Correction: Local entrepreneurs celebrate launch of new nail polish line, Jus Shanna

On Saturday, June 1, 2019, local business leader Shanna Reid celebrated the launch of a new nail polish line, Jus Shanna Unapologetic Collection, with a fabulous party at the Tripoli Country Club, 7401 North 43rd Street. Nail polish can be a fun way to dress up your nails or cover up any imperfections. Unfortunately most nail polish brands are tested on animals and contain harsh chemical ingredients. Despite being banned for cosmetics use in several countries, formaldehyde—a known carcinogen—is commonly used in nail polish. Jus Shanna is a vegan nail polish and cosmetic collection that is PETA certified and made from all vegan ingredients. So you can feel good about the polish you wear as well as look good. The line also features a number of unique colors to dress up any look. You can purchase the polish at www.jusshanna.com. In the

7-11-19 issue of the Milwaukee Times Katina Shaw was identified as a co-owner of the Jus Shanna line; however she is not an owner, but was on hand to help celebrate the release of the line with creator and sole owner Shanna Reid.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

My Accra adventure For the first three weeks of July 2019 I was in Accra, Ghana. I was there working on a film, Coming to Africa, that is going to be released next year. I had the opportunity to interact with the people of Accra and observe how African people live and interact daily. Accra quickly dispelled the concept of jungles and Tarzan by showcasing modern architecture that you would see anyplace else in the world. First off Accra is a modern city. Just like any major city in the world you have rich areas and poor ones. I had to laugh because of the way a vast majority of the media portrays Africa. The media will lead you to assume that Africa is only jungle and consists of impoverished villages. This may be true in certain parts but if you land in Accra this image is quickly dispelled. Once you get off the plane you are in an airport that is similar to any

modern airport in the world. You have people moving and grooving just like if you walked into JFK airport in New York. Once you walk out of the airport and hit the city you realize that you are a long way from the jungle that Tarzan played in. You are in a modern concrete jungle like any mid-sized city in the world. I won’t say New York because Accra is not that big, but Chicago would be a better comparison as far as population. The cab ride is the one thing you may have

to get used to. In Accra no one pays attention to signs while driving and right of way seems to be whoever has enough gall to cut over or pull out. Oddly enough in the three weeks I was there I only saw one fender-bender and it was where someone bumped another vehicle. The Accra version of driving relies on people being aware of other drivers and understanding they may cut you off. It looks and feels like madness but it works. I stayed in both a hotel and a private house. The hotel

Rummage O Rama

was modern and felt like a Hilton or Sheraton hotel in the USA. Keep in mind Accra is like any other major city in the fact that if you want Four Seasons action, they have it. You do have to be careful of the water. The water isn’t treated like in the USA so when you brush your teeth it was suggested to use bottled water. The house I stayed in was similar to any mini-mansion in the USA. Granite counter tops along with flat screen television in every room, etc. One thing I found interesting was in Accra you can have electric fences to keep out burglars. Can you imagine how that would work in the USA? Maybe I should check into this. The people were the prize in Accra. I met some very nice people and the interactions as a whole were positive. In Accra they want to feed you and make you feel at home. Many people feel

that the African American has cultural ties to Ghana, which may be true. The men wear jerseys and jeans like in the USA and of course the women wear weave like the USA. The latter was a downer to me, but it is what it is. Overall I understood that Accra was a booming city with room to grow and the people still hold onto their culture. Are their faults in Accra? Yes. Is Accra the jungle and people living in grass huts? No, and if they are I didn’t see it. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

July - National Cell Phone Courtesy Month – conclusion According to Jacqueline Whitmore, one of the nation's foremost experts on etiquette and protocol, wireless phone users can take these steps to avoid offending others: 1. Be all there. When you’re in a meeting, performance, courtroom or other busy area, let calls go to voicemail to avoid a disruption. In some instances, turning your phone off may be the best solution. 2. Keep it private. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid discussing private or confidential information in public. You never know who may be in hearing range. 3. Keep your cool. Don’t display anger during a public call. Conversations that are likely to be emotional should be held where they will not embarrass or intrude on others. 4. Learn to vibe. Use your wireless phone's silent or vibration settings in public places such as business

meetings, religious services, schools, restaurants, theaters or sporting events so that you do not disrupt your surroundings. 5. Avoid cell yell! Remember to use your regular conversational tone when speaking on your wireless phone. People tend to speak more loudly than normal and often don't recognize how distracting they can be to others. 6. Follow the rules. Some places, such as hospitals or airplanes, restrict or prohibit the use of mobile phones, so adhere to posted signs and instructions. Some jurisdictions may also restrict mobile phone use in public places. 7. Excuse yourself. If you are expecting a call that can’t be postponed, alert your companions ahead of time and excuse yourself when the call comes in; the people you are with should take precedence over calls you want to make or receive. 8. Send a message. You can text to send and receive

messages without saying a single word. However, never, ever text while driving. 9. Watch and listen discreetly. New multimedia applications such as streaming video and music are great ways to stay informed and access the latest entertainment. However, adjust the volume based on your surroundings in much the same way that you would adjust your ringer volume. Earphones are a great way to avoid distracting others in public areas. 10. Focus on driving. Practice wireless responsibility while driving. Don’t make or answer calls when driving unless you use a hands-free device to help you focus attention on safety. Even then use discretion. You should NEVER text while driving. NEVER. Always make safety of yourself and others on the road your most important call. Beloved, it is rude and obnoxious to use cell phones and speak loudly in places

like movie theaters, funerals, places of worship or in offices. People are talking on cell phones anywhere and everywhere, including the restroom, which is quite infuriating, if not downright disgusting. Many feel they must be reachable anytime every day. This type of thinking only creates a headache for you and those around you. Admittedly, the world has evolved into a community where the use of cell phones is growing rapidly. In fact, some have argued that the cell phone will eventually subsume all forms of communication. The new generation of cell phones allows users to access voicemail, email, surf the Internet, chat on social media, Facetime, read the newspaper, watch movies, etc. The impact cell phones have on our culture is great. But that should not replace time honored values such as politeness, civility, respect and courtesy. It would be a great help to all

for everyone who use cellular devices to follow etiquette rules when in public places; especially in places where it may be considered quite vulgar if you use or even answer your cell phone when it rings. Also, teach your children cell phone etiquette so that it does not become a forgotten principle. General Disclaimer: The writer has used her best efforts in preparation of this information. COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM coach discusses why passing the chemistry test matters By Pat Baldwin Men’s basketball coach University of WisconsinMilwaukee I think most coaches, no matter the sport, would say good team chemistry is an important element of success. Really, wherever people work together, whether it is in a corporate setting, a committee, or a volunteer or church activity, positive chemistry within the group leads to better communication, which leads to better teamwork. It’s no different than in a marriage or a friendship. If you’re connected and on the same page, I think you’re going to be pretty successful. If you’re fragmented, if there’s any semblance of separation, I don’t think you’re going to be as good. I don’t think your company is going to run as well. I don’t think you’re going to be as efficient as you need to be. When our Milwaukee men’s basketball team convened for eight weeks of summer practice on July 1, we greeted

We also have three players who redshirted last year and will be instrumental to our success. That’s a lot of new faces, a lot of players from varied backgrounds who must come together quickly to form what we believe will be a winning team. So we used the first week

of summer practice to get to know one another with class time and team-building activities. One of the things we did was obstacle course training. We divided the team into two groups, and they took turns completing the course, but it wasn’t as simple as it sounds. In each group, one player was blindfolded and had to navigate through an obstacle course of cones by listening to his teammates’ instructions. This exercise

Processed foods: Addictive and potentially life threatening Processed foods have recently been under scrutiny after a troubling study from the National Institutes of Health found that people on ultra-processed diets ate more calories and gained more weight than they did when offered the same amount of nutrients from less processed food. Researchers say that there’s something different about how quickly our bodies take in processed foods and how those foods interact with key hormones that help regulate our appetites. This is scary news, but nothing new. For many years, other researchers have connected packaged and readymade foods with more cancer cases, more early deaths and higher chances of cancer diagnoses. So what’s considered a processed food? Scientists and nutrition experts often used NOVA, a tiered system that classifies what we eat into one of these

four categories: unprocessed or minimally processed, processed culinary ingredients, processed foods, and ultra-processed food and drink products. Unprocessed foods include edible parts of plants (fruits, vegetables, seeds, roots, etc.) or animals, as well as fungi and algae. These can be fresh, frozen, or even fermented — the important distinction is that they have not been treated with additives, injected with salt, or rubbed with oil until they’re about to be eaten. Examples include dry beans; grains like rice; fresh or dried mushrooms; meat and dairy products; seafood; plain yogurt; nuts; and spices. Processed culinary ingredients involve an extra step in production. These are ingredients made from unprocessed foods, like vegetable oils, butter, and lard. This category also includes extracted food, like honey from combs, sugar from cane, and

syrup from maple trees. Processed foods are items that get infused with ingredients like sugar, salt, and fat to help keep them edible longer. Canned fruits, fermented breads (which most breads are, as they’re made with yeast), alcohol, cheese, pickles, and salted nuts all make this list. Finally, there are ultra-processed foods. These items are designed to be ready to eat and ready to heat at any

time. To make that possible, these foods are often factory-made, broken down from their original form and infused with thickeners, colors, glazes, and additives. They may be fried before they’re packed in cans or wrappers. They might contain high-fructose corn syrup, protein isolates, or interesterified oils (replacements for trans fats, which are now widely banned).

Examples include packaged granola bars, carbonated soft drinks, candy, mass-produced breads, margarine, energy drinks, flavored yogurt, chicken nuggets, and hot dogs. These are the items researchers are referring to when they say that ultra-processed foods are linked to more cancer cases, early deaths, and substantial weight gain. Of course, these items also tend to be more convenient and cheaper than less processed food, since they’re less perishable. We understand that ultra-processed food are convenient but if you can afford it, cutting back on ultra-processed food is a good strategy for maintaining a healthy weight and staying disease-free for a long time. Next step is making fresh foods just as accessible as the bad ones. Lawmakers, we’re looking at you.

UR HISTORY

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

A Denver sculptor was the first Black man trained as an astronaut ahead of Apollo 11, but he never made it to space

As July lengthens, the flood of ads for TV series, films and events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 moon landing has hit a high mark. Through grainy footage of slow-motion rocket launches and high-definition interviews, they tell a familiar but thrilling tale of America’s nascent steps off the planet. Most look crisp and compelling, offering a vital history lesson during a time when America could desperately use something to unite around and celebrate. But most don’t have Ed Dwight, Jr. “My first thought was, ‘Why the hell are they including me in this?’ ” Dwight, a Denver-based sculptor, said of the new PBS series Chasing the Moon, which premiered July 8-10 on Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV). “But then I realized it had everything to do with what led up to it.” Dwight has worked for decades as a sculptor, earning an international reputation with more than one hundred public dedications and thousands of private commissions and sales. His work can be seen at national parks, monuments, sports stadiums and galleries in Denver and around the world, having depicted everyone from President Barack Obama to slain Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams and America’s oft-forgotten Black pioneers. But the 85-year-old’s artistic success obscures an important piece of aerospace history. In 1961, Dwight was handpicked by President John F. Kennedy’s administration to become the first-ever African American astronaut — a sign of both Kennedy’s progressive values and his savvy image-tending. At the time, the U.S. was locked in a lifeor-death chess match with the Soviet Union, and each move created international ripples of fear, anticipation and — when it came to the rapidly developing, all-ornothing space program — jealousy and competition. A Kansas City native, Dwight was a gifted aeronautical engineer who was fast rising through the Air Force ranks, tapped by his superiors as he’d been for the Pentagon’s upper-management fast track. But when Dwight was invited to begin astronaut training at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California, under the guidance of legendary pilot Chuck

Ed Dwight, Jr. in 1969 (left) and in 2019 (right). Yeager (the first man ever to break the sound barrier), he wavered. “Dr. (Martin Luther) King was riding high at the time, and I was told, ‘It’s a possibility to be a credit to your race,’ ” Dwight said from his 30,000-square-foot art studio last week. “They said, ‘We can show the world that the Black folks can have a scientific mind and make scientific contributions as well,’ and it was very romantic to hear stuff like that. I thought 30 or 40 of these letters were sent out to 30 or 40 Black guys, and then maybe they picked the best ones. I did not realize they had zeroed in on me.” Dwight felt an immediate backlash as he appeared on national magazine covers, TV news broadcasts and radio programs. Racist politicians, reporters and citizens questioned his physical and mental fitness, skeptical that a Black man had what it took to make it to space. “These guys — I call them the forces of darkness — came in with all kinds of medical and intellectual questions about Black people’s physiology and intelligence,” he said. “They did studies and presented them to the White House and Congress saying my capabilities weren’t even in the ballpark. It was incredibly controversial and political.” Doubtful, too, were some of Dwight’s Air Force colleagues who saw his selection as symbolic rather than substantive. ‘Forget it,’ he remembers them telling him at the time. ” ‘You’re a junior officer in a cubicle handling intelligence briefs on whether or not to bomb China or Russia. You’re an operations guy. These are R&D guys. They’re not going to like this little black shrimp (Dwight is 5-feet-4-inches tall) coming down there and being put in the middle of their party.’ Starting in 1962, Dwight trained on the ground and in the air with Yeager and others, flying experimental

How payday loans work – biggest dangers and 14 better alternatives (part five) Clearing up debts If you can’t get an advance from your boss, you can do the same thing through an app called Activehours. You just send in a picture of your time sheet to show how many hours you’ve worked. The company deposits your pay for those hours into your bank account, up to a maximum of $100 per day. Then when your paycheck comes in, Activehours takes the money it’s already paid you directly out of your account. On the face of it, this looks a lot like a payday loan. You’re still getting a lump sum that you have to pay back all at once, automatically. The big difference is that, with Activehours, you don’t have to pay a huge fee – or any fee at all. You can give the company a “tip” for its service if you want to, but you get to decide how much. Want a solution that is even easier? Open a Chime bank account and set up direct deposit with your employer. Once you do that you will automatically receive access to your paycheck two days early. 6. Borrow from friends and family In some ways, borrowing money from friends and family is the best deal you can get on a loan. People who care about you are unlikely to turn you down for a loan if you’re in need. They’re also likely to give you plenty of time to pay it back and go easy on you if you miss a payment. Sometimes they don’t even ask for any interest. The downside is, hitting up friends and family members for money can put a strain on the relationship. If you borrow money often, take too long to pay it back, or don’t pay it back at all, they’re bound to start feeling put-upon. And if you keep stiffing the same people, sooner or later they’re going to put their feet down and say the bank is closed. To avoid this problem, try to be a considerate borrower. Never let friends and family think you’re taking them and their money for granted. Here are several rules to keep in mind: • Explain the situation. Let your friends and family know what you’re borrowing the money for. It’s their money, after all, so they have a right to know. Mom and Dad may be willing to float you a loan to cover emergency medical bills, but may not

“The Power of Connections Conference 2019"

Saturday, July 27, 2019 8 - 9 a.m.: Community Conversation with MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley Continental Breakfast Included be so happy to pay for a ski vacation. • Keep it small. Don’t ask friends and family for more than they can really afford to lend. Likewise, don’t borrow more than you can afford to pay back. • Pay back promptly. Work out a schedule with payments that you can afford – and be conscientious about making those payments on time. • Include interest. Loaning money isn’t free. When a friend lends you $200, that’s $200 they no longer have in their bank account. So it’s only fair to pay them back at least as much interest as they would have earned by leaving that money in the bank. • Put it in writing. Have a written agreement that outlines your timeline for paying off the loan and the interest you will pay. This makes the terms of your agreement clear and prevents misunderstandings that could hurt your relationship. • Say thank you. Most of all, remember to thank the lender. A loan is a favor, so show your appreciation just as you would for anything else. 7. Go to your bank If you can get one, a personal unsecured installment loan from a bank or credit union is a much better deal than a payday loan. The interest is much lower, and you have longer to pay it back. According to the Federal Reserve, the average interest on a two-year personal loan was 9.75 percent in 2015. Even more importantly, you can pay in small, manageable chunks, rather than in one lump sum. For instance, suppose you need to borrow $500 for an emergency home repair. If you went to a payday lender, you’d have to pay the full $500 back in two weeks – plus $75 interest. If it took you six months to pay the money back, you’d have to renew the loan 13 times, pay-

ing $975 in interest. As noted above, this works out to an APR of 391 percent. Now suppose you went to the bank instead and got a $500 loan for six months at 10 percent APR. Your payment would be about $86 each month. In six months, you’d pay less than $15 in interest – less than you’d pay in two weeks with a payday loan. One problem is that most banks aren’t willing to make loans this small. While payday lenders usually can’t loan more than $1,000 at a time, banks typically won’t lend less than $1,000. However, there’s another way to borrow money from the bank for a short period: overdraft protection. This service lets you take out more money from the bank than you have in your account in exchange for a fee. This fee is called an NSF fee, for “non-sufficient funds.” In 2015, the average NSF fee was $33.07, according to Bankrate. That’s less than the cost of a payroll loan, but it’s still a pretty hefty fee – and worse, you could end up paying it more than once. When your bank balance is in the red, the bank hits you with a separate NSF fee for every transaction you make. So until your paycheck comes in, every withdrawal, check, and debit card purchase costs you an extra $33. At that rate, the fees can quickly add up to more than the cost of a payday loan. So if you want to use overdraft protection to tide you over until payday, do it carefully. If you have a lot of small bills and just one big one that’s more than you have in your account, pay the small ones first. Then pay the big one last, triggering the NSF fee, and don’t touch your account again until payday. That way, you’ll only have to pay the fee once. Part 6: Using online loan lenders.
