Fessahaye Mebrahtu named new director of Black Catholic And Ethnic Ministries for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Fessahaye Mebrahtu is named the first Director of Black Catholic and Ethnic Ministries for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. He joined the archdiocesan staff at the Mary Mother of the Church Pastoral Center on June 17, 2019. “Only strong people can endure so much trauma, so much struggle, and not only survive and thrive but keep challenging. The mere total struggle, relentless in spite of suffering, to keep struggling for justice is something that the Church should appreciate with Black Catholics,” said

Mebrahtu. An immigrant from Eritrea, Mebrahtu has a unique and personal perspective on ministering to immigrants and ethnic minorities. In his new role, Mebrahtu will begin implementing a pastoral plan for Black Catholics, visiting parishes around the archdiocese, and ministering to the Black, Native American, and Asian communities, focusing on investing in people and developing indigenous leaders. Mebrahtu comments on his own community saying, “from us [Black Catholics],

Fessahaye Mebrahtu

we need to make sure we are here to stay and at the same time we are productive and viable members of the Body of Christ.” Mebrahtu’s most recent pastoral experience was at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, where he served as Chaplain. Mebrahtu believes this role exposed him to “the realities and needs of our correctional institutions from a spiritual and pastoral perspective.” He continues, “It was a spiritual experience God rerouted me to have before come here [to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee].”

Mebrahtu holds several master's degrees and leadership positions. He has served most recently as the Executive Director of the Pan-African Community Association; as the national organizer for the Eritrean Catholics of Ge’Ez Rite of North America; and as Secretary for the National Association of African Catholics in the US (NAACUS). He is a current board member of Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology, Hales Corners.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

July - National Cell Phone Courtesy Month – Week 1 “Visiting a neighbor's home and engaging in congenial conversation is fast becoming a lost art. Polite verbal exchanges once familiar and customary in centuries past have gone the way of electronic surrogates: texting, e-mail and smart phones." (Excerpted from an article by Ty Pelfrey in The Union, Grass Valley, CA, Jan., 2011). While the author of this quote seems to spurn the popularity of cell phones, the fact of the matter is cell phones have offered its users an unknown level of convenience.

ambivalent feelings, especially when cell phone courtesy is slowly becoming a forgotten principle. Today people in public are unexpectedly exposed to one side of a two-party private interaction, which has not only blurred the boundaries between public and private places but has become frustrating. Cell phones have become the norm in our society rather than the exception; therefore, it is proper to highlight cell phone courtesy. July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month. It is an observance Jacqueline Whitmore founded a few years ago with the intent to encourage the increasingly unmindful corps of cell phone users to be more respectful of their surroundings by using some simple cell phone etiquette principles. This topic is timely as there are millions of cell phone users in the United States alone and millions of

Cell phones make it possible for everybody to stay connected and available at anytime and anyplace. Cell phones are needed for personal safety, work, staying in touch with family and friends, etc. Cell phones have become such a part of one’s life that many feel they would be lost without one. However, this feature has posed

cell phones ring irritatingly every day. In fact, many have undoubtedly been in situations where someone nearby was not being so courteous with their cell phone. For example, does this sound familiar: You’re on a train or plane, in an elevator, mall, or restaurant and someone is talking on their cell phone very loudly. You look around because you wonder if you are the only one who is being annoyed by their blatant rudeness. Sometimes you can motion to them to quiet down, but it always seems as if the

person on the phone does not care if they are disturbing others. With the steady rise in cell phone users beginning as young as 4 years old, there are campaigns to encourage more people to employ etiquette when using cell phones. Thus, by request of readers, we will re-run this series this month for that purpose. Next week we will look at some rules for using one’s cell phone at work. In Week 3, we will address cell phones and worship. In the conclusion, we will offer practical tips to take to avoid offending others when using your mobile phone. I hope you will join us this month as we tackle a much-needed topic: Cell Phone Courtesy. "Technology does not trump thoughtfulness. Infringing on the rights of others reflects poorly on you and certainly isn't what wireless technology is about."

Midwest Bible College Graduation 2019 Midwest Bible College (MBC) celebrated another wonderful school year at its 16th graduation on Friday, June 7, 2019. Forty-five students received their Associates, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Biblical Studies. Three of these students completed their studies online. Six additional students will receive their degrees at a special ceremony in Uganda, Africa at the end of June. With the addition of this year’s graduates, a total of 578 students have earned a degree or certificate from Midwest Bible College since 2003. The curriculum taught at MBC is Bible based and developed by the college. Students find it to be a unique, challenging and an intense study of the Bible. Despite the hard work, graduates highly value their time as students. They describe their year at MBC as “encouraging”, “amazing”, “transformative” and “insightful”. Through their studies at MBC, each student not only gains a deeper understanding of the Bible, but is also equipped with the ability to apply it to their daily lives. Our vision is to train students to go back to their churches and to be more effective and to help and to assist you and support you and to be an armor bearer for the Kingdom of God.” Dr. Dorothy Huston, founder and CEO of Technology Management Training Group, from Huntsville, AL, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Huston reminded the students that success is a “do-it-yourself ” project and challenged them to find a way to use what they have

How payday loans work – biggest dangers and 14 better alternatives (part 3) According to a survey by Bankrate, roughly 25 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The money they make just barely covers their day-to-day expenses, with little or nothing left over for emergencies. If you’re in this situation, any unplanned expense – such as a $300 car repair – can cause a financial crisis. Laws about payday lending The laws about payday lending vary from state to state. States fall into three basic groups: • Permissive states. In 28 states, there are very few restrictions on payday lending. Lenders can charge $15 or more for each $100 borrowed, and they can demand payment in full on the borrower’s next payday. However, even these states have some limits. Most of them put a limit on how much money users can borrow – either a dollar amount or a percentage of the borrower’s monthly income. Also, a federal law bars lenders in all states from charging more than a 36 percent annual percentage rate (APR) to active-duty members of the military. Many payday lenders deal with this law by refusing to make loans to service members. • Restrictive states. In 15 states, plus Washington, DC, there are no payday loan offices at all. Some of these states have banned payday lending outright. Others have put a cap on interest

rates – usually around 36 percent APR – that makes payday lending unprofitable, so all the payday loan offices have closed. However, borrowers in these states can still get loans from online payday lenders. • Hybrid states. The remaining eight states have a medium level of regulation. Some cap the interest payday lenders can charge at a lower rate – usually around $10 for each $100 borrowed. This works out to more than 260 percent annual interest based on a two-week term, which is enough for payday lenders to make a profit. Others limit the number of loans each borrower can make in a year. And finally, some states require longer terms for loans than two weeks. For example, Colorado passed a law in 2010 requiring all loans to have a term of at least six months. As a result, most payday lenders in the state now allow borrowers to pay back loans in installments,

rather than as a lump sum. The Pew Report shows that in states with stricter laws, fewer people take out payday loans. That’s partly because stricter laws usually mean fewer payday loan stores, so people can’t just go to the nearest store for fast cash. People in restrictive states still have access to online lenders, but they’re no more likely to use them than people in permissive states. In June 2016, the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau proposed a new rule to regulate payday lending at the national level. This rule would require lenders to check borrowers’ income, expenses, and other debts to make sure they can afford to pay back the loan. It would also limit the number of loans a borrower can take out consecutively, helping to break the cycle of debt. And finally, it would require lenders to let borrowers know before pulling money out of their bank accounts and limit the num-
