Untied Healthcare and Housing Authority host 'Baby Box Community Baby Shower'

On Saturday, June 9, 2018, the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM), United Healthcare, and Baby Box, Co. presented the "Baby Box Community Baby Shower," at the Cherry Court Apartments, 1525 N. 24th Street. The event featured workshops on safe sleeping, car seat safety, baby care, parenting, and breastfeeding. There were also opportunities for raffles, games, and questions and answer sessions. All registered participants also received a complementary "baby box" from Baby Box, Co. filled with educational information, products, and service offers. North Division Alumni Association hosts '50s and 60's class reunion On Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9, 2018, the North Division Alumni Association hosted a class reunion for the classes of the 1950s and the 1960s. Friday night's event was held at 3041 North night club, 3401 W. North Avenue, which featured a dinner program and social hour. Saturday's event entitled, "A Gathering in the Park," was hosted at Dretzka Park Chalet, Photo by Yvonne Kemp 12020 W. Bradley Rd, and featured food, music, and dancing (Step'n). The event was an opportunity to catch up with old friends, and share fond memories of their high school days.
Mount Zion Assembly Healing Temple Apostous Faith says a fond farewell to church leader, Elder Ricky Price, Sr. On Sunday, June 10, 2018, Mount Zion Assembly Healing Temple hosted a "Grand Finale" for their Elder of 38 years, Elder Ricky Price, Sr. and First Lady Dr. Monica Parchia Price (pictured below) as they celebrated his retirement at their church at 4300 N. Green bay Ave. Elder Price and his wife were joined by his family, friends, and church family to celebrate his final day as a church leader. Even Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was on hand for the occasion and presented a proclamation to Elder Price.

What is Juneteenth and what does it commemorate?
What is Juneteenth and why is it an important event in black history? The holiday dates back to June 19, 1865, when Texas slaves were freed well after other black Americans won their liberty. Texas declared Juneteenth a state holiday on Jan. 1, 1980, and today 36 states recognize or observe Juneteenth as a holiday. Barbecuing, sipping strawberry soda and picnicking are some of the rituals that mark the celebration. Since the 1970s, a movement has been under way to make Juneteenth an official national holiday or day of observance. This year Milwaukee will observer Junteenth on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at 19th & Atkinson to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. This event will include a block party with food, entertainment, a parade and various vendors. Origins of the holiday President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in the states rebelling against the Union, became law on Jan. 1, 1863. Many slaves in the Confederacy heard of this presidential decree by eavesdropping on slave owners speaking with Union soldiers or by word of mouth. But not all slaves received the news that Lincoln had
just turned the Civil War into a moral cause against slavery. This was the case for the slaves living in Texas. They did not hear the news until after the war had already ended. Texas was isolated throughout the war as the Union army had no presence there, and many Confederate slave owners sent their slaves to Texas so that the Union army could not free them. When Gen. Gordon Granger entered Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, he announced that all Texas slaves were free through an official proclamation (General Order No. 3). The state's slaves numbered around 200,000, and they responded with jubilation, holding celebrations all over Texas.

On Saturday, June 9, 2018, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin was joined by U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), at a rally at Milwaukee's Italian Conference Center, 631 E. Chicago St. And there was certainly plenty of buzz as someone in the crowd shouted to Harris: "Run for president." Harris responded: "Thank you. But I'm here for Tammy." Harris is Baldwin's fifth Democratic Senate colleague to visit the state in the campaign, following appearances by Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, and Corey Booker of New Jersey. out the vote in Milwaukee. U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, (D-Milwaukee) also appeared at the rally. In her speech, Baldwin discussed taking on special interests across a range of issues, including taxes and health care. She talked about being a child of nine, with a pre-existing medical condition, and being hospitalized for three months. "It made me want to be in public service to create opportunities for everyone to have affordable health care," she said. Health care is emerging as a key fault line in the race. Baldwin backs the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, and has signed on to independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' "Medicare-for-all" proposal.

Total forgiveness: Don't blame God (Week 3) This month, this column is looking at “Forgiveness” and especially emphasizing a Spiritual Enrichment Women’s Retreat sponsored by the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Milwaukee. The overall theme was: “Godly Women Forgive Totally.” Tammy Porter, the retreat’s coordinator, expounded about why some people blame God for bad situations. Natural disasters and extreme weather such as drought, storms, wildfires, and floods are affecting people around the globe. We are just six months into 2018 and already we have seen disasters. Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano has erupted dramatically after a 5.0 magnitude quake causing lava to spew into a residential subdivision. The entire island of Puerto Rico
lost power again in April 2018, just 210 days after its grid first collapsed during Hurricane Maria in September 2017. As human tragedies continue to darken our landscape, many unbelievers grapple with the issue of suffering and ask: if God truly exists, then why are there so many natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, mudslides, dam failures, volcano eruptions, tornadoes, and earthquakes? Why do bad things happen to good people, and for that matter, why do bad things happen at all? Where is God while all of this is happening? These and other reasonable questions anticipate reasonable answers. They often cut deep into the heart of the Christian faith and challenge its very foun-
dation. Disasters, crises and suffering often prompts the skeptic to argue: (1) there is no good purpose for suffering and pain; and (2) an all good God must have a good purpose for everything so there cannot be an all good God. Unfortunately, we cannot always give an answer that satisfies the souls of those who hurt and make sense of their pain. However, there are those who use suffering as a reason to deny God’s existence, love, or goodness, or even to blame God. As we consider the skeptic’s arguments, first we need
to make a distinction. There is a difference between our knowing the purpose for suffering and God having a purpose for it. Even if we don’t know God’s purpose, He may still have a good reason for allowing suffering in our lives. Therefore, we cannot assume that there is no good purpose for something just because we don’t know what it could be. Secondly, we must not ignore the presence of sin in this world introduced to the human race in the Garden of Eden by the person who first sinned, Lucifer, renamed Satan. (Isa. 14:12-15, cf. Ez. 28:11-15.) Sin arises from the abuse of moral freedom and can be blamed for the corrosion of morals, spiritual deprivation, the decline of values and godly principles,
and including, but not limited to, the presence of pain and suffering in this world. Sis. Porter made it clear; before we blame God, we need to understand why there is so much suffering in our world. MPS schools awarded for academic and behavior excellence In an annual report issued by the Wisconsin Response to Intervention (RtI) Center, 108 MPS schools were recognized for achievement in reading, math, and/or behavior. Ranked Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum for the number of years meeting standards, Academy of Accelerated Learning was the only school in Wisconsin to earn Platinum in the three measured areas of reading, math, and behavior. Of the 16 schools across the state to earn Gold in any areas, MPS is proud to count 12 schools at the Gold level of recognition. The Wisconsin RtI Center assists Wisconsin’s education systems to build capacity, adopt and implement
high-quality practices, make informed decisions, and ensure sustainability of efforts and increased success for all students. Protect your family from skin cancer Although there are several different types of skin cancer, most don’t become life-threatening because they aren’t likely to spread to other parts of the body. Unfortunately, melanoma is different. If not caught early, melanoma can spread from the skin to other organs, often with deadly results. And this serious skin cancer is no longer considered just an older person’s disease. Rates are on the rise, especially among people in their teens and 20s. And research shows that the increase may be partly related to ultraviolet (UV) sun exposure during childhood. In the United States alone, the percentage of people who develop melanoma has more than doubled in the past 4 decades. You have the power to
greatly lower your family’s risk of getting melanoma. Protect yourself and your kids from the sun. Pay attention to moles on the skin. And make sure your kids know from an early age that it’s important to take sun safety seriously. Here are 3 ways to be sun safe: Use sunscreen The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that everyone, regardless of skin tone, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Whatever sunscreen you choose, make sure it’s broad-spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) and, if you and your kids are in or near water, is labeled water-resistant. Apply a generous amount and re-apply often.
Stay out of the strongest rays of the day Try to stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest (usually from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the northern hemisphere). If kids are in the sun during this time, apply and reapply sunscreen, even if they’re just playing in the backyard. Most sun damage happens from exposure
during day-to-day activities, not from being at the beach. Remember that even on cloudy, cool or overcast days, UV rays reach the earth. This “invisible sun” can cause unexpected sunburn and skin damage. Cover up One of the best ways to protect skin is to cover up. To make sure clothes offer enough protection, put your hand inside garments to make sure you can’t see it through them. Babies have thinner skin and underdeveloped melanin, so their skin burns easily. The best protection for babies under 6 months of age is shade, so they should be kept out of the sun whenever possible. If your baby must be
in the sun, dress him or her in clothing that covers the body, including hats with wide brims to shadow the face. If your baby is younger than 6 months old and still has small areas of skin (like the face) exposed, you can use a tiny amount of SPF 15 sunscreen on those areas. Older kids and adults need to escape the sun too. For outdoor events, bring along a wide umbrella. If it’s not too hot outside and won’t make you or your kids even more uncomfortable, wear light long-sleeved shirts and/or long pants. Addressing disparities in care for minorities with heart valve disease Doctors and African American communities are obligated to learn more about heart valve disease and the lifesaving procedures available to treat it, according to a report from the Association of Black Cardiologists. “It is incumbent upon us as healthcare providers [to] do a better job educating our patients about heart valve disease,” said Dr. Aaron Horne Jr., an interventional cardiologist at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Horne co-chaired the Structural Heart Disease Committee of the Association of Black Cardiologists that last year released recommendations on how to address the disparities in care for minorities with heart valve disease. The organization now intends to team up with local doctors, barbers, clergy and health advocates in black communities to promote awareness of heart valve disease and its treatments when it rolls out an educational campaign in June. Lionel Phillips, the organization’s development officer, said the group will hold presentations and health fairs in six states, including California, Texas, and Virginia. He said the cardiology association will tap into the informal health education network in those communities because, “for people to buy into a health message, they certainly have to hear it from people they trust.” Heart valve disease affects more than 5 million U.S. adults and kills an estimated 25,700 Americans each year. One type of valve condition that usually develops
later in life but can also occur at birth is aortic stenosis – a narrowing and stiffness in the aortic valve, a valve that controls the blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body, causing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath and swelling in the ankles and feet. Valve conditions can often be treated with medication. But sometimes the problem requires surgery to repair or replace a damaged valve. Options for replacing a valve include open-heart surgery and less invasive transcatheter procedures. When it comes to treatment for heart valve disease, studies have found race-related differences. For instance,

a 2013 study showed African American patients with aortic stenosis – a narrowing of the aortic valve opening – were more likely to decline valve replacement surgery than European Americans. Horne co-authored another study published last year that found black patients hospitalized for heart valve disease at Methodist Dallas were 54 percent less likely than white patients to be referred to a specialist for surgery. Dr. Benjamin Cruz, the lead author of that study, said the lower referral rate may be linked to doctor bias — a potential barrier that doctors should be made aware of and work to overcome starting in
medical school. “Only education will be able to break through” biases — and hopefully change physicians’ behavior, said Cruz, now a heart failure and heart transplant fellow at the University of Birmingham in Alabama. Dr. Keith C. Ferdinand, professor of medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans and former chair of the Association of Black Cardiologists, said doctors should take the time to learn as much as they can about their patients to better understand how their home life, work environment, educational background and personal relationships affect their health.
Ferdinand emphasized the need for doctors to learn how to talk to patients. The complicated words many doctors use to describe diseases and treatments can scare or confuse patients, he said, which may influence whether they decide to have a procedure such as valve replacement, which can extend survival and lessen symptoms. Both Horne and Ferdinand noted that black patients can also benefit from efforts to bring surgical procedures to treat heart valve diseases to more hospitals that serve a predominantly black population. “We think that we’re just missing out on too many patients,” Horne said.

Getting to know our small, independent community businesses Michael Thibou the third African American male dental hygienist to graduate from MATC Michael Thibou became the third African American male to receive a Dental Hygiene Program degree in the State of Wisconsin when he graduated from MATC on May 11, 2018. According to one of his MATC instructors, LaMont Walker, Thibou is the third African American male in Wisconsin to receive this degree. Walker said he became the first African American male when he received his Dental Hygiene degree in 1988 from Marquette. Thibou, a married father, said he worked as a hospital assistant for more than 10 years before deciding to pursue his degree in dental hygiene. The one-and-a-half year program requires several

Ken’Triana McDade is building the groundwork for a bright future By Dr. Shirley Moutry Ambitious, focused and determined are the key words that propel Ken’Triana McDade to strive for and achieve excellence. Ken’Triana is an honor student at Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School. At the end of this school year, she had earned a 4.8333 GPA and will be enering her senior year in the fall. Ken’Triana is enrolled in honors classes and was recently inducted into the National Honor Society-Rufus King Chapter. Selection into this nationwide organization is based on academic achievement, leadership, service, and character. She was also inducted into the Science National Honor Society. In addition to being a scholar, she has first place ribbons and trophies for participating in City and State Forensics, and is also active in golf, softball, First Stage Theatre, debate and STEM. Serving her community is her passion. Outside of school, Ken’Triana is a member of District 9 City Hall Youth Council. On this Council, she discusses problems impacting youth and solutions designed to create safety in the community. She served as a teachers’ assistant at Howard Montessori School reading to students, assisted in feeding the homeless and providing hygiene care packages outside of the Central Library, on weekends. Ken’Triana is involved in numerous activities at her church, New Hope Baptist
Ken’Triana McDade Church, under the spiritual guidance and leadership of Dr. Archie Ivy and First Lady Jeanette Ivy, Mother Katie Theus and Reverend Reggie Ivy. At her church, she has taken on active roles in the Youth Ministry, choir, usher, greeter/announcements, cheerleading, Bible study, and is a praise dancer. She credits her parents, Ken and Trish McDade, for their love and instilling in her the value of hardwork, self-discipline, faith in God, respect for self and others, and her sister Ken’Tasia and brother Keon’tre for their inspiring roles. She also recognizes her middle school principal at Golda Meier, and Ms. Michelle Carter; Ms. Tanzanique Carrington, principal at Rufus King International for their motivation in her goals and aspirations.
