The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Total forgiveness: Forgiving self (Conclusion)

This writer served as the final conference presenter during the Spiritual Enrichment Women’s Retreat in May 2018 sponsored by the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Milwaukee. The topic was: “The Journey to Self-Forgiveness” intended to encourage participants to forgive themselves. Self-forgiveness has been described as the neglected step-child of the forgiveness literature (Hall & Fincham, 2005). Studies of forgiving oneself are fewer and less sophisticated than studies of forgiving others, and no consensus exists among scholars regarding a single theoretical definition of self-forgiveness. What is self-forgiveness? One of the earliest definitions of self-forgiveness is

a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of one’s own acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself. Who is self-forgiveness for? Everyone. Most people have experienced times when they simply messed up and hurt someone and they know it— know it all too well. Why? (1) God has forgiven you! (2) it is good for your health! and (3) we have no right to take the role of judge and pronounce the death sentence on ourselves. That is pride to think we can hear God’s verdict of, “I forgive you,” and refuse it. We refuse it and set ourselves up as the new judge and pronounce a death sentence over ourselves. The biblical problem

with that is an arrogant failure to trust in the forgiveness of God. Four stages of self-forgiveness 1. Responsibility - Taking responsibility gives us an awareness that we have hurt another person and accept the responsibility necessary for our actions. 2. Remorse – is characterized by a variety of offense related negative emotions (such as guilt and shame, blame, self-condemnation). 3. Restoration - If it is possible, restoration allows for the opportunity to make amends with the individuals we have hurt. 4. Renewal - This stage allows the offender to genuinely forgive themselves for their past transgressions and engage in more positive and

meaningful behaviors such as self-compassion, acceptance, self-kindness, and respect for oneself, etc.1

Scholarships for class of 2018 exceed $86 million Milwaukee Public Schools announced Thursday another record-breaking amount of scholarship dollars earned by students. The Class of 2018 received an eye-popping total of $86,247,467* in scholarship offers, shattering last year's record of $64 million. This is the sixth straight year, dating back to 2012 ($18 million total), that scholarship offers have increased. This year's class saw nearly 900 students receiving scholarships; that number has increased by more than 200 since 2015. Scholarship dollars for African American students doubled this year. "Congratulations to the Class of 2018 for breaking the record for scholarships earned. Hard work and determination allowed our scholarship winners to accomplish this impressive feat. We know our students could not have achieved this result without the support of their parents, families, school counselors, teachers and administrators," said Dr. Keith Posley, Interim Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools."We always have more work to do to close the achievement gap here in Milwaukee, but something so tangible, and this shows

real progress," Posley said. "This type of work is vital to the success of Milwaukee's future workforce. Growing scholarships and better preparing all students for success in college, career and life is critical to the future of our city." During the 2017-18 school

year, 20 College and Career Centers were established in MPS high schools. These centers are a free resource for students in grades 6-12 and are a critical component in helping students acquire scholarships. In the first year alone, the centers received more than 40,000 visits and

served more than 10,000 students. Additionally, school counselors across the district have strategically implemented new strategies to support students. The Class of 2018 is the second senior class to participate in GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readi-

ness for Undergraduate Programs). The TEAM GEAR UP grant, a seven-year federal grant worth more than $28 million (including match dollars), is in place at eight MPS high schools: Audubon, Bay View, Bradley Tech, Hamilton, Madison, Marshall, MHSA and Vincent. Through TEAM GEAR UP, MPS has built strong partnerships with Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Select MPS College and Career Centers will be open during the summer. For more information, visit the MPS website.

Ten staggering stats show how mental health care fails people of color Nearly one in five American adults will deal with a mental health issue in a given year. While research and advocacy have come a long way when it comes to mental health, there’s still one area that is highly under-addressed: How mental illness affects people of color. There has been some progress in recent years when it comes to giving minority mental health a public platform. Celebrities like Kerry Washington, Demi Lovato and Wayne Brady have shared their own experiences with mental health issues and stressed the importance of seeking treatment. New York Jets player Brandon Marshall is also generating awareness through his mental health initiative Project 375, with plans to promote the project as the NFL season starts this fall. But there’s still a long way to go. Ongoing stigma and lack of access to health care act as barriers for anyone with a mental health condition, but experts argue there’s a particular disparity when it comes to minorities. And that can contribute to people not receiving proper support or treatment in order to feel

better. A new study published in the International Journal of Health Services only further corroborates this fact. Researchers found that black and Hispanic young people were less able to get mental health services than white children and young adults. This happens despite the fact that rates of mental illness are generally consistent across all ethnicities, Kaiser Health News reported. Unfortunately, this new study is just one example of a barrier people of color face when it comes to mental health. We gathered just a few staggering statistics that put it all into perspective. Check out the following:

20 percent The percentage by which African American adults are more likely to experience mental health issues than the rest of the population. 40 percent The percentage of Native Americans who die by suicide that are between the ages of 15 to 24 who die by suicide. Native Americans have the highest rate of young adult suicide of any ethnicity. 10.3 percent The number of Hispanic men out of every 100,000 who died by suicide in 2014, a figure that has remained consistent since 1999 with no sign of improving. 27.4 percent The number of Native

American and Alaska Native men out of every 100,000 who died by suicide in 2014. This rate increased by 38 percent from 1999. 8.6 percent The percentage of Asian American adults who sought mental health treatment in 2010. Nearly 18 percent of the general population nationwide reached out for services in the same year. 89 percent The percent increase in the suicides of Native American and Alaska Native women from 1999 to 2014. The rate of suicide among Native American and Alaska Native women is approximately nine of every 100,000 people, up from five per every 100,000 people. 62 percent The percent of non-Hispanic black individuals with depression who had a major depressive episode in 2012. Despite the fact that this figure represents the majority of black individuals with depression, only a small percentage see a mental health professional to help manage their condition. 2.3 percent The percentage of black or Hispanic young people who

saw a mental health specialist in a given year, compared with 5.7 percent of white children and young adults. It’s estimated that one in five people ages 13 to 18 have or will have a mental illness at some point in their life. 25 percent The percentage of African Americans who seek treatment for a mental health issue, compared to 40 percent of white individuals. The reasons for this dropoff include misdiagnosis by doctors, socioeconomic factors and a lack of African American mental health professionals. 90 percent The percent of all suicides in which mental illness plays a role. Remember: Mental illness is not a character flaw. It’s not something a person can just simply “get over.” It’s not a person’s fault. Mental health issues can be anything from dealing with particularly stressful periods to something more serious like depression or schizophrenia. If you’re struggling with your mental health, look into treatment options ― because everyone should be able to live a happy and healthy life.

Spotlight on Small Business

Getting to know our small, independent community businesses Diamond Discs International celebrates grand-opening of world headquarters Diamond Discs International hosted the grand opening of their new global headquarters located at 9300 W. Heather Ave., in Milwaukee. Ugo Nwagbaraocha (top photo right), President of Diamond Discs International, spoke about celebrating its expansion and investment in the local community. Diamond Discs' demonstrated growth and expansion has led to the firm’s capacity for consideration as a prime supplier of construction tools and equipment to major construction projects, both locally and nationally. The new state-of-the-art facility provides workforce training technology, expanded warehouse and light assembly logistics. Diamond Discs plans to create 20 -30 new local employment opportunities in the upcoming two to three years. "The humble success I have achieved is based firmly on the role models demonstrated by my parents who emigrated to Milwaukee over 50 years ago from Nigeria. Even in the 1960’s my parents (pictured lower photo) had a global perspective and understood the value of the City of Milwaukee - a city of values, hard working town, employment opportunities and great place to raise a family." Mr. Nwagbaraocha continued, "It is important for me to provide the same positive role models, demonstrate the importance of education and work ethic, value of family, creation of employment opportunities, for our new generations and less advantaged." Diamond Discs International, established in 1999, is a First-In Class wholesaler and distributor of construction tools, safety equipment and an industry leading producer of professional grade diamond blades, core bits, power gas saws, hand held power tools and safety equipment (safety cones, safety barrels, safety barricades, etc.). Diamond Discs International has the largest local inventory of diamond-edged cutting tools in a fully stocked warehouse. Diamond Discs International is a 100 percent minority owned company and certified as MBE, DBE, 8a.

"Let’s change the narrative, and redefine the vision of what diverse business excellence looks like in the City of Milwaukee. Let’s work together and change the definition of Black on Black to refer to black businesses working with each other achieving long term success," Ugo Nwagbaraocha said.

Avoiding freelance financial pitfalls: Nine tips for side gig success

Is this client notoriously or historically difficult to work with? Do I have time for this project based on my current workload or can I push this out to a later date? Am I compromising on my rates or budget? Be selective to keep your sanity, reputation, and productivity intact. And keep marketing your services so your pipeline is full and you don’t feel the need to take on every client. 4. Plan for slow seasons The best time to find new clients is when you’re busy. You can always say no, but the worst time to find new clients is when you NEED more work. At that point, it’s a little too late—you’re desperate and will likely find yourself spending more money than you’re bringing in. 5. That percentage should be a crucial aspect of your personal finances and should grow commensurate to your success. 2. Know the numbers Evaluate your revenue and expenses. No freelance ‘work’ is really worth doing if you’re losing money on it. 3. Don’t be afraid to turn away clients Many new freelancers think they need to take any and every paying job that comes across their desk or even take jobs that don’t pay or underpay. I’ve been moonlighting as a graphic and web designer for more than 15 years, and turning away clients has been the most important decision I’ve made. You’ll want to carefully consider the following when deciding to take on a new project or client: Is this a project or cause I’m passionate about?

rarely meet face-to-face with my clients after the the initial consult, if at all. Working remotely meant that I often had to wait weeks for a check to arrive by mail to get paid.

CA LE N D

Working at Moonlighting, I not only get to help freelancers connect with employers and grow their businesses, I’ve lived moonlighting first-hand as I built my own freelance graphic design business. I’ve seen and experienced what our users encounter every day. And I’ve learned how to overcome some of the toughest obstacles facing freelancers today. To help you avoid the most common pitfalls, here are 9 top tips based on my own freelancing experience. The recommendations below helped me get through difficult situations, grow my clientele, and become a better freelancer. 1. Pay yourself first When I was growing up, my grandfather always said “pay yourself first,” but it wasn’t until I ran my own business that I understood what that truly meant. As you’re launching or running a business, no matter the size, you’ll have a lot of expenses associated with it. The problem many business owners run into is that it can be a major drain on your personal finances to get something, or keep something, going. In the short term, this can be necessary, but if you don’t habitually “pay yourself,” then you’ll never make money. Don’t lose sight of the true intention—to make money. Always take 10 percent

making some extra cash on the side for something I loved to do). However, since I was also working for a business that operated during normal business hours, I would often get last-minute questions or requests that were time-sensitive. Loyal to my company and completely focused on my work at hand, I didn’t actively check my email or answer my cell during the day. What should you do when you’re on the company clock and a client needs your help? Addressing the issue directly with my client helped set clear expectations for communication and available work hours. After that, my client knew to email me in advance with any requests or call after work hours, which, since we didn’t have to play phone tag, worked out better for both of us.
