Vera LeBlance celebrates milestone 95th birthday

The weekend of July 15 - July 16, 2017 was a special one for Vera LeBlance (right photo, left), for it was her 95th birthday weekend. The birthday festivities started with a surprise picnic with fam-
ily and friends at Cannon Park, 303 North 95th Street, on Saturday, July 15, 2017. The festivities continued with a special surprise church celebration on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she was presented proclamations from many local community leaders, including Mayor Tom Barrett. Following the services was a brunch at the Hotel Metro, 411 East Mason Street. There she was joined by family and friends for brunch and to share stories from her amazing life.
Garfield celebrates 20th anniversary of annual street festival
The Garfield Avenue Blues, Jazz, Gospel and Arts Festival returned for its 20th year on Saturday, July 15, 2017 with music, food and more. The festival was held on W. Garfield Ave., from N. King Drive to N. 7th St., and featured four music stages throughout the day. More than 100 vendors were present selling food, goods, art and more. The family-friendly festival helps showcase the wide variety of artists, musicians, churches, performers and food vendors in the area. Dr. Kourtnei M. Robinson is a 2008 graduate from Rufus King; she attended Howard University and University of Wisconsin Madison as a undergraduate student. On Saturday June 3, 2017 her long journey was completed at The University of Texas at Galveston School of Medicine, where Kourtnei was awarded the degree Doctor of Medicine. She is the first doctor in her family. She is pictured with family, including her mother, her father and retired police forensic officer Kim Robinson, and her two siblings. be an auction on the undivided property which would include all the owners. On auction day, the developer stepped in and bid on the entire estate. His money over-powered the rest of the family. They each received a modest portion of the sale price and he walked off with the entire land grant. This scenario was repeated in all the applicable states. I went online and searched some of my late relatives (the ones who had property). I entered my grandfather’s name, Thomas Alford, and my great-grandfather’s name, Cicero Alford. To my shock there they were! Thomas was awarded a grant of 160 acres in 1916 while Cicero was awarded his grant of 160 acres in 1901 right next door to each other. So, what happened to all this land – 320 contiguous acres of prime farm land? I went down to the courthouse to search land records and that told the story. There was this white realtor by the last name of Roos who obviously approached my people and suggested that he would help them apply for free land (They were illiterate and/ or intimidated by applying to the federal government). When the grant arrived, Roos started buying shares from them (for his fee) and then they would quickly sell the rest to every white person around them until it was all sold out except for the 40
from some Blacks I was helping in southern Louisiana. They were upset that their land was taken away while they were growing up. One of them showed me a copy of the original land grant award. It was for 160 acres to their grandfather and signed by President Grover Cleveland. They never did a “family secession” which would have cut up the ownership of the inheritors by individual names and specific property assignments (equal parts). They had a first cousin in prison for a long sentence. He was approached by a white developer who told him that he had undivided ownership within these 160 acres. He offered to buy it from the inmate. The prisoner sold it for a modest amount and now the developer became an owner with the rest of the family. He went to court and filed for a “forced secession” on that property. There would

acres that they would keep for themselves. Looking at the books this was a cottage industry for local realtors. A great opportunity for rural Blacks just slipped through their “fingers”. Blacks at this point in our history had little respect for land. Oh, if they only knew. When the great migration started taking place, people who still had land would sell it for a penny on a dollar just to migrate to western or northern cities. Blacks in Los Angeles would call a realtor in Louisiana to sell land they just inherited. They would fly into the Shreveport airport, sign the papers, take the check, and fly right back to L.A., to buy a new Mercedes car. They would not even look at the land (that may have had oil, timber, natural gas, and other valuable commodities on it? We had millions upon millions and just let it go. This time let’s not let a great opportunity slip by again. Let’s get rid of the estate tax. Why let the IRS take it? At the time, America was expanding vastly via the Louisiana Purchase and manifest destiny (land grabbing from Spain, Mexico, and Native Americans). Through a simple application process American citizens and freed slaves could receive a land grant of 160 acres. All they had to do was work the land for at least five years. Unbeknownst to many of us our forefathers participated in this process. Many of us looked at the land handed down to us by our grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. We think it is nice; but wait, it is more than that. For many of us, the land we have inherited could be miniscule compared to the land our families originally had. I first learned about this

People are starting to get excited about Congress planning on a new tax structure. Included in this project is the possibility of ending the estate tax. This tax has been a legacy killer to many Black families. When a patriarch/ matriarch passes away the IRS will determine how much of an estate they are leaving to the rest of their family. If it reaches a certain amount the estate tax will kick in and deprive the heirs of significant inheritance. This can be averted with very expensive legal maneuvers ahead of the death. Publicly held corporation owners (shareholders) are exempt from this onerous tax also. It is the middle class that is starting to build significant wealth that will be knocked to the “ground” by our government. Newspaper publishers, farmers/ranchers, car dealers and various other types of business owners will be the ones who get hit the hardest. This year is a great opportunity for us to get ourselves organized and educate our elected officials to end this expensive predicament. Let us come together and deliver a final blow to this law that is intended to prevent up and coming business persons from building wealth for their children and grandchildren to last for centuries. While we will not dwell at length on the comprehensive meanings of all, it would suffice here to say that we do want to treat each individually outlining their symbolic meanings along with scriptural references. Dove. As a symbol, the dove speaks of gentleness, tenderness, loveliness, innocence, mildness, peace, purity and patience. With a halo the dove represents the divine nature of the Holy Spirit. Without the halo, it represents peace. With flames, it is frequently used to represent the Holy Spirit,
Fire. When the Holy Spirit is spoken of as fire, this illustrates the purging, purification, fiery boldness and zeal produced by the anointing by the Spirit. The Spirit is compared to the fire because fire warms, illuminates, spreads, and purifies. (See Isa. 4:4, Matt. 3:11.) In the Old Testament God displayed Himself many times in the form of flames. (Gen. 15:17, Ex. 3:2-6.) Luke’s reference to

The Spirit is an exclusive seal of salvation whereby believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit. The sealing itself occurs when the good news is accepted in faith. This is your chance to find your locker, find your classrooms, learn about sports and clubs, and get tips from older students. You’ll learn how to navigate your first year of high school, and how to get set up for a successful sophomore year and graduation in 2021. All Milwaukee Public Schools incoming freshman are encouraged to attend Freshman Bridge at their high school in August. Dates are listed at the end of this article. Sarcoidosis: Once-rare disease affects Black women more is always active, requiring treatment to keep it at bay. But, even once sarcoidosis is suspected, diagnosis is not straight-forward. “There is no reliable laboratory test to identify who has sarcoidosis and who does not,” Crouser says. Instead, the diagnosis is made with a combination of imaging — such as CT scans, MRI scans or PET scans – as well as lab work, biopsies, and possibly consultations with specialists. Caudle says that one of the things that her newlydiagnosed patients with sarcoidosis have in common is that they had symptoms that lingered. “If the symptoms keep recurring and they don’t seem to go away, or you don’t seem to feel like yourself or go back to normal, it’s a reason to see your doctor,” says Caudle. “The biggest thing is trusting your gut. “Patients are sometimes their best advocates,” Caudle adds. Remaining hopeful Williams is now 52 years old. She has been on oxygen for the last seven years, and has had to stop working. But, she is now on a regimen that works well for her. She volunteers and remains positive. “I think of things I can do, and not about what I can’t,” Williams says, about how she copes. “I come up with new ways to do things I really want to do.” Seven years ago, she was

These symptoms sound like they could be part of something else, so we may not think of sarcoidosis.” Sarcoidosis itself can look differently in different patients. Crouser says that there are basically three clinical patterns of sarcoidosis: mild disease that’s barely noticeable; disease that flares up occasionally; and disease that

able to keep her vacation plans to Jamaica, despite being newly ordered to wear oxygen. She found a portable oxygen machine that she could take on the flight and, with the help of her friends, she participated in activities and had a great time. Williams is also a patient ambassador for sarcoidosis. With the help of the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, she started a local support group in Ann Arbor, MI, providing education and emotional support to sarcoidosis patients, their families and their friends. She was also instrumental in the State of Michigan issuing a proclamation for April as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month. But, Williams is not done. “I would like to see doctors get more educated about the disease,” she says, “a disease that has been around for over 100 years and with more people being affected [by sarcoidosis].” Crouser is hopeful: “Over the past 10 years, I have witnessed growing momentum in the field and I am hopeful this momentum will continue to build.” Caudle reminds other patients to also remain positive. “It’s not the end of the world,” she says. “It is a condition that can be managed very well. People can live very healthy and happy lives with sarcoidosis. The first step is getting diagnosed.”

It is not well understood why African American women are more affected. “It is clear that much more research needs to be done to understand sarcoidosis in Black women,” says Crouser. The disease also affects women more than men, and people between the ages of 20 and 50 years of age more than other age groups. Black Americans also have a more severe disease presentation, says Crouser. In Williams’ case, her symptoms progressed in just under a year to where she couldn’t swallow liquids or her own saliva, and her voice became affected. “The doctors came in and began saying that the sarcoidosis was traveling through my body,” she recalls. Then, she got the news: sarcoidosis was in her spine, causing the new symptoms. She spent three weeks in the hospital then, ultimately going home with a feeding tube, until she could eat food again. Tough to pinpoint Some cases of sarcoidosis can be very difficult to diagnose because the symptoms can mimic a lot of other diseases. Williams says she had symptoms for years before her actual diagnosis. “I will admit, I thought I must be crazy, because they couldn’t find anything,” says Williams. “I would later find out it takes an average of five to seven years for a person [with sarcoidosis] to be diagnosed.” Dr. Jen Caudle, a boardcertified osteopathic family

Sheron Williams was 27 years old, attending college full-time, in a theatre production and working two jobs on campus when she was first diagnosed. “I would have mystery illnesses and I would simply push through it,” Williams says. “I just thought I was running myself down.” Twenty-five years ago, Williams found out it was more than that. On that day, she was told that her watering eyes, vision problems, leg swelling, fatigue and rashes were actually due to a disease called sarcoidosis. A disease with no known cause Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown origin that causes the immune system to overreact, leading to lung damage, skin rashes and other organ damage. This once rare disease now affects 200,000 people in the United States. “The cause or causes of sarcoidosis are not clear, but most experts agree that sarcoidosis is caused by an environmental exposure, most often transmitted to the lungs,” explains Dr. Elliott D. Crouser, a lung specialist with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who treats sarcoidosis, and a spokesperson for the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research. He adds that, in sarcoidosis, this exposure causes clusters of immune cells, called granulomas, to form in the lungs or other organs. Symptoms can also come and go on their own, without treatment. Building Your Wealth The interest trap In previous columns I have suggested that by merely identifying your net worth, by putting your debts and assets on paper, that you will be in the top 50 percent of Americans in terms of personal financial management. This week I want to introduce the power of interest and how it applies to various segments of Americans. If you are currently paying more than 8 percent interest on any debt, that means you are helping someone else get rich. You are working for the benefit of someone else rather than yourself. Those who are wealthy either have no debt, or at the most, are paying 5 percent on a mortgage, but are probably paying less than that. Just realize that the power of compounded interest means that at 7 percent, your money doubles every 10 years; and at 10 percent, it doubles every 7 years. While this helps those who have savings, it also works against those who have debts! There used to

Now it seems that any interest is legal and we can see interest rates as high as 300 percent and more when we look at what pay day loan companies charge. But when department stores are able to charge 22 percent on credit card balances, you can see the trap many consumers have fallen into.
The "buy-now-pay-later" advertising has put many into an impossible financial bind. Just imagine if you could earn 22 percent on your savings/investments. At this rate your money will more than double in less than 4 years; but of course, there in no such guaranteed investment opportunity for you or me. Why? Because at 22 percent per year, a $100 investment would grow to be worth $284,703 in 40 years.
The path to wealth is to get interest working for you, rather than against you. While there may not be any safe investments that can pay 22 percent, there are many that can earn close to 10 percent; and just think what you can accumulate if you can save $20 a week. At 10 percent over 30 years, you will have over $180,000 and this will be earning $18,000 in interest every year. Many of us may not have 30 years left, but our children and grandchildren do; and the sooner anyone starts saving and investing, the greater the rewards. Perhaps it will take you a full year before
you have paid off the debts and can begin saving. Maybe it will take two years; but no matter how long it may take once you get interest working for you as opposed to against you, you are on the path to becoming wealthy.
