On Saturday, June 1, 2019, Crossing Jordan Ministries along with Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield presented "My Health Matters: Dancing For My Health," at Crossing Jordan Ministries Church, 606 W. Concordia Ave. The theme for the event was "Working Towards My Future Health and Job Fair: Mind, Body & Soul." The event featured booths about a number of local health agencies, community programs and services. There was healthy food and drinks and of course, plenty of dance performances and demonstrations. Pictured at the event are (from left) Project Return Case Manager/FSET Outreach Coordinator Eugene Nelson; Home Depot's Cherese Jennings; Voice of the Fatherless Child Founder and CEO Monte Mabra; Anthem Community Outreach Manager Wendy Collins; and Crossing Jordan Ministries Pastor Rodney Cunningham.

In the playoffs, Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee to a breezy sweep of the Detroit Pistons in the first round and a five-game thumping of the Boston Celtics in the conference semifinals. After claiming a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Raptors in the conference finals, the Bucks lost four straight games in stunning fashion. This season, his first under Coach Mike Budenholzer, Antetokounmpo led the Eastern Conference in allstar votes, guided the Bucks to their most regular season victories since 1980-81 and delivered the franchise’s first playoff series win since 2001. “I’m extremely blessed,” Antetokounmpo said. “I want to thank my teammates. It takes more than one person to win 60 games. I want to thank the coaching staff, front office and ownership for believing in me when I was 18 years old back in Greece. They allowed me to lead this team, trusted me.” If Antetokounmpo began that journey as a shy and foul-happy teenager who famously had never tasted a smoothie, he has become a fearsome and versatile

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo wins NBA MVP Award During the 2013 NBA draft, analyst Fran Fraschilla introduced Giannis Antetokounmpo, a raw and relatively unknown 18-yearold from Greece, as the evening’s “most mysterious” prospect. Six years later, the Milwaukee Bucks forward earned a significantly more prestigious superlative: Most Valuable Player (MVP). The NBA announced Monday, June 24, 2019, that Antetokounmpo had claimed MVP honors by beating out Houston Rockets' guard James Harden and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George. The league made the announcement at its annual awards show, held at the Barker Hangar. Antetokounmpo, 24, averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists — all career highs — while leading Milwaukee to a league-best 60 regular season wins. His first MVP award marked another step in a steady ascent for the three-time all-star, who was named first-team all-NBA and all-defense last month. Antetokounmpo became the first Bucks player to be named MVP since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 197374, and he dedicated the honor to his family and his father, Charles, who died in 2017. Antetokounmpo’s step-bystep advance continued from there: He became a full-time starter in 2014-15, a lead scoring option in 2015-16, the NBA’s most improved play-

a

presence who dunks like Shaquille O’Neal, runs the break like LeBron James and leads quietly like Tim Duncan. “We are beyond proud of Giannis,” Bucks General Manager Jon Horst said in a statement. “Giannis propelled the Bucks to great heights last season with his leadership, drive and unselfish play. His grace on and off the court has made him one of the most admired players in the world.” The sixth-year pro was the central force of Milwaukee’s third-ranked offense, driving hard to the basket to set up his teammates’ outside shots, and the linchpin of its topranked defense. Antetokounmpo was also one of three finalists for defensive player of the year, an award claimed by Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert.

onto Antetokounmpo in the defining adjustment of the series. “As my dad told me, always want more, but never be greedy,” Antetokounmpo said. “My goal is to win a championship, and we’re going to do whatever we can to make that happen.” A celebration of Giannis MVP win is slated for July 14, 2019 at Deer District Plaza.

Being Frank Reality television is almost as old as TV itself. One of the first modern reality shows was The Real World on MTV. If you look at television in 2019 much of the programming is reality TV shows. You have shows that range from the lives of housewives to bootleggers running illegal booze. Many people watch these shows to see how other people are living. In truth the only reality show that should matter to anyone is the one they star in everyday. It may be fun to watch how a pawnbroker swindles an old lady or watch some bounty hunter chase a felon. What is more entertaining is living and enjoying your life, creating your own reality show. I do not mean with cameras and a producer, but living your life for you. Many people spend a lot of time looking at other people’s lives and not paying any attention to their own. This is one reason many people seek an outlet for their miserable lives through TV or drugs

Your reality show

and alcohol. Honestly ask yourself, “What do I have in common with the people in this reality show?” Better yet, “How is this enhancing my life?” If you find yourself racing home to see how someone else is living then you may need to check yourself. Is your life so boring that you have to invest your time and energy to see how someone else is living? Reality TV is usually a show about plain everyday people, so why are you looking up to them? One of the craziest shows I saw advertised was about some bootleggers in Tennes-

CHILD WATCH

see. Why would someone in Milwaukee or even Kalamazoo care about a hillbilly making illegal booze? In the movie Harrison Bergeron TV was designed to keep people dumbed down. One of the shows depicted in the movie was a guy talking to a plumber similar to a 2019 reality TV show. This was dummy TV for a society that wore bands on their heads to prevent them from thinking and focusing. Last I checked people in the USA were not wearing thought-preventing bands on their heads, so why are they so obsessed with dummy

TV? It is simple; people are giving their lives away. Many people have accepted the situations they have created for themselves and see no way out. People would rather spend time watching how high-priced harlots live than to live their life. The lack of imagination that is permeating society makes it easy to keep the masses mentally occupied. A reality show doesn’t take much imagination to create, just some cameras and a person to follow. Reality TV also helps the miserable masses accept their plight by showing others who are in similar conditions. Misery seeks company. The solution is for people to cut off the TV show and look at their reality. No one is too far-gone to make some sort of change. A change in thought is one of the most powerful things a person can do. If a person spends more time focusing on their life, positive results will follow. The same goes for the sports fanatic who lives their life

through sport heroes they may never meet. Channel your energy into thoughts and actions that make your life more pleasurable. Your energy and thoughts are invaluable, so why give either away cheaply? Your life is your reality show. Will you take the time to create a show that you enjoy? Or will you choose to keep living through some other person’s life on TV while dropping Valiums and drinking vodka? Much more than summer school

Close your eyes and think about the words 'summer school.' What comes to mind? If you picture a room full of children clapping, cheering, laughing and falling in love with reading you could be imagining the experience thousands of children across the country are about to have as they participate in the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program. More than 1,400 college-aged servant leader interns, site coordinators and partners came together this week for National Training at historic CDF Alex Haley Farm in Clinton, Tennessee to learn how to teach the “Freedom Schools way,” strategies for productive classroom management, and everything in between so they’ll be ready to lead the six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program for more than 12,000 K-12 scholars this summer. The program’s roots are in the Mississippi Freedom Summer project of 1964, but 55 years later its mission is as urgent as ever. Today data show the majority of public school students cannot read or compute at grade level and poor children and children of color are still particularly behind. Hostile school environments and exclusion-

www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

ary discipline policies disproportionately deny children of color and children with disabilities opportunities for success and contribute to their risk of entering the school-to-prison pipeline. Everyone today should ask the Department of Education why they are seeking to halt or reverse some efforts to create a level education playing field for all children. Freedom Schools fills a gap created by an unequal and unjust system. The program stops summer learning loss using wonderful books that allow our scholars to read about their true history and see themselves in a range of age-appropriate culturally diverse books selected by a distinguished committee of children’s book writers, illustrators, historians, and edu-

cators. The CDF Freedom Schools program is designed to serve children and youth in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is limited, too expensive, or non-existent. By partnering with schools, faith and community-based organizations, municipalities, colleges and universities, and juvenile detention facilities, the program is offered in these communities at no cost to low-income families who enroll their children. The model and the excellent, carefully-chosen books used in the multicultural Integrated Reading Curriculum are all designed to empower children to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, coun-

try and world with hope, education and action. The CDF Freedom Schools program is also a servant leadership incubator for two generations— the children served and the college-aged servant leader interns who teach and serve them. The teachers’ energy and enthusiasm during National Training is infectious and they carry that joy back to their classrooms throughout the summer and beyond. I am proud that many of our servant leader interns have gone on to become committed teachers, counselors, and school administrators. We are especially eager to create a pipeline of desperately needed Black and Latino male teachers for our nation’s public schools. Not only do many servant leader interns fall in love with teaching during Freedom Schools, they also report back that they are now inspiring the next generation of teachers: “I had an activity where my scholars had to list what they wanted to be when they got older. [One student] couldn’t write down an answer. By the end of Freedom Schools when I did the activity again, she wrote down that she wanted to become a servant leader intern and a teacher. This impacted me because I

know that I have impacted her life.” “One of my scholars keeps asking me what she can do to become a Freedom Schools intern, and that makes my heart so happy. She says she can’t imagine a summer without Freedom Schools in it, and honestly, neither can I.” “I found my voice in Freedom Schools. I found my 'why'. Freedom Schools is built in me. It’s part of who I am.” We will send this year’s young servant leader teachers—like the thousands we have trained before them— out to educate and empower the next generation and spend their lives committed to service for our nation’s children. They will lead us forward and deliver on our promise to create a level playing field for all children. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month (Conclusion) June is celebrated as National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month. The history of National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month is unclear; what is clear is that this observance has been occurring since 1991 to promote the growing and grilling season. This column has highlighted this month the advantages of eating fresh fruits and vegetables and has encouraged you to bump up fruits and vegetables on your plate. In this final installment, we will look at healthy eating for preschoolers and young children. The foods and drinks your preschooler has throughout the day are important for his or her health. Fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy are a part of a healthy eating style and together provide the nutrients their bodies need. Limit the amount of added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat in your preschooler’s meals, drinks, and snacks. The

USDA recommends: Fruits - Focus on whole fruits. Serve a rainbow of choices. Choose from fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits. Purchase canned fruit in water or 100 percent fruit juice instead of syrup. Limit fruit juice. While 100 percent fruit juice can be part of a healthy diet, it does not contain the dietary fiber found in other forms of fruit. Offer raisins or other unsweetened dried fruit instead of chewy fruit snacks or strips, which usually contain very little fruit. Vegetables - Serve a variety of colorful choices. Brighten children’s plates with red, orange, and darkgreen vegetables. Choose from fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables. Prepare and serve vegetables without added salt or solid fat. Grains - Make half your grains whole grains. Make at least half their grains whole grains by offering 100 percent whole-grain cereals,

Combine low-fat or fat-free yogurt with bananas and cocoa powder for a smoothie, or try milk, ice cubes, and frozen berries. Beloved, the USDA notes that everything we eat and drink matters. The right mix can help you be healthier now and into the future! General Disclaimed: The writer has used her best efforts in preparation of this information. *U.S. Department of Agriculture Choose MyPlate.gov breads, and pasta. Vary the choices for whole grains. Rolled oats, oatmeal, brown rice, wild rice, buckwheat, quinoa, wheat berries, and millet are whole-grain foods. Protein - Choose a variety of protein foods such as seafood, beans, lean meats, poultry, and eggs. Limit highly processed poultry, fish, or meat (like hotdogs, chicken nuggets, and fish sticks).

Even some “reduced-fat” meats and cold cuts, like sausage, bologna, and salami, may be high in saturated fat and sodium. Dairy - Move to low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt. Serve unflavored, fat-free, and lowfat milks most often. They have less added sugar and fewer calories than flavored, whole, or reduced-fat milk. Blend dairy into smoothies.

COMMUNITY COLUMN Stories from new UW-Milwaukee graduates inspire us all By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee As summer gets underway, we are so proud of all the graduates from around our city. Whether someone is graduating from kindergarten, eighth grade, high school or college, these are important and life-changing accomplishments. Just last month, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held its 120th Commencement ceremony. More than 3,500 students were eligible to graduate and walk across the stage at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. This is where we hear some of the year’s most inspiring and diverse stories, and like the students who share them, these stories have origins in our community and from around the world. UWM enrolls students from 92 countries, and more than a third of our students are people of color. Our long history as a diverse and welcoming campus is a unique and valuable benefit to our students – and one of UWM’s greatest strengths. We are proud to play such a crucial role in the personal journeys of our students, and I’ll share just a few of the many stories from our May graduating class. Tre’quan Martin finished high school a year early with a $100,000 scholarship to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta. After overextending himself with extracurriculars, he narrowly missed the required grade point average to maintain his scholarship. He returned home to Milwaukee, where he discovered a new home at UWM.

Chancellor Mark Mone shares the success stories of some recent UWM graduates. In 2018, Mercedes and another student traveled to China to represent UWM and claim first place in the Shanghai International

Along the way, he connected with Milwaukee Public Schools to advise its students on scholarships and admissions and serve as a role model. After finishing his first degree at UWM, he earned a master’s degree in administrative leadership in adult, continuing and higher education administration. He plans to continue advising students to show them how much they can achieve. Mercedes Islas learned she was pregnant after getting accepted to UWM’s College of Nursing. UWM set up a virtual classroom to help her stay on top of her studies after her daughter was born. Another professor allowed her to bring her newborn to class.

Nursing Skills Competition. Mercedes remembers seeing her mother graduate college and hopes to serve as a similar role model for her two

daughters, not only by receiving her bachelor’s degree, but also by planning to continue her studies at UWM and earn a doctorate degree. Alvaro De León González was born in San Jose, California, and moved to Mexico when he was 8 years old. In Mexico, he studied at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes and decided to transfer his credits to UWM to finish his civil engineering degree. Alvaro chose to study at UWM because of the university’s high level of engagement with state and local organizations. In 2018, Alvaro landed a full-time position with Milwaukee’s city government as an engineering drafting technician. UWM gave him valuable opportunities to network and connect with

the Milwaukee community, and Alvaro made the most of them. Tre’quan, Mercedes and Alvaro are just a few examples of the diverse and inspiring individuals who graduate from UWM and go on to make a difference in the lives of others. They are the faces of the future, and they show just how powerful earning a college degree can be. Please visit us and learn about what your paths to success can be. If you take a campus tour from now through Sept. 12, you will receive free tickets to a Milwaukee Brewers game, Summerfest, State Fair or Mexican Fiesta. Visit uwm.edu/ summervisit to schedule your tour today.

How payday loans work – biggest dangers and 14 better alternatives (part 2) Part II: Who uses payday loans and what are their dangers? According to a survey by Bankrate, roughly 25 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The money they make just barely covers their day-to-day expenses, with little or nothing left over for emergencies. If you’re in this situation, any unplanned expense – such as a $300 car repair – can cause a financial crisis. Who uses payday loans and why According to the 2012 Pew report, 12 million Americans take out payday loans each year. About 5.5 percent of all American adults have used one within the past five years. The people most likely to use payday loans are: • Young(ish). More than half of all payday loan users are between 25 and 44 years old. About 9 percent of people in their 20s, and 7 percent to 8 percent of people in their 30s, have used this type of loan in the last five years. By contrast, people over 60 years old are unlikely to use payday loans. About 24 percent of all Americans are 60 or older, but only 11 percent of payday borrowers are. • African American. Most payday borrowers are white, but that’s because white people are such a large group. African Americans, who make up only 12 percent of the population, take out nearly a quarter of all payday loans. Roughly 1 in 8 African American adults have used a payday loan in the past five years, compared to only 1 in 25 white adults. • Low-income. The median household income in the country was $53,657 in 2014, according to the Census Bureau. However, most payday loan users have income well below this level. More than 70 percent have a household income of less than $40,000. People in this group are three times as likely to use payday loans as people with incomes of $50,000 or more. • Renters. People who rent are much more likely to use payday loans than people who own their homes. About 35 percent of American adults are renters, but 58 percent of payday borrowers are. About 1 out of 10 renters has used a payday loan in the past year. • Relatively uneducated or undereducated. More than half of all payday loan users have no education beyond high school. Less than 15 percent of them have a four-year college degree. • Unemployed or disabled. Payday lenders are perfectly happy to borrow against your unemployment or disability benefits. About 1 in 10 unemployed Americans has used a payday loan in the past five years – although they may have been employed when they took out the loan. Disabled peo-

ple use payday loans at an even higher rate. Roughly 12 percent have used one in the last five years. • Separated or divorced. Only about 13 percent of American adults are separated or divorced. However, this group makes up 25 percent of all payday loan users. About 13 percent of separated and divorced adults have taken out a payday loan in the last five years. Payday lenders often market their products as shortterm fixes for emergency needs, such as car repairs or medical bills. But according to the Pew survey, most users don’t use them that way. Nearly 70 percent of firsttime borrowers say they took out their loans to help pay for basic needs, such as rent, food, utilities, or credit card bills. Only 16 percent say they borrowed the money for an unplanned, one-time expense. When Pew asked people what they would do if they couldn’t use payday loans, they gave a variety of answers. More than 80 percent said they would cut back on basic expenses, such as food and clothing. More than half also said they would pawn something or borrow from friends and family. However, most users did not say they

An NCON Communications Publication

would use credit cards or take out bank loans – possibly because many don’t have good enough credit to qualify. Dangers of payday loans The most obvious problem with payday loans is their extremely high interest rates. The fee for a payday loan can be anywhere from $10 to $30 per $100 borrowed, which works out to an annual interest rate of 261 percent to 782 percent. But these loans also have other dangers that are less obvious. These dangers include: • Renewal fees. When borrowers can’t pay back a payday loan on time, they either renew the loan or take out a new one. So even though they keep making payments on their loans, the amount they owe never gets any smaller. A borrower who starts out with a $400 loan and a $60 interest payment and then keeps renewing the loan every two weeks for four months will end up paying about $480 in interest – and will still owe the original $400. • Collections. In theory, a payday lender should never have any problem collecting a debt, because it can take the money right out of your checking account. The problem is, if that account is empty, the lender gets noth-

ing – and you get socked with a hefty bank fee. But the lender usually won’t stop with one attempt. It keeps trying to collect the money, often breaking up the payment into smaller amounts that are more likely to go through. And, at the same time, the lender starts harassing you with calls and letters from lawyers. If none of that works, the lender will probably sell your debt to a collections agency for pennies on the dollar. This agency, in addition to calling and writing, can sue you for the debt. If it wins, the court can allow the agency to seize your assets or garnish your wages. • Credit impacts. Payday lenders generally don’t check your credit before issuing you a loan. For such small loans at such short terms, it’s just too expensive to run a credit check on each one. However, if you fail to pay back your loan, the credit bureaus can still find out about it. Even if the payday lender doesn’t re-

port it, the collections agency that buys it often will, damaging your credit score. Yet if you do pay back the loan on time, that payment probably won’t be reported to the credit bureaus, so your credit score won’t improve. • The cycle of debt. The biggest problem with payday loans is that you can’t pay them off gradually, like a mortgage or a car loan. You have to come up with the whole sum, interest and principal, in just two weeks. For most borrowers, a lump sum this size is more than their budget can possibly handle – so they just renew their loans or take out new ones. According to the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, roughly four out of five payday loans end up being renewed or rolled over to a new loan. Next Week Part III: Laws about payday lending.

Public Notification of Completion of a National Research Study Conducted in Milwaukee County The IMMEDIATE Trial, studying the effect of intravenous glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK) versus intravenous glucose placebo (an inactive substance) in patients with a suspected lack of blood supply to the heart, given in the out-of-hospital setting by emergency medical services (EMS), has been completed in Milwaukee County. About the research This study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and took place between December 2006 and July 2008. Researchers and physicians studied a total of 911 patients treated by 36 EMS agencies located in 13 US cities and metropolitan areas. Milwaukee County was one of the study sites where Milwaukee County EMS and the Medical College of Wisconsin performed this research. Of the 911 patients enrolled nationwide, 59 were enrolled in Milwaukee County between February 2007 and July 2008. The average age of patients in this group was 62 years. 43 patients were male (73%) and 16 were female (27%). 36 patients were Caucasian (61%), 20 were African American (34%), 1 was Native American (2%), and 2 were unreported race (3%). 1 patient was Hispanic (2%). Study results Among patients with a suspected lack of blood supply to the heart, out-of-hospital treatment with intravenous glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK), compared with glucose placebo, did not reduce progression to a heart attack or improve 30-day survival. Out-of-hospital treatment with intravenous glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK) was associated with lower rates of the combined outcome of either in-hospital death or out-of-hospital or in-hospital cardiac arrest (a condition where the heart does not pump blood). The information gathered in this trial will help us develop the best treatments to improve outcomes for patients suffering a suspected lack of blood supply to the heart. For additional Information, please contact Dr. Tom Aufderheide by phone at (414) 805-6493 or by email at RRC@mcw.edu. An NCON Communications Publication
