Employ Milwaukee to lead Midwest workforce group consortium

Mayor Tom Barrett (back row, center) joins with Employ Milwaukee and other representatives from various organizations in the Midwest that make up the new regional workforce consortium.

Employ Milwaukee will lead a new group of Midwestern workforce investment boards that aims to address workforce issues in urban areas in 12 different cities through collaboration and sharing best practices. “Milwaukee is leading this charge,” said Earl Buford, Employ Milwaukee president and chief executive officer. “Think about it, we’re working with Chicago and Detroit and they’ve asked us to lead this charge; that’s awesome.” The consortium has already been working together over the last several years, using its size to help secure

$13 million in funding. The grants have included training for middle- to high-skill jobs, an American Apprenticeship grant and a TechHire grant. “We really do face issues where employers are frustrated because they can’t find workers and workers are frustrated because they can’t find jobs,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said. “Working with our workforce investment boards, we can really provide that bridge.” The announcement on Friday, July 7, 2017 further formalizes the consortium’s work. Buford said the initial (Continued on pg. 2)

Wisconsin Black Historical Society hosts a town hall meeting on violence

A capacity crowd attended a town hall meeting on violence and new approaches to policing on June 26, 2017 at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society. The meeting, which was called by Alderman Russell Stamper, II and Alderman José G. Pérez, focused on how violence should be addressed in Milwaukee. Pictured at the panel discussion are (from left) Milwaukee Police Association President Michael Crivello; Center for Problem Oriented Policing Director Michael Scott; Office of Violence Prevention Director Reggie Moore; and Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn. Chief Flynn said that Milwaukee already employs a variation of community oriented policing, an approach which seeks to search for the causes of crime and develop new strategies and solutions to prevent it from occurring. The Office of Violence Prevention and others are urging the city to adopt a more “community oriented policing approach” similar to the one which was recently adopted by the city of Cincinnati.

The primary sponsors of the event were the Salvation Army and Safe and Sound. Safe and Sound Executive Director Katie Sanders said the idea to remember Zyszkiewicz with a gathering dedicated to violence prevention began with local residents. Salvation Army Media Relations Director Rachel Greenwood said the two title sponsors merely helped residents connect with organizations with the resources necessary to implement the proposal. Employ Milwaukee to lead Midwest workforce group consortium (Continued from pg. 1) goals for the coming year would be to create regional, sector-base advisory panels with business leaders from throughout the region; continue to take advantage of the scope and size of the organization to share information and secure funding; leverage the expertise of workforce leaders in the region; and extend the group’s capacity by engaging national and regional community groups like the Boys and Girls Clubs or the United Way. Buford said the group is still working to define exactly what success will look like for the consortium. “We’re going to look at how we measure ourselves in effectiveness,” he said. “Is it solving unemployment? Not sure. Is it increasing apprenticeship in this country? That’s a goal. So right now we’re not actually quite sure yet, but that’s why it’s so im-

portant that we collectively came together as effort to start defining what that looks like.” Employ Milwaukee will be leading the administration of the consortium, an effort supported by a $100,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase announced on Friday. Bader Philanthropies Inc., is also supporting the build-up of Employ Milwaukee’s capacity to administer and fundraise for the consortium. Even with the additional support, it might be reasonable to be concerned that collaborating across the region could lead Employ Milwaukee to take its focus off work in the city and county. Buford said that won’t be an issue and the area will have access to resources it may not have otherwise received, along with the opportunity to bring back ideas from other communities.

In a statement, Abele said returning to a focus on the entire county, not just the city “we can provide support for individuals who have specific barriers to getting and keeping a good-paying job. “The workforce needs throughout the Midwest are not confined to certain geographic areas,” Barrett said. “I think all of us share the vision of bringing back more family supporting jobs to Midwestern cities and this is an opportunity for us to do that together.” The mayor added that Employ Milwaukee’s leadership of the consortium shows “not only is this workforce

Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Looking for leadership There is much that can be said, looked at or experienced in terms of those who seek out various positions of leadership in our modern society. At every level of our social endeavor, there are and will always be positions that require some form of leadership. The titles of leadership vary from one business, firm, industry, government or community. But the clear facts remain; there is a need for someone to be in charge or responsible for ensuring that things are operating efficiently. Without question, we all admire seeing good and effective leadership. We also appreciate when individuals aspire to positions of leadership with greater responsibility. On the other side, we expect people in positions of authority to

take their duties seriously, be a person of great character and integrity. We also like to witness our leaders rise to perceived expectations and that no moment is “too small” or “too big” in which they cannot be effective. It’s just part of the job.

Being Frank Every different nationality on the planet has issues. Caucasian people have paranoia issues. Jewish people have persecution issues. There is no magic wand to solve any one race’s problems. What if every nationality decided to

We have no problem pointing out when our leaders let us down or when things do not turn out positively. And we also will give them credit, when credit is due, for making a good decision. Some of our leadership models have

been created to deal with great challenges, to shoulder greater responsibilities, to lead by example or to charge into battle when it is required. Leadership is at times without easy answers, it’s not for the faint of heart or for those that lack the courage to face mounting issues. It is not for title seekers and those who seek out honors or awards. True leadership is for those who see themselves as making a difference when moments matter and the lives of others are at stake. What is so concerning these days is that so many people do not understand the real value of leadership and why it is so important to us for our modern society. A clear example today is the fact that a large number of our military veterans, who have served the nation in times

saying give up your past. What I am saying is that holding on to these things has not made any nationality on the planet any happier. For example, what has keeping the Holocaust alive done for Jewish people mentally? True, the reparations Jewish people received were great. What does the constant reminder of Nazi atrocities do for Jewish people mentally? Is it possible that the constant reminders keeping the atrocities alive in people’s minds are a form of torture? The Jewish people are a proud race. I understand the effort and the rationale for Holocaust reminders. They want to be sure something like what happened in Nazi Germany can never happen again to the Jewish people. What all people should do is ensure what happened in those Nazi camps can never happen to any people on the planet. There are concentration camps being run in countries around the world in 2017. There are some pris-

ons in the USA run like concentration camps. Is it okay for one race of people to be exploited and not another? The “me only” attitude that each nationality has adopted has to be put aside. As long as one nationality is only concerned with their benefits, the world will suffer. This is the case with the planet today. The Caucasian has exploited every resource and opportunity on the planet. The paranoia that Caucasian people have exhibited over the past 2,000 years is unparalleled in history. Caucasian paranoia comes from the fact they are a minority on a global scale. In order to offset this demographic deficit, the Caucasian has managed to take control of the world’s economy. The question is, how has this fact affected the world is the question? You have various nationalities with their own axes to grind. Latino people have issues with the US over certain aspects of immigration. The Arab people have problems with the entire Western world. The need for nationalities to push their own agenda has created a certain degree of insanity on the planet. This madness has led to uncounted acts of aggres-

sion, murder and exploitation. This is why people on the planet Earth have to forget their selfish needs and uplift all humanity. I am not saying give everyone a penthouse and Bentley. What I am saying is give everyone a sense of self-worth. The “me first” mentality that has shaped all nationalities over the past thousand years has to be revamped. Instead of looking to uplift a certain faction of people, let's lift up all people. If everyone is feeling good about him or herself, how can atrocities begin to form in minds? If everyone is looking out for each other, how can exploitation happen? You can be a proud Caucasian, Jewish or Latino person and still work to uplift everyone. Let’s face it, the mirror tells you daily what nationality or race you belong to. The key is to not let the image in the mirror define whom you assist, care about, and are as a being on the planet. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

What does it all mean? The symbols of our faith (Week 3) the Father; the Son, Jesus Christ; and the Holy Spirit). All three are one; yet, the one is three. The Nicene Creed was developed when controversy arose regarding the trinity. In the first centuries, professing Christians were seriously divided over matters of belief. The most important division involved the core of Christianity: the relationship of God the Son to God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Arianism (named for Arius, a church leader in Egypt) gained many followers who found Arianism easier to understand than the true biblical teaching of the trinity, that God is One God but also in three persons. Arius also undermined the basis for salvation that God through Christ took upon Himself man’s punishment for sin. This could only be true if Christ as the Son of God is God, as the first chapter of the Gospel of John clearly teaches. When this disagreement was raised, King Constantine, the first Christian emperor, took it upon himself to call a meeting of church bish-

Creed. The Nicene Creed (A.D. 325) teaches that all three members of the trinity shares in the divine essence, making them God. While we may never fully understand the mystery of the trinity, let’s continue to worship God for who He is in our lives through our songs of praise and in our words and actions as they reflect something of His ops to resolve the disputes. excellent character. The value of symbols lies in the fact that they express important thoughts more strikingly and in much less space than can be done by words. There are many symbols which represent Christianity. They are an illustration of an idea, either visually or in audible form. However, although symbols are meant to make a statement about our faith, quickly and effectively without the use of words or explanations, our faith, should not be supported by them. This month, and in response to reader request, this writer has been looking deeper at some of the symbols of our faith. This week this writer will look deeper into the equilateral triangle that is commonly used to represent the Holy Trinity. The equilateral triangle has three equilateral (equal) sides and three equilateral angles. All three sides are equal, yet all three sides are distinct. This symbol is the perfect symbol to represent the Holy Trinity. As Christians, we believe there is only one God (called monotheism), who is eternal; but we also believe that there are three distinct parts of that one God (God

Meet the new face of real estate development in Milwaukee!

Associates In Commercial Real Estate (ACRE) graduates walk the aisle

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

It’s a mission: After 28 years, owner of WI’s last black-owned bookstore turns the page

Carla Allison

The 2016-2017 ACRE class graduated at a ceremony for friends and family held at Marquette University’s Alumni Memorial Union on June 13, 2017. Designed to cultivate minority leadership in the field of real estate, property management and construction, ACRE is coordinated by LISC Milwaukee, a nationally affiliated community development nonprofit, in partnership with Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The 26-week program includes instruction from industry professionals, site visits, and hands-on development experience. This year, twenty students of all ages and backgrounds enhanced their skills, and are ready to work in Milwaukee and beyond. The pro-

gram was founded in 2005 by Mark Eppli, Professor and Bell Chair, Marquette University. To date, 220 students have graduated. LISC’s Executive Director Donsia Strong Hill, a graduate of the inaugural class in 2005, emceed the event. “I would not be standing before you today, were it not for this program. You don’t have to look far to see ACRE graduates demonstrating their leadership across this city in all sectors at all levels.” Fatima Benhaddou represented her class as the graduate speaker. “The students tonight do share a reality, a reality in which it is difficult to find someone who looks like you, or shares the same background, doing the type of work you want to be doing. If I waited for the first half-Latina/half-North

African female Muslim developer, I’m pretty sure I’d need to find some hobbies to fill my time! The ACRE program was created to address this glaring issue in the real estate development field.” Class of 2016 alumna Ariam Kesete of AK Development LLC, talked about her transition from working in social services to real estate development. “Learning about Low Income Housing Credit projects helped me connect how important it is to connect real estate development to the needs of the community. I also learned how to meet the community where they’re at, to get things done.” Kesete also shared how she tries to “think globally, act locally” by considering the broader needs of the community as she develops specific projects.

She closed the doors after 28 years spent opening up so many minds. The final sale at Reader's Choice, the last blackowned bookstore in Wisconsin, located in Milwaukee, happened Saturday, July 8, 2017. The owner, Carla Allison, is now gearing up for retirement. "I call them my bookstore friends," Allison said. Over 28 years, she impacted so many lives. "She is friendly, loving, informational," Liddie Collins-Siegrist said. "With her customers, she shared book suggests while encouraging literacy. "She introduces you to new authors. It's a treasure," Collins-Siegrist said. Full of knowledge, she has exposed the community to stories of different genres, written by the same ethnicity. "I specialize in minority authors, so there are so many African American authors that would not be found in chain

bookstores or other independently owned bookstores," Allison said. After running the last blackowned bookstore in the state of Wisconsin, she's turning the page, gearing up for retirement. "It's bittersweet," Allison said. She was praised by city leaders and thanked for her service. "Your work in this community will surely be missed. The Common Council of the City of Milwaukee hereby congratulates Carla Allison on her retirement from the Readers Choice bookstore store. We extend appreciation on behalf of the community for her valuable contributions and wishes for her a happy and healthy retirement," Alderwoman Milele Coggs said. As Allison looks ahead to the next chapter in her life, she's reflecting on the people she's helped and influenced. "It's not really a business for me. It's a mission," Allison said.

Two Hearts

Two hearts were as one on Earth, Two hearts that were entwined. My love for you was ever strong, Now you live inside my mind. I know you’ve gone to Heaven; From Earth you slipped away, But faith in you, my dearest Lord, Keeps me strong each day. Two hearts once beat together, Now one beats all alone. I know one day we’ll meet, dear Lord, The day you call me home.

You Have What It Takes F

igure it out for yourself, my lad, You’ve all that the greatest of men have had, Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes And a brain to use if you would be wise. With this equipment they all began, So start for the top and say, “I can.”

Look them over, the wise and great

They take their food from a common plate, And similar knives and forks they use, With similar laces they tie their shoes. The world considers them brave and smart, But you’ve all they had when they made their start.

You can triumph and come to skill,

You can be great if you only will. You’re well equipped for what fight you choose, You have legs and arms and a brain to use, And the man who has risen great deeds to do Began his life with no more than you.

You are the handicap you must face,

You are the one who must choose your place, You must say where you want to go, How much you will study the truth to know. God has equipped you for life, but He Lets you decide what you want to be.

Courage must come from the soul within,

The man must furnish the will to win. So figure it out for yourself, my lad. You were born with all that the great have had, With your equipment they all began, Get hold of yourself and say: “I can.” George Washington Carver recited this poem by Edgar A. Guest to every graduating class at Tuskegee University. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Q: “What is the purpose of education?” A: “The purpose of education is to keep the

world from cheating you. If you’re ignorant, the world will cheat you. If you are weak, the world will kick. And if you’re a coward, the world will keep you running.

Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mayes, President of Morehouse College and mentor to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Congratulations

to everyone in Milwaukee Public Schools — staff, administrators, teachers, volunteers, Dr. Darienne Driver, and ESPECIALLY THE STUDENTS.

June traffic crashes claim 59 lives in Wisconsin

Through the first half of this year, traffic deaths down slightly compared to 2016

Preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) shows that 59 people died in Wisconsin traffic crashes last month – three more compared to June of last year and five above the five-year average for the month of June. The safest month of June occurred in 2015 with 44 fatalities, and the deadliest June was in 1956 with 115 fatalities. Through the first half of this year, Wisconsin recorded 271 traffic deaths including 31 pedestrians, 29 motorcyclists and one bicyclist. Traffic deaths through the end of June were one less than the same period last year. During the recent July Fourth holiday weekend (from Friday, June 30 at 6 p.m. until mid-

night on July 4), there were eight traffic fatalities in Wisconsin compared to 12 last year. “The summer months generally equate to higher vehicle speeds - and driving just 5 mph over the limit increases stopping distances, decreases reaction time, and puts drivers, passengers and everyone else along the roadway at greater risk,” said David Pabst, Director of WisDOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety. “We’re asking drivers to watch their speed and be alert at all times, especially when traffic is heavy and where road construction is underway.” Last year in Wisconsin, speed-related traffic crashes resulted in 186 deaths and 8,250 injuries.

Wealth Building

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Save on your summer road trip adventure Are you packing up your car and hitting the road this summer? You're not alone. According to a survey conducted by AAA, road trips are the most popular type of vacation for families in the U.S. in 2017. In fact, 10 percent more families are expected to take road trips this year than last. From driving to the tip of Cape Cod, to seeing the Great Lakes all the way to a drive through the Yosemite Valley in California, there are limitless ways to explore on the road. Whether you're going to visit family or taking off on an epic adventure, a road trip can be a great way to make travel about the

journey rather than the destination. Before you hit the road, make sure your car can handle the trip. Before you pack up your car, it's a good idea to take your car to a mechanic and ensure that it's ready for the drive. Having your car inspected and serviced by a mechanic before a road trip can be a worthwhile investment that could both save you money and prevent an untimely breakdown. Looking into a rental car is an alternative you may want to consider if you're hoping to avoid wear and tear that might depreciate your car's value. Consider your options carefully and choose what

makes most financial sense for you. Pack for bumps along the way. A flat tire or dead battery can put a serious damper on your road trip, especially if you're not prepared. Keeping a spare tire in your car and checking your tire pressure and tread should be on your pre-trip checklist. Along with your bags, bring a few items for preventive maintenance measures on the road. Having jumper cables, coolant and engine oil handy can save you time and money. Map out your trip ahead of time. While just jumping in the car and driving without a set destination can be

an enticing idea, the spontaneity will likely result in more expenses. Knowing when and where you'll stop ahead of time, especially for hotels and outings, will help you stick to a budget. If you still crave the more adventurous aspects of a road trip, you can make a general plan for your major excursions and routes, while stopping for unexpected attractions and views as you go. Comparison shop to keep hotel prices under control. Booking ahead of time and using comparison shopping websites will save you from driving around to find the best hotel deal when you're already tired from a

long drive. If you do have to book last-minute, consider using hotel coupon books, hotel-booking apps, group coupon sites or reward points to save a little more. Camping could be another alternative to booking a hotel, which can be particularly cheap if you already have gear like tents and sleeping bags. Managing your mileage could add up to major savings. Though fuel prices may generally be down, the cost of filling up your tank can still add up. To make this cost more manageable, you can take advantage of apps that help you find the best gas prices in your area. In certain cases, you may also want to consider renting a more fuel-efficient car. You can save even more by mapping your trip ahead of time to avoid road tollways and construction that might slow you down. Keep kids entertained to avoid unnecessary stops. Kids tend to get antsy in the back seat, which can lead to more frequent stops and a few impulse buys if you're not prepared. Packing snacks and meals ahead of time can help you avoid making extra purchases at the gas station, and will often be cheaper. Also have a plan for keeping your kids entertained. Let them choose a few activities ahead of time, like preparing a road trip playlist or making a game like road trip bingo with sights you'll be seeing along the way. If you have a tablet or phone, downloading free games, podcasts or movies can be another great option. Protect your home while you are away. One other way to save on your road trip is to ensure that your home is protected while you're gone. If you can, ask a trusted neighbor, friend or family member to keep an eye on your house. If you can't find someone to help, you can call US Postal Service to hold your mail while you're away. Double check that you've locked all doors and windows, including the garage door, and that you've set your alarms and put your lights on a timer. Bottom line: Road trips can be an adventurous and inexpensive way to see the country, but costs can add up if you're underprepared. Planning your stops and packing to anticipate your needs could help you enjoy the ride rather than worry about the expenses.
