On Saturday, May 20, 2017 The Milwaukee Urban League (MUL), together with Johnson Controls, presented laptops (which were provided by Johnson Controls) to 30 students who participated in this year's "Youth Leadership Summit" held at Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, 11111 W. Liberty Ave. The summit provided the students an opportunity to partake in a number of seminars to train them in leadership skills, conflict resolution, financial
literacy, and community involvement. All in all, it was a day of inspiring, positive change. The 16th Annual Reverend James W. Spann II Scholarship Luncheon was held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Ramada Inn Downtown, 633 West Michigan St. Six high school seniors were awarded scholarships to assist with their college education and career plans. Local educator and community activist Reuben Harpole was the keynote speaker. The Spann Scholarship Foundation was established by Dr. Wilma Spann, a retired MPS administrator, in her late husband’s name. The foundation was formed in January, 2001 to continue his ministry and legacy. The Booker T. Washington Society hosts the 'Booker T. Washington Essay Contest and Awards Celebration for African American Boys' On Saturday, May 20, 2017 The Booker T. Washington Society, along with the Booker T. Boosters, hosted its "Booker T. Washington Essay Contest and Awards Celebration for African American Boys," at the Running Rebels Center, 1300A West Fond du Lac Ave. The essay subject was "I Choose 3 Booker T. Washington Principles to Achieving My Dreams." During the event the top four essay writers got the chance to read their essays as well as receive their award. Being Frank The USA is the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. That is the slogan of this country. Americans pride themselves on their unique way of life that supports freedom. The American lifestyle is envied all over the world. If the American lifestyle is so wonderful, why do so many American citizens need to use drugs to escape? The argument about people needing certain drugs to relax is as old as writing. First, the escape of choice was alcohol in its various forms. I can’t speculate why people in medieval times needed to escape. I can speculate on why, in a country with so much technology and opportunity, the citizens have become

junkies via medical or illegal drugs. The new/ old drug of popularity is marijuana. The marijuana debate has raged in this country for at least four decades. The drug was first viewed as a menace to society. It became the chosen drug of the hippie
movement. It is now the drug of choice by everyone who listens to hip hop music. The arguments for marijuana range from wonder drug to gateway to hell. Marijuana is just the latest excuse people use to deal with or escape the misery of their lives. Ask yourself about your life. Analyze what you do and be honest with yourself. Parents, look at your children and the drink in your hands. Spouses, look around your relationship; then look at the marijuana you toke so reverently. If everything in your life is going swell, why then do you need a drug to escape? “I am not escaping when
I drink, smoke or toot. I am having fun.” I have heard that speech before. I am not some pious religious fanatic who judges. I’m a person who has been there and realized that there is no escape from misery via drugs or alcohol. If what you are doing is so great, then why do you need to be inebriated when you do it? If you enjoy being around the people you hang with, why do you have to get drunk to be around them? If you like the activities you do, why then do you have to blaze up a blunt to partake? The only person you have to give an answer to is yourself. Americans like to wave the flag to the world about the American way of life and its dream. Why is the USA one of the main landing spots for illegal drugs in the world? The Columbians and Triads aren’t rushing to send their products to Afghanistan. The drugs are coming to US soil. Why? The people are not as happy as they think and many don’t even know they are miserable. My challenge is simple. Go a week doing whatever
you do sober. If the party is still fun sober, then it may be fun. If you can do your job without coming home and drinking a few, then your job may be for you. If you can look that person in the face and indulge with them sober without a shot and blunt, then you may enjoy that person. If you cannot perform your regular duties or obligations without getting high or buzzed, then you know the answer. Try this for one week. You have nothing to lose. If you don’t like it, the weed man will still be there. The liquor store will still be on the corner. If you do like it, then you will be saving money and possibly your life. National Awareness Month: National Hunger Awareness (Part 1) June is the home of many dates devoted to raising awareness for important issues. This month’s column will be dedicated to raising awareness to certain issues such as hunger awareness, men’s health, and AIDS awareness. Each week you will be given information regarding how you can help, as Albert Einstein reminds us: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” This week, this writer will begin with Hunger Awareness, especially as it relates to senior citizens. Many low-income seniors must decide each month between whether to pay for medications, health care or food. According to Feeding America, food insecurity involving seniors is a reality. The latest statistics report: In 2015, 2.9 million (8 percent) households with seniors age 65 and older experienced food insecurity. More than 1.2 million (9 pecent) households composed of seniors living alone experienced food insecurity.

Seniors are: • 60 percent more likely to experience depression • 53 percent more likely to report a heart attack • 52 percent more likely to develop asthma • 40 percent more likely to report an experience of congestive heart failure The number of food insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50 percent when the youngest of the Baby Boom Generation reaches age 60 in 2025.
For seniors, protecting oneself from food insecurity and hunger can be more difficult than for the general population. For example, a study that focused on the experience of food insecurity among the elderly population found that food-insecure seniors sometimes had enough money to purchase food but did not have the resources to access or prepare food due to lack of transportation, functional limitations, or health problems. Bucks and Johnson Controls announce $150,000 multi-sport complex at Browning Elementary
Today, the Bucks and Johnson Controls jointly revealed plans to build a $150,000 multi-sport complex on the campus of Browning Elementary School and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center in Milwaukee’s Westlawn neighborhood. “Our partners at Johnson Controls share our vision for the future of Milwaukee and our commitment to ensuring the impact of our downtown development radiates throughout the community,” Bucks President Peter Feigin said. “Helping children flourish today is integral to the well-being of our community in the future. Together, the Bucks and Johnson Controls are committed to providing a safe haven for Milwaukee youth to put them on the path towards becoming responsible and productive citizens who will continue to carry our city forward.” Given this focus, the Bucks and Johnson Controls are donating a $150,000 multisport complex to Milwaukee Public Schools, the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center and the Housing Authority of Milwaukee. The complex will include six basketball courts, one futsal court, a soccer field and additional recreation space, all contained within a 200-meter track. The courts have been
configured to allow flexibility for use of other sports, such as volleyball and tennis, and will be well lit to provide a safe space for recreation during evening hours as well. The entire project will be completed before children return to school this fall. “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the Bucks, MPS and the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center on this project. The plans for the court and programming were developed with strong input and excellent ideas from MPS and the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, who kept the needs of the children they serve paramount,” said Grady Crosby, Vice President Public Affairs, Chief Diversity Officer and President, Johnson
Controls Foundation. “Johnson Controls has a particular interest in making sure that this neighborhood has the resources it needs for its young people. Through this gift, the kids who play in this space will be able to develop athletically, and they will also receive the opportunity to connect with and learn from mentors, coaches and teammates. We are investing in this multi-use court and programming because we believe it takes all of us, working together, to keep our neighborhoods strong and healthy.” In addition to building the athletic complex, the Bucks and Johnson Controls will commit an annual gift of $60,000 for the next 10 years towards community pro-

Board approves 2017-18 MPS budget that increases support to schools and students The Milwaukee Board of School Directors on Thursday, May 25, 2017 approved a 2017-18 budget of $1.17 billion for Milwaukee Public Schools that is down 1.8 percent or $21 million compared to the current school year. "I would like to recognize the Board for their collaborative work in what was a very difficult budget. This budget was not able to provide much in additional funding but still responds to the growing needs of our students and staff," said Dr. Darienne Driver. The plan puts students first, continues the service/ delivery reorganization of Central Services, and provides additional support to schools. While every budget has challenges, this budget proved to be particularly difficult due to uncertainty in funding at the state and federal levels combined with increasing healthcare costs and flat revenues. The reorganization, flat revenues and increasing healthcare costs will result in the elimination of seven positions in Central Services and 187 school-based positions. However, due to vacancy and turnover, the number of layoffs resulting
from position reductions will be minimal. Key highlights of the budget include: • Realignment of services in the offices of School Administration, Academics, and Innovation & Information to provide greater support to schools • Creation of a new Transformation Network with eight school zones designed to improve academic and school performance • Design of new regional service hubs to transform and improve teaching and learning • Support for the new Department of Black & Latino Male Achievement • Placement of a full-time school support teacher every school • Focus on improving school climate at the six comprehensive middle schools by appointing deans of students • Support for plans to increase high-performing, in-demand programs For more information on the proposed 2017-18 budget, please visit mpsmke.com/budget.

Don’t let cataracts cloud your ability to see life to the fullest
African Americans have nearly twice the risk of developing cataracts than Caucasians. This difference may be due to other medical illnesses, particularly diabetes. Black Americans are also much more likely to become blind from cataracts and glaucoma than white people, mostly due to lack of treatment. Despite this threat, most people don’t know the facts about cataracts until they are “eyeto-eye” with one. Don’t let poor vision cloud your future. Educate yourself about cataract symptoms, risks and removal. Then, ask yourself if it’s time for you to have an eye exam. What exactly is a cataract? “A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens located inside the eye behind the pupil,” says Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading ophthalmology practice recognized for providing advanced medical, surgical and laser treatment of most all eye conditions. “This lens works like a camera lens— focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye to form the images you see. As you age, changes can cause clouding of this lens. This clouding is called a ‘cataract.’ As the clouding advances, it can blur and glare vision to the point of inhibiting dayto-day functioning. Depending on the type of cataract, the clouding may take years or just months to progress.” What increases the risk of developing a cataract? • Age (cataracts develop with time, like age spots and wrinkles—six out of 10 people over age 60 have some form of cataract) • Diabetes (doubles the risk for cataracts and glaucoma) •Cortisone/steroid use • Long-term unprotected sunlight exposure • Previous eye injury • Smoking How do you get rid of a cataract? “There are no drugs, drops, glasses or exercises that can prevent or cure cataracts,” says Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and partner at Eye Care Specialists. “The only effective treatment is to make an opening in the eye, surgically remove the cloudy lens (cataract), and replace it with an intraocular lens implant (IOL) to once again focus light rays onto the retina,” adds Rhode, who, along with the rest of the surgeons at
Eye Care Specialists, uses the most advanced techniques to gently break up and remove cataracts through a tiny incision. What are the symptoms? Losing your vision is not a fact of life as you grow older. Schedule an eye exam if you notice: • Foggy, fuzzy, blurred or double vision • Sensitivity to light and glare • “Starbursts” around lights • Holding items closer to view • Needing brighter light to read • Fading or yellowing of colors • Difficulty judging stairs or curbs • Difficulty seeing to drive at night • Vision changes affecting the ability to do tasks • Glasses and prescription changes don’t help When should you have surgery? Daniel Ferguson, MD, an ophthalmologist with thousands of cases under his surgical cap advises, “It’s not necessary to wait to remove a cataract until it’s so ripe that almost all vision is blocked. In fact, if you wait too long, it can grow so dense that the operation becomes more difficult. If a cataract is preventing you from doing tasks, new glasses won’t improve clarity, and no other major eye conditions exist which would keep you from having a positive outcome (like severe macular degeneration), then it’s time for surgery.” Why do some people hesitate to have surgery? “Some people delay surgery because they think it’s unaffordable. They don’t realize it’s covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance plans. Others think they are too old or that poor vision is just a fact of life that comes with age. cataracts is usually reversible, and with today’s advanced techniques and equipment, cataract removal is one of the safest outpatient operations—even for the very elderly,” says Freedman. What happens once you decide to have the cataract removed? Cataract surgery is NOT performed in the office or on the day of your initial appointment. First, you must meet the surgeon and have preparatory tests done. Once you and your doctor decide to proceed with surgery, you will have a comprehensive eye exam to see if any other existing conditions (such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and macular degeneration) could detract from your surgery results. Your exam will also include a quick, painless ultrasound procedure to determine the prescription for the IOL implant that will restore
focusing ability in your eye. What happens before surgery? Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an eye surgeon with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins, explains, “We enter information regarding the length of the eye and curvature of the cornea into a special computer that calculates the power of IOL which would best restore vision to pre-cataract levels. We then customize the type of implant and surgical technique to fit the patient’s needs—taking into consideration overall health, any diabetic or retinal problems, lifestyle, and other factors. We never lose sight of the fact that even though our practice has performed tens of thousands of cataract procedures, each patient is unique and is treated accordingly.” How does the lens implant restore vision?
Eye Care Specialists ophthalmologist and surgeon Michael Raciti, MD, explains, “After the cloudy lens (about the size of an aspirin) has been removed, the artificial lens implant (IOL) is inserted through the same opening and placed permanently inside the eye to provide focusing ability, peripheral (side) vision, and depth perception. IOLs not only provide sharper vision, but often improve sight to levels not seen in years. Standard IOLs are like miniature internal contact lenses set for a single prescription power—usually to provide clear vision in the distance for driving, watching TV, and other tasks. Most patients with these lenses still need reading glasses or bifocals. Newer ‘premium’ IOLs can adjust for astigmatism or provide multiple focusing (Continued on pg. 14)
