Milwaukee Times contributor, local church leader and religious educator, Rev. Judith T. Lester, passes Milwaukee Times' longtime writer of the "Counseling Corner," Rev. Judith T. Lester died in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 19, 2022. For more than 20 years Rev. Lester was a part of the Milwaukee Times family, serving as writer of the "Counseling Corner," an informative, faith-driven weekly column that kicked off our Christian Times section. Rev. Lester was a Milwaukee native and was one of six sisters born to the union of J.B. and Bernice Taylor. As a child she was an introvert who loved to read and

write – short stories, journal entries, just about anything. Her family did not attend church often and therefore only as an adult did she come to the conclusion that she had an “undeveloped faith.” In high school, the family moved to East St. Louis, IL where Rev. Lester earned her high school diploma from East St. Louis Senior High. During that era, there were few schools that offered extracurricular activities for girls, but Rev. Lester said she enjoyed playing in a community basketball program and was a member of the National Honor Society. The family

moved back to Milwaukee within two years when her mother, Bernice died. After relocating to Milwaukee, Rev. Lester had two children: Justin R. Lester, who is now pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Vallejo, CA and Camille B. Lester, who is a clinical mental health counselor at Marquette University. The family began attending Community Baptist Church around 1982 and Rev. Lester was shocked by how uninformed she was about the Bible. (Continued on pg. 15 )

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Money and 'The Dream' Many people in the USA have the concept that money is the key to salvation and possibly living the American Dream. In many instances different races who have migrated to the USA have epitomized the previous concept. Yet, when it comes to the African American, money does not have the same effect. African Americans have money, plenty of it when it comes to purchasing power. Why then are African Americans so behind other races when it comes to living the so-called American Dream? Is money the saving grace? Is the American Dream in its white glory, for African Americans? “Money is the key to end all your woes.” That line is from, It’s Like That, Run DMC. People in the USA seem to believe this, but does money solve woes? There are times in the African American community that money seems to create more problems. One instance is maintaining family unity. How many families have grown apart because family members started making money and subconsciously distanced themselves from other family members? How many

times have you heard instances of siblings not talking to each other over a pittance left via a parent's death? Yet, money is supposed to be the key to life long happiness in the USA. Maybe the meaning of happiness in the USA for African Americans is: separation, envy, spite and violence towards one another. If this form of happiness fits the African American version of the American Dream, then money is working perfectly. There are economic blue prints to generate African American economic power. Yet, in 2022 there is no African American economic power base in the USA. Other races have come to the USA and used unity to create economic power. African Americans lack the key principle to economic power, unity. This is why there are any number of African American millionaires in any

major city and no major African American industry. The African American community is a macrocosm of the family. Money can decimate family unity and it seems that money is decimating the African American community. “What people do for money?” That line comes from, What People Do for Money, by Divine Sounds. Many African American females are making money via the new glorification of being a lady of the night in the USA. This money-at-any-cost mentality stems from various forms of music that began sending African American males to the grave and prison in the 80’s. In 2022, music has evolved to send African American

females to strip clubs, prostitution, porn, etc., for money. The loss of two generations of African American males to prison and death is going to pale to the loss of one generation of African American females. The reason is, African American females bear the children. What happens to the children if the mother is obsessed with gaining money via any means necessary? The children may have the latest Polo gear, but what type of nurturing is going into their heads? Silly Me, school is where the child will get their morals and education. How well has this formula worked for African Americans in 250 years? “I’m a dangerous man with some money in my pocket.” That line comes from 24 K Magic, by Bruno Mars. Mars was not talking about any African American male in the USA. The African American males who would be dangerous are usually the ones who don’t have excesses of money. The people that are dangerous with money in

their pockets are white men. White men are dangerous because they use the money to exploit, buy and humiliate every other race on the planet, especially African Americans. African Americans of both sexes will humiliate, sell and offer their bodies and souls for the pleasure of white men. Little do these African Americans realize that anything with a price is cheap. This verse from The Bible may enlighten African Americans on why money fails them in the USA. “For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but forfeits his soul?” Matthew 16:26. Milwaukee County Public Health Collaborative announces new campaigns encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations in low-vaccine rate zip codes Campaigns target parents of young kids and adults ages 65 and older

The Milwaukee County Public Health Collaborative (MCPHC) is announcing a two-part public awareness campaign designed to increase vaccination rates among young children and adults ages 65 and older in Milwaukee’s lowest vaccinated neighborhoods. Focusing on zip codes 53206, 53216, 53218, and 53210, Verified Voices targets parents of young children who have not received their primary series, and Boosted & Blessed targets people ages 65 and older who have not received their booster. The campaigns are supported by HealthyMKE. com, a local, multi-cultural and community-informed health information initiative and funded by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Vaccine Community Outreach 2.0 grant. “These campaigns are built by the community for the community in collaboration with our public health leaders,” said Katie Lepak, Project Officer with the MCPHC.

The Boosted & Blessed campaign focuses on people ages 65 and older and highlights the beauty of life as an older adult and the blessings worth protecting by being boosted. Seven areas of your body you don’t check enough Once you climb out of the shower every morning, there are a few simple things you can do to help prevent or identify serious health conditions, including cancer. One of the many wonderful things about your body is that it has built-in sickness sensors, and experts say you can spot early warning signs of even serious conditions simply by looking at your body. 1. Check your nails If you see dark lines on the nail beds, it could mean you have skin cancer. Yellowish, brown, or black stripes are a sign of cell damage, possibly from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, said Ariel Ostad, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. With early detection and treatment, though, about 95 percent of cases are curable, so have your dermatologist take a second look. If you see long, white, horizontal bands of discoloration on the nail’s surface and you’ve been feeling fatigued lately, it could be bad news for your kidneys. “These bands can be a signal that the kidneys aren’t able to filter out protein from your urine,” Ostad said. That means your body is losing protein faster than you can shovel in filet mignon–and

Back-to-school shopping will average $661 per student this year thanks to inflation Returning to school in-person means a fresh, new look and new supplies for most students, but thanks to decades-high inflation it’s breaking the bank for their parents. That’s according to Deloitte’s 2022 back-to-school survey, which finds parents plan to spend $661 per child, on average, for back-toschool shopping this year, up 8 percent from 2021 and 27 percent from 2019. Clothing and accessories lead the increase, costing 18 percent more this year on average. School supplies cost 7 percent more.

Buying guide – choosing the right laptop for college Laptops for college students are not just used for completing college assignments and case studies. They are also used for web browsing, watching movies, playing games and other activities. There are so many laptops to choose from, right from entry-level to high-end gaming laptops. As a college student, the choice of laptop depends also on the budget we’re allotted. Choosing a laptop is not easy when there is so much to consider. Hopefully, we’ll be able to simplify things through this quick guide. Decide on your budget There are laptops with different specifications and features priced from $150 onwards. It is important to decide a ball park figure on how much you’re going to spend. This will help decide one among laptop categories and types. Choose the operating system Windows 10 is one of the most popular operating system today. You may find it pre-installed in pretty much every laptop these days. It is easy to use. You can install any software, be it productivity to entertainment to games. Depending on what you’re studying, there might be specific system requirements such as Mac OS or An HTGroup, LLC Publication

Linux. This is something to consider. For example, if you need a software package that runs on a Mac, you won’t be able to do that on a Windows laptop. However, a MacBook or a MacBook Pro is expensive, but you can choose to install Windows on it as well. Laptops running Linux might be more affordable than ones that come with Windows pre-installed. This might save your money, but you’ll need to spend a bit little more, you might find more to get a copy of Win- options with 8GB of RAM. Choose the graphics card There are two types of graphics solutions found on laptops – integrated and discrete. The integrated ones are typically slower while the discrete ones are more geared towards performance. If you are going to use your laptop for playing basic games or just for browsing, watching movies, a laptop with an integrated graphics card is perfectly fine. Discrete graphic card solutions on laptops are typically powered by AMD or NVIDIA. AMD calls their cards Radeon, while NVIDIA calls their solutions GeForce. These GPUs (graphics processing unit) come with dedicated graphics memory which lets them handle graphic intensive software and games. If you are studying a 3D or computer graphics course, a discrete graphics card is essential. Of course, the other benefit is being

Choose battery The battery on a laptop is as important as the processor and RAM. As a college student, you might need to carry your laptop to college and back. You might not always get a chance to charge it at college. A good capacity battery can last hours on end. One easy way to find out the capacity of the laptop’s battery is by looking at the rating. It’s usually marked as a 3-cell, 6-cell, or 9-cell battery. You can usually find this information on the retailer or on the manufacturer’s web site. Choose the one that is portable After choosing the hardware specifications for your laptop, there are other elements that you can’t ignore, such as design, size, weight and the display size. If you are going to carry your laptop daily to college and back, look for a lightweight laptop. If you stay in a hostel, and (Continued on pg. 15) www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Rev. Lester passes (Continued from pg. 1) “I felt drawn to it like a bestselling novel,” she said. During this time she also accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized by the Rev. Roy B. Nabors. In 1998, She enrolled in school and by the following year she received her ministerial license, which enabled her to preach and perform other ministerial duties at a specific congregation under the supervision of a pastor. During this busy time she was raising her children. For two years, she prayed about God’s purpose for her life. One night she believes God woke her up and chose her as a vessel for His word. For quite a while, she told no one of her revelation. When she finally told a neighbor, he said that in order for people to take Rev. Lester seriously, she would need to go back to school and earn a degree. “It was a lot,” she said. “I was an at-home mom. I began by volunteering three days a week at the children’s school, because I wanted to make sure that I remained active in the life of my children.” Rev. Lester earned a bachelor’s degree in Ministry from Master’s Divinity School in 2000 and earned a master’s degree from Master’s Inter-

She did not realize her talent for writing until she was asked by The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper to write a Christian column in 2011. It was her weekly column in the Times that was instrumental in her talent being noticed by the National Baptist Sunday School Publishing Board (SSPB). The organization offered her the opportunity to write Bible lessons. For the last 18 years, she has served as a writer for the SSPB in Nashville. She writes a wide range of educational learning materials from youth to adult, namely the Quarterly Sunday School Lessons, Vacation Bible School, the Townsend Press Adult Sunday School Commentary and Living the Baptist Faith Facilitator’s Guide. Rev. Lester is also a contributor to the National Baptist Voice magazine and the Christian Education Informer. She is also a published author of “A GOSPEL People: Bible Stories for Youth Around the Globe." Rev. Lester has given generously to the community as well. She helps collect donations for Sojourner Truth House. Each year the church adopts five families. The families provide a Christmas wish list and members of the congregation supply decorations and wrapped presents. For

it’s a full-time machine you’re using, a larger screen size might be recommended. It’s also useful for watching movies, playing games with your friends, reading notes and creating presentations. A larger screen size also means a wider keyboard, which is more ergonomic. Must-have laptop accessories There are some accessories meant for protecting your laptop, while some others for increasing productivity. Carrying a laptop is not as easy as carrying your books. A laptop bag is the first thing you should consider. These bags are designed with compartments that let you securely carry the laptop and accessories. Be aware that some manufacturers bundle a free laptop bag with the laptop so you don’t always need to purchase one. Windows come with a built-in anti-virus to safeguard your laptop from malware threats and viruses. Some manufacturers offer pre-installed software as well. Most of these are subscription based packages where you pay a set fee every year or so. If you want additional security, you can consider third-party antivirus and internet security software for your new laptop. many years, Rev. Lester has also participated in a prison ministry for women incarcerated at Taycheedah Women’s Correctional Facility in Fond du Lac, WI. Rev. Lester did not receive a salary for her work in ministry. She was employed fulltime with a legal firm. In 2019 Rev. Lester was honored at the 35th Black Excellence Awards in the Religion category. At that time she stated, “My life has been guided by three principles – determination, commitment and education.” Rev. Lester will be deeply missed in our community. The staff and management of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Rev. Lester. And know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers. According to Northwest Funeral Chapel the service for Rev. Lester has been scheduled for Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., ending at 11:00 a.m., at New Covenant Baptist Church, 2315 N. 38th St., Milwaukee, WI. An HTGroup, LLC Publication
