Rotary Club of Milwaukee hosts Dr. Eve Hall for Tuesday Speakers series On Tuesday, June 18, 2019, the Rotary Club of Milwaukee hosted their Tuesday Speaker series. This series brings in guest speakers to talk about different hot topics that affect our community. This past Tuesday, the guest speaker was the Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) President and CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall, who talked about the work of the MUL and how it has grown and changed over the last 100 years but always maintained its mission to help empower African Americans and helped to change their lives. The luncheon series is regularly held at War Memorial Center's Memorial Hall, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr., 3rd Floor. Much like the MUL, the Rotary Club of Milwaukee is dedicated to help improving the lives of those in Milwaukee and offers these luncheons as a way of discussing important and pressing topics in the community. Pictured at the luncheon are (from left) MUL President and CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall and Rotary Club of Milwaukee President Ed Krishok.

National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month (Week 4) Many programs have been initiated to encourage the eating of more fruits and vegetables and educating the public as to the healthy and affordable option of growing what you eat and eating what you grow. The City of Milwaukee The City of Milwaukee, along with its partner, the Milwaukee Urban Gardens, offers seasonal garden permits for residents who would like to garden on a vacant lot next to their house or work with their neighbors to create a community green-space. To apply for a garden permit, contact Groundwork/ Milwaukee Urban Gardens 414-763-9947. Beloved, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, approximately 15 percent of the world’s food is now grown in urban areas. When it comes to neighborhood gardens, according to Milwaukee County Department of City Development, quality of life flourishes for yourself and your neighbors when you: • Improve your diet by growing fruits and vegetables; • Socialize and build bonds with neighbors while enjoying nature;

• Create a community asset that improves the safety and security of your surroundings; and • Save money on your grocery bills. MPS students soar in aeronautics careers through summer internships

At a kickoff event at Mitchell International Airport this week, 35 students from 9 MPS schools were welcomed into summer internships. Participants will work full time for seven weeks in airline operations, administration, ground support, safety, customer service, and more. The Aviation Careers Education (ACE) program is a partnership among Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee County, Mitchell International Airport, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. ACE

is designed to open career pathways for teens and offer hands-on experiences in aviation and related fields. On hand to launch the program were County Executive Chris Abele, Secretary– Designee of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Craig Thompson, MPS Director of College and Career Readiness Dr. John Hill, Aviation Education Program Manager for the WisDOT Meredith Alt, and ACE Intern Program Coordinator Jack Lake. Students and employers were introduced to

the crowd and then assumed their work duties. Through internships and apprenticeships, MPS provides students with real-world work experiences to help them explore careers

and gain valuable employable skills. MPS has numerous placements throughout the city for students to work and learn. Students who are interested in the program for next

summer or internship and apprenticeship programs for this fall should contact the Department of College and Career Readiness at (414) 475-8611.

Top health concerns impacting Black men and screening guidelines Black men continue to endure far worse health statistics than any other racial group. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Black men maintain lower life expectancy than Black women, white men, and white women. Similar to all racial groups, the overall life expectancy has increased over the past century, but despite this, Black men are still

coming in last place when it comes to taking care of their health. What are some of the reasons for this? There are several factors that can affect why some don’t follow up on their health, don’t go to the doctor as often as necessary, or are having health issues overall. Lack of economic resources, lack of health insurance, limited access to care, food

deserts, poverty, poor health literacy/health education, environmental factors, genetics, and cultural barriers/ factors can play huge roles into why some Black men are suffering these poor health statistics at such alarming rates. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the leading causes of death (LCOD) for Black males in

the United States as of 2015 are as follows: 1. Heart disease (23.9 percent of total deaths) 2. Cancer (21.4 percent of total deaths) 3. Unintentional injuries (6.5 percent of total deaths) 4. Stroke (4.9 percent of total deaths) 5. Homicide (4.9 percent of total deaths) 6. Diabetes (4.2 percent of total deaths) 7. Chronic lower respiratory diseases (3.2 percent of total deaths) 8. Kidney disease (2.7 percent of total deaths) 9. Septicemia (1.9 percent of total deaths) 10. Influenza and pneumonia (1.7 percent of total deaths) The leading causes of death within Black men shift for different age groups, and you can read more about these here. What can be done to combat some of these leading causes of death? Preventative care needs to be a priority. Many of these LCOD death aren’t necessarily a death sentence if they are prevented before onset or maintained once the individual is aware of the health issue. Often times, people can die from diseases and health issues that are diagnosed too

late or aren’t being managed properly. Regular exercise and healthy food options can help reduce some of the mentioned health risks. Let’s look more closely into a few of these LCOD to see what preventative measures can be taken to reduce these health risks. Heart disease With heart disease being the number one killer in African Americans and stroke also being a LCOD, we must take a look into how we can reduce the incidence rates of these two health issues in African American men. Regular visits to a medical professional can help to reduce the death rates for heart disease. Obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure are also risk factors associated with heart disease. Once identified, these health issues are manageable so that they do not spiral out of control. Checking blood pressure regularly and monitoring any changes in blood pressure could save a life. When looking at obesity, healthy food choices can help dramatically reduce weight in an individual. Eating more veggies, reduction in red meat, and less consumption of overall calories can help reduce risk for obesity. Lastly, diabetes is the third risk factor for heart disease. Understanding family history, warning signs, and regular visits to a medical professional can help identify and manage complications related to diabetes. Also, regular exercise can play a role in reducing the risks associated with diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. Cancer When it comes to cancer, African Americans are dying at the highest rate and have the shortest survival in comparison to any other racial groups according to the American Cancer Society. What exactly does this mean? It means that we are being diagnosed with cancer much later in its progression and because of this, our chances of survival are reduced. The cancers that commonly (Continued on pg. 14)

How payday loans work – biggest dangers and 14 better alternatives (part 1) Part I: What is the industry and how does it work? According to a survey by Bankrate, roughly 25 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The money they make just barely covers their day-to-day expenses, with little or nothing left over for emergencies. If you’re in this situation, any unplanned expense – such as a $300 car repair – can cause a financial crisis. Payday loans – also called “cash advance loans” – appear to offer a way out. You can walk into one of the thousands of payday lending offices across the country and walk out half an hour later with $300 in your hand to pay that repair bill. Then, on your next payday, you can come back in to repay that $300 – plus another $45 or so in interest. The problem is, if you had a hard time raising $300 in the first place, losing $345 out of one paycheck leaves a big hole in the budget. And so before the month is out, you could find yourself coming back for another loan to cover the bills you can no longer afford to pay. Before long, you end up entrapped in an ongoing cycle of debt, going from loan to loan, while the interest payments pile up higher and higher. A 2012 report from the Pew Charitable Trusts found that the typical payday borrower takes out eight $375 loans per year, paying a total of $520 in interest.

themselves all that interest. So if you want to avoid the payday loan trap, you should make sure you’ve looked at all their other options first. Even when you absolutely need some extra cash to make it through the month, there’s almost always a better way of getting it than turning to a payday loan shark. The payday lending industry Payday lending is a big business. The Community Financial Services Association of America (CFSA) boasts more than 20,000 member locations – more than either Starbucks or McDonald’s. About 19 million American households (nearly one out of every six in the country) have taken out a payday loan at some point. How payday loans work Payday loans get their name because they usually come due on the borrower’s next payday. They’re different from regular bank loans in several ways:

Many borrowers can’t break free of this cycle without taking extreme measures. They slash their budgets, borrow from friends and family, pawn their belongings, or take out a different type of loan. These are all steps they could have taken to avoid getting the payday loan in the first place, saving

•Smaller amounts. In most states where payday loans are legal, there’s a limit on how much you can borrow this way. This cap ranges from $300 to $1,000, with $500 being the most common amount. The Pew report says the average size of a payday loan is $375.

and this is due to high incidence rates of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Identifying and being knowledgeable about these risk factors is crucial in preventing and managing kidney disease. Medical professionals can test a patient’s kidney function, blood sugar, urine protein, and blood pressure to help identify kidney disease, according to the National Kidney Foundation. It is important to take charge of your health. Make sure to see a medical professional regularly and understand your personal family history and risks that you may have for any diseases. In addition to this, create a healthy lifestyle for yourself in order to live a longer life. Remember, health is wealth!

(Continued from pg. 13) affect men include skin, prostate, lung, and colon cancers. Prostate cancer affects African American men at a much higher rate than any other group for unknown reasons. It is recommended that African American men get tested for prostate cancer as early as 45 years old. Essentially knowing family history and understanding other risk factors associated with cancer can help to identify any cancer in the body early and save a life. Kidney failure African Americans and Blacks also have extremely high rates of kidney disease

• High interest. When you borrow money from a bank, the interest you pay depends on your credit rating and the type of loan you’re getting. A borrower with excellent credit can get a mortgage loan with an annual percentage rate (APR) of 3 percent or less. By contrast, someone with bad credit taking out an unsecured personal loan would pay 25 percent or more. But payday loans charge all borrowers the same rate – usually around • Shorter terms. reason these loans appeal to financially desperate people. • Automatic repayment. When you take out a payday loan, you hand over a signed check or other document that gives the lender permission to take money out of your bank account. If you don’t show up to repay your loan as scheduled, the lender either cashes the check or withdraws the money from your account. • Easy renewals. If you know you can’t afford to pay off your loan on time, you can come in before it comes due and renew it. You pay a fee equal to the interest you owe and give yourself another two weeks to pay back your loan – with another interest payment. Or, in states where that’s not allowed, you can immediately take out a second loan to cover what you owe on the first one. That’s how so many users end up taking months to pay what started out as a twoweek loan. Next Week Part II: Who uses payday loans and their dangers

UR HISTORY

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

Father Augustus Tolton, the first Black American Roman Catholic priest, is expected to become the first Black American saint Father Augustus Tolton, the Roman Catholic Church’s first Black priest, who is slated to become the church’s first Black saint, was forced to attend seminary in Rome because no American school would admit him because of his race, despite his intellect, special abilities (he spoke several languages) and his devotion to the church. Tolton, a former slave from Missouri, attended seminary at The Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide. He arrived in Rome on March 21, 1880. Church officials ordained him as a priest on Holy Saturday, April 24, 1885, at Basilica St. Lateran Church in Rome. Tolton lived in Rome for six years as one of 70 seminarians who attended the school and had come from different parts of the world. The other seminarians called him Gus, for U.S. What they didn’t call him was the “N-Word” or go out of their way to make him feel uncomfortable or unwanted, according to his biography.

In his free time, he walked around the neighborhoods of the “Eternal City”, sketching more than 600 churches and the city’s architecture in his artist’s notebook. Tolton’s career will soon make another dramatic turn. On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, Pope Francis approved a decree recognizing Tolton’s “heroic virtues,” which is a step in the process toward sainthood, following a fiveyear investigation by the church, which began in 2010 when Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George announced Tolton’s cause for canonization. Pope Francis made Tolton venerable within the church, which is two steps away from canonization. On November 4, 2011, Chicago dedicated “Honorary Father Augustus Tolton Street.”The honorary street sign is located at the corners of 41st Street between State Street and Michigan Avenue. Other events honoring Father Tolton also have taken place throughout Chicago, where he founded in 1889 the parish of St. Monica at

36th and Dearborn Streets for Black Catholics. He was parish priest until his death in 1897 from heatstroke. Father Tolton was only 43. Born into slavery Tolton’s historical journey began on a small plantation in 1854 in Monroe County, Missouri, where slaveholders that owned his family baptized him a Catholic. In a dangerous escape to the Underground Railroad city of Quincy, IL, from

Missouri, his mother led the family to freedom. Confederate soldiers shot at the family, but no one was wounded. His father escaped slavery – and probably underwrote the family’s successful escape. He was a member of the Colored Infantry in the Union Army. He reportedly died in a prison camp in Arkansas, according to The Catholic Telegraph, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. After ordination, Father Tolton believed he would be assigned to a parish in Africa because of racism which was sewn deeply into America’s fabric. Catholic leaders, however, had other plans. They sent him to U.S. Roman Catholic authorities believed it was time America lived up to its self-image as an enlightened, “Christian nation.”He was assigned to St. Peter Church in Quincy, Illinois, where he had grown up after escaping slavery. When he first arrived in America, however, he gave his first Mass on American soil at St. Benedict the Moor

Church before a majority Black congregation in New York City. It was the first time congregants had seen a Black Catholic priest. Many parishioners traveled from other towns and other states to see and hear him. In Quincy, it was a different story. The new pastor of St. Boniface Church referred to Tolton as that “nigger priest.” The Catholic Church discouraged Blacks from attending Mass. In Chicago, priests in white parishes often called Blacks “niggers” and told them they weren’t welcome to pray to God among the white Christian worshippers. Blacks were so poor that it was heartbreaking. They attended Mass to keep warm because they did not have shoes or adequate clothing. After three years in Quincy, the Roman Catholic Church reassigned Father Tolton to Chicago. A parade welcomed him to the city. Now the church has opened the door to his sainthood.
