Ralph Hollmon receives honorary doctorate from Medical College of Wisconsin On Friday, May 19, 2017 the Medical College of Wisconsin held its 2017 Commencement ceremony at the Milwaukee Theatre downtown. As well as handing out diplomas to graduates, the Medical College bestowed an honorary doctorate to former Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Ralph Hollmon for his decades of community outreach efforts. Hollmon received the honor along with three other individuals this year including Brigham Health president Elizabeth G. Nabel, MD; Growing Power founder and CEO Will Allen; and Benedict Center director Donna M. Hietpas.

Black Health Coalition, Inc. hosts '14th Annual African American Walk for Quality Health' The Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin hosted its 14th annual African American Walk for Quality Health on Saturday, June 3, 2017. The walk is aimed to garner citywide support for the Wisconsin African American Eliminating Health Disparities Institute. The theme for Saturday’s walk was “Black Moms and Grandmothers Against Toy Guns.”

Black Health Coalition president Patricia McManus RN, PhD, CNPM (left) said they are not anti-gun; rather, they don’t want children exposed to weapons at such a young age — even if they are fake. “Because of what happens in our community, we need them to be old enough to understand what it means to have a gun and be responsible,” said McManus. Another key reason for the walk was to engage the community in a healthy, meaningful activity. The honorary chair for this year's walk was Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker, FACHE (center); and University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships Director Gina Green-Harris, MBA (right).

Cardinal Stritch University hosts 2017 Alumni Awards On Saturday, June 3, 2017 Cardinal Stritch University and the Alumni Association hosted the 2017 Alumni Awards, "A Celebration of Alumni Pride and Excellence," at Cardinal Stritch campus, 6801 North Yates Rd. The Alumni Awards honor graduates of Cardinal Stritch who have excelled in their professional field and in the community. Among the award recipients were Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Dr. Eve Hall (right), class of 2009, who received the Graduate of the Last Decade Award; Trey Triplett (center), class of 2010 and Stritch men's basketball all-time leading scorer with 2,210 points, was honored with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame; and Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver (left), who is not a graduate of Cardinal Stritch, but was honored with the St. Francis Service Award - University Supporter for her support in the community and of Stritch graduates in the Milwaukee Public Schools system.

More than 75 valedictorians and salutatorians honored at board meeting

The top graduates from high schools across Milwaukee Public Schools were honored for their impressive academic accomplishments on Thursday, May 25, 2017 by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors at the Board's regular monthly meeting.

"Receiving the esteemed distinction as valedictorian or salutatorian is something that takes incredible persistence and these students have truly earned this honor," said MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver. "We applaud our graduates as they head out to universities here in Milwaukee and all across the U.S. They are

the future of this city and our country."

Valedictorians and salutatorians from the MPS Class of 2017 are off to diverse destinations ranging from the University of San Diego and Alverno College to Marquette University and Milwaukee Area Technical College, to Georgia Tech, the University of Chicago, the University of Arizona, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Minnesota, Emerson College and more.

City of Milwaukee Health Department and Molina Healthcare announce lead-safe Milwaukee partnership

Joint effort to support continued reduction of childhood lead poisoning by providing testing, resources at special events Mayor Tom Barrett and the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) have announced a partnership with Molina Healthcare of Wisconsin to expand the reach of the citywide Lead-Safe Milwaukee public awareness campaign.

“The City of Milwaukee has aggressively worked to reduce children’s exposure to lead hazards, and can report that we have recorded significant declines in lead poisoning,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. “As we continue our work to drive down rates even further, we welcome Molina Healthcare as a committed partner in our efforts.”

The MHD reports that the prevalence of blood lead levels of 10 μg/dL (micrograms per deciliter) in children under age 6 has decreased by 90 percent since 1997, while testing of children has increased by 66 percent during the same time period. At a lower level of exposure, the prevalence of elevated blood lead levels of 5 μg/ dL has decreased by 64 percent since 2003.* As of 2015, three percent of Milwaukee children under age 6 have blood lead tests at 10 μg/dL and 11.6 percent of children have blood lead tests at a lower level of 5 μg/dL. “Preventing lead exposure is a top health priority,” said Health Commissioner Bevan K. Baker. “By expanding our existing outreach efforts through a partnership with Molina Healthcare, we can help more families in our targeted areas become aware of the various sources of lead, the steps they can take to prevent exposure, and the

The Lead-Safe Milwaukee campaign was launched as part of a comprehensive effort to increase awareness of lead hazards and the primary steps that help to reduce children’s exposure to lead.

The most common source of high blood lead levels in children remains lead-based paint hazards, while additional sources of exposure can include drinking water, soil, and even imported products or folk remedies.

As part of this new partnership, MHD and Molina Healthcare will be providing Lead-Safe Milwaukee information and resources, free blood lead testing for children, and take-home prevention kits at a series of events.

These kits will include disposable wet wipes to help families safely clean up leadbased paint hazards; drinking water filters for those who live in homes with lead service lines; and information on additional prevention steps and resources, including the MHD’s

Primary Prevention Program, which provides subsidized window replacement in targeted zip codes in Milwaukee.

Molina has also supported the purchase of two additional blood lead testing machines for the MHD. “Molina Healthcare is proud to be teaming up with Mayor Barrett and the City of Milwaukee Health Department on the LeadSafe Milwaukee campaign,” said Molina Healthcare of Wisconsin Plan President Scott Johnson. “Our company’s mission to help those in need extends beyond quality health coverage. We believe that a healthy environment, free from exposure to lead hazards from paint, water, and soil, is vital to the success of every child, family and community.”

Rebuilding Our Community

For a lot of people Memorial Day is often confused with Veterans Day in terms of importance and meaning. As a grateful nation we take out considerable time each year to honor those who have served or are currently serving in one of the five branches of the military.

Memorial Day (last Monday in May) is a time to honor those lost during wars and combat, while Veterans Day (November 11) celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. Regardless of how one feels about these two special days, we should not forget that many of the liberties we enjoy today are because

of those who defended and serve to protect those freedoms.

These times are not just about honoring those who so bravely served to defend the rights of us all, but these are also times to refocus on what is so important in life... freedom, family and faith.

Without a doubt, these times help us to gain some insights into what real sacrifices look like and that each day there are military service members in harm’s way around the world. And in the words of Colonel Nathan Jessup (played by Jack Nicholson) in the movie ‘A Few Good Men’... “You want

me on that wall and you need me on that wall.” Nothing says it so clearly about the ongoing commitments of so many during these times of shifting politics, conflicts and terrorism.

Too often we do not treasure what we have until it is gone, challenged or becomes questioned. It takes a lot to

keep a strong military going, to keep things safe and to maintain peace. The one thing that has been the backbone of our great nation has been the ability to advance U.S. values, interests and objectives. In addition, our military defends the values of human rights, restores peace and guards against tyranny.

It’s a tall order and the mission is ongoing... “to defend the Constitution of the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic...”

Now that is the hard part, where the rubber meets the road. Not only do we need boots on the ground to defend our freedoms globally; we

also need social and economic boots on the ground to turn around many of our most challenging communities. We are in dire need of support from a new wave of community foot soldiers who will help take on restorative justice, economic empowerment, and holistic healing. So, I say... It’s time to strap them up!

National Awareness Month (part 2): National HIV Testing Day (June 27, 2017) Each year, on June 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AIDS.gov, and other national and local entities across the country organize National HIV Testing Day. The 2017 theme is: “Test Your Way. Do It Today.” National HIV Testing Day was launched in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS in response to the growing number of HIV infections in communities of color and other heavily impacted communities. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s like other viruses, such as those that cause colds and the flu, with one important difference — the human body cannot get rid of HIV. That means if you get HIV, you get it for life.

Nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the U.S., and almost 1 in 8 doesn’t know they are infected and nearly 45,000 people a year find out they have HIV. HIV testing is a critical first step in taking control and responsibility over one's health.

Need some more inspiration in your day?

Three reasons to get an HIV test: 1. Finding out early can help you live a longer, healthier life. If you’re HIV-positive, it means that the virus is inside you — even though you may not feel sick. And that’s why it is good to find out early. There are treatments now that are available to you that can keep you healthy. You can find support, so that you stay connected to care.

2. If you know, you can look out for yourself — and the people you love. The earlier you know, the more you can do. Knowing early allows you to help yourself. And it may help you to be there for the people you love. Also, studies have shown that

when people find out they have HIV, they are more likely to take steps to protect their health and that of their partners.

3. It’s easy. It’s free, fast, and confidential. Many clinics and testing locations offer free HIV tests. You can even get confidential or anonymous HIV tests.

What can you do?

• Educate yourself, friends and family about HIV and AIDS and what you can do to protect yourself.

• Get tested for HIV. To find a testing site near you, call 1-800-CDC-INFO (232-4636), or on your cell phone, text your ZIP code to KNOWIT (566948).

• Speak out against the stigma, homophobia, racism,

and other forms of discrimination associated with HIV and AIDS. • Donate time to HIV and AIDS organizations that work in African American communities.

MPS sets school uniform guidelines for all students

Milwaukee Public Schools is launching a district wide uniform policy that will begin with the start of the 2017–18 school year.

The new policy implements school uniforms for all students in all district schools. A few schools have declined the uniform policy.

Parents have the option to excuse their children from wearing uniforms by requesting and filing a form with the child’s school.

The policy sets basic uniform guidelines that apply to ki-style/uniform pants that navy blue. What Black parents must do this summer

By Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu There is a three-year achievement gap between Black and White students.

Many people love to believe it’s due to income, fatherlessness, educational attainment of the parent, and lack of parental involvement. I believe a major reason for the gap is we continue to close schools for the summer as if we are an agrarian economy. Very few Black youth will be farming this summer.

If you multiply 3 months by 12 years, you will see the three-year achievement gap.

There is nothing wrong with Black youth if their schools remained open during the summer and/or their parents kept them academically engaged.

Middle-income parents who value education enroll their children in some type of academic experience during the summer. They also visit libraries, museums, zoos and colleges. Other parents allow their children to sleep longer, play more video Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu games, watch more television and play basketball until they can’t see the hoop. These in September the same work students will have to review they had mastered in May.

Most museums have discounted days. A male friend of mine shared his experience with me when he took his family to the museum.

He wondered why so many people were staring at him.

His wife and children had to tell him he was the only Black man in the building! I am appealing to every father to take his children this summer to the library, museum, and the zoo. I am appealing to every mother; if he won’t, you must.

We need every parent to make sure their child reads at least one book per week and to write a book report. I am reminded of the formula Sonya Carson used to develop Ben Carson to become the best pediatric neurosurgeon. This low-income single parent, with a third-grade education, had enough sense to tell her sons to turn off the television, read a book and write a report that her

sister would grade!

I have a theory that I can go into your house and within 5 minutes tell you the type of student who lives there and predict their future. I believe that engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants etc, need different items in their house than ballplayers, rappers, and criminals. I am very concerned when I visit a house that has more CDs and downloads than books.

My company, African American Images, has designed a special collection of books for boys. Research shows one of the major reasons boys dislike reading is because of the content. The set is titled Best Books for Boys. We also have one for girls, parents and teachers. Enjoy your summer. Let’s close the gap.

Dark skin isn’t protection from deadly skin cancer Contrary to what many believe, dark skin doesn’t offer protection against deadly melanomas, an expert warns.

This type of skin cancer can be affected by genetics and is far more likely to develop on sun-protected areas of the body in blacks, Hispanics and even Asians, according to researcher Dr. Arthur Rhodes. He’s director of the Melanoma Surveillance Clinic at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

“The misconception that the sun is responsible for all cases of melanoma leads to lower survival rates because of delayed diagnosis, particularly among people of col-

or,” Rhodes said in a Rush news release.

Only 10 to 15 percent of melanomas are caused by excessive sun exposure, typically in heavily freckled and sun-damaged skin, he noted.

A 2016 American Academy of Dermatology study found that while melanoma incidence is higher in whites, death rates from the cancer are higher among people of color.

“Far too often, black, Hispanic, and Asian patients with melanoma cancer tell us they believed that melanoma was only a danger for sun-seeking whites,” the study authors wrote. “But

anyone — regardless of skin color — may develop melanoma, in both sun-exposed and sun-protected sites. Not noticing or ignoring a new or changing mole in a sun-pro-

tected site can be fatal.”

Early detection is crucial for melanoma survival.

Rhodes stressed the need for monthly self-examinations and checks of difficult-to-see areas on the body to look for new moles or changes in size, shape or color of a pre-existing mole.

“Half of all melanomas in non-whites occur on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, nailbeds, mucous membranes, perianal area, genitalia, and other areas that are not exposed to the sun, areas that are difficult to selfexamine and commonly ignored,” he said.

can progress without symptoms or signs, leading to a delayed diagnosis that may result in an increased risk of death, especially for people of color, he added.

Risk factors for melanoma include a personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancer, a mole that’s present within two weeks of birth, having a lot of moles or having unusual moles, having a lot of freckles or red hair, and having multiple sunburns as a child, according to the Rush University dermatology department.

Patients deciding whether to have a double knee replacement must carefully consider the pros and cons, an orthopedic surgeon says.

“Many people want to have a double knee replacement because they feel they can get it over with faster since there’s one surgery, one hospital stay and one course of rehabilitation,” said Dr. Geoffrey Westrich.

Called a “bilateral procedure,” double knee replacement enables people with severely arthritic knees to get back to their normal lives faster, “and for the right pa-

tient, it’s a good option,” said Westrich. He is research director of adult reconstruction and joint replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

“However, double knee replacement is not for everyone, and people should be well-informed before making a decision,” he added.

Double knee replacement has a higher rate of complications, including heart problems and blood clots.

Turkey, Spinach and Apple Wrap

Recipe reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research 1 tablespoon reduced-fat mayonnaise 2 teaspoons honey mustard 2 whole-wheat lavash wraps or flour tortillas (8 inches each) 2 cups baby spinach leaves, loosely packed, washed and dried 4 thin slices turkey breast 1/4 Granny Smith apple, sliced paper-thin Combine mayonnaise and mustard.

Lay out both wraps. Spread edges of each with mayonnaise mixture.

Leaving space on one side of wraps, arrange layer of greens on top of wraps. Top each layer with two slices of turkey. Evenly divide apple slices and lay lengthwise across turkey. Fold over one end of wrap then both sides. Roll wrap as tightly as possible toward opposite side.

Cover each wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate seamside down, up to 4 hours, before serving. To serve, remove plastic wrap and cut each wrap in half at an angle.

Substitution: Two large leaves of soft, leafy green lettuce can be used in place of baby spinach leaves.

Recipe courtesy of the National Chicken Council Servings: 4 Tomato-Cucumber Salsa: 2 plum tomatoes, diced 1 small cucumber, peeled and sliced 1/2 green pepper, julienned 1/4 purple onion, sliced 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon basil 1/8 teaspoon oregano 1/8 teaspoon Greek seasoning 1/8 teaspoon sugar 1/8 teaspoon dry mustard Salad: 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves

1 cup asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces 1/2 cup shitake mushroom caps, sliced 1 package Seeds of Change Quinoa, Brown & Red Rice with Flaxseeds 1/4 cup slivered almonds Salsa Verde (optional): 1 bunch scallions 1 clove garlic 1/2 cup packed cilantro leaves 1/2 cup packed mint leaves 1/2 cup packed basil leaves 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil Heat oven to 400 F. In oven-proof pan, season salmon with salt and pepper, and drizzle each fillet with olive oil. Bake 12-15 minutes, until cooked through.

In blender or food processor, combine all Salsa Verde ingredients and pulse until fully incorporated but still rustic and chunky. Set aside.

In medium saute pan over medium-high heat, heat remaining olive oil. Add mushrooms and asparagus and saute vigorously 3-5 minutes. Add grains and slivered almonds, and continue to saute until heated through, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, to taste.

Divide grains among eight plates, place a piece of salmon on each plate then finish with dollop of Salsa Verde, if desired, and serve.

Substitution: Shitake mushroom caps may be substituted with button mushrooms or other wild mushrooms.

cup melted butter lemon, juiced teaspoon freshly ground pepper teaspoon garlic powder teaspoon oregano teaspoon Greek seasoning package mixed Italian salad greens ounces feta cheese, crumbled black olives pepperoncini peppers To make Tomato-Cucumber Salsa: In medium bowl, mix together tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, purple onion, red wine vinegar, olive oil, vegetable oil, pepper, salt, basil, oregano, Greek seasoning, sugar and dry mustard. Chill until ready to serve.

Heat oven to 350 F. Place chicken in baking dish. In medium bowl, mix together butter, lemon juice, pepper, garlic powder, oregano and Greek seasoning; pour over chicken. Bake about 50 minutes, uncovered, basting occasionally.

Place salad greens in large serving bowl.

Top with Tomato-Cucumber Salsa. Slice chicken in thin strips and arrange on top of salad. Sprinkle with feta cheese and garnish with olives and pepper.

Public Notification of Completion of Two National Out-ofhospital Cardiac Arrest Research Studies in Milwaukee County Two national research studies on the effect of uninterrupted chest compressions (CCC) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) versus chest compressions with interruptions for ventilations (30:2) CPR and the effect of the heart medications amiodarone or lidocaine on survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest have been completed in Milwaukee County.

About the research These studies were performed by the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (ROC) - a collaboration of 10 U.S. and Canadian sites that perform emergency research. A total of 26,148 patients were enrolled in the CPR study, and a total of 3,026 patients were enrolled in the heart medication study. Milwaukee County was one of the ROC sites where Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Services and the Medical College of Wisconsin performed this research.

Of the 26,148 patients enrolled nationwide in the CPR study, 2,129 patients were enrolled in Milwaukee County between February 2012 and May 2015. 1,296 patients (61%) were male and 833 (39%) were female. 1,041 patients (49%) were Caucasian, 676 (32%) were African-American, 34 (2%) were Asian, 6 (less than 1%) were Alaskan Native/American Indian, 1 (less than 1%) was Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, and 371 (17%) were unreported race. 85 patients (4%) were Hispanic.

Of the 3,026 patients enrolled nationwide in the heart medication study, 354 patients were enrolled in Milwaukee County between January 2013 and October 2015. 265 patients (75%) were male and 89 (25%) were female. 191 patients (54%) were Caucasian, 122 (34%) were African-American, 10 (3%) were Asian, 1 (less than 1%) was Alaskan Native/American Indian, and 30 (8%) were unreported race. 8 patients (2%) were Hispanic.

Study Results The CPR study found no significant difference in survival to hospital discharge for patients who received CCC compressions (9.0%) compared to those that received 30:2 compressions (9.7%). The study also found no significant difference in survival with favorable outcome between patients in the two treatment groups.

The heart medications study found no significant difference in survival to hospital discharge for patients who received amiodarone (24.4%) or lidocaine (23.7%) versus placebo (21.0%). The study also found no significant difference in survival with favorable outcome between patients in the three treatment groups. Patients who received amiodarone or lidocaine had about the same amount and type of side effects as the patients who received placebo.
