UNCF-Milwaukee hosts 2018 Walk/Run for Education
Photos by Yvonne Kemp
On Saturday, July 14, 2018, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hosted their annual Walk/Run for Education at Veterans Park on the lakefront. The family friendly 5K (3.1 mile) walk and certified run is a major fundraising event for the the Milwaukee Chapter of UNCF. It has become an annual tradition with many of the corporate employees, donors, volunteers and friends who look forward to participating in it. This year's event in particular had more than 1500 registered participants. The funds from this run go to support UNCF scholarship and student support program for more than 900 students, as well as support to 37 historically black colleges. Pictured at the run are (top photo, from left) The Blood Center of Wisconsin's Wilbert Taylor and Todd Coleman; S.C. Johnson Wax's E.B. The event is a key fundraiser for the Milwaukee Chapter and is organized by (top right photo, from left) UNCF Wisconsin Campaign Coordinator Julietta Henry; and UNCF Wisconsin Regional Development Director Michael Cox.
Local entrepreneur and poet celebrates 90th Birthday
On Saturday, July 15, 2018 , the Grant family honored their family matriarch, Mrs. Carnell Grant, during her 90th birthday celebration. She was joined by her family, friends, New Covenant Baptist Church family, and Juneau Fidelity Temple #247 of the Elks at Devon Seafood & Steak in Glendale to recognize her lifetime accomplishments. Mrs. Grant was the co-owner of Grant’s Cleaners where she worked as a seamstress during the mid-1950’s until mid-1980s. She also worked as a licensed practical nurse at County General Hospital in the 1970s. Mrs. Grant is a lifetime member of the Elks and wrote articles in the Milwaukee Courier in the 1960s as the "Elks reporter." In 1996, Mrs. Grant authored a book of poetry about her life experiences entitled, “The Poetic Diary of Connie Grant,” which earned national accolades. One of her poems named “East of the Sunrise” was published in the National Library of Photo by Yvonne Kemp Poetry’s Anthology. A second poem, "If You Have It, Share It,” was published in the Famous Poets Society’s Anthology and described as one of the most famous poems of the 20th century. Pictured are (from left) Elise Taylor; Lyn Grant; Lloyd Grant, Jr.; Birthday Girl Carnell Grant; Sabrina Grant; Lenise Norris, and Ricky Norris. Mrs. Grant reached the golden age of 90 on July 17, 2018. Congratulations Mrs. Grant! www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Local missing teen found
Teenasia Scobey-Polacheck, the 16-year-old girl last seen on Sunday, July 1, has been found safe and was reunited with her family late Friday night, July 13, 2018. The teen disappeared July 1. Her family said she hopped on her bicycle and The NAACP Youth Council starts the new year with newly elected officers. left home after she was told The Youth Council meets at 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month at to stop texting an older man. Milwaukee youth who are interested in advocating for issues that substantially affect young people are invited to join the NAACP Youth Council. Additionally, congratulations go to Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council Vice President Lailaa Muhammad, who was awarded a scholarship to attend the 109th NAACP National Convention held July 14 to July 18 in San Antonio, TX. Lailaa’s success was based upon her timely essay concerning several current issues. In addition to her position with the Youth Council, Lailaa is a honor student at Rufus King High School, where she plays alto saxophone in the jazz band and the marching band. Good job!
Officials say Teenasia was reunited with her family late Friday night as a result of contacts made through community outreach. The following statement was issued by Annemarie and Bill Scobey-Polacheck following the return of their daughter: “We are so very grateful to have Teenasia safe at home with her family. She is healthy and happy to be here and we are so happy to have her with us. "We want to thank the entire community who helped bring our daughter home, including the Glendale and Milwaukee Police Departments, Tory Lowe, our family, friends and neighbors, and the many volunteers who helped make this joyful reunion possible.”

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and 11 other U.S. senators led by Senator Edward Markey (D-MA), reintroduced the Contaminant and Lead Electronic Accounting and Reporting Requirements (CLEARR) for Drinking Water Act. The CLEARR Drinking Water Act authorizes about $1 billion for small and disadvantaged communities to replace contaminated infrastructure and directs for the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to establish requirements for electronic reporting of water quality testing results, update the requirements for repeat or serious offending water systems and create a system so that residents can request in-home water quality tests from the EPA and receive the test results in an expedited manner. “Safe drinking water is a priority for every community and is essential to the economic health of Wisconsin’s communities,” said Senator Baldwin. “Too often though, small and underserved communities lack the resources to solve our most pressing water challenges, including lead and other contaminants. That’s why I’m working to make sure that every community across Wisconsin has access to clean drinking water, and safe and reliable water infrastructure.”

Volunteers help drive student achievement At the MPS STEM Fair this spring, held at Miller Park, dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to create a successful event for students by serving as chaperones, greeters, guides, judges, content experts, and to assist with planning, setup, and tear down. Students enjoyed a rich experience by displaying their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects, talking with judges, and learning about DNA extraction, welding, worm composting, and more from local experts. students and included cor- consin, Boerner Botanical Volunteers came from porate representation from Gardens, Waukesha Techniacross the city to work with the Medical College of Wis- cal College, Arts @ Large,
and other partners. More than 500 students from 48 schools displayed their science knowledge and practiced their public speaking skills during the judging of their projects. Students were enthusiastic about presenting their projects to judges who work in STEM fields and about their experience at Miller Park. Volunteers commented that they were impressed with the students’ expertise and the large scope of the event. Several judges remarked that they volunteered last year and were excited to return this year.
MPS has hundreds of volunteer opportunities for individuals, small groups, or large corporate partners. Activities include reading to children, judging events like the STEM Fair, tutoring, planning events, conducting mock interviews, and mentoring. Volunteer opportunities are available working with children from K4 to 12th grade. Separating growing pains from warning signs in kids When your child trips on his shoes, does it signal a developmental disorder in the making? Interfering with classmates' work might now be viewed as an early sign of trouble. More parents of young children are hearing surprising warnings these days from educators and doctors who say they are picking up on the subtler signs of developmental problems. It used to be red-flag disorders like autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder that attracted attention in early childhood. But now specialists say they are being asked to evaluate kids for a more nuanced array of issues to correct them before they mushroom into bigger problems. This includes behavior that can be commonplace in small children, like clumsiness, disorganized motor planning, poor self-dressing and weak communication skills. Dealing with stimuli—known as sensory processing—is especially problematic for young kids, who might find themselves overwhelmed by a loud playground or a sticky substance like Play-Doh. Knowing whether these responses are quirks or problems can be tricky. But while there's no consensus on this relatively new set of theories, a growing group of specialists said it is worth getting
the child checked, because these behavioral patterns can signal disorders that might make school and friendships tough for a child. There is exceptional focus right now on young children's development, in part because of the rapid rise in autism diagnoses, now at 1 in 88 U.S. children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Work with these kids has shown that catching a problem early is key to recharting its course, according to the CDC. And struggling kids will be in the limelight this spring, when psychiatrists publish the first update in 19 years to their diagnostic bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, also known as the DSM-5. It includes a number of changes
for childhood disorders, including new diagnoses such as social communication disorder and global developmental delay, and broadened criteria for learning disorders. All this is sending kids into the offices of occupational, speech and physical therapists, where treatments include building muscle strength and practicing handwriting. These are primary tools to help the growing cadre of kids diagnosed with developmental disabilities, up 17 percent between the late 1990s and the late 2000s, according to a 2011 report published in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. That same period witnessed a 25 percent jump in parents' reporting a child with a devel-

opmental delay. The catch is that many behaviors in kids can be considered normal as they grow. Some parents and doctors say children should be given more time to tell if a certain behavior is a quirk of personality or a disorder that needs treatment. "At school, if a kid is a little clumsy or not talking like the others, all of a sudden they are referred to speech therapy or early intervention," said Michel Cohen, a pediatrician who runs Tribeca Pediatrics in New York. "People are so quick to pull the trigger." One of the doctors in his practice recently saw a child who had been licking his shirt in preschool. The teacher had told the parents that the child should be evaluated by an occupational therapist for a suspected sensory problem. The pediatrician ultimately convinced the parents that the child was developing normally, Dr. Cohen said. Though skeptics remain on the proper course of action, health professionals and educators are paying more thought to developmental delays, said Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp, chief of the developmental disabilities branch at the CDC and an author of the report in Pediatrics. Screenings at children's well-baby visits more routinely include a thoughtful discussion of a child's development, rather than just his or her growth, for instance, prompted in part by measures in the Affordable Care Act that require coverage of such consultations. "In certain communities, we are picking up on milder abnormal developmental milestones." One increasingly popular way to explain why some kids struggle in classrooms is called sensory processing disorder. A child who presses down too hard on crayons and breaks them or keeps running into other kids on the playground doesn't understand where his body is in space, said Diana Henry, an occupational therapist in Flagstaff, AZ In these situations, the brain and body appear to be unable to process and interpret muscle and movement information from the senses correctly, she said. Other kids with sensory problems might struggle with motor planning, which has to do with the sequence of steps required to put clothes on or eat lunch. These kids might also have what's known as developmental coordination disorder, said Bryan King, director of psychiatry at Seat-
tle Children's Hospital and a member of the group working on updating the DSM's developmental disorders section. The DSM's experts considered adding sensory processing disorder as a separate malady for the first time. Instead, they've included some sensory criteria as a possible manifestation of autism. While research continues, many schools are approaching kids who might have problems earlier through a strategy known as "responsive intervention" rather than waiting for them to fail, said Dixon Deutsch, executive director of NYC Charter School Center's Special Education Collaborative. The School for Friends, a preschool in Washington, D.C., is one of many to have contracted with specialists to screen kids for developmental problems. "The schools have caught up with it, but some parents are reluctant," said director Jim Clay. "They don't want their kids labeled." Treatment can grow expensive quickly. Private occupational therapy can run to about $200 a session in a high-priced market like New York, and insurance often does not cover this cost. (Prices depend on location and whether the family is paying out of pocket for a private therapist or whether they're getting services through early intervention or school.) All the heightened awareness around these issues can pay off for kids, as it has for six-year-old Aden Weber of Flagstaff. His mother Jamie said she noticed her son was having problems in preschool, such as "freaking out" when his teachers put his hands in finger paint or when he'd lie down in the corner. She dismissed it as "just normal kid behavior," electing to work with Aden more at home. As kindergarten approached and academic expectations increased, so did Aden's problems. He got in trouble in school for messing with other children's work. When no other diagnosis fit, Ms. Weber turned to an occupational therapist, who thought Aden might be struggling with sensory processing. Now, as part of a research project at his school, Aden's teachers are learning techniques to help him organize himself. He wears headphones to tune out noise and chews gum when he takes tests, interventions that are making a difference for him. "It's way easier to blow past something like this and discount it as behavioral," said Ms. Weber. "It scares me to think about how things would go if he had not been diagnosed."

First-time Brewers All-Star Jeremy Jeffress turned life and game around It’s taken nearly 12 years, but Jeremy Jeffress is finally an All-Star at age 30. A hard-throwing high school pitcher when Milwaukee selected him with the 16th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Jeffress’ path to the big leagues was stymied by three failed drug tests, the last two of which drew suspensions of 50 and 100 games, respectively. Jeffress finally made his big league debut late in 2010 but was sent to Kansas City that winter as part of the deal that brought Zack Greinke to Milwaukee. He’d appear in just 27 games over the next two seasons for the Royals, who traded him to Toronto for cash on Nov. 8. He spent most of the 2013 season in the Blue Jays’ minor league system, which might very well have saved not only Jeffress’ career, but also his life. He was playing for Class AAA Buffalo when he suffered a seizure, an issue that had plagued Jeffress for much of his adult life. The team sent him to a specialist who determined that Jeffress had juvenile epilepsy. “If we never figured out what was wrong, I think he could have fallen into a very dark place,” said Joshua
Kusnick, Jeffress’ longtime agent. “That was amazing of (the Blue Jays) to do that for him.” The condition had taken a toll on the then-25-year-old. Years of headaches and unpredictable seizures led to increased anxiety which Jeffress tried to manage with marijuana, despite the risk to his career. With the diagno-
sis, Jeffress was put on appropriate medication and returned to the big leagues that fall, finishing the season with nine scoreless appearances. When Toronto designated him for assignment after just three outings to open the 2014 season, the Brewers were one of the first teams to reach out. Gord Ash, then Milwaukee’s assistant gener-
al manager, offered a minor league deal and Jeffress accepted, hoping to get back on track with the team that drafted him. The move was a good one for Jeffress. He posted a 1.88 ERA in 29 appearances and was even better in 2015, going 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA in 72 outings. He became the team’s closer when Will Smith opened the 2016 season on the disabled list and converted 27 of 28 appearances before Milwaukee sent him to Texas along with Jonathan Lucroy as general manager David Stearns went into full-scale rebuilding mode. The trade gave Jeffress his first taste of a playoff race but he nearly missed the postseason after an Aug. 26 arrest for driving while intoxicated. He spent a month in rehab, returning for the regular-season finale, and made one appearance in the postseason for the Rangers, who were swept by Toronto in the ALDS. “He was excited to go there and pitch in the postseason,” Kusnick said. “He felt like he let them down and it crushed him.” Jeffress never got on track in 2017 and had a 5.83 ERA in 39 games when the Rang-
ers traded him back to Milwaukee for minor league right-hander Tayler Scott. He quickly reverted to form and went 4-0 with a 3.65 ERA in 22 appearances as the Brewers chased a playoff spot. Heading into the winter, Jeffress made it clear to Kusnick that he wanted to stay in Milwaukee. So much so that he accepted a non-guaranteed, one-year contract — with two team options. “I’ve done much better here than with other teams. That’s why I wanted to come back,” Jeffress said. “It was a tough winter for a lot of guys but I wanted to come back to Milwaukee if at all possible. I know my contract is not guaranteed but if I do what I know I can do, it will all fall into place.” And once again, it has. He’s headed to his first All-Star Game after going 6-1 with a 1.34 ERA through 46 appearances. “For him to be here today shows how hard he’s worked, and how he’s improved in all areas of his life,” said outfielder Lorenzo Cain, one of five Brewers on the NL roster. “I’m happy for him. I’m glad he’s here and I’m going to enjoy this experience with him.”
