfully can save them a lot of heartache as they age. As an adult psychiatrist, I work with people every day who suffer from depression and anxiety, a lot of which stems from a poor sense of who they are, low self-esteem, poor decision making, and poor coping skills. In working with them, it is evident that they never learned the skills described here and it has affected them well into adulthood. As a parent, we want our children to be successful adults and to have an easier path than we did. Sometimes for that to occur, we have to step outside of what we think we know as fact and explore other techniques.

Can your child develop multiple myeloma from toxins in your home furnishings? Researchers have found, children who live in homes with vinyl flooring and flame-retardant furniture have higher levels of potentially harmful chemicals in

their blood or urine. Children from homes that had vinyl flooring in all areas were found to have concentrations of benzyl butyl phthalate metabolite in their

urine that were 15 times higher than those in children living in homes with no vinyl flooring. Benzyl butyl phthalate (a plasticizer often used for

floor tiles) has been linked to multiple myeloma along with respiratory disorders, skin irritations, and reproductive disorders. The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. It included 203 children from 190 families who were tested for these chemicals, so-called semi-volatile organic compounds (or SVOCs), in their blood or urine. For the study, the researchers analyzed samples of indoor air, indoor dust, and foam collected from furniture in each of the children’s homes, along with a handwipe sample, urine, and blood from each child. “Our primary goal was to investigate links between specific products and children’s exposures, and to determine how the exposure happened, was it through breathing, skin contact or inadvertent dust inhalation,” said study leader Heather Stapleton. She is an environmental chemist at Duke University’s School of the Environment. “SVOCs are widely used in electronics, furniture, and building materials, and can

be detected in nearly all indoor environments,” Stapleton explained in a university news release. “Human exposure to them is widespread, particularly for young children who spend most of their time indoors and have greater exposure to chemicals found in household dust,” she added. Nonetheless, there has been little research on the relative contribution of specific products and materials to children’s overall exposure to SVOCs,” Stapleton said. The investigators found that children living in homes where the sofa in the main living area contained flame-retardant polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in its foam had a six-fold higher concentration of PBDEs in their blood. Exposure to PBDEs has been linked in laboratory tests to neurodevelopmental delays, obesity, endocrine and thyroid disruption, cancer and other diseases, the study authors said. So, in order to take extra precaution, ask about the flooring in your home if you’re renting and stay away from flame-retardant furniture in order to lower your child’s risks. Spotlight on Our Community

Getting to know our the individuals in our community that make a difference

50 year wedding anniversary beats the odds Of all people who tied the knot 50 or more years ago, and who haven’t yet died, only 50 percent have made it this far without divorcing or becoming widowed, according to the American Community Survey (February 13, 2016). Ron and Lillian Lawrence, of Mequon Wisconsin, have beaten the odds. June 2, 2019, they will celebrate a Golden Wedding Anniversary of a life spent together, as well as their accomplishments with love and commitment for the last 50 years. Both Ron and Lillian were born in Milwaukee and attended Milwaukee Public Schools. Ron enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after high school graduation and Lillian became a freshman at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Ron Lawrence, a Vietnam War veteran and Lillian Williams, a graduate of UW-Platteville were married in June of 1969.

rants. Numerous other projects, schools, businesses and churches were built and/or remodeled by Ebony Builders throughout the city of Milwaukee. In January, 2019, Ron Lawrence retired after 45 years in the real estate, construction and remodeling industry. Lillian Lawrence served as a Police and Fire Commissioner in the city of Mequon for eight years. She was a classroom teacher and a program implementer for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) for 32 years. Before retirement, she coauthored Assessment Portfolios for Elementary Students in collaboration with MPS. This curriculum was used by more than 12,000 students each year at the time of her retirement. After retiring from MPS, she worked with Milwaukee Teacher Education Center (MTEC) for fifteen years. She worked with MTEC as an assessor and
