African American Breastfeeding Network celebrates 10th Anniversary

On Saturday, June 23, 2018, The African American Breastfeeding Network (AABN), along with 15 sponsoring organizations and more than 100 guests, joined together at the Wisconsin African American Women's Center, 3020 West Vliet St., to commemorate 10 years of service to the community. Formed in 2008, the organization was founded by concerned community residents due to disparities and breastfeeding inequalities. Over the last 10 years the organization has gained national recognition by the Centers for Disease Control and Preventive (CDC) for its Community Breastfeeding Gatherings, monthly educational sessions for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their families. Highlights of the event were video, poetry, comedy, and award presentations to Robert and Jolie Brox as Family of the Year.

The Milwaukee Brewers honor the life of Davey "Nellie" Nelson On Saturday, June 23, 2018, The Milwaukee Brewers celebrated the life of the late Davey "Nellie" Nelson(inset), who passed away on April 22, 2018, by renaming the FOX Sports Wisconsin stage where Nelson reported pre- and post-game shows as "Nellie's Corner" in his honor. A memorial plaque was placed at the stage to formally rename it.

Nelson was a Major League All-Star infielder for the Indians, Senators, Rangers and Royals in the late 1960s to '70s, as well as an outfield instructor and first base coach for the Brewers in 2001 and 2003; and later a FOX Sports Wisconsin analyst. Also during the recent Brewers-Cardinals series from June 21-24, Brewers players and coaches honored Nelson with a "Nellie" memorial patch on their jersey sleeves, and on June 23, all proceeds from the Brewers Community Foundation 50-50 Raffle benefited Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa, a charity that has always been close to Nelson's heart. American Heart Association recognizes Rep. Evan Goyke with Friend with Heart award The American Heart Association presented Representative Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) with a Friend with Heart award for his support of the American Heart Association’s mission throughout the year, including supporting the Dispatcher-Assisted CPR law, as well as a law that incentivizes FoodShare participants to purchase healthy foods.

Both laws were passed in the last legislative session with full support of the American Heart Association. The dispatcher-assisted CPR law ensures all 911 dispatchers in Wisconsin can give CPR coaching over the phone during a cardiac arrest emergency. Currently, Wisconsin’s bystander CPR rate is around 19 percent, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Ser-

vices, but this new law aims to increase that. Rep. Goyke serves as ranking member of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, which passed this bill last fall, paving the way for its full passage in both houses early this spring.

The FoodShare law creates a pilot program that offers FoodShare participants point-of-sale discounts on fresh produce and other healthy foods. The initial program will include 2,000 FoodShare participants in urban and rural Wisconsin with the hope that it will be expanded to all FoodShare participants as the outcomes are realized.

“I’m passionate about any policy or legislation that can improve the lives of people here in Milwaukee,” said Rep. Goyke. “All of the work that

the American Heart Association does is geared toward one goal: to free this community of heart disease and stroke. I’m proud to accept this honor and continue to support their live-saving work in Milwaukee.”

“We thank Rep. Goyke for

his support on issues like dispatcher-assisted CPR and healthy food access,” said Dr. Sarang Baman, Vice Chair of the American Heart Association’s Wisconsin Advocacy Committee. “To improve the health of our citizens in Milwaukee, we are working on

a wide range of initiatives, from prevention to treatment of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. We appreciate the support of lawmakers like Rep. Goyke who see the value in our work and commitment to the well-being of all Wisconsinites.”

MPS Summer Food Service Program provides nutritious meals to children during the summer Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, Milwaukee Public Schools announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. Free meals will be made available to eligible children 18 years of age and under.

Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.

Joe Jackson, manager of The Jackson 5, has died at age 89 Joseph "Joe" Jackson , the father and the manager of the Jackson family of entertainers, has died, TMZ reported Wednesday, June 27, 2018.

The entertainment news website said Jackson had terminal pancreatic cancer, and a source told TMZ last week he was in end stages of his battle with it. Jackson, who managed The Jackson 5, was 89 years old.

A report in 2015 said Jackson suffered three heart attacks and a stroke after taking a birthday trip to Brazil.

He also suffered a fall after being released from the hospital.

Jackson leaves behind his estranged wife, Katherine Jackson, their eight surviving children, and a host of grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Good stewards - Recycling for sustainability (Week 1)

“God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature. So, they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself…”

- Gen. 1:26 (MSG) God is the owner of all things, God does not need a co-owner. We are called to be managers/stewards of what God has entrusted to us. One of the ways we can be better stewards of God’s creation is by recycling for sustainability.

According to an article authored by the UAF Office of Sustainability, recycling is an important part of a sustainable lifestyle and in preserving the resources used by society. Unfortunately, the vital role of sustainability and recycling today is often misunderstood. Mer-

riam-Webster defines recycling as "to reuse or make (a substance) available for reuse for biological activities through natural processes of biochemical degradation or modification." Although people are familiar with the items that should be recycled and the reason why, understanding sustainability and recycling and the impacts of living consciously are necessary for the process of leading more meaningful and responsible lives as stewards of God’s resources.

Sustainability, according to the U.S. Dept. of Environmental Protection Agency, is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability cre-

ates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment.

Breaking down recycled materials has a big impact on saving energy and preserving our planet. The UAF Office of Sustainability article goes on to say aluminum cans save energy when they are recycled. Plastic, paper, steel, electronics, food and

clothing can also be recycled. Paper, plastic and steel, just like aluminum, can save energy and water and prevents pollutants and water contaminants.

Electronics are recyclable as electronics are broken down to make new electronics. Recycling old electronics means helping prevent contamination from lead, cadmium and other toxic materials and reusing gold, cooper, plastic and metals that would otherwise go wasted. Clothing is recycled when it is donated to organizations for the purpose of giving to others to reuse.

Food can be composted and turned into energy (e.g. reusing cooking oil as fuel for kilns and vehicles as

bio-fuel). Protein scraps can be donated to dog mushers to feed their dogs.

You are invited to join us this entire month as we focus on being good stewards of God’s creation by recycling for sustainability. For the next two weeks, this column will focus on composting.

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM is the doorway for many different paths to success By: Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee There is no one path to finding your future success.

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, we have many open doors that lead to what you want to accomplish in life.

Just last month, more than 3,300 people received a degree from UWM and are now beginning new chapters in their lives, whether starting new jobs, doing research or continuing to graduate school. Along the way, these individuals experienced many unexpected steps and just as many successes. Here are just a few of their remarkable stories.

Sandra Plascencia faced many obstacles on her way to earning a degree in social work from UWM. She was born in a small town in Mexico as the youngest of eight children and didn’t have much financial support; yet she became the first from her family to go to college.

She completed an internship at the Department of Health and Human Services in Waukesha, which solidified her desire to help others through social work. Sandra told us that the path to her dream belonged to many.

“When you’re a first-generation student, this dream… it’s not just mine,” she said.

parents, my siblings, even my grandparents when they were raising my parents.”

Before coming to UWM, Abbey Palmer had a successful career as a massage therapist. A car crash left her unable to continue with the physical demands of that work, and she needed to find a new path. Abbey decided to pursue her love of languages and linguistics, which opened up possibilities that she hadn’t known before.

Over the past two summers, Abbey has traveled to China and Russia, and she has taught English to refugees.

The next steps on her new path lead to the University of Oxford in England to work on a master’s degree. She is both proud and amazed at the direction her life has taken. “I’m going places,” she said, “and I’ve been places just in the past few years that I never thought about as possibilities.”

Ali Bakhshinejad ran a business with his brother in Iran, but he wanted to broaden his world even further. After earning a master’s degree in Iceland, he came to UWM and immersed himself in research and entrepreneurism while earning a doctorate in engineering. He did not know anyone when he came here and wasn’t sure how he would feel.

Ali told us about the incredible acceptance and encouragement he received by being involved in UWM’s Student Startup Challenge and I-Corps program. The experiences helped him pro-

mote his business ideas and research, which could lead to better treatment for brain aneurysms. He is considering several job offers and has found a home in Wisconsin, where he intends to stay.

Sandra, Abbey and Ali are all examples of how life’s sometimes-unexpected chapters can lead to new paths to success. These remarkable individuals are learning, exploring and thinking at greater levels than ever before – and they did it right here in Milwaukee. With their new experiences and education, all three are confidently walking through open doors to their futures. That is the power of getting a college degree.

Calm parents can help calm kids with ADHD Awareness about and diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in minority populations in the United States has increased over the past decade.

The higher numbers diagnosed likely are the result of more widespread attention to signs, symptoms, and diagnosis.

As a result, ADHD has been increasingly recognized among African Americans.

As challenging as it can be to raise a child with ADHD, new research offers biological evidence that calm, positive parenting may help these kids master their own emotions and behaviors.

The study was conducted with parents of preschool children with the developmental disorder. The physiological effects of using compliments and praise instead of yelling and criticizing were almost instant, the researchers found.

“We were surprised at how fast it happened,” said study author Theodore Beauchaine, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University. “We evaluated moms and their kids before the intervention and after the intervention, which took a couple of months. Then we did a one-year follow-up.

“We expected that we may find some of these outcomes at one year, but not at two months, and we found them at two months,” he added.

The study was conducted by monitoring and evaluating

the results of a group of parents and children who were part of a special intervention program.

This program provides separate small-group sessions for parents and children where parents learn how to best respond to their children’s behavior and children learn anger management, emotional awareness, emotion regulation and appropriate social behaviors, the study authors said.

Therapists worked with 99 kids aged 4 to 6 who were diagnosed with hyperactive/ impulsive or combined types of ADHD. Those with only attention issues were excluded from the study.

Beauchaine explained that the children chosen for this study were in the top 2 percent of those who displayed ADHD behavioral issues.

Seventy-six percent were boys.

Often, he noted, these

children have strained relationships with their parents, peers, and teachers.

“We taught parents to use better discipline practices, as these parents tend to be overreactive and sometimes even physical in their discipline practices,” Beauchaine said.

Dr. Alexander Fiks, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, said parents often slip into negative parenting when they are tired or frustrated by their child’s actions.

“Screaming, nasty comments, threats, ultimatums that may be unreasonable, pushing kids away, hitting, getting in their face or holding your child down are all negative parenting techniques,” explained Fiks, who was not involved with the study.

“Most parents know positive parenting when they

see it, which includes praise, flexibility, smiling, hugging, rewards, focusing on privileges, engaging kids in activities where they can succeed, setting achievable goals and making wishes and expectations that are reasonable for the child and developmentally appropriate,” he said.

As parents learned effective problem-solving, adaptive emotional regulation and positive parenting responses, the children began to demonstrate improvements in behavior.

“What this research found was that in these kids, following this intervention, their heart rates slowed down, they were breathing more slowly and they were calmer,” Beauchaine explained.

Fiks said: “It’s interesting to see that when behaviors improve, there can actually be physiologic differences that are noticed in these kids, reflecting that it’s not just the outward behavior, but that there is something fundamental about their physiology that is actually changing concurrently.”

To guarantee that these improvements were the result of the intervention, Beauchaine and his team divided the families into two groups, one that began the program approximately 20

weeks after the first group, and only participated in 10 sessions, half of what the first group received.

The changes in parenting among those in the initial group exceeded the changes among those in the delayed group, as did the changes in the children’s physiology.

Beauchaine hopes this study will help convince parents to begin ADHD treatments earlier.

For preschool children diagnosed with ADHD, primary treatment is not medication, according to Fiks, it’s behavioral therapy and counseling.

“When people see that there are biological changes that go along with an intervention, it increases the status and reduces stigma,” Beauchaine said.

“If people think kids act with impulsivity and hyperactivity because they want to, they will think about those kids a lot differently if they attribute it to something that they can’t help,” he said.

African American Children’s Theatre announces closing After nearly 30 years of providing theatre arts training and performing opportunities to Milwaukee children, the African American Children’s Theatre (AACT) announces the ending of their programming and closing of the classroom at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center.

Constance Clark founded the African American Children’s Theatre in 1989 after children of families affected by gun violence asked “Aunt Connie” to help them create a play as a way to cope with their loss. She soon realized that theatre arts training and performance could be a viable and ongoing project with positive messages and development opportunities for youth and the community.

Since that time, thousands of youth participated in more than 100 performances. AACT focused on musi-

Milwaukee County Department on Aging offers advice for extreme summer heat During the summer months, staying hydrated is more important than ever, especially during heat waves.

The reason for this is simple: Dehydration diminishes your ability to regulate temperature, and thus, your risk of developing a heat illness rises dramatically.

Heat illnesses are of special concern to senior citizens, because older adults are much more affected by summer heat. For instance, from 1999-2009, roughly 40 percent of all heat-related deaths in the U.S. – nearly 3,000 – were adults over 65 years old.

Why are seniors more prone to heat illnesses?

When we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature for a couple of reasons.

Seniors over 65 don’t sweat as much as younger adults, which unfortunately is one of the body’s most important heat-regulation mechanisms. Also, seniors store fat differently, which complicates heat-regulation in the body further.

Why’s this serious? Well, as the temperature rises, so too does your internal body temperature, especially when you’re exposed directly to the sun or extremely hot environments. Which is why seniors suffer from heat stroke more often than younger people throughout the summer.

Why is preventing dehydration important?

Studies have shown that when you feel thirsty – just 2 percent dehydration – your ability to regulate heat begins to decline. For seniors, who already struggle to manage internal heat, dehydration can deter the body’s natural cooling processes even more.

During heat waves, seniors should be drinking water and juices regularly, and a good rule of thumb is to drink fluids at every meal, as well as sipping fluids throughout the day rather than drinking them quickly. Also, avoiding alcohol can encourage better hydration.
