Alverno Bestowing of the Kente Graduation Ceremony Eleven African American women participated in the 42nd Bestowing of the Kente Award at Alverno College on May 13, 2018. The Bestowing of the Kente and Latinas con Fuerza ceremonies are culturally grounded Rites of Passage in which Alverno honors its African and Latina graduates’ heritage. Kente is a Fante-West African word meaning basket. The ceremonies also provide an opportunity for graduates to recognize and express deep gratitude to their heritage, family, friends and loved ones who supported the graduate on their collegiate journey. Graduates who participate in the African American ceremony have a Kente, which is a hand-woven, ceremonial cloth that is regarded as a symbol of prestige and reserved for special occasions. Alverno is one of only a handful of colleges in the U.S. which conduct Kente Ceremonies. Pictured are (back row, from Staff Photo left) Alexis Walker, Diamond Thompson, Emerald Summers, Julissa Moore, Clarissa Lawrence, and Gabrielle Johnson; (front row, from left) Rena Ganier, Amber Floyd (who also honored Hispanic heritage by participating in the Latinas Con Fuerza ceremony), Danielle Bennett, Colette Allen, and Kalimah Al-Mujaahid.

Carter, Jr., R.Ph., on May 18, 2018. Dr. Carter has operated a store at the same location for more than 50 years. “Dr. Carter is a trailblazing Black business owner who has dedicated his life in service to others, while improving the health of the community,” said 7th District Alderman Khalif Rainey. “This honorary street sign naming gives us an opportunity to pay homage to a man that has had such a positive impact on our community.” Pictured are (from left) Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Dr. Carter and Alderman Rainey. Mothers – A special gift from God (Conclusion) In 1 Thessalonians 2:7, Paul used mothers to describe God’s love for Israel. “But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother, as one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” Paul was describing the gentle, comforting nature of mothers. Paul made this reference to mothers because the believers in Thessalonica had accused Paul of ministering essentially because of self-interest. Paul refuted their statement and said, they should remember the gentle, caring, comforting nature of his ministry which resembled that of a tender-hearted, caring mother and the love she has for her children. Then when God talked about His Israel, He too used
a motherhood metaphor in Isaiah 66:13. He told Israel that He would comfort them like a mother comforts her children. What God is saying is that no one can comfort like a mother and that same comfort is what one can expect from God for His people. Beloved, women play such an important role in God’s creation. So important that Proverbs 31, the magnificent chapter on the virtuous woman, does not end with instructions on how to live a good, saintly lifestyle, neither does it close with praising manhood, but it closes with a testimony and tribute to women. It extends praise and exalts womanhood. Let us listen to those words again:
Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord should be praised. I would like to close this month’s series of articles celebrating motherhood with a poem written by Helen Steiner Rice: “A Mother’s Love” A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain. It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may. For nothing can destroy it or take that love
away… It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking. And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking. It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems. It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation. A many splendored miracle man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand.
CELEBRATE MOTHERHOOD The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in these articles, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. Bulletin Board First day for new MPS interim superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley will officially lead Milwaukee Public Schools, the largest school district in Wisconsin, beginning Monday, May 21, 2018, as interim superintendent. Dr. Posley started his career in MPS in 1990 as a school teacher at Franklin Elementary School. He excelled as a teacher and became an assistant principal, principal and served in various district administrative roles. Dr. Posley most recently was Chief School Administration Officer and was charged with overseeing all 160 MPS schools and their school leaders. The following is a message from the new interim superintendent.
cation and collaboration "I will be visiting schools and soliciting feedback to get your thoughts about district strengths, our potential for growth, and opportunities for improvement. Please go to our website at mpsmke. com/feedback and let us know what you think. "Our children are our future leaders. They deserve every opportunity to be successful. It is our responsibility to make sure every child has the chance to succeed." Sincerely, Keith P. Posley, Ed.D. Interim Superintendent of Schools
New interim MPS superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley with MPS students.
"Dear Members of the MPS Community, "As I begin my role as interim superintendent for Milwaukee Public Schools, I would like to share my hopes and dreams for our students and how we can work together to make them a reality. The past 28 years of my life have been dedicated to working in MPS in various positions - teacher, principal, and various administrative roles. Most recently, I was Chief School Administration Officer and was charged with overseeing all 160 MPS schools and their school leaders. I am honored to have worked with so many of you, interacted with students, and engaged families and the community-at-large. "Public education changed my life. It expanded my world. I want all MPS students to have the same opportunities to grow, learn, and excel. I am dedicating myself to that goal. Working together, we can achieve it. "I am excited to begin my work as interim superintendent. Nothing is more important than the academic success of our young people. I am prepared to do whatever is necessary to make certain all students have access to opportunities that allow them to experience personal and academic success in Milwaukee Public Schools. What’s the hold up? Many with depression often delay and avoid treatment Did you know, according to Mental Health America, African Americans are only 20 percent more likely to report serious psychological distress issues than whites? However, we face the hardest time expressing our emotions with family members and friends. Some African Americans simply don’t believe in depression even though they have to face discrimination, profiling, and negative stereotypes at some point in their lifetime if not all their lives. Furthermore, a recent study finds, only one-third of people newly diagnosed with depression start treatment quickly, and seniors and minorities are the least likely to get help in a timely fashion. For the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 240,000 people in the United States who received a new diagnosis of depression from a primary care provider between 2010 and 2013. Overall, about 36 percent of those patients got antidepressants or counseling within 90 days of their diagnosis. About half of patients with more severe depression started treatment within that time frame. Race and age seemed to play a part in the findings. Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics were at least 30 percent
less likely to begin treatment than whites. And patients aged 60 and older were half as likely to begin treatment as those younger than 44, according to the study. Among patients who began treatment, more than 80 percent received antidepressants rather than counseling. The investigators found that older patients were far less likely to choose counseling — with rates of 7 percent among patients aged 75 and older, versus 25 percent among patients aged 18 to 29. All racial and ethnic minorities were more likely than whites to start counseling rather than medication — a finding that highlights the need for healthcare providers to consider the preferences of patients when considering treatment. “There was some older, more limited evidence that many people who are diagnosed with depression do not
begin treatment, for reasons ranging from stigma to challenges accessing behavioral health services,” said study author Beth Waitzfelder. She is an investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Honolulu. Previous research has also shown that some groups of patients are much less likely to receive treatment for depression, she added. “Our study, which was much larger than previous studies, provides important new evidence about the current scope of the problem among leading healthcare systems across the country that are striving to improve depression care in primary care settings,” Waitzfelder said in a Kaiser Permanente news release. “Screening for depression in primary care is a positive step toward improving detection, treatment, and outcome
for depression, but disparities persist,” she said. “We need a better understanding of the patient and other factors that influence treatment initiation.” Each year, more than 16 million U.S. adults experience major depression. “Over the last decade, there has been a growing effort to raise awareness about mental health and to integrate mental health care into primary care,” Waitzfelder said. “This is a positive development since most people receive care from primary
care providers,” she added. “However, our study shows there is a lot more work to do to understand why many depressed patients do not begin treatment.” It may be hard to come to terms with being diagnosed with depression as an African American. However, with the right support and follow through to receiving treatment, inner issues within the black community can finally start to heal. Find out more about depression and your options on BlackDoctor.org.
